Sayreville football parent reveals sexual nature of alleged locker room hazing ritual (Exclusive) 8&9OKT14

THIS is why America suffers from a rape culture. Sexual violation of anyone is wrong, and knowing about it and not reporting it is wrong, so every player violated is a victim and everyone who was present and didn't try to stop it or at the least didn't report it is a perpetrator. Thank God for the brave parent who took action and spoke up. The school board was right to uphold the decision by the Superintendent of Schools Richard Labbe to cancel the rest of the football season for Sayreville. Coaches should be fired, players should be charged, and the parents of Sayreville need to do some soul searching about the kind of community they have been tolerating in their schools.

Sayreville football parent reveals sexual nature of alleged locker room hazing ritual (Exclusive)

It came without warning.
It would start with a howling noise from a senior football player at Sayreville War Memorial High School, and then the locker room lights were abruptly shut off.
In the darkness, a freshman football player would be pinned to the locker room floor, his arms and feet held down by multiple upperclassmen. Then, the victim would be lifted to his feet while a finger was forced into his rectum. Sometimes, the same finger was then shoved into the freshman player’s mouth.

This disturbing hazing within the storied Sayreville football program, as told to NJ Advance Media on Wednesday by the parent of a player in the program, happened almost every day in the locker room this fall, he said.
The allegations — revealed for the first time — provide details to the events that sparked a criminal investigation by local and county police, and prompted the cancellation of the remainder of the Sayreville football season this week by Superintendent of Schools Richard Labbe.
The parent, informed by his son and other parents close to the investigation, is the first to come forward to reveal the hazing practices Labbe has characterized as “incidences of harassment, intimidation and bullying as constituted by the definition within the anti-bullying statute that took place on a pervasive level, on a wide-scale level, and at a level in which the players knew, tolerated, and in general accepted.”
According to the parent, whose identity is being protected because the parent feared retribution against the family and the player, the routine was initiated when an upperclassman would enter the locker room and make a wolf call or howling noise.

“[For] 10 seconds, the lights would go off and they would grab a freshman and they would go on,” the parent said. “Right on the floor. … It was happening every day. They would get the freshmen.” He added: “Kids would just sit around and witness [stuff] like this.”

Detectives from the Middlesex County Prosecutors Office and the Sayreville Police Department are investigating the allegations, but officials have refused to reveal any specifics about the case. The parent said his son and several other Sayreville players have been questioned by police. No charges have been filed. The parent also said he is in the process of retaining an attorney.

“These parents here, they’re in shock,” the parent said. “We never expected anything like this to happen. Your kid, he’s going to school, school’s got to be a place where you think the kid is the safest.”
When told of the specific allegations over the phone Wednesday, Labbe declined to comment. He referred to his previous comments calling the allegations “very serious.”
The Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office declined comment on the allegations detailed by the Sayreville parent. Also, David Abromaitis, a detective in the office, declined comment Wednesday when reached by phone.
The parent said the “ringleaders” involved in the hazing are seniors.

Madeline Thillet, speaking at Tuesday night’s board of education meeting, said her son was one of the members of the team interviewed by investigators. She downplayed the hazing while protesting the cancellation of the season.
“I was at the police station with him when they were questioning him,” she said. “They were talking about a butt being grabbed. That’s about it. No one was hurt. No one died. I don’t understand why they’re being punished. I think that the forfeited game was punishment enough.”

The parent said he could not “understand how none of the coaches were aware of it. As a coach, you know what’s going on in your clubhouse. You know what’s going on in the locker room.”

On Oct. 1, Labbe said he was alerted to an anonymous allegation made to Sayreville police about a serious incident of inappropriate conduct —possibly more — by members of the football team. The next day, the matter was turned over to the Middlesex County prosecutor and Labbe canceled Sayreville’s football games — varsity, junior varsity and freshman contests — last weekend against rival South Brunswick.
Then, on Friday, in a separate incident, an attorney for assistant coach Charles Garcia said his client had resigned after details of his arrest for steroids possession surfaced.

On Monday, Labbe announced he was canceling the rest of the season.
The hazing allegations have turned Sayreville’s no frills, blue-collar community upside-down, as both local and national news vans and media reporters have descended on the town, scouring the streets and interviewing people in parking lots and strip malls.
Many Sayreville residents have expressed outrage over the cancellation of the football season. The varsity team, nicknamed the Bombers, has made the playoffs in each of the past 20 seasons, and Sayreville has captured three state championships over the past four years, feeding nearby Rutgers University with a host of elite players.
Sayreville longtime football coach George Najjar declined comment when reached by phone Wednesday.

MORE: Just the beginning of a legal firestorm for Sayreville?

