Wind energy is growing fast. While it still accounts for less than 5 percent of the United States' total electricity mix, wind is by far the biggest source of renewable energy other than hydroelectric dams, and it accounted for 23 percent of new power production capacity built last year. Some experts think wind could provide a fifth of the world's energy by 2030. But wind in the US is always in a perilous position, thanks to its heavy reliance on a federal tax credit that is routinely attacked in Congress; the subsidy was allowed to expire at the end of last year, and its ultimate fate remains unclear.
Fortunately, wind won't be subject to the whims of legislators for much longer, according to a new analysis from the Energy Department. The new report found that within a decade, wind will be cost-competitive with fossil fuels like natural gas, even without a federal tax incentive.
Cost reductions and technology improvements will reduce the price of wind power to below that of fossil-fuel generation, even after a $23-per-megawatt-hour subsidy provided now to wind farm owners ends, according to a report released Thursday.
"Wind offers a power resource that's already the most competitive option in many parts of the nation," Lynn Orr, under secretary for science and energy at the Energy Department, said on a conference call with reporters. "With continued commitment, wind can be the cheapest, cleanest power option in all 50 states by 2050."
That would be a huge win for slowing climate change. The report finds that it could also lead to billions of dollars of benefits to the American public, from lower monthly electric bills to fewer air-pollution-related deaths.

This is embarrassing. FIND OUT WHERE YOUR LEGISLATORS STAND ON CLIMATE CHANGE from the LVC LEAGUE OF CONSERVATION VOTERS 12AUG13

HERE is the opportunity to find out where your legislators stand on climate change. Click the link to send a message to your Representative and Senators (mine is below, sent to Rep Gerry Connolly D VA and Sens Tim Kaine D VA and Mark Warner D VA)
Dear Legislator,
I have a simple question for you: Will you protect our planet for future generations by working to curb man-made global warming now?
President Obama has laid out a bold action plan to curb global warming pollution. Will you support that plan? Will you also push for legislation in Congress to move us towards a clean energy future?

As your constituent, I expect you to make addressing climate change a top priority.

I expect you to oppose the keystone xl pipeline and to support ending tax breaks and subsidies for the coal, oil and gas industries and to redirect federal money these industries would receive to renewable energy and conservation projects.

I expect you to pass national regulations on fracking and to end fracking on public lands.

I expect you to adequately fund the EPA and to oppose all attempts to weaken our environmental laws and to make sure the laws we have in place are enforced

Do you know if your members of Congress support action on climate change?
072511BoehnerCantor

This week, we’re launching a massive campaign to make climate change a top issue for every member of Congress. A campaign to show Washington that our movement has the power to make it politically toxic for legislators who reject climate science -- and that we’ll back those who stand up for climate action.
To kick it off, we’re partnering with our allies to launch a Day of Action on Climate Change tomorrow. In 15 cities across the country, hundreds of LCV members will deliver Climate Change Denier Awards to their members of Congress and hold rallies outside their district offices.
But for LCV supporters like you in Herndon, we have a different request:
To target the right people in the months ahead, we need to know where every member of Congress stands on climate change. And the best way to find out if someone’s an anti-science crusader or an environmental ally worth supporting, is if thousands of their constituents -- like you -- ask them.
Of course, there are some Big Oil-backed politicians who we already know are climate change deniers.
Take Colorado’s Representative Mike Coffman, who says that “climate change is naturally occurring” and humans’ influence on global warming is “subject to debate.” Or Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson who has no shame in announcing, “I absolutely do not believe in the science of man-caused climate change... it’s not proven by any stretch of the imagination.”
For folks like you and me, who want to protect future generations from the effects of climate change, it would be a huge embarrassment to say any of those statements publicly. But these climate change deniers don’t even blink an eye when sharing their ignorant views with the public. That has to change.
So, we’ll be launching TV ads, protests, emails, and phone calls in the weeks ahead to call out these Big Oil lackeys and show them that they are out of touch with the needs of their constituents.
But there are so many members of Congress who we don’t have on the record either way. That’s why we need you to get the conversation going today. By sending a message, you’ll not only help us gather valuable information, but you’ll be showing your member of Congress that climate change is the top issue for you as a constituent and it should be for them too.
As families across America suffer from increasingly intense wildfires, floods, heat, and storms, it’s just plain unacceptable for anyone to be opposing action to fight the climate change that is fueling this extreme weather.
With your help, we can let every member of Congress know that there will be consequences if they don’t make climate action a priority. But the first step is reaching out to them with a simple question, so thanks for sending your message today.
Best,
Vanessa

