President Trump has threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act and deploy the military to Minneapolis. This is another dangerous attempt to sow fear and turn the cities we love into places where people feel afraid to leave their homes. Yesterday, we also filed a class action lawsuit against ICE and CBP challenging federal agents' unconstitutional and illegal stops and arrests of people in Minnesota. We'll see the Trump administration in court. But at the same time, Congress is also deciding right now whether to reward ICE with more funding. Take action now: Stop ICE's attack on our communities. The killing of Renee Nicole Good and the ongoing ICE abuses have sparked national outrage. Across the country, thousands of people have come together to protest in all 50 states, more than 70,000 people from our ACLU community have written their Congressmembers to decry these attacks, and over 400 organizations have signed a letter demanding Congress withhold increases to DHS funding until real reforms are enacted. That pressure is working: Republican leadership has already been forced to stall and delay their bill. We can’t let up now. As Congress negotiates the DHS budget, we are drawing a clear line: no increased funding for ICE or Border Patrol. Add your name and tell Congress: No more money for ICE. Thank you for being in the fight with us, The ACLU Team MY E MAILS TO REP SUBRAMANYAM D-VA 10TH, SEN WARNER D-VA & SEN KAINE D-VA Reckless ICE and Border Patrol enforcement operations in Minneapolis and across the country now are hurting children, families and our communities. Congress must act now to rein in ICE. ICE's violent operations show a disregard for the law and our basic civil rights. The federal agents terrorizing our communities must leave Minneapolis before others are hurt by the administration's cruelty. For months, ICE and other federal agents have escalated their operations in neighborhoods across the country, resulting in increasingly disturbing scenes and illegal conduct. Our communities have been left reeling from Kavanaugh Stops committing and as agents have arrested U.S. citizens, dragged children from their beds in the middle of the night in zip-ties, smashed car windows, and even driven away from an arrest scene with a toddler still in the backseat. Homeland Security agents have murdered during their terrorizing Americans across the nation, now, ICE agents have tragically killed a beloved community member in Minneapolis. And yet, the administration has the audacity to ask Congress for even more money to detain and deport people. As a member of Congress, you have a responsibility to hold ICE accountable for these abuses and demand answers – for the safety of every person that you represent. Specifically, I'm urging you to: • Demand an end to the ICE operation in Minneapolis and stop other large-scale escalations in our communities • Oppose any further funding to ICE's enforcement and detention budget • Launch a transparent and independent investigation into the killing of Renee Nicole Good, ICE's reckless hiring spree, and its apparent failure to hold its agents accountable to the law We cannot sit idly by as our neighbors are killed. Every day, more people are subjected to abuse at the hands of ICE – and more of your constituents live in fear. I hope you'll act immediately to stop ICE's escalation and protect us all. Sincerely, |
