Virginia enacts social media time limits for minors starting Jan. 1, 2026 & Media Guidelines 26DEZ25 & 7JUL18

THIS may be a surprise to my family and friends who know my liberal beliefs, attitudes and actions but I am a supporter of the Commonwealth's new law on social media and minors. These controls are not the same as book banning in our schools, something I am generally opposed to. The social media time limits for minors lessens the chances of minors being exposed to porn or racism or violence. This law lowers the risk of minors being manipulated and then being sexually assaulted and abused, or manipulated and then committing suicide, or manipulated and then committing acts of violence. And the law allows for parents to adjust the time limits for their children to lower time limits or no time limits. ( Though the material from US Davis may be a little old it applies to today just as it did in 2018 ) These from WSET ABC13 News and UC Davis Health / Children's Hospital

Virginia is set to implement a new law next week that will impose strict time limits on social media usage for minors.

Starting Jan. 1, social media platforms will be required to restrict users under the age of 16 to just one hour per day on their apps.

Del. Wendell Walker, R-52nd District, compared social media addiction to drug addiction, saying, "When we get hooked on social media, it's almost like a drug addiction, you just have to have more."

The law allows parents to adjust these time limits, either increasing or decreasing them as they see fit.

Del. Sam Rasoul, D-38th District, emphasized the bipartisan concern over children's mental health, stating, "From a bipartisan perspective, people are concerned about the addiction of screen time. Social media companies are trying to entice us through these algorithms and keep us more and more addicted to these social media platforms."

The legislation, which passed with support from both parties in the House and Senate, also mandates that companies use reasonable methods to verify a user's age.

Del. Walker noted that it is the responsibility of the attorney general's office to ensure compliance with the new rules, saying, "You have to work for the safety and the health of the human beings out here and for young people."

The new law applies only to minors, with no changes to adult access.

Attempts to reach social media companies X, Meta, Snapchat and TikTok for comment or an interview have been unsuccessful.

13 Virginia sheriff’s offices sign agreements with ICE to help enforce immigration 10JUN25

THAT so many of these sheriff's offices have signed agreements with ice to help enforce immigration in the "task force model" is disturbing because it is doubtful many, if any of these sheriff's deputies have received any training at all on how to identify an "alien" while performing routine police work. Their decisions, based on stereotyping and their own prejudices and lack of knowledge, will not doubt result in violations of civil liberties and human rights, and possibly lawsuits against the sheriff's office that may end up costing their jurisdiction financially. Unfortunately it is also possible some of these ice assisting actions may end up with physical injury or death, the more the drumpf / trump-vance cabal ramps up the tension about immigrants and deportations the greater the chances of violence. 13 Virginia sheriff’s offices sign agreements with ICE to help enforce immigration

BUCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Thirteen sheriff’s offices throughout Virginia have signed agreements with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to help enforce immigration law.

The agreements were made through ICE’s 287(g) program, which, according to the agency, allows local law enforcement agencies to:

“Identify and process removable aliens with pending or active criminal charges,”
“Enforce limited immigration authorities with ICE oversight during routine duties” and
“Serve and execute administrative warrants on removable aliens in your jail.”

The program has the following three models:

The jail enforcement model, which allows officers to identify and process “removable aliens” currently in jail or a detention facility who have pending or active criminal charges while they’re in custody.
The task force model, which allows officers to enforce limited immigration authority while performing routine police duties, like identifying “an alien” at a DUI checkpoint and sharing information directly with ICE. An ICE supervisor determines the next steps.
Under the warrant service officer program, ICE trains, certifies and authorizes officers to serve and carry out administrative warrants on “aliens” currently in an agency’s custody.

As of 4 p.m. on Monday, June 9, the local law enforcement agencies in Central Virginia that had signed the agreement included both the Buckingham County and Mecklenburg County sheriff’s offices. The Buckingham County Sheriff’s Office reportedly signed the agreement on May 15, and the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office signed it on May 13.

State agencies that had signed the agreement as of 4 p.m. on Monday, June 9, included the Virginia Department of Corrections and Virginia State Police.