LEAGUE OF CONSERVATION VOTERS 2012 SCORECARD 20FEB13

THE LCV has released it's Environmental Scorecard on the 112th Congress, and I have to agree with their comment, at least it is over. Click on the interactive map and links to see how your congressional delegation rates.....

LCV logo header
Map cob3.jpg

Today is a big day for us. Not only are we releasing the 2012 National Environmental Scorecard, but we're also unveiling a completely new, interactive Scorecard website, where you can see all the votes we've scored going back more than 40 years.
Right now, I'm about to jump on a call to share this news with the national press, but I wanted to make sure that LCV members like you got an exclusive look at our new site before anyone else lays eyes on it.

Find out where your members of Congress stood on the most important environmental votes of the year. Explore LCV's 2012 National Environmental Scorecard on our new website here >>
Unfortunately the best thing that can be said about this session of the 112th Congress is that it's over.
This was hands down, the most anti-environmental House of Representatives ever. Continuing their bad record from 2011, Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) and Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) forced through radical bills attacking cornerstone environmental laws such as the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act. They pushed to drill off our shores and in the Arctic Refuge, tried to approve the harmful Keystone XL tar sands pipeline, and attacked protections for our national parks, forests, and wildlife.
If it wasn't for our champions in the U.S. Senate and the Obama Administration, many of the environmental and public health safeguards we rely on would have been lost.
Want to know if your members of Congress stood with people or polluters last year? Take a look at the 2012 National Environmental Scorecard here.
The good news is: if we can educate the public about anti-environmental legislators' records, we can build the public pressure to hold them accountable and improve our environmental policies in the years to come.
So that's why we've completely overhauled our Scorecard website to make it easier for you to access and share the information not just from this year, but every year since the National Environmental Scorecard was first released in 1971.
On our new website you can not only read about the votes and check out the scores for your members of Congress, but you can also see how your state's congressional delegation has voted compared to the rest of the country using interactive charts and maps. You can look at votes taken over the years on just one issue like clean energy or climate change. And we've built in share features that make it easy to spread the word on social media or send a message to your members of Congress to thank or reprimand them depending on their vote history.
I hope you'll take a moment to explore and share our new National Environmental Scorecard website today at: scorecard.lcv.org
Thanks for helping us make a major splash with this release by getting the word out today.

TEST IT MAYBE? YOU GOTTA SEE THIS VIDEO PARODY OF CALL ME, MAYBE FROM THE LEAGUE OF CONSERVATION VOTERS 11SEP12

OH MY GOSH, this is one of the best video take-offs of Call Me, Maybe I have ever seen!!! The League of Conservation Voters (a nonpartisan environmental organization) is spot on with this video for their campaign to get the Safe Chemicals Act passed this year. Watch the video and then click the link to send a message to your Senators asking them to pass the act.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHUHOqqqdz8&feature=player_embedded

LCV logo header

TestItMaybe
Watch our video.

