It’s that time of the year where Spotify users spam their social media pages to show off their “Spotify Wrapped” for the year. Spotify users learn from the app their top five musicians, songs, and musical genres.  Check out our Spotify Wrapped post on Facebook, Instagram, X (Twitter), Bluesky, and Threads. The concept of the “Spotify Wrapped” got us thinking: What if we did our own wrap up? But instead of a musical wrap up, we highlighted some pieces from the past two weeks we think are worth your time to read and listen to: Patriotic Millionaire Board Member Drew Pomerance spent an hour with Dominique DiPrima’s show “First Things First” on KBLA. Drew and Dominique cover a wide range of topics, ranging from why he is a Patriotic Millionaire, to why he supports a cost of living tax cut, to why we need tax reform to close loopholes currently being exploited by the top .01%. Drew and Dominique’s conversation is nuanced and thoughtful about what led us to this point and how we can save our democracy from the dangers and influence of extreme wealth. 2. Fremantle Shipping News: Interview with Scott Ellis – Patriotic Millionaire We know we’re the US chapter of the Patriotic Millionaires, but that doesn’t stop our members from speaking to people across the globe. Fremantle Shipping News is an online magazine all about Freo (down in Australia!), and a regular Fremantle Shipping News reader wrote to the magazine’s editor plugging our group and our work. After some careful coordination (time zones can be tricky!), Patriotic Millionaire Scott Ellis appeared on the magazine’s podcast. As they describe it: “The podcast…ranges freely over Scott’s contributions to the topic of excessive wealth, including his papers titled Let’s talk Pathway to Shared Prosperity and The $30 Million Success Project, as well as the Great Economy Project initiated by Patriotic Millionaires. It’s a podcast designed to make one think.” 3. Zeteo: The Washington Post Wants to Protect Its Owner From a Wealth Tax by Bob Lord The Washington Post Editorial Board caught our eye last week with its piece “Switzerland just chose its economy over a wealth tax. America, take note.”1 The editorial board praised the people of Switzerland for rejecting a proposed tax on inheritances and gifts. It would apply to those in excess of 50 million Swiss francs (about $62 million). Naturally, that ruffled our feathers, and Bob Lord, our Senior Vice President of Tax Policy, wrote a piece for Zeteo rejecting the editorial board’s position. It felt especially important to us to point out that the very policies the Post was ranting against is the latest example of the Post editorial board aligning itself with owner Jeffrey Bezos’s interests and causes without disclosing any potential conflict of interest to readers. As Bob writes in the piece, “The real point of the editorial, though, was its closing paragraph. There, the Post writers implied, rather blatantly, that US voters should reject any 2028 presidential candidate (the Democratic candidate, obviously) who would reduce the whopping exemption from federal estate and gift taxes ($30 million for a married couple) so as to ‘make a political point of taxing the rich” rather than “prioritizing healthy public finances.’ At no point did the Post editorial board mention that the paper’s owner, Amazon founder and quarter-trillionaire Jeff Bezos, is the planet’s fourth-wealthiest human – nor did the authors mention that Bezos stands to benefit more from their tax policy prescriptions than nearly anyone else.” Thank you for all you do, Jenna P.S.
