Dear Legislator,
I have a simple question for you: Will you protect our planet for future generations by working to curb man-made global warming now?
As your constituent, I expect you to make addressing climate change a top priority.
I expect you to oppose the keystone xl pipeline and to support ending tax breaks and subsidies for the coal, oil and gas industries and to redirect federal money these industries would receive to renewable energy and conservation projects.
I expect you to pass national regulations on fracking and to end fracking on public lands.
I expect you to adequately fund the EPA and to oppose all attempts to weaken our environmental laws and to make sure the laws we have in place are enforced
THIS FROM THE LVC
This week, we’re launching a massive campaign to make climate change a top issue for every member of Congress. A campaign to show Washington that our movement has the power to make it politically toxic for legislators who reject climate science -- and that we’ll back those who stand up for climate action.
To kick it off, we’re partnering with our allies to launch a Day of Action on Climate Change tomorrow. In 15 cities across the country, hundreds of LCV members will deliver Climate Change Denier Awards to their members of Congress and hold rallies outside their district offices.
But for LCV supporters like you in Herndon, we have a different request:
To target the right people in the months ahead, we need to know where every member of Congress stands on climate change. And the best way to find out if someone’s an anti-science crusader or an environmental ally worth supporting, is if thousands of their constituents -- like you -- ask them.
Of course, there are some Big Oil-backed politicians who we already know are climate change deniers.
Take Colorado’s Representative Mike Coffman, who says that “climate change is naturally occurring” and humans’ influence on global warming is “subject to debate.” Or Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson who has no shame in announcing, “I absolutely do not believe in the science of man-caused climate change... it’s not proven by any stretch of the imagination.”
For folks like you and me, who want to protect future generations from the effects of climate change, it would be a huge embarrassment to say any of those statements publicly. But these climate change deniers don’t even blink an eye when sharing their ignorant views with the public. That has to change.
So, we’ll be launching TV ads, protests, emails, and phone calls in the weeks ahead to call out these Big Oil lackeys and show them that they are out of touch with the needs of their constituents.
But there are so many members of Congress who we don’t have on the record either way. That’s why we need you to get the conversation going today. By sending a message, you’ll not only help us gather valuable information, but you’ll be showing your member of Congress that climate change is the top issue for you as a constituent and it should be for them too.
As families across America suffer from increasingly intense wildfires, floods, heat, and storms, it’s just plain unacceptable for anyone to be opposing action to fight the climate change that is fueling this extreme weather.
With your help, we can let every member of Congress know that there will be consequences if they don’t make climate action a priority. But the first step is reaching out to them with a simple question, so thanks for sending your message today.
Best,
Vanessa Kritzer Online Campaigns Manager League of Conservation Voters
P.S. If you already know where your member of Congress stands on climate change, it’s still worth writing to your members of Congress to show that you expect climate change to be a top priority. Send them a message here >>