We’ve used almost every tactic to convince Congress to pass the Safe Chemicals Act, which would help us keep toxic chemicals out of our everyday products. We’ve held stroller brigades, sent tens of thousands of emails, staged rallies at the U.S. Capitol, joined twitter town halls, and more. But there’s one thing we haven’t tried yet: a music video.
Since everyone from Justin Bieber to the U.S. Olympic Swim Team has done their own renditions of the summer hit “Call Me, Maybe,” we decided it was time for us to make our own video to raise awareness about why Congress must pass the Safe Chemicals Act now.
Yesterday, Congress returned from their August recess. But since it’s an election year, they will only be in session for eight days before hitting the campaign trail until November’s elections. We can’t wait any longer for legislation that will keep cancer-causing BPA out of canned food or dangerous flame retardants out of our couches. So, we must convince the Senate to vote now to protect our health and our families.
How do we do that? We have to flood their inboxes with thousands of messages that they cannot ignore. To get the numbers that will make them pay attention, we need to rally everyone who cares about this issue and educate everyone who doesn’t know about it yet. That’s why we made this “Test It, Maybe” video along with a series of other videos from our state LCV partners featuring testimonies from people who have been affected by the toxic chemicals in our everyday products that have gone unregulated for decades.
Right now, our nation’s primary chemical law is the Toxic Substances Control Act, which has not been updated since it was passed in 1976. The law is badly broken, allowing the EPA to test only a few hundred of the over 84,000 chemicals on the market today. This means that most of the chemicals in our products — everything from the backpacks our children wear to the furniture in our houses — are not tested for their long term effects on our health and the environment.
Rising rates of diseases like asthma, diabetes, childhood cancers, infertility, and learning and behavioral disorders have been linked to toxic chemical exposure. We need our government to protect our families from these chronic illnesses by requiring adequate testing of chemicals before they accumulate in our bodies and environment. The Safe Chemicals Act will ensure that the chemicals surrounding us every day are safe, but we’ll only be able to make it a reality if you speak out today.
After you send your email to your senators, we’ll set you up with a page where you can watch and share the “Test It, Maybe” video. So, don’t wait to take action. Make your voice heard now.
Together, we can hold the chemical industry accountable to safer standards and protect our families from harmful chemicals. So let’s go!
Best,

Barack Obama for President from the LCV, the LEAGUE OF CONSERVATION VOTERS 18APR12

THE League of Conservation Voters has endorsed President Obama for re-election! Check out their video and sign on to help President Obama in in November 2012!

Obama Video

You spoke, we listened.
That’s why today we proudly announce LCV’s endorsement of President Barack Obama for re-election.
Last month, we asked LCV members whether we should endorse President Obama – and 91.3 percent of you said “Yes.”
Now, we need your help to mobilize in key battleground states that President Obama must win in November.
President Obama has fought to take control of our energy future from Big Oil and other dirty energy interests who have put polluter profits ahead of our environment. The president’s first-term accomplishments include:
  • Proposing the first-ever national standards to limit the harmful industrial carbon pollution from power plants that contributes to global warming.
  • Fighting to eliminate Big Oil’s special tax breaks and invest the savings in clean, renewable energy sources that create jobs.
  • Implementing the first-ever national standards to limit mercury and other toxic air pollution from power plants, which will save lives and reduce asthma attacks.
  • Proposing new national standards to increase fuel efficiency standards to 54.5 miles per gallon by the year 2025 – dramatically cutting our dangerous dependence on oil.
  • Doubling the country’s use of wind and solar power, while also making huge investments in energy efficiency.
Make no mistake: This year’s presidential election offers a stark choice. Mitt Romney, who refuses to acknowledge the scientific consensus on climate change, has fully adopted Big Oil’s agenda – even appointing a billionaire oil executive as his top energy advisor. So it’s not surprising that Romney has pledged to defend Big Oil’s special tax breaks, while also attacking vital clean energy policies.
It’s also not surprising that Big Oil is coming to his defense – in a big way. Oil and gas interests have given Romney more than $1 million in campaign cash, while the Koch brothers have pledged to spend $200 million in this year’s election. In fact, groups backed by the Koch brothers have already spent nearly $10 million this year attacking President Obama’s clean energy record. At the same time, Karl Rove’s Crossroads GPS has dropped millions on false and misleading TV ads.
President Obama can’t win in November without our help. So let’s get started! Watch our new video, pledge to get involved and then help spread the word.
Thank you for fighting for a cleaner, safer environment.
Sincerely,

Attend a Rally & Public Hearing on the Keystone XL Pipeline 29SEP11

ANOTHER call to action against the keystone xl pipeline, this from the League of Conservation Voters.....

