In the last few months, anonymous masked thugs calling themselves ICE agents have been terrorizing American cities with the goal of detaining and disappearing innocent immigrants while they rampage across the country as if they are some sort of latter-day Nazi brownshirts.
Fortunately, the resistance to these goons is strong, organized and rapidly growing, and we may soon be in a position to shut down their campaign of violence and intimidation.
There have been a few victories, notably the stopping of purported ICE agents at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, so now it’s time for all of us to turn up the heat on Trump’s private army of miscreants and let them know in no uncertain terms that their brutal and illegal tactics have no place in an enlightened and advanced 21st Century democracy, and that their presence is definitely not welcome here.
To that end, I would love to see signs similar to this one placed in courthouses, workplaces, stores, factories, schools, hospitals, places of worship and any places where at risk people are in danger of being detained. Here is the text of my artwork:
NOTICE
ANYONE PURPORTING TO BE AN AGENT OF ICE OR ANY OTHER FEDERAL AGENCY WHO ENTERS THESE PREMISES WITH THE INTENT OF ARRESTING OR DETAINING ANY PERSON OR PERSONS WITHIN:
MUST WEAR CLOTHING THAT ACCURATELY DISPLAYS THE AGENCY THEY REPRESENT.
MUST NOT WEAR A MASK OR ANYTHING ELSE CONCEALING THEIR IDENTITY.
MUST POSSESS AN OFFICIAL WARRANT THAT HAS BEEN SIGNED BY A FEDERAL JUDGE AND AGREE TO SHOW IT TO ANYONE WHO ASKS TO SEE IT.
MUST AGREE TO AND COOPERATE WITH ANY PHOTOGRAPHY, AUDIO OR VIDEO RECORDING OF THEIR ACTIVITY.
MUST PROVIDE DETAILED INFORMATION OF WHERE THEIR ARRESTEES WILL BE SENT AND ALLOW FULL DUE PROCESS AS REQUIRED BY THE US CONSTITUTION.
THE UNITED STATES IS A DEMOCRACY AND THE RIGHTS OF EVERYONE MUST BE RESPECTED.
I don’t know how to enforce these rules unless we can compel state or local governments or private establishments to do so, but I believe that even if posting these rules doesn’t deter the alleged agents, they might embolden others to stand up to them.
If we work together, we can restore justice and safety to all Americans.
