Dear friends,

Over the last year and a half, I have traveled all over this country. We've held more than 40 events, in 26 states, and talked to almost half a million people. Just a few weeks ago I was in Ohio, Minnesota and Michigan with our great candidates - all of whom are running campaigns that I believe are going to lead to victory.

And what I can tell you without any fear of contradiction is that the American people do not want an oligarchic form of government, they do not want an authoritarian form of government, they do not want to live under a kleptocracy where a president gets rich by being president. They sure as hell are sick and tired of the arrogance and greed of the billionaire class, and they want an end to these horrific and unconstitutional wars that Trump is waging.

Most importantly, they are prepared to fight back.

Sisters and brothers -- we find ourselves living in an unprecedented moment in American history.

We live in the wealthiest country in the history of the world and, yet, we are asked to accept as “normal” the reality that tens of millions of Americans struggle every day to afford the basic necessities of life: food, housing, health care or education. And, while 60% live paycheck to paycheck, the Oligarchs have never had it so good.

We live in a “democracy,” but we are told that it is legal and proper for one man, the wealthiest person on earth, to spend $270 million in campaign contributions to help elect a president who then provides huge tax breaks and other benefits to the very rich.

We live in a nation whose Declaration of Independence in 1776 boldly proclaimed “that all men are created equal” while, today, the gap between the rich and poor is wider than ever and the top 1% owns more wealth than the bottom 93%.

And not to scare you, but nothing less than the very future of our country, our planet and our democracy depends on what we do next.

Next week, the Fight Oligarchy Tour is going back on the road -- returning to Maine for a pair of events after our last visit 8 months ago.

A lot has happened since then.

Graham Platner, who was virtually unknown and taking on the entire Democratic Party establishment in his race for U.S. Senate, is now the presumptive nominee in the campaign to defeat Senator Susan Collins.

And Troy Jackson, running for Governor of Maine, who started as a significant underdog in his race now finds himself in a competitive campaign for the Democratic nomination.

Before I get to Maine, I am hoping you can split a contribution between Troy Jackson's campaign and two other candidates who are worthy of our support:

The first is Will Lawrence who is running for Congress in a competitive Democratic primary in Michigan. He is an accomplished organizer who co-founded the youth-led Sunrise Movement. Trey Martin is running for Congress in Oklahoma. He is an Ironworker, union president, and eighth-generation Oklahoman who knows Oklahoma and the people who make it work. Claire Valdez is a union organizer who worked minimum-wage fast food jobs and understands firsthand how this economy fails working people. In my view, Congress needs more voices who come from America's working class. Claire has the experience and vision we need to take on the oligarchy and fight for unions, Medicare for All, and affordable housing. I’m proud to endorse her campaign for Congress.

Needless to say, given our corrupt campaign finance system, our strong progressive candidates are taking on powerful special interests and their super-PACs. They need our help. Trump’s envoy went to Greenland to make ‘friends.’ They were left unimpressed.

President Donald Trump’s envoy to Greenland says he got a warm welcome on his first visit this week. But the mood on the Arctic island was decidedly frostier, with one of its most prominent lawmakers calling the visit “appalling” and “offensive.”

Pipaluk Lynge, who chairs Greenland’s foreign and security policy committee, slammed Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry’s trip as “a clear attempt to divide us” during the sensitive negotiations on the future of the semi-autonomous Danish territory.

She singled out his attempts to offer chocolate chip cookies to a group of Greenlandic children, seen by some as a surreal effort to win approval despite grown-up Greenlanders saying no to American advances.

“I think it’s remarkable that they feel welcome even though they weren’t invited,” Lynge said in an interview with NBC News.

Trump has caused outrage in Greenland and Europe by suggesting he could use force to seize the island, which has vast mineral resources and is strategically positioned in a region increasingly contested between the United States, Russia and China. Most officials and experts agree that were the U.S. to invade a fellow NATO member, it would spell the end of the troubled military alliance.

While Trump has rowed back these explicit militaristic threats, his designs on Greenland have not gone away. Arriving this week, Landry said his mission was to “make friends” but also that it was time for Washington “to put its footprint back” on the Arctic territory.

