Denton County community pastor faces child pornography charges
Jim Dale Mustain faces charges on four counts of possession or promotion of lewd visual material depicting a child.
A pastor and nonprofit leader from Denton County was arrested last month and faces charges of possession or promotion of child pornography, according to police records.
Jim Dale Mustain of Denton was arrested in Ashe County, N.C., on April 25, according to a news release from the Lewisville Police Department.
He faces charges on four counts of possession or promotion of lewd visual material depicting a child. The Lewisville Police Department later issued an additional warrant on one count of possession of child pornography.
Mustain was extradited to Texas and booked into the Denton County Jail on May 14.
He remains in custody in lieu of $500,000 bond, according to the news release.
Mustain served as the community pastor for Preston Trail Community Church from 2019 to 2023. In an email sent to Preston Trail Church members and obtained by The Dallas Morning News, the church said it did not know of any behavior related to the charges against Mustain.
In the same email, the church said it launched an independent internal investigation and found no evidence of illegal activity by him during his time there.
“There is currently no indication that any children connected to Preston Trail were involved or harmed,” the email said. “Mustain’s role during his time on staff did not include direct responsibilities related to children’s or student ministries.”
Mustain also served as associate pastor at the Valley Ranch Baptist Church from 2005 to 2014, according to an email sent to its congregation and provided to The Dallas Morning News.
He is the founder and executive director of Loving Community, a nonprofit organization and is the hub director for Forge Dallas.
The church supported Loving Community as a mission partner, the email said. The same message also said Loving Community offered school mentoring in Lewisville ISD and Frisco ISD.
Valley Ranch Baptist Church said it had no prior knowledge of any behavior related to the charges prior to April 21. On May 1, the church shared the information about Mustain’s arrest in a meeting. Since then, Valley Ranch has been working with Godly Response to Abuse in the Christian Environment, identifying ways to strengthen evaluation processes and working on their Sexual Misconduct Response Policy.
“At this time, we are not aware that any children connected to VRBC were involved or harmed,” the email said.
Mustain worked as a community volunteer with some campuses in the Lewisville Independent School District for several years. He was most recently involved with small student groups from Durham Middle School and Creekside Elementary during the last school year, according to the school district.
In a letter to the families of students who participated in a mentoring program Mustian was involved in, the district said there is no indication that the allegations involved any of its students or campuses. Mustain is currently not permitted at any district facility.
“If you or your student has any information you believe may be important, we want to encourage you to reach out to LPD or a trusted adult at school,” the letter said.
Frisco ISD referred questions regarding the investigation to law enforcement and directed The News to its online volunteer policy.
The Lewisville Police Department news release said the investigation is ongoing.