More than a hundred Sayreville residents attended Tuesday night’s previously scheduled board of education meeting to urge the members to reconsider the decision to cancel the season. The crowd, at times, grew heated and animated, but the board affirmed the decision to end the football season.
Afterward, about a hundred people gathered under the lights on the football field, lingering for about 15 minutes, gazing across the impressive stadium, until it was time to go home.

He confessed to RAPE. But he's walking free & Anonymous Takes On the Maryville Rape Scandal. Is This a Good Thing? 17&15OKT13

RAPES of women in India have been part of the national nightly news broadcast over the past year and many have been disgusted with the brutality of these crimes as well as the lack of justice for the victims. But what is not so well known is the number of brutal rapes in this country, America, and the ease with which the rapist gets away with his crime or receives a minimal punishment. More appalling is the way the victim and her family is stigmatized by the community, often harassed and even brutalized for reporting the crime. Stubenville, OH, Billings, MT, now Maryville, Mo. God only knows how many other women and their families across the U.S. are in similar situations. Why this seemingly growing level of sexual violence against women in the U.S.? Maybe it has something to do with so many right wing politicians and media pundits promoting political platforms degrading women, equating unrestricted access to birth control as proof of women being sluts and whores and just asking for it, that whole "justifiable rape" argument we heard during last year's election campaigns. Please sign this petition calling on the Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster to investigate the rape of Daisy Coleman and the coverup by the Maryville, MO "justice" community. And if you want more on politicians and rape, or the cases in Billings or Steubenville, just search rape on this blog, unfortunately there are too many entries....
Following this call to action is an article from Mother Jones on Anonymous taking on the Maryville, MO "justice" community, their motivations and success in prior actions and the hazards of these actions committed anonymously. PLEASE DON'T let Anonymous' campaign keep you from signing the petition from UltraViolet, they are two separate organizations and actions......
A 14-year-old girl was raped in Maryville, Missouri, but her well-connected rapist is walking free--despite a mountain of evidence and even a taped confession. Tell Attorney General Chris Koster: Investigate the rape and cover-up, and get justice for Daisy.

Local authorities in Missouri need to hear from you right away.
Nearly 2 years ago, 14-year-old Daisy Coleman* was raped at a party by a high school football star and grandson of a powerful local politician in Maryville, Missouri. But now, he’s walking free while Daisy and her family struggle to survive with what happened to her.1
Immediately after the rape, Daisy and her mother went to the hospital and reported it to police. Matthew Barnett was charged, and he confessed on tape.2
But a few months later, county prosecutor Robert Rice--who has close ties to the alleged rapist's influential grandfather--dropped the charges. Worse, the town and high school ganged up not on the rapist, but on Daisy and her family. Classmates said they hoped she "gets what's comin," calling her terrible names. The Colemans were forced to move out of town, Daisy's mom lost her job over the case, and their house was even burned to the ground--the cause of the fire still undetermined.3
This is Steubenville all over again. And just like the Steubenville case, if thousands of us speak out and shine a national spotlight on Maryville, we can get justice for Daisy and her family. There’s a lot of national media attention on this case right now, and news just broke that a special prosecutor will be appointed to investigate.4 But this case has been slow walked for years. We need to make sure every single person responsible for delaying justice--including local officials--is investigated and held accountable. Will you sign the petition to demand justice for Daisy?
Sign the petition to ask the Attorney General to investigate everyone involved in the rape and the cover-up.
After the rape, Barnett left Daisy in her yard, barely conscious and wearing a t-shirt. The temperature in Maryville that night was just 22 degrees. When Daisy’s mom found her passed out at her front door at 5 a.m., her wet hair was frozen, and she was injured from the attack. She cried when her mom asked her what had happened.5
The town of Maryville seems happy to move on and forget the rape now that the charges have been dropped and the Colemans have left, but Daisy's recovery has been slower. She has attempted suicide twice, has been hospitalized multiple times, and spent three months at a residence for struggling teens. "You’re the s-word, you’re the w-word… b-word. Just, after a while, you start to believe it," she told a reporter about the constant torment. Barnett has gone on with his life, enrolling at Central Missouri University this year.6
Rape is an epidemic in this country--1 in 5 women will be sexually assaulted, but only 3% of attackers ever spend a single day in jail.7 And when authorities ignore attacks on young girls and let rapists go free, it perpetuates a culture and justice system that tolerates rape and blames survivors for the crimes against them.
Prosecutor Rice told the Kansas City Star that this brutal rape was just "incorrigible teenagers" drinking and having sex--ignoring evidence collected from rape kits and bedding from the crime scene, witnesses' accounts, and even the taped confession of the rapist.8 And if you thought this story couldn’t get worse, since the rape became public, Daisy's mom has learned that other girls had tried to come forward before--but according to the sheriff, they were "all liars and... just wanted to crucify those poor innocent boys."9
Horrific cases like this one are becoming too familiar--from Jane Doe in Steubenville, Ohio; to Rehtaeh Parsons in Halifax, Nova Scotia; and Cherice Moralez in Billings, Montana.10 But we can't let this keep happening. Can you sign the petition to make sure that Daisy's rapist is brought to justice?
Add your name.
Thanks for all you do,