There was little evidence of any friendliness on the street, with the governor being heckled by people shouting “Don’t come here” and others giving him the finger.

Polls consistently show Greenlanders overwhelmingly reject American annexation, with pollster Sune Steffen Hansen finding in February that 76% were against and 8% for the idea.

“We don’t want to be Americans,” said Qarsoq Høegh-Dam, a lawmaker who represents Greenland in the Danish parliament and wants independence from Copenhagen. He described the “extraordinary” situation in which “an ally is coming to us with what is basically an ultimatum.”

Despite the anger and fear, the Greenlandic government has acknowledged a willingness to listen to U.S. security concerns. Negotiators from Greenland, Denmark and the U.S. are currently holding a high-level, closed-door “working group” trying to find a way forward. One reported suggestion on the table is increasing American military presence in Greenland, which since 1951 has hosted a U.S. base.

Landry’s office did not respond to an emailed request for comment. Speaking to journalists during his visit, he said that Trump had told him to “go over there and make as many friends as we can get.” He said he was there “simply to build relationships, to look, to listen and to learn,” and alleged that Greenland had been “ignored” by the U.S. until Trump took office.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who was in Sweden on Friday for a summit of NATO countries’ foreign ministers, told reporters Friday that Greenland had not been directly discussed, but said “there’s a growing commitment” to make Arctic security a regular focus of NATO engagements, “for obvious reasons.”

The White House said Landry was there “to further strengthen U.S.-Greenlandic ties and engage with local leaders,” assistant press secretary Olivia Wales said in an email. The U.S. is “optimistic that we are on a good trajectory to address U.S. national security interests in Greenland,” she said, saying Landry was doing “a great job” as governor and special envoy.

That could not be further from the opinion of many Greenlanders.

“We’ve seen how they treated the Native Americans, how they treated the Black people and the Mexicans over the last couple of years,” said Lynge, the lawmaker in Greenland’s parliament, which has power over most domestic policies while Denmark controls defense and security. “Most of us in Greenland tend to be Indigenous peoples, and we tend to stand with other Indigenous peoples.”

She called it “peculiar” that Landry had visited while this working group was still sitting. “It’s clear for me to see that he’s trying to affect us.”

Unlike America’s ambassador to Denmark, Ken Howery, Landry was not confirmed by the Senate but rather appointed by Trump himself.

“This is an f—ed up situation,” Høegh-Dam said. “This is not an accredited diplomatic envoy, but nonetheless this is someone who has close ties to the highest office in the United States.”

Landry was not invited to Greenland by its government. He held a “courtesy meeting” with Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen, who said it was held with “mutual respect and in a positive atmosphere.” But Nielsen remained resolute that his country was “not for sale,” he said afterward. The governor also attended a business conference, as well as the unveiling of a new U.S. Consulate in Greenland’s capital, Nuuk, an event Thursday that attracted hundreds of demonstrators chanting “No means no.”

One thing that caused particular uproar during Landry’s visit was the accompaniment of a U.S. doctor to “assess the medical needs” of the island. This is a deeply sensitive issue. Greenlanders have been victims of decades of medical abuses under Danish rule, including women and girls as young as 12 being fitted with IUDs in the 1960s and ‘70s in an apparent attempt to reduce the population.

Greenland Health Minister Anna Wangenheim said it was “deeply problematic when people with a political mission to make Greenland part of the United States send a so-called volunteer doctor to Nuuk to ‘assess our needs.’”

Her statement decried “political envoys with hidden strategic interests” and pointed out that “Greenlanders are not experimental subjects in a geopolitical project.”

Something else criticized by Greenlandic officials was Landry’s interaction with a group of children while on a walkabout in Nuuk. He offered them unlimited chocolate chip cookies if they ever visited his governor’s mansion in Louisiana.

Nielsen said his compatriots would not be so easily wooed.

“We have our red lines,” Nielsen told Denmark’s public broadcaster DK. “And no matter how many chocolate cookies we get, we are not going to change them.”