This is our last formal opportunity to urge the Obama administration stop the massive Keystone XL tar sands pipeline.
A 1,700 mile-long tar sands oil pipeline—cutting across six states and passing through a variety of environmentally-sensitive areas—will pose serious risks to our environment and our communities. And the extraction and transportation process associated with dirty tar sands oil would produce more global warming pollution than traditional oil.
But time is running out, so we need to show the Obama administration how many of us oppose building a massive oil pipeline through the heart of our country.
WHAT: Keystone XL Public Hearing
WHERE: Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center, Atrium Hall, 1300 Pennsylvania Ave
WHEN: Friday, October 7th, 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM
RSVP: http://www.lcv.org/keystonexl
This is our last formal opportunity to express our opposition to the Keystone XL oil pipeline. The State Department will be making their final decision on the pipeline soon, so they need to hear from us now.
Be sure to RSVP, then encourage your friends and family in the area to RSVP as well—the more voices we have speaking out against the dangerous tar sands pipeline, the better chance we have to stop it.
Thank you,
Gene Karpinski

League of Conservation Voters
P.S. Also, be sure to join us at noon on Friday, October 7th, for a final rally outside the Ronald Reagan Building. The rally will feature speakers, music and lots of positive energy!

Your 2010 National Environmental Scorecard from LCV 17FEB11

CLICK on the header or the link to see how your Representative and Senators did.
As we noted earlier this week, we are in the midst of the most significant attack on the Environmental Protection Agency in the agency’s history. Big Oil and Dirty Coal – and their allies in Congress – are attempting to dismantle the commonsense safeguards that protect our environment and public health.
It is against this backdrop that we are releasing the 2010 National Environmental Scorecard, which provides objective, factual information about the most important environmental legislation considered and the corresponding voting records of all members of the second session of the 111th Congress.
The 111th Congress started off with great promise for the environment, most significantly with House passage of comprehensive energy and climate legislation. As the 2010 National Environmental Scorecard reflects, the successes of 2009 were followed by an incredibly disappointing second session in 2010.
Indeed, the most important votes of 2010 are the ones that didn’t happen: first and most importantly, the Senate failed to even begin debate on a comprehensive clean energy and climate bill that would have created jobs, increased America’s energy independence, and protected the planet from carbon pollution; next, the Senate failed to respond to the greatest disaster in our nation’s history — the catastrophic oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
While the lack of progress in 2010 is highly disappointing, we applaud those members of Congress who fought to protect public health and the environment and reduce our nation’s dangerous dependence on oil. Conversely, the 2010 Scorecard clearly exposes those members who put corporate polluters and other special interests ahead of the health and well-being of all Americans by opposing efforts to protect the environment.
Despite the disappointments of 2010, LCV will continue to work for environmental policies that protect our planet for future generations. We will also fight to protect the EPA and hold accountable those who seek to undermine our environmental protections. And we will call on you to contact your elected officials to urge them to support critical environmental legislation and oppose efforts to cripple the EPA in 2011 and beyond.
We also need your help to educate everyone you know about how members of Congress voted on the environment last year. After viewing the 2010 National Environmental Scorecard, please spread the word by forwarding this to your friends and family. And be sure to stay on top of our work by following LCV on Facebook and Twitter.
Thank you for your generous support of LCV.

Dismantling the EPA from LVC 15FEB11

PLEASE sign the League of Conservation's petition telling majority leader John Boehner to keep his dirty hands off the EPA! Click the header or links to sign, and please forward to family and friends....
Don't let Dirty Energy's allies in Congress dismantle the EPA.

