Until Sunday, I had been only vaguely aware that the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show was in the midst of a comeback after its brief cancellation in 2019 over then-CEO Les Wexner’s close ties to Jeffrey Epstein.
But after a surprise appearance by Kylie Jenner and the unusually vehement defense of something called “the Fantasy Bra,” it’s clear that I had underestimated the brand’s turnaround. The result was a show teeming with depressing nostalgia or, as Vanessa Friedman of The New York Times put it, the feeling that “the past seven years didn’t happen.” In other words, like the #MeToo movement and our collective outrage over a man’s friendship with a notorious pedophile were officially old news.
Still, it isn’t scantily clad models or even the return of regressive ideas of sex appeal that I’ll remember most from Sunday’s show. That distinction belongs to Jenner and Timothée Chalamet.
Read why and more on the demoralizing nostalgia of the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show here.