For others, this was more sinister: an emissary from a hostile state trying to win over children after having been firmly rejected by their parents and politicians.

“I think it’s appalling and I think it’s offensive” that he “went on the streets and tried to affect children” like that, Lynge said.

There is another wrinkle in the question over who should control Greenland: While most Greenlanders balk at the idea of being taken over by America, some also want to be freed from Danish rule. Polls vary, with a survey last year finding that 56% favored independence, with another in February finding 62% wanted the island to stay part of Denmark.

“There is no such thing as a ‘better colonizer,” said Sara Olsvig, a former lawmaker in both the Greenlandic and Danish parliaments. She is now chair of the Inuit Circumpolar Council, which represents 180,000 Inuit across Alaska, Canada, Greenland and Russia.

“It’s important to remember that as a people and as a nation, we have already been through colonization once,” she said. “And we don’t want to go through it again.”

Matteo Bassetti said the U.S. ski superstar should explain one thing to the president and Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

A prominent Italian doctor swiped at President Donald Trump and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. in social media posts praising the medical care that injured American skiing star Lindsey Vonn received in Italy after crashing out of the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics.

Matteo Bassetti — the head of the Infectious Diseases Clinic at Policlinico San Martino University Hospital in Genoa and a former Yale University School of Medicine scholar — began his post on Instagram by sending Vonn his “best wishes for a speedy recovery” following her return to the United States.

But he then added a pointed dig at Trump and Kennedy, and the overall situation surrounding health care in the U.S.:

“Vonn was able to appreciate Italy’s extraordinary public health care system, which took care of her with three surgical procedures. In Italy, unlike in her country, we take care of everyone: rich or poor, VIPs or nobodies, Americans or Italians. If she gets the chance, she should explain to Trump and Kennedy Jr. what it means to take care of those who are ill.”

Bassetti shared the message in Italian with his 396,000 followers alongside a photograph of Vonn receiving treatment in a hospital in Italy.

In a later post, responding to criticism, Bassetti clarified that he “didn’t write that in America they only treat those who have money” but instead “wrote (and it’s quite a different thing) that in Italy we treat everyone, unlike in the USA, thanks to our extraordinary national health system.”

“Even if you have nothing and have no insurance policy whatsoever, not only do you get treated in an emergency, but also for elective procedures,” he continued. “I worked in the USA and I know very well, because I saw it with my own eyes, that certain surgical procedures and certain therapies (including those for HIV and cancer) are not performed or provided if you are not insured.”

Bassetti has criticized American health care on multiple previous occasions.

Earlier this week, he said that “thanks to the #antivax thinking of those who govern it,” the United States has become “Measles Country.”

“If we were an advanced country (from a health perspective), we would require Americans to be vaccinated before entering Italy,” he added.

The doctor also called out Joe Biden in 2024 when the then-president was pictured boarding Air Force One without a mask, despite having just tested positive for COVID-19.

As Washington battles over access to health care, a Post journalist’s experience at a public hospital in Brazil shone light on a fundamentally different system.

PARATY, Brazil — My son had a high fever, so my wife and I decided to cut short our beach vacation and head home, worried about the quality of health care so far from Rio de Janeiro. I packed our bags, took one last look at the calm shoreline and headed out to load up the car.

I popped open the trunk door of our hatchback and commenced with that intricate game of Tetris practiced by all vacation dads.

I’d noticed weeks before that rust was eating away at one of the hatch door’s support beams but hadn’t given it much thought — not, at least, until it suddenly snapped and the full weight of the door came slamming down on me.

I stumbled away and grabbed my head, only realizing how badly I’d been hurt when I pulled my hand away and saw it was covered in blood. There was more on my clothes and in the dirt below. I fell to the ground, yelled for my wife and, suddenly woozy, heard muffled voices beginning to holler for someone to call an ambulance.

Even after six years in Brazil as The Washington Post’s Rio de Janeiro bureau chief, I confess one of my first thoughts was stubbornly American. Out of the murkiness, it came with sudden clarity: How much is this going to cost me?