Anonymous Takes On the Maryville Rape Scandal. Is This a Good Thing?

| Tue Oct. 15, 2013 12:33 PM PDT
Crypt0nymous/YouTube
Anonymous yesterday launched a campaign of vigilante justice over yet another high school jock sexual assault scandal.
It's becoming an all-too-familiar narrative. The otherwise-sleepy middle American town in the spotlight this time around is Maryville, Missouri, where former high school football player Matthew Barnett, the grandson of former Missouri state Rep. Rex Barnett, was accused of sexually assaulting a highly intoxicated 14-year-old girl named Daisy Coleman, while a 15-year-old boy was accused of doing the same to the girl's 13-year-old friend. A third boy, Jordan Zech, admitted to recording one of the incidents on a cellphone. Daisy's mother later found her sprawled on the front porch of her house in a semiconscious state, her hair frozen and her shoes and possessions scattered in a neighbor's yard.
That cold January night in 2012 was only the beginning of the nightmare for the Coleman family, who told their story in an in-depth feature in the Kansas City Star on Sunday. Daisy's mother, Melinda Coleman, who allowed the press to use her daughter's name, told reporter Dugan Arnett that in the weeks and months following the incident, Daisy and her family members were spurned and bullied and eventually run out of town. Later, the Coleman's house in Maryville, which was on the market, mysteriously burned to the ground. Fire officials haven't determined the cause of the blaze. The Star reported that despite many of the facts in the case being largely undisputed—the boys said they had sex with the girls and admitted to leaving Daisy "outside in 30-degree weather"—Robert Rice, the Nodaway County prosecutor, dropped the felony sexual assault and misdemeanor child endangerment charges against Barnett and a felony sexual exploitation charge against Zech.
Rice told the Star the charges were dropped for lack of evidence and other information that came to light. "There wasn't any prosecuting attorney that could take that case to trial," he said. But the 15-year-old boy admitted to having nonconsensual sex with Daisy's friend, was charged as a minor, and made a plea deal to serve several months in a juvenile facility, according to local public radio station KCUR.
Now Anonymous, the amorphous collective of online activists, pranksters, and hackers, is on the case. The group is credited with bringing national attention to cases like this through internet and social-media campaigns. It's also responsible for sometimes employing questionable, borderline illegal tactics to expose the people they think are to blame. Such was the case in Steubenville, Ohio, where two high school football players were accused of raping a girl. An offshoot of Anonymous gained access to private social-media accounts and leaked videos and photos that revealed the identities of many high school students who were caught talking about the rape on camera but were never charged with crimes. Though the group's intentions may have been in the right place, Anonymous' tactics also swept up the victim in its crusade for justice, exposing her identity to the world. Yesterday, the group released a statement announcing their campaign #OpMaryville and #Justice4Daisy:
We demand an immediate investigation into the handling by local authorities of Daisy's case. Why was a suspect, who confessed to a crime, released with no charges? How was video and medical evidence not enough to put one of these football players inside a court room? What is the connection of these prosecutors, if any, to Rep. Rex Barnett? Most of all, We are wondering, how do the residents of Maryville sleep at night?
Gabriella Coleman (no relation to the alleged victim), a McGill University anthropologist who is writing a book about Anonymous, calls these campaigns seeking justice for rape victims one of the group's more successful issues. After the hacktivist collective successfully turned Steubenville into a national story through its unforgiving rogue tactics, the group has been approached by dozens of alleged rape victims pleading for help. "It doesn't surprise me at all that they are going after this," Coleman says. "The fact that Anonymous is interested can bring massive attention to the issue."
But where there is vigilantism, there can also be collateral damage. Take the residents of Steubenville, who were painted as apologists for the two high school football stars that were convicted in March of raping a girl there. Outspoken feminist writer Katie J.M. Baker filed a dispatch from Steubenville in September for Jezebel and described the residents as traumatized by the events that transpired and despondent over the characterization of the entire community as being complicit with the act.
Townspeople who tried to set the record straight by talking to reporters told me they were dubbed victim-blaming rape apologists and received so many death threats they had to change their phone numbers and email addresses. "We supported and still support Jane Doe 100%," [one Steubenville resident] said. "But the focus shifted when we watched helplessly as the media ripped innocent people apart we’d known since we were babies." She said her priorities changed when commenters posted photos of her young children online and called for them to be raped because her husband is a Big Red coach. "That's when this became less about Jane Doe and more about an entire town being destroyed for what two people did," she said. "That's when Jane Doe's wellbeing took a backseat."
But Baker ultimately concluded opening a national conversation on rape culture, entitlement, and sexual consent is worth the possible fallout. "Horrible stories like this one make a strong case for narrative trumping nuance," Baker tells Mother Jones. "It's less important to me how this story [in Maryville] is different from Steubenville and more important that the country has Steubenville as a reference point in listing the ways the fight against rape culture is far from over—and we wouldn't if it wasn't for Anonymous, despite their mishandling of the Steubenville case."
In the coming days, Gabriella Coleman says she expects a coordinated campaign by Anonymous to get the local law enforcement back on the case, despite the dismissal of the charges. She said the group has learned from its past campaigns, including the Rehteah Parsons case in Canada, where the group successfully lobbied local law enforcement to reopen what had been considered a closed case.
"Unless there is publicity, a lot can fall through the cracks," Coleman says. "It's certainly the case that sometimes the publicity brought to a case has negative consequences, but one can also say bringing no publicity to the acts has even worse consequences."
Anonymous' #OpMaryville acts so far have fallen more in the prankster realm than in serious hacker sleuthing. Yesterday, the group exposed a restaurant that was linked to Barnett, and people subsequently flooded the Yelp page with negative reviews. But the collective is also asking the press to file Freedom of Information Act requests to look for any connection between Rex Barnett and the prosecutor who dropped the charges against the boys. They have also planned a demonstration in Maryville on October 22, asking supporters who cannot attend to send daisies in support.

