Spanberger encourages water conservation during drought, while data centers use millions of gallons a day 25JUN26

GOING into our second year of drought there is no justification for mandated water use restrictions and / or increasing water and sewage fees for Virginia residential customers while Virginia data centers are using on average four ( 4 ) million gallons of water daily. Too much of the additional strain on utilities from data centers has been imposed on Virginia's citizens, who's water and electric bills haven't increased with the increase in data centers in our Commonwealth? Corporations paid for enough votes in our legislature in Richmond, with the blatant support of Gov spangerger ( at what price one wonders ), for the tax break on equipment for data centers to be extended. Since they have this tax break mandate the older data centers should spend the money to switch their cooling systems from fresh drinking water to reclaimed water or pay higher fees for the fresh drinking water they use. Depending on the state of the drought as the year progresses and data center cooling needs some of them may have to shut down some servers ( server brownout ) to reduce the amount of water they use. Remember, Virginia is a Commonwealth NOT a corporatewealth, and we the people have reached our limit on our elected officials kow-towing to bezos, zuckerberg, musk and the rest of their lot. Thankfully spanberger can't run for re-election, but the Virginia Assembly would do well to remember this. From ABC8 WRIC.....

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Most of the Commonwealth is under a drought warning, and Governor Abigail Spanberger has encouraged residents to conserve water where they can. But with Virginia being the data center capital of the world, the amount of water used to keep them running is raising eyebrows.

According to the Sierra Club Virginia Chapter, a Virginia data center uses an average of four million gallons of water a day. The average person uses around 90 gallons a day, so it can be frustrating to hear politicians asking you to cut down on showers or watering the lawn when the data center next door is using much more.

The machines at data centers create a lot of heat and run 24/7 so the water is used to keep equipment cool.

Ron Murchek, an Executive General Adjuster with Sedgwick and data center expert, said companies predominantly use fresh drinking water at their data center, but newer ones are starting to use what’s called reclaimed water.

“Maybe water that they have captured in nearby ponds, rainwater they’ve captured from their own property, their roofs,” Murchek said. “They’re really using a lot of reclaimed water for sewage treatment plants.”

The hope is this water can be used up to five times before it evaporates.

But the problem is older centers that use fresh drinking water would have to pay an unappealing price to switch to the more environmentally friendly option.

“A lot of that really comes down to just dollars and cents,” he said. “If the building wasn’t constructed to use renewable sources, there’s significant costs involved to move to that type of a repurpose of the water.”

Murchek said it’s time for companies to make it more of a priority.

“There’s a lot of planning that has to change,” he said. “We can no longer just look at the sky for a storm. We really need to look at our resource availability. These data centers need to remain reliable neighbors to everyone in Virginia. Sustainability, disaster recovery must go hand in hand.”

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett loses reelection!!!!!!!! 4NOV14

WAY COOL PENNSYLVANIA!!!!! BYE BYE tommy corbet, good riddance to you! You have been nothing but bad for our Commonwealth and we are glad to see you and your tea-bagger politics go!

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett loses reelection

November 4 at 8:16 PM

Former Pennsylvania revenue secretary Tom Wolf (D) defeated embattled first-term Gov. Tom Corbett (R) on Tuesday, winning by wide margins across a state beset by budget deficits.
Exit polls showed Wolf running ahead of Corbett by wide margins among all age groups except those over 65, who split evenly between the two candidates. Wolf won every region of the state except the deeply conservative central counties.
Corbett’s loss is historic: Since Pennsylvania began allowing governors to seek two consecutive terms in 1970, every governor has won reelection. Corbett will be the first governor to serve only one term.
Corbett, the former state attorney general, won election over Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato (D) in 2010 by a nine-point margin. But his term got off to a rocky start almost from the beginning after revelations about Corbett’s investigation into former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky.
At a time when most states are generating big surpluses, Pennsylvania was running a deficit of about $1 billion. Corbett’s approval rating plummeted early in his tenure and never recovered.
Polls showed Wolf leading by double digits throughout the race.

