Tom Perriello Releases Two New TV Ads, Featuring Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Outlining His Vision for Virginia, and Urging Voters to Believe ‘Progress is Possible’

Today, Tom Perriello is releasing the fourth and fifth ads of his Democratic campaign for Virginia governor. The ads will air across Virginia in the final eight days of the primary campaign.

In the first ad, “Make Change,” U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren, who has endorsed Tom, speaks about Tom’s values, saying, “He’s somebody who says: I am going to make change — and I’m gonna make change not for the richest, not for the most powerful. I’m gonna make change to make this economy work better for hard-working families. That’s who he is.” The ad features footage from Tom’s rally with U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders this spring and his 2010 rally with President Barack Obama in Charlottesville, before closing with Tom speaking about his vision to leave no race or region behind in giving Virginians opportunities to succeed. Finally, Virginians are urged to vote June 13 as Tom says, “Let’s prove that Donald Trump’s values are not Virginia values.”

The second ad, “Progress is Possible,” features Tom speaking directly to Virginians, urging them to believe that progress is possible, despite threats to our values by President Donald Trump. “We’re not a nation of hate,” Tom says, before speaking of his family’s immigrant history. He then goes on to outline his agenda and vision for Virginia as governor, saying, “I’m running for governor because every Virginian deserves a shot, regardless of race or region. That means higher wages, good jobs in forgotten communities, and lower student debt. It won’t happen overnight, but we can never stop believing progress is possible.”

The ads will air statewide, joining previously released ads on air, until primary day, June 13.

She explains the core concept of her teaching, the central value, which is selfishness.

Ayn Rand is back in the news this week, thanks to Mitt Romney's selection of Paul Ryan as the GOP's VP nominee. As David Weigel explains elsewhere in Slate, Ryan's longtime (albeit partly disavowed) devotion to Rand could have consequences for American monetary policy if he and Romney are elected—while Rand's strident atheism may cause problems for Ryan on the campaign trail if reporters choose to bring it up.

What may get lost in this high-toned Rand discussion is just how much a part of popular culture she was in her own lifetime. Lest we forget, the YouTube user warpicachu has uploaded her long 1967 interview with Johnny Carson in two parts. Besides hearing Rand distill her philosophy into a few TV-friendly sentences, you'll also get another glimpse at late-night talk shows as they used to be. "We do like to sit down occasionally," Carson says, "and get some views of people who are important in the world today."

Earlier this month was the birthday of Ayn Rand, the controversial philosopher and novelist, who emigrated from the Soviet Union in 1926. Regardless of what one thinks of her ideas, there is no denying that she was a great American. When the American intelligentsia was playing footsie with Soviet communism, Rand unabashedly defended liberty and individual rights, America’s core values, famously declaring: “[The] United States of America is the greatest, the noblest and, in its original founding principles, the only moral country in the history of the world.”

But this proud naturalized American, who arguably did more than any contemporary figure to restore the faith of Americans in America, might have been hounded out of the country if one of our current crop of Republican hopefuls had been president when she arrived. Why? Because Rand lied and bent every rule to gain entry into the United States.
As a vehement anti-Bolshevist, she knew that she would die waiting in line if she applied for permission to permanently relocate to America, although that’s exactly what she intended to do. Temporary tourist visas were easier to land, but only for those who could prove they didn’t plan to settle here. So what did Rand do? She committed perjury. She convinced an American visa officer that she had a fiancé waiting for her in Russia whom she intended to marry after a six-month visit with her relatives in Chicago.
But Rand instead married an American citizen in 1929, gaining a path to citizenship. According to Mimi Gladstein’s biography, Rand timed her wedding before her visa, which she had gotten extended, finally expired.
However, others doubt that Uncle Sam would have handed a three-year extension to a Russian passport holder, raising suspicions that Rand might have been—gasp!—an illegal immigrant when she got married.

Creating Change in the Midst of Crisis: Re-thinking Our Values

In past years at Davos, I often found myself in early morning optional sessions on social responsibility, in small rooms on the third floor of the conference center, with people like Muhammad Yunus, the founder of the Grameen Bank in Bangladesh and a Nobel Peace Prize winner. But this year, Muhammad and I were on a panel in the main floor in a prime time plenary session at the World Economic Forum called “Re-thinking Values in the Post-Crisis World.” Because of the economic crisis, values have become a central conversation at Davos 2010.

We were joined by several CEOs, and all seemed to agree that underneath the economic crisis is also a crisis of values. Last year at Davos, I said that asking “When will the crisis end” was the wrong question, and the right question to ask was “How will this crisis change us?” So a year later, our panel took up the question of how much we are changing. I said that massive bank bonuses in the face of massive economic suffering were a moral scandal, but they were only the symptom of a deeper erosion of societal values. Many seemed to agree, and the word “greed” was lifted up as a primary cause of this crisis, as were “selfishness” and “short-termism.” The market is supposed to be a means, not an end in itself. The creation of wealth, necessary goods and services, and jobs -- including the goal of helping lift people out of poverty -- were all set aside for the narrowest goals of simply making as much money as possible. I talked about the need to build “a common good economy” with multiple stakeholders and not just shareholders; and Muhammad Yunus explained his concept of “social business” based on “selflessness” instead of selfishness. One CEO said, “the critics of capitalism are now rising up, and this time, they’re not Marxists.”

In his opening address later that day, World Economic Forum founder and Executive Chairman Klaus Schwab warned against the danger of thinking the crisis had passed and quickly getting back to “business as usual.” Schwab said the WEF was committed to “re-thinking our values, re-designing our systems, and re-building our institutions.” If we don’t do that, he said, the financial crisis will become a social crisis.

He then introduced Nicolas Sarkozy, the president of France, who was surprisingly candid and clear about the causes of this crisis: “the entrepreneur gave way to the speculator” out for a “fast buck.” It was an economics only for “here and now” resulting in a “depreciation of the future.” He asked, “How can we return the economy to the service of humankind?” Sarkozy suggested that it was time to put environmental law, labor law, and health law on the same level as trade law and even to consider taxing financial transactions. Banks, he said, have the job of assessing the risks of lending in order to finance the growth of the economy, not speculating for their own huge profits -- agreeing with President Obama’s efforts to dissuade banks from proprietary speculation.

And the French president specifically said we can no longer “relegate half of humanity to the sidelines” -- a theme I presented earlier in the day to a “social ideas laboratory” of leaders from business, politics, and civil society. I pointed out that even before this crisis, the global economic system was already failing half of God's children -- three billion people living on less than $2 per day. This is the time to bring them in and include them in the global economy.

These were not the issues at the center of discussion at Davos in past years. The shift shows the opportunity within crisis -- one that we dare not miss.