Clicking here will automatically add your name to this petition to Speaker Boehner:
"Keep your dirty hands off the Environmental Protection Agency."
By taking this action, you are affirm-ing your membership in LCV and will receive regular LCV communications and are entitled to vote for a member of LCV's Board of Directors.
Last week, speaking at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, D.C., former House Speaker Newt Gingrich called for completely abolishing the Environmental Protection Agency.
This week, Republican leaders in the House have taken a big step toward making the Gingrich plan to eliminate the EPA a reality by slashing funding for environmental and public health safeguards in their proposed funding measure.
We cannot allow Dirty Coal and Big Oil – and their allies in Congress – to dismantle the EPA.
The Republican leadership in the House is calling for a 30 percent cut to the EPA’s budget – the largest cut in 30 years. Such draconian cuts would jeopardize the water we drink and air we breathe, endangering the health and well-being of all Americans.
In addition to these draconian cuts, the House proposed funding measure also includes sneak attacks on our bedrock environmental laws. It would prevent the EPA from closing loopholes in the Clean Water Act that would jeopardize the drinking water for 117 million Americans. Additionally, the plan would prevent the EPA from enforcing commonsense safeguards in the Clean Air Act that curb harmful carbon pollution and hold corporate polluters accountable.
These additional provisions have nothing to do with funding the government or creating jobs, but are part of a long sought agenda by the nation's biggest polluters. But should we really be surprised? Speaker Boehner has received more than $1 million in campaign cash from Dirty Coal, Big Oil and other energy interests during his career in Congress.
Dirty energy’s allies are trying to dismantle the EPA – we cannot let these attacks go unanswered. Help us demonstrate the depth and breadth of public support for defending the EPA’s ability to protect the air we breathe, the water we drink and lands we enjoy. Our goal is 24,000 petition signers in 24 hours. Click here to automatically add your name to the petition.

URGENT UPDATE: FOX News Lies from LEAGUE OF CONSERVATION VOTERS 16DEZ10

FOX "NEWS" LIES???? WOW, what a big surprise!!!!
We knew Fox News had some dirty tricks up its sleeve, but this newest information is really low.
Earlier this week, our friends at Media Matters for America reported that the managing editor of FOX News’ Washington, D.C., office sent an email last December -- during the Copenhagen climate talks -- instructing FOX reporters to “refrain from asserting that the planet has warmed (or cooled) in any given period without IMMEDIATELY pointing out that such theories are based on data that critics have called into question.”
For months, right-wing mouthpieces like Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, and Sarah Palin have tried to erode public support for sound clean energy and climate policies by spreading false and misleading information about climate science. Now we have solid evidence that FOX News orchestrated and supported these efforts to confuse and mislead Americans about the devastating effects of climate change.
We need to aggressively counter the right-wing propaganda machine by first exposing their lies and then sharing the real facts about climate change with our family and friends. You can help by “Liking” our Facebook page and sharing it with all of your friends!
We’ve had enough! LCV is taking on FOX News and any other media companies that parrot Big Oil’s talking points and fail to honestly report on the threat posed by the climate crisis. Look for updates on our campaign on Facebook!
Thank you for all that you do for the environment.

Ask President Obama to protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge as a National Monument!
Next Monday, December 6th, marks the 50th anniversary of the creation of the iconic Arctic National Wildlife Refuge -- 19 million acres of pristine wilderness and wildlife habitat located along the North Slope of Alaska.
In 1960, President Eisenhower was so enamored with the beauty and ecological diversity of the region that he decided to establish the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge as one of America’s greatest wilderness regions. He was convinced of the need to create a refuge to be protected and enjoyed by future generations of Americans.  Today, the Arctic Refuge is the largest wildlife refuge in the United States – home to millions of critical wildlife, including the Porcupine Caribou, hundreds of bird species, and thousands of brown and black bears.  They go there each year seeking sanctuary from a world of increasing hazards to receive their most vital needs: sustenance and security for bearing their young.  This cycle has been unbroken for fifty years, and now is the time to ensure that this wildlife is protected for future generations.
President Obama has the power to provide additional safeguards to protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge -- and its millions of vital wildlife -- from exploitation. The creation of a National Monument is the quickest way to protect this national treasure from drilling and other threats.  As the Refuge celebrates its 50th anniversary, a National Monument designation would be a fitting celebration of the past, present, and future of this extraordinary American wilderness.
Thank you for taking the time to contact the President and make your voice heard. And thank you – as always – for standing with LCV.

LEAGUE OF CONSERVATION VOTERS NAMES PAT TOOMEY TO DIRTY DOZEN 23AUG10 & Wind turbine maker plants firm foot in state 7JUN09

I am from Pennsylvania, born and raised there, about 80 miles East of Lake Erie and I still think of Scandia, PA as home. We don't need off-shore drilling in Lake Erie or any of the Great Lakes. What we do need is more development of renewable, clean energy resources like the wind turbines South of Altoona, PA (visible from I 99) and more related production facilities like the wind turbine blade factories in Ebensburg and Fairless Hills, PA. Pat Toomey has received over $120,000 from big oil, and he will represent their greed if elected to the U.S. Senate. Check out this from the League of Conservation Voters and then the article from The Tribune Review (Pittsburgh).

