President Donald Trump posted an AI-generated image, apparently of himself as Jesus Christ, on Truth Social Sunday night, sparking outrage from former Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene and other social media users.
The image, which was shared without a written comment by the president, showed Trump donning a traditional white robe and red sash and healing a man while surrounded by four adoring people, including a nurse and a soldier.
In the background, an eagle is flying in front of the U.S. flag to the left, soldiers appear to be ascending toward a Heaven-like light in the middle, and another eagle is flying next to military jets to the right.
“It’s more than blasphemy,” Greene, who resigned from Congress in January after clashing with the president and her party, wrote on X, commenting on the image. “It’s an Antichrist spirit.”
Many Truth Social users, who tend to be supporters of the president. seemed equally repulsed by the image.
“Equating yourself to Jesus? You’ll burn in hell,” a user called Sheriffwoody83 wrote in response to Trump’s post. “If you call yourself a Christian and you’re not outraged by this, you really need to re-evaluate your faith,” another user called msamiraghab wrote.
The Context
Trump’s social media post has come only days after reports of a tense meeting between Pentagon and Vatican officials in January and after Pope Leo XIV harshly criticized the president’s threat to wipe out “a whole civilization” in Iran.
The Free Press first reported about the January meeting, writing that Under Secretary of War for Policy Elbridge Colby had summoned Cardinal Christophe Pierre, Pope Leo XIV’s then-ambassador to the U.S., to the Pentagon after the pope’s January state-of-the-world address.
Newsweek contacted the White House for comment by email on Monday early morning, outside of standard working hours.
Cardinal Christophe Pierre was told that the Vatican and the Catholic Church should get on board with the Trump administration's military tactics.
A spokesperson for the Department of Defense told Newsweek that the Free Press' characterization of the meeting was "highly exaggerated and distorted."
On Sunday, Trump told reporters he was “not a big fan” of the pope, later adding on Truth Social that Leo was “weak” on crime and “terrible” for foreign policy.
“I don’t want a Pope who thinks it’s OK for Iran to have a Nuclear Weapon,” he lashed out against the pontiff. “I don’t want a Pope who thinks it’s terrible that America attacked Venezuela, a Country that was sending massive amounts of Drugs into the United States and, even worse, emptying their prisons, including murderers, drug dealers, and killers, into our Country,” he added.
“And I don’t want a Pope who criticizes the President of the United States because I’m doing exactly what I was elected, IN A LANDSLIDE, to do, setting Record Low Numbers in Crime, and creating the Greatest Stock Market in History.”
The president added that Leo should be “thankful” to him, alleging he was chosen “because he was an American, and they thought that would be the best way to deal with President Donald J. Trump.”
“If I wasn’t in the White House, Leo wouldn’t be in the Vatican,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Leo XIV has repeatedly criticized the president since taking on his new role, including over the Iran war, and has no current plan to visit the U.S. On Monday, he said he has "no fear" of the Trump administration.
The Reaction
Greene, who broke away from Trump after years of loyalty over what she said was his lack of transparency in handling the Jeffrey Epstein files, among other issues, made a connection between the president’s Truth Social post and the recent debate over his relationship with the Holy See.
“On Orthodox Easter, President Trump attacked the Pope because the Pope is rightly against Trump’s war in Iran and then he posted this picture of himself as if he is replacing Jesus,” she wrote on X, commenting on the image.
“This comes after last week’s post of his evil tirade on Easter and then threatening to kill an entire civilization,” she added. “I completely denounce this and I’m praying against it!!!”
Reactions on Truth Social below Trump’s post, including from his supporters, were mixed, with as many backing the president as criticizing him for the use of the image and its messaging.
There were several responses to the president’s post which mentioned Trump being “on a mission from God” and “not a God or saviour, just a blessing from God for America.”
But just as many were scathing of these reactions, with several people telling Trump that, “with all due respect,” the post was“not a good look.”
“There is no excuse whatsoever to put yourself in the place of Jesus Christ...Not even Trump can get away with putting something out there showing himself as Jesus. He’s not that great,” another Truth Social user with the handle of Key of David wrote.
The image was defended by some on social media. On X, "America First" political commentator David J. Freeman, who uses the handle Gunther Eagleman, called the image a “powerful painting.” He wrote of the image: “Trump stands radiant in a red robe, laying hands on a sick man while surrounded by American symbols, the flag, eagles, fighter jets, the Statue of Liberty, and everyday heroes.”
Reverend Jordan Wells, a conservative pastor and self-declared Zionist, wrote on X that Trump was not calling himself Jesus, but “answering God’s call.”
“Trump isn’t calling himself Jesus. He’s been crystal clear from the beginning: he believes he’s doing the work God has set before him,” he wrote, commenting on Trump’s Truth Social post.
“The people outraged by this are just looking for something to be mad about. Trump is openly praying for the sick—and as Protestants, we still believe in the power of prayer.”
Faithfuls’ Growing Disappointment
While Trump lashes out against Pope Leo XIV and tensions escalate between his administration and the Roman Catholic Church, religious voters in the U.S. are losing faith in the president’s handling of his role, recent polls show.
A poll released in February by the Pew Research Center before the start of the Iran war showed that in most religious groups—including evangelicals, Catholics, and Protestants who are not evangelicals—the president’s approval rating is now much lower than in the first days of his second term.
Approval of the president’s handling of his role was down to 52 percent from 59 percent a year earlier among white Catholics, researchers found, while it was down to 23 percent from 31 percent among Hispanic Catholics. Similarly, support for all or most of his agenda had also fallen among these groups, going from 51 to 46 percent for white Catholics and from 20 percent to 18 percent for Hispanic Catholics.
Belief that Trump is acting ethically in office was also down among all religious groups, including white Catholics (from 39 percent to 34 percent), and Hispanic Catholics (from 22 percent to 14 percent).
The poll of 8,512 respondents, conducted from January 20 to 26, 2026, had a margin of error plus or minus 1.4 percentage points.
Another recent poll showed that, on the other hand, Americans are generally appreciative of the new pontiff. A recent NBC poll found that U.S. registered voters now see the pope more favorably than the president, with 23 percent of respondents saying they see Leo very positively, 19 percent saying they view him somewhat positively, and only 8 percent saying they view him negatively.
In the same poll, Trump was found to be viewed favorably by 41 percent of voters and negatively by 53 percent for a net negative of 12.