Pennsylvania Makes Public 243 Cases of Fracking Contaminated Water 29AUG14

FRACKING is polluting the ground water in Pennsylvania and around the nation, here are 243 cases proving this fact. Gov corbett r tb PA and the repiglican / tea-bagger controlled commonwealth government in Harrisburg have been corrupted by the gas and oil industries, failing to investigate and even covering up water contamination and health problems to protect these industries. There is help from scientific and environmental organizations for communities fighting to protect their residents and water supplies and the residents of Pennsylvania can also fight back by voting for candidates who will best protect their health and environment this November. From +Daily Kos .....

The state of Pennsylvania has released redacted details of 243 cases of water contamination caused by fracking and related activities by the natural gas industry. Claims made by the fracking industry that they have not contaminated water are utter rubbish. These 243 cases which took place in Pennsylvania between 2008 and 2014 involve a wide range of contamination problems including the contamination of multiple water supply wells by one fracking operation.  State officials did not indicate how many more cases of contamination may have occurred since 2008 that are not included in this list.
The 243 cases, from 2008 to 2014, include some where a single drilling operation impacted multiple water wells. The problems listed in the documents include methane gas contamination, spills of wastewater and other pollutants, and wells that went dry or were otherwise undrinkable. Some of the problems were temporary, but the names of landowners were redacted, so it wasn't clear if the problems were resolved to their satisfaction. Other complaints are still being investigated
Here is an example case I went to semi-randomly.
It is clear that fracking has been causing wide ranging water problems but the industry has pressed hard to keep them from being made public. Pennsylvania's inspector general has admitted the problems with fracking have overwhelmed state regulators.

The release of contamination information also comes about a month after a report from the state’s Inspector General that found that the rapid growth of the state’s gas industry “caught the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) unprepared to effectively administer laws and regulations to protect drinking water and unable to efficiently respond to citizen complaints.”
They repeatedly lied to us in North Carolina in public meetings which I attended that there were no documented cases of fracking contamination of water supplies.  North Carolina Republicans were given dog and poly show tours of Pennsylvania gas wells. They came back with glowing reports selling fracking to North Carolinians.
State Sen. Bob Rucho returned from a taxpayer-funded trip to Pennsylvania's shale gas drilling region talking about green pastures and cows - not drinking water contamination or health concerns.
"I was impressed with the best industry practices they've established," he said, dismissing complaints about shale gas extraction as erroneous or exaggerated. "What we saw was green grass and cows grazing."

The fracking industry was lying to North Carolina's state representatives and citizens.
Those lies have now been exposed.
A permanent moratorium on expanding fracking to new areas needs to be declared now to stop more water from being contaminated and to remedy deficiencies in regulation that are alllowing water to be contaminated in violation of federal water quality laws.

The following list identifies cases where DEP determined that a private water supply was impacted by oil and
gas activities. The oil and gas activities referenced in the list below include operations associated with both
conventional and unconventional drilling activities that either resulted in a water diminution event or an
increase in constituents above background conditions. This list is intended to identify historic water supply
impacts and does not necessarily represent ongoing impacts. Many of the water supply complaints listed
below have either returned to background conditions, have been mitigated through the installation of water
treatment controls or have been addressed through the replacement of the original water supply. This list is
dynamic in nature and will be updated to reflect new water supply impacts as they are reported to DEP and a
determination is made; however, the list will retain cases of water supply impacts even after the impact has
been resolved.
A redacted copy of the water supply determination letter/order can be viewed by clicking on the “Complaint
#” or “ORDER” cell in the table. Each row on the list represents a single water supply determination. A single
water supply determination may be represented by multiple “Complaint #s” (i.e., when more than one
Complaint # is included in the same row) and, conversely, separate water supplies may be identified using
the same “Complaint #” (i.e., when multiple rows list the same Complaint #). The list also identifies the
municipality and county where each water supply is located along with the date of the water supply
determination letter or the date the order was issued.

THE GREAT ENEMY OF FREEDOM IS.....

HERE are some words of wisdom that can be applied to the 2012 election, the citizens united decision, and the republican / tea-bagger ticket of mitt robme and lyin' paul ryan.....
"The great enemy of freedom is the alignment of political power with wealth. This alignment destroys the commonwealth - that is, the natural wealth of localities and the local economies of household, neighborhood, and community - and so destroys democracy, of which the commonwealth is the foundation and practical means.”
- Wendell Berry
