Verifying the violence of war has always been tricky.
There are baked-in incentives for governments to claim victory or obscure atrocities; people tend to seek out information that aligns with their geopolitical views. Now, with the exponential advancement of AI-generated images and videos, and the lack of trust this false media spurs, the situation has been exacerbated.
Mother Jones’ Arianna Coghill and Peter Berger approach this threat head on in a new video about the prevalence of AI-generated content about the United States and Israel's ongoing war with Iran.
There was one finding from their recent piece that really stood out to me: Users on X, Elon Musk’s social media platform, were asking the in-house chatbot Grok about whether or not the AI-generated videos of the war with Iran are real. And, the chatbot got it wrong.
As if the reality of what’s going on isn't already chilling enough, right?
