Bison are a keystone species, creating a cascade of environmental conditions that benefit countless other wildlife. As bison graze, they prune and encourage growth of native grasses, fertilize the soils, and carve out habitat for smaller creatures. The Trump administration is weakening protections for American bison, our national mammal. After decades of persecution and being hunted to near extinction, bison were finally making a comeback in their native Montana range outside Yellowstone thanks to efforts by Tribes and conservation organizations. Now, however, the Trump administration has revoked grazing permits for 900 bison, evicting them from federal lands in the prairie grasslands of Montana’s northern Great Plains. They are also attempting to weaken bison conservation efforts in Yellowstone National Park by dismantling the park’s new management plan that Earthjustice has been defending in court. Amidst this onslaught of attacks, it’s more important than ever to speak up for species. Public comments matter, no matter who is in power. In the face of these environmental assaults, we need to remind our agencies that they work for us — not polluters. The oil industry and the U.S. and Alaskan governments are not prepared for the environmental damage and destruction that will result from any oil spill in the Arctic. The U.S. and Alaskan governments can not afford the cost of cleanup that will never be completed from such a spill and the oil companies, with little legal obligation, will walk away from their responsibilities rather than cut into their profit margins.You need to adopt Alternative C as part of the Comprehensive Conservation Plan for ANWR.