Seriously?!?! STEUBENVILLE FOOTBALL COACH RENO SACCOCCIA GRANTED A NEW, TWO YEAR CONTRACT??? 24APR13

IF this happened in a Third World country people would make derisive comments because 'well it is the Third World and "those" people and what do you expect?'. But it isn't the Third World, it is Ohio, in America, and we expect better for our fellow citizens. Though we don't live in Steubenville we need to care about that community and what they have just been through, and so I hope you will join me in signing this petition demanding the Steubenville School Board fire Reno Saccoccia. He is not fit to be around children and should never be allowed to teach or coach children in any school ever again.
Coach Reno Saccoccia did nothing to report the horrible Steubenville rape--and evidence shows he might have even helped cover it up. The school board should fire him, but instead they just renewed his contract for two more years. Can you sign the petition to the Steubenville school board?

What the %$#&, Steubenville?!?
Since last year, Steubenville, Ohio football coach Reno Saccoccia has been embroiled in the horrible case of the high school football players who raped a 16-year old girl while she was unconscious. Publicly released texts from the now convicted football players indicate he knew about the rape and did nothing to report it--in fact it took two months for him to even suspend these boys from the team. During the trial, evidence showed that he might have even helped the boys cover it up. 1
So how does Steubenville respond? The school board in Steubenville, Ohio, just announced that they extended his contract for two more years.2
Seriously!?!? The Steubenville school board just sent the message to everyone in Steubenville--and in the country--that rape is not a crime that needs to be taken seriously.
Steubenville school board members all need to know: the world is still watching Steubenville, we’re still angry, and any coach who played a role delaying justice in this crime needs to be fired. Can you sign our petition? We’ll send it to the school board and to all the local press.
Sign the petition demanding that the Steubenville school board fire coach Saccoccia.
As one rape counselor explained in The Nation:3
"The school board chose to send a message. That message was that the health and continuity of the football team is more important than the health and safety of young women in that community... I truly hope they come to their senses. We’re all watching."
There’s been lots of outrage in the media about this decision already. And after all the attention on the case earlier this year, Steubenville police, school authorities, and Coach Saccoccia clearly want to put this case behind them. But first, the school board has to make it clear that nobody, especially well-respected school employees who have a big influence over students and the entire community, should be covering up the rape of a teenage girl.
Now, we all have to show them: the world is still watching. Shame on the entire Steubenville school board for allowing this to happen. They need to make it right by firing Reno Saccoccia now. Can you sign the petition?
Add your name.
Thanks for speaking out,

The Steubenville Gang Rape - A Timeline *Slight Update* 3JAN13

THIS makes me sick. I can not understand how a community could rally around those who raped this young woman, it shows low self esteem of Steubenville's women and the low mentality of Steubenville's "law enforcement and justice" communities. The football coach's comments are indefensible, but in that community probably typical. I hope the majority of the citizens in Steubenville are ashamed and outraged by this, but if they remain silent and allow the perpetrators get away with this then they are as guilty as those who committed this crime. We have seen the news reports about the Indian woman who was brutally raped in New Delhi, and who finally died from her injuries, and many no doubt have dismissed it as typical of "those people". Well, the people of Steubenville, Ohio are showing the world that we have too many of "those people" right here in the good old USA. From Daily Kos....

