SB 715 Firefighters and emergency medical services providers; carrying a concealed handgun

SB 715 is still pending a vote in the Virginia House of Delegates, it was supposed to be voted on  on 27 FEB 18 but just got the 2nd reading and has been passed by for the day ever since. This does not mean this legislation has been defeated, it just means the republican leadership of the House is aware of the public's opposition to to this bill and so will wait to hold a 3rd reading and vote on it right before this session of the Virginia General Assembly is over when the public has probably forgotten about it. We can not allow this to happen. The assembly is in session for 60 days this year (from the 2nd Wednesday of JAN) so that will be until 11 MAR 18. Carrying a concealed handgun; firefighters and emergency medical services providers. Provides that any firefighter or person employed as emergency medical services personnel may carry a concealed handgun while engaged in the performance of his official duties, provided that such firefighter or person employed as emergency medical services personnel has been approved to carry a concealed handgun by his fire chief or emergency medical services chief.  The bill requires the Department of Criminal Justice Services, in consultation with the Office of Emergency Medical Services of the Department of Health and the Department of Fire Programs, to develop a model policy regarding carrying a concealed handgun for firefighters and emergency medical services personnel.

SB 715 Firefighters and emergency medical services providers; carrying a concealed handgun

THIS legislation was introduced in Richmond by Sen amanda f chase rf (republican fascist). This legislation is not needed but the gun lobby is determined to force guns into every aspect of  our lives and this political whore is providing services paid for by the gun lobby. SB715 has been passed by the republican controlled senate and is being voted on in the house today. Dear Del Reid, Sen Black,

I was a  volunteer fireman for 15 years and an EMT in Pennsylvania and New  York State for 10 years. I am totally opposed to this legislation, there is absolutely no reason for firefighters and emergency medical service providers to carry a concealed weapon, I never felt the need for a weapon for all my years of service. This legislation is ill conceived and dangerous for firefighters and emergency medical services providers. I now live in Ashburn, Virginia and have thought about joining the Ashburn Volunteer Fire Dept BUT I will not join if this legislation becomes law and I am sure there are many others who feel the same way. Do not pass this legislation in the Virginia House of Delegates.

Considering your record on gun legislation it will be very ironic, and some may think it self inflicted, if you or someone in your family or someone that you know becomes a victim of gun violence made possible by your voting record. I hope that doesn't happen but if it does be sure to look in a mirror to see who made it possible.

!! Urgent !! The Senate has already passed this bill. And it has passed out of the House Militia, Police and Public Safety Committee this week. Now SB715 will be going to the House floor most likely on Tuesday February 27.

Please call or email your Delegate, especially if your Delegate is a Republican or doesn't have a strong voting record on gun violence prevention. (For example, John Bell has twice voted for this bill already, in subcommittee and committee. If he's your Delegate, please call him and ask him to vote against the bill on the floor.)

SB 715 would allow firefighters and emergency medical services personnel to carry a concealed handgun without a permit, while engaged in the performance of their official duties. 

This can be highly dangerous, especially when firefighters and EMTs enter situations that are already unstable. This blurs the line between providing medical care and assisting police. Right now, firefighters have the utmost trust, and are considered the "good guys" in every situation they enter--but once they are armed, they no longer have that trust. 

Additionally, what are the legal ramifications if a firefighter kills or injures an aggressor, or worse, a patient, a bystander, a fellow responder? Right now, with Trump suggesting arming teachers and school personnel, we really do not need more instances of concealed handguns.

Home Depot customer with a concealed handgun opened fire on shoplifting suspect

Apparently a Michigan woman with a conceal-carry permit and a loaded handgun thought it was her duty to step in and help a Home Depot employee stop a suspected shoplifter. Did she follow their car? Nope. She opened fired on the suspected shoplifter's SUV as they drove out of the parking lot:

A 47- year-old Clarkston woman in the parking lot witnessed one of the store’s loss prevention officers trying to stop a shoplifting suspect getting into a dark colored SUV. The customer — identified as a concealed pistol license holder — reportedly fired shots at the dark-colored SUV as it sped out of the lot. It’s unknown how many rounds were fired from her 9mm handgun, but police believe she hit and flattened one of the vehicle’s rear tires as it sped off in the direction of Brown Road.
It was not known if anyone was injured in the incident. The customer remained on the scene and was cooperating with police. A report is to be turned over to the county prosecutor for review of possible charges, if any, on the woman.

