But a rash of scandals related to Twitter has put a new mark on the face of the London Games. The stories range from a journalist's suspended account to a tweeting teen who has been arrested.

Missy Franklin stands on the podium with her gold medal, after winning the 100m backstroke at the London 2012 Olympic Games. Of that moment, she says, "I was trying to sing, but I was like, crying, at the same time."
July 31, 2012 Swimmer Missy Franklin, 17, is being hailed as the next great U.S. swimming star, after winner her first gold medal in the London Olympics. She says that while standing on the podium, she thought about "all the things leading up to that moment. And it was so incredibly worth it."

Venus Williams of the United States returns a shot to Aleksandra Wozniak of Canada in their Olympic singles tennis match, played at Wimbledon. Williams won, 6-1, 6-3.
July 31, 2012 Stories that caught our eye this morning include a ratings coup for NBC, progress for Venus Williams, and a 33-megapixel broadcast of the opening ceremony.

Oscar Pistorius of South Africa runs in the men's 200-meter event at the Paralympic World Cup in May. Some observers have suggested Pistorius receives an unfair advantage from his carbon-fiber "blade" legs.
July 30, 2012 South African Oscar Pistorius will run on artificial legs in the 400-meter Olympic sprint preliminaries in London Saturday. Pistorius is a double amputee who runs world-class times on his carbon-fiber limbs. Some question whether he has an unfair edge — so a lab studied his running motion.

Record setter: U.S. swimmer Missy Franklin celebrates winning the women's 100m backstroke final at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
July 30, 2012 Missy Franklin set a new American record as she won gold in the 100m backstroke. Earlier in the day, Yannick Agnel of France won the 200m men's freestyle, beating a field that included American Ryan Lochte. And U.S. swimmers swept the top two spots in the men's 100m backstroke, with Matthew Grevers winning gold.

In a mostly empty Olympic Stadium, Austin Playfoot lights the Olympic cauldron Monday morning. The cauldron was extinguished Sunday night, so it could be moved to one end of the stadium. Click the enlargement to see a close-up view.
July 30, 2012 Just when the discussion over the London Olympics' opening ceremony was being overshadowed by actual sporting events at the Summer Games, news emerges Monday that the Olympic cauldron was extinguished Sunday night, so that workers could move it to another part of the stadium.

A judo judge waves a blue flag to award victory to South Korea's Cho Jun-Ho Sunday. But moments later, judges raised white flags instead, giving the win to Masashi Ebinuma of Japan.
July 30, 2012 The result of a judo men's quarterfinal bout was announced, and then reversed, Sunday. Since then, it became the source of international indignation over a perceived injustice. But the controversy stems from judo officials' attempt to avoid such confusion.

July 30, 2012 After German Uwe Hohn threw his javelin nearly out of the stadium in 1984, a move that spooked officials with its potential deadliness, the flying spears were changed to fly shorter. But people have been throwing sticks for 400,000 years, and some of these ancient spears might have been able to fly far farther than modern javelins.