WATCH LCV’s New Online Video
LCV just named Pennsylvania Senate Candidate Pat Toomey to the Dirty Dozen.
Today the League of Conservation Voters is naming former Club for Growth President and Pennsylvania Senate candidate Pat Toomey to the Dirty Dozen – and in doing so we’re launching a new web ad highlighting his support of oil drilling in the Great Lakes.
Watch Our Ad Here >>
In 2001, Toomey voted to allow drilling for oil and natural gas in the Great Lakes. But that’s not all -- just this past June – despite the unfolding catastrophe in the Gulf of Mexico -- he reiterated his support for drilling in Lake Erie. And his zeal for drilling doesn’t just stop at the Great Lakes, he also supports drilling in protected areas like the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
Toomey has parroted Big Oil’s misinformation and lies about climate legislation and other clean energy policies for years. From his time in Congress to his stint running the ultra-conservative Club for Growth, Toomey has consistently sided with Big Oil and other dirty polluters. In fact, over his career, Toomey has received more than $294,000 from energy interests, including $123,800 from the Oil and Gas industry. His lifetime LCV score is an abysmal 11 percent.
Make no mistake: If Toomey wins in November, he will do Big Oil’s bidding in the Senate and he’ll lead the charge against sound environmental policies and EPA’s ability to reduce global warming pollution from the nation’s biggest emitters.
We need more pro-environment allies in the Senate next year, not rubber stamps for corporate polluters. If we ever want to get anything done to help our planet in 2011 and beyond, we can’t let them win in November.
That’s why this election is so important. Rep. Joe Sestak, who is running against Toomey for Pennsylvania Senate, is an environmental champion who voted for the American Clean Energy and Security Act last year – a bill that would have helped to build an American clean energy economy, reduce harmful carbon pollution and curb our dangerous dependence on oil. During his two terms in Congress, Sestak has earned an outstanding 96% on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard.
We need more friends like Rep. Joe Sestak in the Senate, not more of Big Oil’s cronies. So please, take a moment to watch LCV’s video and then share the video with three friends who vote in Pennsylvania.
Thank you for all you do to protect the planet.

About the writer
Rick Stouffer is a Pittsburgh Tribune-Review staff writer and can be reached at 412-320-7853 or via e-mail.

