Spanberger encourages water conservation during drought, while data centers use millions of gallons a day 25JUN26

GOING into our second year of drought there is no justification for mandated water use restrictions and / or increasing water and sewage fees for Virginia residential customers while Virginia data centers are using on average four ( 4 ) million gallons of water daily. Too much of the additional strain on utilities from data centers has been imposed on Virginia's citizens, who's water and electric bills haven't increased with the increase in data centers in our Commonwealth? Corporations paid for enough votes in our legislature in Richmond, with the blatant support of Gov spangerger ( at what price one wonders ), for the tax break on equipment for data centers to be extended. Since they have this tax break mandate the older data centers should spend the money to switch their cooling systems from fresh drinking water to reclaimed water or pay higher fees for the fresh drinking water they use. Depending on the state of the drought as the year progresses and data center cooling needs some of them may have to shut down some servers ( server brownout ) to reduce the amount of water they use. Remember, Virginia is a Commonwealth NOT a corporatewealth, and we the people have reached our limit on our elected officials kow-towing to bezos, zuckerberg, musk and the rest of their lot. Thankfully spanberger can't run for re-election, but the Virginia Assembly would do well to remember this. From ABC8 WRIC.....

Spanberger encourages water conservation during drought, while data centers use millions of gallons a day

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Most of the Commonwealth is under a drought warning, and Governor Abigail Spanberger has encouraged residents to conserve water where they can. But with Virginia being the data center capital of the world, the amount of water used to keep them running is raising eyebrows.

According to the Sierra Club Virginia Chapter, a Virginia data center uses an average of four million gallons of water a day. The average person uses around 90 gallons a day, so it can be frustrating to hear politicians asking you to cut down on showers or watering the lawn when the data center next door is using much more.

The machines at data centers create a lot of heat and run 24/7 so the water is used to keep equipment cool.

Ron Murchek, an Executive General Adjuster with Sedgwick and data center expert, said companies predominantly use fresh drinking water at their data center, but newer ones are starting to use what’s called reclaimed water.

“Maybe water that they have captured in nearby ponds, rainwater they’ve captured from their own property, their roofs,” Murchek said. “They’re really using a lot of reclaimed water for sewage treatment plants.”

The hope is this water can be used up to five times before it evaporates.

But the problem is older centers that use fresh drinking water would have to pay an unappealing price to switch to the more environmentally friendly option.

“A lot of that really comes down to just dollars and cents,” he said. “If the building wasn’t constructed to use renewable sources, there’s significant costs involved to move to that type of a repurpose of the water.”

Murchek said it’s time for companies to make it more of a priority.

“There’s a lot of planning that has to change,” he said. “We can no longer just look at the sky for a storm. We really need to look at our resource availability. These data centers need to remain reliable neighbors to everyone in Virginia. Sustainability, disaster recovery must go hand in hand.”

Virginia budget stalled over data center tax exemptions 23&24APR26

$2 billion!?!?!? That is what the Commonwealth of Virginia lost last year because of the sweetheart sales and use tax exemption for data centers ( and so for drumpf's / trump's ass-kissing buddies bezos, musk, zuckerberg, to name a few ). The Virginia Senate wants to end the subsidies for these greedy oligarchs but the Virginia House has declared BOHICA* VIRGINIANS as their battle cry to keep them. E mail and / delegate and  senator  and Gov Spanberger tell them the sales and use tax exemption for data centers must be eliminated now! My e mails will be at the end of this post. This from CBS News 6 Richmond.....

Virginia budget stalled over data center tax exemptions

RICHMOND, Va. — Virginia lawmakers convened in Richmond for a brief special session Thursday as they have failed to reach an agreement on the state's two-year budget, which is due by June 30.

The primary sticking point between the House and Senate is a sales and use tax exemption for data centers. The two chambers passed separate budgets that are more than $1 billion apart.

Lead Senate budget negotiator Sen. Louise Lucas (D-Chesapeake) wants to end the tax exemption, which lawmakers say cost the state nearly $2 billion in tax revenue last year.

Lucas was not available to speak with the media Thursday, but she and others have recently stated they want to ensure data centers pay their fair share of taxes. The exact mechanism for how that would happen has not been made public.

Lead House budget negotiator Del. Luke Torian (D-Prince William) opposes eliminating the exemption for companies already operating in Virginia.

"We have MOUs that we have signed with folks in that industry that I believe the Commonwealth should honor, and that's what we plan to do," Torian said.

Torian said while the two sides have been talking, an official meeting between them has not happened for a little while now.

"We're not in a position to present anything to the General Assembly relative to a budget, because we are waiting those conversations," Torian said.

Despite the delay, Torian remains optimistic about reaching an agreement.

"I feel very confident that we will have a budget prior to that deadline," Torian said.

Torian added that data center companies will need to engage directly with the Senate regarding the proposed changes.

"I think that the data center industry will have to have that conversation with the Senate, Senate leadership relative to how they work out that mechanism on how they provide the resources that have been requested by the Senate," Torian said.

