What's A Gold Medal Really Worth?(2)  (0)

Plenty To Smile About: Weightlifter Maiya Maneza of Kazakhstan celebrates on the podium with her new 400-gram gold medal, matching the feat of her compatriot Zulfiya Chinshanlo. The Kazakh Olympians will each receive a $250,000 bonus.
August 1, 2012 Weighing 400 grams, the Olympic gold medals that are being doled out at the London 2012 Summer Games are the heaviest ever, according to reports. But that doesn't mean they're the most valuable: at an estimated $620.82, they're nearly $590 short of the $1,207.86 value held by a gold medal from the Stockholm Games of 1912.

Is What The 'Badminton Eight' Did Really So Bad?(99)  (32)

The Badminton Eight: That's the media's new nickname for the Olympic athletes disqualified Wednesday in a match-fixing scandal at the London Games. They are, from top left: South Korea's Kim Ha Na, Ha Jung-Eun, Kim Min-Jung and Jung Kyung-Eun. Bottom: Indonesia's Greysia Polii and Meiliana Jauhari, and China's Wang Xiaoli and Yu Yang.
August 1, 2012 If the Olympic badminton players could be faulted for anything, it's for not throwing their matches better. Manipulating the draws in tournaments has a long tradition in sport. In the early rounds of track or swimming competitions, athletes who've qualified will routinely not push to win a heat.

BWF Referee Torsten Berg, center, urges Indonesia's Greysia Polii, center, and Meilana Jauhari, bottom right, and South Korea's Ha Jung Eun, back right, to play fairly in their women's doubles badminton match during the London 2012 Olympic Games in London on Tuesday.
July 31, 2012 They're accused of "not using one's best efforts to win a match." The matches drew boos.

Cheerleaders perform during the women's beach volleyball preliminary phase Pool B match on the Centre Court Stadium at Horse Guards Parade in London on Monday.
July 31, 2012 The London Games have conspicuously defied traditional notions by having cheerleaders, in a few different styles, at a few different venues. In basketball, dance teams perform between matches. In beach volleyball, highly choreographed teams delight attendees.

Fed Up (As Usual) With NBC? Check Out The View From London On The BBC(20)  (11)

On its website, NBC reported the U.S. women's gymnastics team's gold medal Tuesday. But if you were watching on American TV, you had to wait until prime time to see the competition.
July 31, 2012 There is one gold medal America wins without fail, every four years. It's for the sport of complaining about NBC's tape-delayed coverage of the Olympic Games. Will Americans ever be happy with an Olympics that's not on American soil?