EBENSBURG -- Larry Stupi worked as a banker for 32 years, holding a number of positions, the last one as a commercial lending officer.
Three years ago, the Johnstown, Cambria County, resident, looking for a new challenge, went from making loans to making windmill blades.
"My boss gives me what I need to do for the day, then lets me do it," said Stupi, 56. "It's less money than I was making, but also a lot less pressure -- it's super."
Stupi is one of 300 employees at a windmill blade factory operated in Ebensburg by Spain's Gamesa SA, one of the world's five largest windmill turbine makers. Its primary competitors include GE Energy, Denmark's Vestas, Germany's Siemens and India's Suzlon.
Three years ago, Gamesa opened this 142,000-square-foot plant in Cambria County as part of its entry to both Pennsylvania and the United States.
The move gave the company a leg up on competitors in a wind-energy market that experts predicted a decade ago would take off.
President Obama's backing for alternative energy projects and billions of dollars of incentives in a stimulus package passed by Congress has positioned Gamesa and others to capitalize on expanding demand for electricity generated by the wind.
The Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources is considering legislation that would require the country to generate 11 to 15 percent of its power from renewable resources, including wind and solar, by 2021. The House is weighing similar legislation. And Obama has called for an even more ambitious goal: 25 percent by 2025. A federal standard, combined with grants and tax credits in the government stimulus package, could help draw billions of dollars in investments and spur plans for new wind farms nationwide.
"Wind companies see a strong market for renewable energy in the U.S., and we agree," said Robert LaCount, head of the Climate Change and Clean Energy Group for IHS CERA, Washington.
"Of the 14 original equipment manufacturers in the North American market today, nearly everyone followed Gamesa," said Matt Kaplan, senior analyst in Emerging Energy Research's North America Wind Energy Group, in Cambridge, Mass. "Gamesa was ahead of the curve."
"It was a smart move on Gamesa's part to come to the U.S., replicating what it learned to do well in Europe, and they are in a very good position," said Gerry Susman, director of Penn State University's Center for the Management of Technological and Organizational Change.
Gamesa's Ebensburg plant is expanding to handle larger blades as the wind-energy industry moves toward larger, more powerful windmills.
It is consolidating all blade work from another blade-making plant in Fairless Hills, Bucks County. That plant will concentrate on making nacelles, which house the turbines turned by the wind-driven giant blades to generate electricity. Gamesa's North American headquarters and a sales office are in Philadelphia.
Ebensburg Plant Manager Antonio Morente Manero projects his workers this year will produce about 400 blades, down from more than 500 in 2008, because of the production changes.
Last year was the best year ever for the wind industry in America.
More than 8,500 megawatts of wind power were brought online, increasing the nation's total wind-generating capacity to 25,300 megawatts, overtaking Germany for the top position worldwide. That's enough electricity to handle the needs of nearly seven million households. Even so, that's still a tiny part of the energy grid -- just over 1 percent of the U.S. electricity supply.
An estimated $17 billion was invested in wind power in 2008 alone, with IHS CERA projecting 2009 projects will add another 5,000 megawatts to 8,500 megawatts to the wind power capacity total.
Michael Peck, Gamesa's director of media, institutional and labor relations, said a company task force looked initially at 27 states, and in 2004 selected Pennsylvania for its operations.
"We received bipartisan support to come to Pennsylvania, and the state had just passed a standard calling for 18 percent of the state's energy to come from renewables by 2020," he said.
The state provided Gamesa with $20 million in grants and loans to build its manufacturing plants in Ebensburg and in Fairless Hills outside Philadelphia. The Ebensburg plant is tax-exempt until 2011, the Fairless Hills facility pays no state and local taxes through 2019.
Gamesa was attracted by Western Pennsylvania's fabled work force. "Workers in Ebensburg, an extension of the Pittsburgh area, have manufacturing in their blood," Peck said.
"It's been a very positive experience having Gamesa here," said P.J. Stevens, president of the Cambria County commissioners. "It brought family-sustaining jobs here, which helps grow our tax base. That's the kind of job creation we want."
Wages at the Gamesa plant, excluding benefits, range between $12.73 and $18.39 an hour.
"The biggest thing for us having Gamesa is that it establishes us in the renewables community," said Linda Thomson, president of Johnstown Area Regional Industries, a nonprofit economic development agency that promotes Cambria and Somerset counties.
Standing on the Ebensburg plant's roof, 100 of the 150-foot, six-ton blades lie end-to-end, looking like wind-made ridges in white sand. Each blade, three blades per windmill, takes 22 hours to manufacture, said manufacturing manager Joe Satkovich.
Satkovich is another worker who found a home with Gamesa. A 32-year veteran with Vanity Fair Intimates, he lost his job as operations superintendent when the company decided to close its Richland, Cambria County, factory and move operations to Alabama.
Satkovich joined Gamesa in August 2005, spent 4 1/2 months in Spain learning the Gamesa way, then returned to Ebensburg to direct operations on the shop floor.
"We make two blades a day, and can work on 10 blades at one time, on three shifts," Satkovich said. The blades are made of fiberglass impregnated with resins, plus carbon fiber that adds strength without weight.
Blades have to be nearly perfect when they leave the Gamesa factory. Ultrasound equipment is used to ensure each blade is solid throughout, and the three blades that are mounted on top of a windmill tower have to weigh within 11 pounds of each other to prevent wobbling, improper wear and expensive fixes.
Ongoing retooling at the Ebensburg plant is expected to be completed by year's end.
"We have to prepare for the future in the wind industry, and we're getting ready for new products in the Gamesa portfolio," Manero said.
