President Donald Trump had a horrible, no good, very bad weekend.
He told NBC News he thinks his former bestie Elon Musk's comments railing against Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” and his tariffs, not to mention Musk's since-deleted allegation that Trump is in the Epstein files, were "very disrespectful" and that he has no plans to reconcile with him. And, of course, he was ranting online about riots in Los Angeles sparked by workplace raids conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), as I wrote yesterday; ultimately, the White House announced in a statement Saturday night that Trump was deploying 2,000 members of the National Guard to LA—the first time since 1965 a president has done so without a request from the state’s governor, according to the Brennan Center.
Trump's ranting continued today, as my colleague Inae Oh writes, when he promised to "hit [protesters] harder than they have ever been hit before" if they spit at law enforcement officers during protests. "Such disrespect will not be tolerated!” Trump added. He also called for arresting Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-Calif.), despite the fact that he has not broken any laws.
Meanwhile, my colleague Isabela Dias has a fascinating look at the "twisted" legal theory behind Trump's decision to bring in troops to quell the protests, and Anna Merlan reports on the LAPD's alleged surveilling of protesters. Make sure to check back with Mother Jones throughout the week as we continue to report on the fallout in LA.