Sen. Scott Surovell believes the state's decision will have broader implications.

"I think Virginia has a chance here to sort of start the national and set the national discussion about what the proper policy is for data center sales tax exemptions, because it's going to be having a big impact across the entire country," Surovell said.

The Data Center Coalition released the following statement after Thursday's special session ended:

“The data center industry remains open to working with Governor Spanberger and members of the House and Senate on an approach that advances their respective goals, keeps Virginia competitive for investment, and allows the Commonwealth to honor the commitments that produced $80 billion of investment and $5 billion in tax revenue in just the last two years. The industry offered legislative leaders two proposals that would help achieve this, the most recent of which would provide $1.1 billion of new state revenue over the biennium and hundreds of millions in recurring revenue in the out years. These proposals were rejected. The industry has yet to receive any substantive feedback or details about what a resolution might include," said DCC President Josh Levi.

House Republicans, who are in the minority, also oppose getting rid of the exemption. They emphasize that a deal is needed soon so localities know what to expect from the state.

"School boards, counties, hey, when can we start doing our budget? Because they've got budgetary constraints of June the 30th," Del. Terry Kilgore (R-Scott) said.

Another wrinkle in the negotiations is that lawmakers need to see what Gov. Spanberger does with legislation sent to her on Wednesday, including the creation of a retail marijuana market.

If she vetoes the legislation, lawmakers can no longer plan on having that revenue for the budget.

Utility bills have already increased for regular Virginians because of these data centers, they do not contribute enough to the Commonwealth's economy to justify continuing these exemptions. End the exemptions NOW!

SB 715 Firefighters and emergency medical services providers; carrying a concealed handgun

SB 715 is still pending a vote in the Virginia House of Delegates, it was supposed to be voted on  on 27 FEB 18 but just got the 2nd reading and has been passed by for the day ever since. This does not mean this legislation has been defeated, it just means the republican leadership of the House is aware of the public's opposition to to this bill and so will wait to hold a 3rd reading and vote on it right before this session of the Virginia General Assembly is over when the public has probably forgotten about it. We can not allow this to happen. The assembly is in session for 60 days this year (from the 2nd Wednesday of JAN) so that will be until 11 MAR 18. If you haven't told your delegate and senator to vote against SB 715 there is still time, click here for contact details. By the by, I did e mail my delegate and senator and Sen amanda chase rf, only Del David Reid D responded, he will vote against SB 715.

SB 715 Firefighters and emergency medical services providers; carrying a concealed handgun

THIS legislation was introduced in Richmond by Sen amanda f chase rf (republican fascist). This legislation is not needed but the gun lobby is determined to force guns into every aspect of  our lives and this political whore is providing services paid for by the gun lobby. SB715 has been passed by the republican controlled senate and is being voted on in the house today. Please e mail or call your delegate and ask them to vote against SB715, click here to find your delegates contact information. Here is my letter to to my delegate and senator
Dear Del Reid, Sen Black,
I was a  volunteer fireman for 15 years and an EMT in Pennsylvania and New  York State for 10 years. I am totally opposed to this legislation, there is absolutely no reason for firefighters and emergency medical service providers to carry a concealed weapon, I never felt the need for a weapon for all my years of service. This legislation is ill conceived and dangerous for firefighters and emergency medical services providers. I now live in Ashburn, Virginia and have thought about joining the Ashburn Volunteer Fire Dept BUT I will not join if this legislation becomes law and I am sure there are many others who feel the same way. Do not pass this legislation in the Virginia House of Delegates.
Sincerely,
Craig Schwanke
I also e mailed Sen chase
Considering your record on gun legislation it will be very ironic, and some may think it self inflicted, if you or someone in your family or someone that you know becomes a victim of gun violence made possible by your voting record. I hope that doesn't happen but if it does be sure to look in a mirror to see who made it possible.

Action
!! Urgent !! The Senate has already passed this bill. And it has passed out of the House Militia, Police and Public Safety Committee this week. Now SB715 will be going to the House floor most likely on Tuesday February 27.

Please call or email your Delegate, especially if your Delegate is a Republican or doesn't have a strong voting record on gun violence prevention. (For example, John Bell has twice voted for this bill already, in subcommittee and committee. If he's your Delegate, please call him and ask him to vote against the bill on the floor.)
Comments
SB 715 would allow firefighters and emergency medical services personnel to carry a concealed handgun without a permit, while engaged in the performance of their official duties.

This can be highly dangerous, especially when firefighters and EMTs enter situations that are already unstable. This blurs the line between providing medical care and assisting police. Right now, firefighters have the utmost trust, and are considered the "good guys" in every situation they enter--but once they are armed, they no longer have that trust.

Additionally, what are the legal ramifications if a firefighter kills or injures an aggressor, or worse, a patient, a bystander, a fellow responder? Right now, with Trump suggesting arming teachers and school personnel, we really do not need more instances of concealed handguns.