Possible charges? I'd say so. An conceal-carry permit does not make one deputized. Even if she were deputized, shoplifting does not warrant a death penalty. Not to mention the fact that other customers and innocent people merely passing by could've been injured or killed with her reckless behavior.

As KS allows Concealed Carry into capital building, House Speaker worries about... teachers? 19JUN14

I'VE said it a few times on my blog, I am glad I don't live in Kansas. I will give credit to their state legislators, they have leveled the playing field and are allowing concealed carry permit holders to bring their guns into the state capital building, so they are exposed to the same level of risk as they have legislated for the rest of Kansas. KS gop/tea-bagger house speaker ray merrick's fear of teachers is revealing on it's own. Thank you God that I don't live in Kansas!!!!!

In one of those moves that just says Kansas for you, the state house today announced that they are moving forward with allowing concealed carry holders to bring concealed carry to the state house.

Topeka — Legislative leaders on Thursday tacitly agreed to allow people with permits to carry concealed handguns into the Statehouse. The Legislative Coordinating Council — a group of Republican and Democratic leaders from both chambers — met Thursday and, by not taking action to prohibit concealed weapons in the building, according to a law passed in 2013, the group effectively agreed to allow them.
"Those who carry concealed, they feel like that's an enhanced measure for the safety of everyone, and we agree with that," said Senate President Susan Wagle, R-Wichita. "There will be no one in the Capitol who doesn't have a license to carry. A license to carry requires a background check and education."

Republican House Speaker Ray Merrick said he didn't think allowing some people to carry concealed weapons in the Statehouse should make other visitors uncomfortable.

"I'm uncomfortable with people being here for other reasons," he said. "There are a lot of red shirts around here." Kansas National Education Association members wore red T-shirts and crowded the halls of the Statehouse during the final days of the 2014 session, demonstrating against a bill that passed, stripping them of tenure rights.

Huh.
I didn't think these guys were all that scary.
But, to each there own.  I guess if teachers make you that uncomfortable...

Two concealed carry permit holders shoot and kill each other in Michigan 19SEP13

I truly feel sorry for the families of the two men who were killed, but I mean, really, this is what you can expect with our gun culture. This is why I don't do anything when another driver does something stupid to me on the road, I don't want to get shot.  How very sad we have come to this. ....

There's a story out of Michigan where two gun owners got involved in a case of road rage, and ended up shooting and killing each other.

Two drivers are dead after a road rage incident escalated into a shootout. The incident happened around 6:45p.m. Wednesday on M-66 near Steele Street.

Witnesses tell WZZM 13 a one driver was following another driver too closely. The first driver pulled into a car wash parking lot and the other driver followed them into the parking lot.

Witnesses say the driver of the following car fired shots, and the first driver returned fire.  Both drivers were shot and killed. Authorities say both men, ages 43 and 56, had licenses to carry concealed weapons.

Haven't heard of something like this happening before.

8:13 AM PT: There's more information from the Detroit Free Press about the shooting.  It looks like the tailgater was the one with road rage that caused everything.  Looks like the driver in front was protecting his wife and mother who were in the car with him when they were shot at by the tailgater.

10:13 AM PT: OK, more information from MLive.

The mother-in-law of James Pullum, one of two men who died in an apparent road-rage fueled shootout Wednesday, said her daughter and Pullum's mother witnessed the double shooting.

The double shooting happened shortly before 7 p.m. at the Wonder Wand Car Wash at 426 S. Steele St.

Police said the 43-year-old Pullum and the other victim, 56-year-old Robert Taylor, both pulled their vehicles into the car wash after some type of road-rage incident moments earlier.

Both had permits to carry concealed weapons.

After a confrontation between the two men outside of the vehicles, they exchanged shots that ended up being fatal to both men.

All right, it looks like they got out of their cars to argue before they shot each other.  That initial story made it seem like the tailgater had fired upon the family when the driver was still inside the car.

Yeah... if neither one has a gun, it probably ends with a broken nose instead of two funerals.