A timeline and presentation of the evidence of the Steubenville rape case.
Warning: Graphic descriptions and language ahead.
Let’s be clear about what’s happening in Steubenville, and what led up to it.
It was August 11th when an end-of-year celebration occurred in Steubenville, Ohio. The end of summer brought students from a number of nearby schools for a party that would end some of their high school careers, while others celebrated in one final fashion before the new semester began. What was intended to be a wild night of fun, with booze already illegally flowing in the hands of underage teenagers, quickly grew far more tragic than people could have anticipated.
On that night, one young woman was brutally violated. Her body was still, carried by her feet and hands. Word quickly spread of the night’s insidious turn. The evidence? A trail of twitter posts, youtube videos and Instagram photos painted a picture of rape. The young woman in question was from Weirton, West Virginia, not too far from Steubenville. Much of the evidence magically vanished, but some remained. When all the evidence was considered, it seemed she had gone unconscious, then sexually violated in a number of ways, included being urinated on and forcefully penetrated. At the end of the night she was deposited on the front steps of her parents’ home.
On August 22nd, Trent Mays and Ma’lik Richmond were arrested for the rape in question. Police accused the pair of carrying her between parties and violating her while she was in a state incapable of resisting.
The aftermath is nearly as tragic as the incident itself. The country prosecutor and judge charged with handling juvenile cases stepped away from the case. In a town as small as Steubenville, it is not unusual to hear they had close ties with the football team that Mays and Richmond belonged to. Though the sheriff asked for witnesses to step forward, no one seemed to want to.
Far worse were the active defenses of the football team in question. In a part of the country suffering economic difficulty, football can provide a bright light for a town to rally behind. It can also provide motivation for people to behave in ugly ways. The family in question received death threats for raising the rape accusations. Meanwhile, one Steubenville football coach, Nate Hubbard, said this: “The rape was just an excuse, I think. What else are you going to tell your parents when you come home drunk like that and after a night like that? She had to make up something. Now people are trying to blow up our football program because of it.” The sheriff involved with the case stated to a new crew that witnessing the crime but not reporting it was not illegal. This is false. Failing to report a crime is, itself, a crime.

With so much resistance to the rape accusations, how did the evidence begin coming to light? It’s related to the town’s resistance against the accusations. It took an online blogger, who accused the town of siding with the rapists, and even accusing the police department of favoritism, to begin moving the wheels of justice. Defamation lawsuits were filed against the blogger. As of this date, those lawsuits have been dropped, but the point of the resistance remains.
The evidence collected and presented were, in the eyes of law enforcement, not damning enough. This was when KnightSec, a hacktivist collective of Anonymous, stepped in. On January 1st they threatened to come forward with further information if those involved did not take responsibility. When no response came, a 12 minute video of those involved came out, in which one player incriminates himself by repeatedly referencing the girl as both “raped” and “dead”. They make various indications that they knew the girl had been raped. Both the individual on camera, as well as those talking around him, can be heard referencing to her as raped.

The same individual captured in the video posted this to their twitter the night of the incident:

And that a number of people were aware of it, far more than the few who came forward in the case, is made clear by other Tweets collected from that same night:

Prior to much of this evidence, several people involved claimed that they weren't sure it was rape, or that any force was used. Photos taken from the collectivist group produced this:

While Mays and Richmond have been accused, Nodianos' role in the rape case has gone overlooked. Additionally, charges against Cody Saltsman have been dropped. The photo directly above was posted by Saltsman, who claims he received the photo, but was not present at the time of the incident. On the other hand, he responded to Nodianos the night of the rape:

In a country where it seems the protection we afford women is often inconsistent, what's horrifying is that A.) A girl in that condition could be viewed as willing and that B.) People in the two have either refused to come forward or actively tried to suppress the truth of the rape case. Here is one member of the town blaming the victim:

And finally, to reinforce just how miserable members of society can behave, here we have this quote to reinforce how such attitudes are not only isolated, but wider spread than we would like to think. From a poster at deadspin:

YOU NEVER HAVE THE RIGHT TO RAPE SOMEONE.
