Former President George W. Bush’s brother announced Tuesday that he voted for Democrat James Talarico in the high-stakes Texas Senate race.

In a post on Facebook, Neil Bush wrote that while he normally stays out of politics, he had serious concerns about Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, the Republican nominee in the race.

“I have been deeply troubled by Paxton’s conduct as Texas Attorney General, particularly his decision to challenge the results of the 2020 presidential election,” Bush wrote. “My concerns about his judgment and conduct are hardly mine alone. He was impeached by the Republican-controlled Texas House, although subsequently acquitted by the Texas Senate.”

A spokesperson for the Paxton campaign did not immediately respond to The Hill’s request for comment.

Bush said his vote was not only to oppose Paxton. The former president’s brother praised Talarico’s character, saying he sees qualities in the Texas state representative that he admires in public servants.

“He speaks with respect, seeks common ground, and seems genuinely interested in bringing people together rather than driving them apart,” Bush wrote. “His faith appears to be a deeply rooted source of humility, compassion, and conviction rather than a political weapon.”

President Trump’s takeover of the Republican Party has put the GOP at odds with the Bush family.

The former president did not endorse Trump in 2024, and his daughter, Barbara Bush, endorsed and campaigned for former Vice President Kamala Harris. Former Vice President Dick Cheney, who served with Bush, endorsed Harris, along with his daughter, former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.).

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), whom Paxton defeated in this year’s primary, held a fundraiser with the former president to support a handful of GOP Senate nominees in competitive races, but not Paxton.

And in 2022, former Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush, the former president’s nephew, launched a primary challenge against Paxton for attorney general but lost in the runoff by a 36-point margin.

In Tuesday’s Facebook post, Neil Bush wrote that he still believes in Republican principles but believes Trump has done “enormous damage to the Republican party.”

“I have been a Republican for most of my life, and I still believe deeply in many traditional Republican principles,” Bush wrote. “But character matters more than party affiliation.”

Court of Appeals upholds convictions of voting official who argued she was a private citizen whistleblower By Alexandria Staubach 5/13/2026 The Wisconsin Court of Appeals yesterday affirmed the conviction of Kimberly Zapata, the former deputy director of the City of Milwaukee Election Commission, who unsuccessfully urged the court to overturn her convictions for voter fraud and public-office misconduct, arguing she was a whistleblower.   A unanimous jury convicted Zapata in March 2024. The charges included one count of felony misconduct in public office and three misdemeanor counts of making a false statement to obtain or vote an absentee ballot.   Milwaukee Circuit Court Judge Kori Ashley sentenced Zapata to nine months in jail, stayed in favor of 12 months of probation and 120 hours of community service.   The opinion, written by Judge Sara Geenen and joined by Chief Judge Joseph Donald and Presiding Judge Pedro Colón, outlines Zapata’s scheme.   Frustrated by the ease with which individuals could obtain absentee military ballots, Zapata requested three, one each for a fictitious Holly Jones, Holly Adams, and Holly Brandtjen.   She assigned each a random home address in Milwaukee, Shorewood, and Menomonee Falls. She picked municipalities where she thought the clerks would not notice fraud.   Then, using “WisVote”—a secure, employee-access, statewide voter registration database—Zapata retrieved the home address of “a state legislator because the legislator was the most vocal election fraud politician that she knew.” She had the absentee ballots mailed to the legislator.   Clerks in all three municipalities mailed absentee ballots to the legislator’s address.   Zapata presented a two-fold argument to the Court of Appeals. First, she contended that her conduct was not “for the purpose of obtaining” an absentee ballot because she intended that the absentee ballots be acquired by someone else.  Second, she argued there was insufficient evidence to convict her of misconduct in public office because she was acting as a concerned private citizen demonstrating a loophole. Regarding whether Zapata generated the false ballots “for the purpose of obtaining” absentee ballots, Zapata argued that “obtaining” an absentee ballot meant physical possession. But the court agreed with the state that “obtaining” included constructive possession. “(B)y requesting the ballots, Zapata set off a series of actions she knew the ballots would be subjected to," Geenen wrote.   While Zapata argued for a more rigid definition of “obtaining,” which is not defined by the statute, she “knew that by requesting the ballots, the ballots would be generated under the fake names that she provided” and “that the ballots, once generated per her request, would be sent to the address that she provided,” Geenen said.   “Zapata controlled both the names under which the ballots would be generated and the destination to which those ballots would be sent.”   Whether Zapata acted in her official capacity required “a material connection between the public official’s duties and powers and the forbidden act,” Geenen wrote.   The court found such a connection. Zapata used her work laptop to request the ballots, her employee credentials to access the WisVote administrative website, and her administrative knowledge to target specific municipalities for sending ballots. All weighed against Zapata’s argument that she acted as a private citizen.   “In our view, the State established a material connection between Zapata’s election fraud and the powers and duties inherent to her public office,” wrote Geenen.   The court’s decision comes several weeks after another individual, Harry Wait, was convicted of fraud and identify theft after requesting ballots on behalf of Assembly Speaker Robin Vos and Racine Mayor Cory Mason in the same election cycle. Wait also purportedly sought to illuminate vulnerabilities in the voting system.  Jury finds former Milwaukee election official guilty of election fraud A Milwaukee County jury found a former election official guilty of election fraud involving absentee ballots Wednesday afternoon.  Kimberly Zapata, the former deputy director of the Milwaukee Election Commission, was also found guilty of misconduct in public office, a felony, after she admitted to using fake names to request military absentee ballots on her work laptop in 2022. Zapata then sent those ballots to the home of Republican state Rep. Janel Brandtjen, who was promoting false theories about election fraud. Zapata, 47, has been on trial in Milwaukee County since Monday. After deliberating for around five hours following closing arguments Wednesday morning, Zapata appeared quiet in court while Milwaukee County judge Ashley Kori read the decision of the jury. During opening statements, prosecutors said Zapata committed fraud and violated the public’s trust. However, her defense attorney said she acted as a “whistleblower.”  As deputy director, Zapata was in charge of early voting, absentee voting and voter registration for the city of Milwaukee. She was fired by the city and charged with the crimes in November 2022.  Her sentencing will be held May 2. She faces up to three-and-a-half years in prison, a $10,000 fine for the felony charge and another six months in prison for each of the election fraud charges, which carry fines of up to $1,000.