Six hours later — after an ambulance ride, CT scan, X-ray cranial imaging and six stitches in my head — I had my answer: $0.

At a time when health care remains one of the most divisive issues in Washington — and the Congressional Budget Office estimates President Donald Trump’s signature domestic legislation could leave millions more Americans uninsured — my unexpected admission to a Brazilian public hospital served as an education of sorts on a fundamentally different system.

Health care is a basic right in Brazil, enshrined in the constitution. Every one of its 215 million citizens — in addition to 2 million foreign residents — is entitled to free care in what has become the world’s largest public health system.

The government says the Sistema Único de Saúde — known to everyone here as SUS — tallies an astounding 2.8 billion admissions per year. More than 7 in 10 Brazilians rely on it entirely, receiving everything from mundane care to complex surgeries on the public dime.

SUS is far from perfect. Patients wait in long lines for specialized care. Lawmakers leave it underfunded. Workers routinely go on strike. It buckled during the worst days of the coronavirus pandemic and hospitals began turning patients away, leading to scenes of desperation across the country and inflaming political divisions.

Former President Jair Bolsonaro, a hard-line conservative, sought to privatize the system but quickly backed down after public backlash, organized under the banner “Brazil Needs SUS.” Current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, a leftist who’s long championed a robust social safety net, has since vowed to relieve the strain on SUS with a fresh funding package.

“We’re not going to let this program fail,” he said. “Because the poor need to be treated like people.”

Perhaps because I was more comfortable with a system more similar to the United States’, my family and I had always opted for Brazil’s private health care network, where the best hospitals rival anything in the developed world. Our son was delivered and receives his pediatric care in Rio de Janeiro’s private system.

So on that fateful Friday morning, when my son’s fever spiked in this seaside village where the only hospital is a public one, we called his pediatrician and decided to drive the four hours home. But the hatch door had a different plan. The first responders took my vital signs, wrapped my head in a thick bandage and helped me into an ambulance that had been dispatched by Hospital Hugo Miranda. Off we went.

The contrast with the American system was immediately apparent — not from what hospital staff asked, but what they didn’t. No one inquired about our insurance coverage. No one even jotted down my tax identification number, which is solicited here even when paying parking meters or buying a bottle of toothpaste.

I was pushed by wheelchair from room to room. First a nook where I received a shot of pain medication. Then a cramped room where a doctor injected a local anesthetic and closed my six-centimeter wound with six stitches. Then onward to an imaging suite where X-rays were taken to ensure the injury had been superficial. And finally to an adjoining center where a CT exam was performed to verify there was no bleeding in the brain.

As the hours went by, I saw Brazil’s diversity on display in the halls of the hospital. The population of Paraty is only 47,000, but the historic port town serves as the regional anchor for a vast dispersion of shoreline communities. Many people travel by boat across enormous distances to reach the hospital. On Friday, they crowded into waiting areas and exam rooms alongside the urban working class and affluent out-of-towners — all guaranteed the same level of care. For 40 minutes while waiting to be stitched up, I sat wordlessly next to a barefoot man with one eye.

In the early afternoon, I was called back to the see the doctor who’d performed my intake. She counseled rest, prescribed pain medication and antibiotics, and sent me on my way.

But while I was getting better, my son’s fever had reached 104 degrees. We sought treatment for him, too. Hugo Miranda immediately admitted him; after an hour of waiting, his name was called.

Ten minutes with a pediatrician was all we needed for a diagnosis: tonsillitis.

The pediatrician prescribed antibiotics and Tylenol to reduce the fever, then called in the next patient on her list.

My son’s hospital bill was the same as mine: $0.

It’s time for the US to guarantee healthcare to all 4MAI25

It’s time for the US to guarantee healthcare to all
We spend almost twice as much per capita on healthcare as any other country on Earth. It’s time to change that.

I have held public meetings all over Vermont and in many parts of the country. At these gatherings I almost always ask a very simple question: is our healthcare system broken? And the answer I always receive is: Yes! The American healthcare system is broken. It is outrageously expensive. It is horrifically cruel.

