Here’s how: The White House is trying to order a new census that the ACLU says would “defy the Constitution.”1 Trump says he wants to make the unprecedented move to exclude non-citizens from the count, which he claims will be “highly accurate.”2,3 Trump is pressuring states to gerrymander away Democratic-leaning U.S. House seats. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, who has threatened protesting state Democratic lawmakers with arrest, says he won’t stop until the GOP’s unconstitutional gerrymandering plan becomes law.4 The GOP’s SAVE Act is also pending a vote in the Senate. It would be one of the most dangerous federal voter suppression laws in modern times, potentially disenfranchising millions of people. The bill would require people to prove that they’re citizens in order to vote by providing a birth certificate, passport, or naturalization papers. 21 million eligible voters don’t have these documents readily available.5 The stakes are clear: Trump and his allies want to lock themselves into power by rigging the system, suppressing votes, and silencing millions of Americans.