"Stormtroops & Freikorps Again" - Marsh Family parody of "Time Warp" from Rocky Horror Picture Show

We wanted to pick a song from The Rocky Horror Show in tribute to the wonderful Tim Curry (who sadly died last month) – who, among other stellar credits across his amazing career, played Dr. Frank-N-Furter. So this is our live attempt at parodying “Time Warp” – the hit song from 1975 with lots of spoken word, weird energy, dark intent and suggestion, and loony choreographed dance moves. The glam rock and roll song was written by Richard O’Brien and Richard Hartley, and in the stage show, served as an encore (led by Dr. Frank-N-Furter). The choreographing of loonies brought us to this week’s headline stories in Europe, where gangs of masked men have appeared (especially in port cities) under a new banner – calling themselves “Patriot Platform” and intimidating the general public with their black costumes and menacing paramilitary vibe and chants. They disrupted the ferry port at Dover, have made life miserable for the Royal National Lifeguard Institution and its incredible volunteers (who put their lives on the line to save those at sea), and in midweek also targeted the offices of journalists (well, the Daily Mail). At the moment it’s a rather pathetic operation, but with millions of dollars of (largely American) funding pouring into all sorts of organisations, there is a sense of a new watershed in how the Far Right are mobilising. In very-much linked news, the German AfD party also just won a notable election – celebrated by their supporters Elon Musk and Donald Trump. The comparison in the title and chorus links back to the developments in Europe/Britain in the 1920s and 1930s, when in Germany, Italy, and here, roaming paramilitary groups were coordinated to link militarism, nationalism, fascism, masculinity, and intimidate their enemies and those they blamed for decline. Judge Blocks Trump’s White House Ban on CNN, MS NOW and Politico 23SEP26

NPR just reported this morning reporters from these three networks are still being denied access to the White House by the secret service. Judge Blocks Trump’s White House Ban on CNN, MS NOW and Politico

Judge Timothy J. Kelly issued a temporary restraining order and told the White House to immediately restore the press credentials for the employees of the three news outlets.

A federal judge on Thursday said that President Trump’s order barring CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House was likely unconstitutional and ordered the administration to restore access to the three news outlets.

Judge Timothy J. Kelly of the U.S. District Court in Washington granted a 14-day restraining order and told the White House to “immediately return, reinstate, and restore” the press credentials held by employees of the three outlets.

The news organizations were likely to succeed in their claim that the White House had violated their constitutional due process rights by revoking their press credentials without advance notice or an opportunity to respond, Judge Kelly wrote in the order issued in the early hours of Thursday.

He also rejected, for now, the administration’s argument that revoking the outlets’ press credentials was necessary to protect national security.

“This is a strong ruling vindicating freedom of the press, due process and the rule of law. We greatly appreciate the court’s swift action,” Theodore J. Boutrous, a lawyer representing the media companies, told CNN.

The ruling from Judge Kelly, a Trump appointee, is a temporary reprieve for the three outlets while the litigation proceeds. It pauses a chaotic series of events that began last Friday, when Mr. Trump declared in a Truth Social post that the outlets were banned from the White House because of their reporting.

On Saturday, journalists for each outlet were denied access to White House grounds, and on Monday, the outlets sued the administration, arguing that the ban violated their First Amendment rights.

Other media companies responded by scaling back their routine coverage of presidential events in solidarity with the three outlets.

It was not clear how quickly the press corps would resume its usual coverage.

In a Tuesday court filing, the White House described the ban as preliminary and said the news outlets had until Friday to challenge it. All three organizations had fallen short of White House conduct standards and were responsible for “reporting incidents” that “threatened national security and spread falsehoods,” lawyers for the White House wrote.

Judge Kelly’s rationale for ruling against the White House echoed his own reasoning in a similar case from November 2018, when Mr. Trump, in his first term, revoked the White House press credentials of the CNN journalist Jim Acosta. Mr. Acosta had not been given an opportunity to contest the decision, Judge Kelly said at the time.

Fights over journalistic access have become a staple of Mr. Trump’s presidency. In his first term, the White House revoked the credentials of another reporter in addition to Mr. Acosta. Both regained their credentials after going to court. At the start of his second term, Mr. Trump also excluded The Associated Press from the pool of journalists who cover the president in such spaces as the Oval Office and Air Force One. That case remains in litigation.

Mr. Trump’s defense secretary, Pete Hegseth, has also imposed reporting and access restrictions on news organizations at the Pentagon. The Times successfully challenged some of those restrictions in court, and the Pentagon is appealing the rulings.