Today, we spend almost twice as much per capita on healthcare as any other country on Earth. According to the most recent data, the United States spends $14,570 per person on healthcare compared with just $5,640 in Japan, $6,023 in the United Kingdom, $6,931 in Australia, $7,013 in Canada and $7,136 in France. And yet, despite our huge expenditures, we remain the only major country on Earth not to guarantee healthcare to all people as a human right.

While the insurance companies and drug companies continue to make huge profits, over 85 million Americans are either uninsured or under-insured. The result: some 68,000 people in our country die each year because they can’t afford to go to a doctor when they should, and more than half a million Americans go bankrupt due to medically related debt. In the US today, 42% of cancer patients deplete their entire life savings within the first two years of their diagnosis while one out of every four declared bankruptcy or lost their homes to foreclosure or eviction in 2022.

That is insane and unspeakable. Getting cancer in the US should not lead to financial ruin.

In terms of life expectancy, we live four years shorter, on average, than people in other wealthy countries, while the typical working-class person in the US lives seven fewer years than the wealthy. We also have the dubious distinction of having, by far, the highest infant mortality rate of any other wealthy country on Earth.

As bad as our overall healthcare system is, our primary care system is even worse. Today, tens of millions of people live in communities where they cannot find a doctor, a dentist or a psychologist even when they have insurance, while others have to wait months to get seen. Despite our massive healthcare expenditures, we don’t have enough doctors, dentists, nurses, mental health practitioners, pharmacists or home healthcare workers – and one out of four Americans cannot afford to purchase the medicine their doctors prescribe.

For all of these reasons and many more, I am proud to be re-introducing Medicare for All in the Senate. My colleague, the representative Pramila Jayapal, is introducing this same bill in the House.

Our legislation would provide comprehensive healthcare coverage to all without out-of-pocket expenses and, unlike the current system, it would provide full freedom of choice regarding healthcare providers.

No more insurance premiums, no more deductibles, no more co-payments, no more filling out endless forms and fighting with insurance companies.

And comprehensive means the coverage of dental care, vision, hearing aids, prescription drugs and home and community-based healthcare.

Importantly, Medicare for All would give Americans the freedom to switch jobs without losing their health insurance. Under our legislation, healthcare becomes a human right, guaranteed to all, and not a job benefit.

Would a Medicare-for-all healthcare system be expensive? Yes. But, while providing comprehensive healthcare for all, it would be significantly LESS expensive than our current dysfunctional system because it would eliminate an enormous amount of the bureaucracy, profiteering, administrative costs and misplaced priorities inherent in our current for-profit system. In fact, the congressional budget office has estimated that Medicare for All would save Americans $650bn a year.

Under Medicare for All there would no longer be armies of insurance employees billing us, telling us what is covered and what is not covered and hounding us to pay our hospital bills. This simplicity not only substantially reduces administrative costs, but it would make life a lot easier for patients, doctors and nurses who would never again have to fight their way through the nightmare of insurance company bureaucracy.

As we speak, Republicans are working overtime to make a bad healthcare situation even worse. They want to pass a “reconciliation bill” that would decimate Medicaid and throw millions of Americans off the healthcare they have in order to give huge tax breaks to billionaires.

Obviously, we must defeat that terrible legislation. But we must do much more. We cannot simply defend the status quo in healthcare and the Affordable Care Act – legislation that has provided massive amounts of corporate welfare to the big insurance companies and big drug companies – while premiums, deductibles, co-payments and the price of medicine has soared.

The time is NOW to rethink healthcare in America. The time is NOW to declare that healthcare in our country is a right and not a privilege. The time is NOW to stand up to the greed and power of special interests who make huge profits off of a cruel and broken system. The time is NOW to pass Medicare for All.

Enacting Medicare for All would be a transformative moment for our country.

It would not only keep people healthier, happier and increase life expectancy, it would be a major step forward in creating a more vibrant democracy. Imagine what it would mean for the people of our country if we had a government that represented the needs of ordinary people and not just powerful corporate interests and billionaire campaign donors.

This is America. We can do it.
