Yesterday Ivanka Trump was doing her best to hype the meeting between Donald Trump and murderous North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un. From Singapore, she shared a “Chinese proverb” with her followers on Twitter:
One problem … nobody can find the origin of this so-called ancient proverb. And when we say nobody can find it, that includes millions of Chinese who’ve been searching high and low. From NPR:
After a thorough search of the Analects of Confucius, Taoist texts and everything in between, nothing definitive has come up. But that hasn't stopped millions of Chinese social media users from making wild guesses like these, straight from Weibo, one of China's most popular social media sites:
临渊羡鱼不如退而结网 — It's better to knit a fishnet instead of standing by the river and hoping for fish.
观棋不语真君子 — Don't give advice while watching others playing a chess game.
勿以善小而不为 — Don't ignore small acts of kindness simply because they seem trivial.
己所不欲，勿施於人 — Don't force others to do things you don't want to do yourself.
吃不到葡萄说葡萄酸 — If you haven't tasted the grapes, don't say they're sour.
As you might imagine, her tweet is also being widely mocked by the Chinese.
A lack of a clear source for Trump's tweet has some people speculating the first daughter either made it up or, a more likely explanation, cut and pasted the saying from an unreliable website. In the meantime, the search for this "proverb" through ancient Chinese texts has become something of a viral Quixotic quest in China, filled with many a sarcastic comment:

Fortune cookie diplomacy seems about right. Back home in the states, the reaction was, to put it mildly, not a laughing matter.
On Wednesday night'sFull Frontal,Samantha Beedid a segment on theNew York Timesreport that the government has lost track of approximately 1,500 migrant children who were torn away from their parents at the border and handed off the Department of Health and Human Services. Bee called outIvanka Trump(who works at the White House when she's not trying topromote her brand in China) for tweeting atone-deaf picturesnuggling with her child as people were worrying about the missing children.
"You know, Ivanka, that’s a beautiful photo of you and your child, but let me just say, one mother to another: Do something about your dad’s immigration practices, you feckless c***! He listens to you! Put on something tight and low-cut and tell your father to fuckin’ stop it."
Rather than be angry about the fact that over a thousand children (CHILDREN!) are missing, the Outrage of the Day™ was over Bee's use of the C-word.
Both of the women's names were trending all day. Pro-Trump people were so outraged that Bee ultimately apologized.
I would like to sincerely apologize to Ivanka Trump and to my viewers for using an expletive on my show to describe her last night. It was inappropriate and inexcusable. I crossed a line, and I deeply regret it.
Okay America take a seat and get out your pencils. Today we're going to (once again) explain the difference between insults and blatant systemic racism against the perpetually oppressed. (sigh) I hope no one shoots us while we're learning.

It's absolutely wrong to call Ivanka a "feckless cunt." She's a lot more than that. She's a feckless cunt WIFE. She's a feckless cunt SISTER. She's a feckless cunt DAUGHTER. And she's a feckless cunt BUSINESSWOMAN. She contains feckless cunt MULTITUDES.
Call me old-fashioned but I think you should have to apologize for being complicit in an inhumane policy that separates children from their parents before someone has to apologize for being mad at you about it
The fact dudes fall for Ivanka’s permanent damsel-in-distress act is proof we’re too dumb to vote. She’s a middle-aged woman w a billion dollars who bought eyelash extensions so she can be like “help me Chris Cillizza you’re my only hope” and he charges suicidally into the fray
The difference between Samantha Bee and Roseanne Barr is that Bee called Ivanka a feckless cunt for being a feckless cunt and Barr called Valerie Jarrett an ape for being a black woman
I’m not sure you get to be offended by a comedian calling Ivanka the c-word if you voted for her father, who “moved on her like a bitch” so he could “grab ‘em by the pussy.”
Few things as racist as deliberately taking the children of Central Americans & Africans seeking asylum as a way to discourage asylum seekers. That's what this administration is doing. Samantha Bee isn't abetting that. Ivanka Trump is.
I won't use the c-word but I can say Ivanka Trump is an amoral grifter who runs sweatshops, who said she'd temper her father's worst impulses and did jack shit, whose husband is a predatory slumlord selling off access to the presidency, and she still thinks she gets to be likable
Is the media really going to play along with being more outraged with what Sam Bee said about Ivanka than with what Trump hasn’t said about Puerto Rico?