Other local law enforcement throughout Virginia that had signed as of June 9 included the following:

Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office, (warrant service officer) signed on June 3
Appomattox County Sheriff’s Office, (task force model) signed on May 13
Bedford County Sheriff’s Office, (task force model) signed on March 7
Campbell County Sheriff’s Office, (task force model) signed on May 8
Craig County Sheriff’s Office, (task force model) signed on May 16
Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, (task force model) signed on April 23
Grayson County Sheriff’s Office, (task force model) signed on May 8
Greene County Sheriff’s Office, (task force model) signed on May 8
Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, (warrant service officer) signed on March 27
Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office, (task force model) signed on April 14
Smyth County Sheriff’s Office, (task force model) signed on April 14
Southwest Virginia Regional Jail Authority, (warrant service officer) signed on May 8

In addition, the following law enforcement agencies had pending agreements as of June 9:

Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office (task force model)
Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office (jail enforcement model)
Portsmouth County Sheriff’s Office (warrant service officer)
Scott County Sheriff’s Office (task force model)
Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (task force model)
Virginia Marine Resources Commission (task force model)
Washington County Sheriff’s Office (task force model)

Earlier in June, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security refused to explain why it deleted a list of what it called sanctuary jurisdictions from its website. The list included 33 Virginia localities, with spokespersons from many of them claiming they were wrongfully included. One included locality did not exist.

Elizabeth Warren Endorses Tom Perriello In Virginia Governor’s Race

WASHINGTON ― Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren endorsed Tom Perriello in the Democratic primary for Virginia governor on Monday in an interview with HuffPost, giving the insurgent progressive candidate an important boost in a race that has become increasingly competitive.

When Perriello, a former congressman from Charlottesville, jumped into the Democratic race in January against Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam, he was seen as a late entrant with little chance at the nomination. But with the mood of the Democratic electorate rising against President Donald Trump, Perriello, a populist who has made standing up to Trump central to his campaign, has surged in the polls.

Warren said she had tried to coax Perriello to join her at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau after he lost his re-election to Congress in 2010. “I actually tried to hire him a long time ago,” she said. “So, when I was setting up the consumer agency ... I took advantage, or tried to take advantage, of some really strong people who had been in elective office and lost.”

Richard Cordray, now director of the CFPB, was another such ex-office holder. “I thought Tom Perriello would be terrific, too,” Warren said. “He’s strong, he’s aggressive on consumer issues, and I really wanted him to come and be one of the major people running the CFPB. Now, he decided he wanted to take a different direction and he said with regret ― at least I hope it was with regret ― that he couldn’t come and join us at the agency and he headed off and did some work in Africa, and I really respect what he has done. He’s an exciting guy.”

Warren spoke to HuffPost as part of a book tour for the release of her This Fight Is Our Fight, which has soared to the top of the charts.

Warren was the intellectual godmother of the CFPB, conjuring it up in an article for the journal Democracy, and then working to usher it through Congress as an outside agitator. Perriello served in Congress the year the agency was created, and was a strong backer. Warren was named temporary head of the agency to get it off the ground.

Perriello, after Congress, worked for the political arm of the Democratic think tank Center for American Progress, and then became a diplomat, focusing on peace negotiations in the Great Lakes region of Africa.

“I think that if he’s governor, he would be terrific,” Warren said. “He’s a guy with values. He’s practical, he’s pragmatic, that’s why I wanted him at the agency. He’s the kind of guy who says, ‘I am going to make change and I’m going to make change not for the richest, not for the most powerful, not for what’s politically expedient. I want to make change for hard-working families.’”

Given the vibrancy of the Democratic Party’s activist wing, both candidates in the Virginia race have fought to stake out the most progressive flank, with Northam highlighting Perriello’s squishy past on reproductive freedom, for which he has since apologized, saying his views have evolved. But the endorsement of Warren follows the backing of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), and gives Perriello a clear path to claim the populist-progressive mantle in the race. Perriello was endorsed last week by the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, which backs liberal candidates in primaries and general elections.

Perriello was quick to embrace the endorsement by Warren. “Students, workers and consumers have always had a champion in Sen. Warren, a movement leader who has spent her career fighting to protect us from corporate greed and crushing debt,” he said in a statement forwarded by his campaign spokesperson. “She led the 2014 fight that would have allowed 629,000 Virginians to refinance their federal student loans, and she created the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, which protects Virginia families from predatory lenders and abuses by credit card and mortgage companies. I’m proud to have her support in my progressive campaign to raise wages, make college more affordable, and put consumers ahead of unchecked greed, so that no Virginia family is left behind.”

Northam, meanwhile, has the backing of Gov. Terry McAuliffe, a close ally of Hillary Clinton, as well as Virginia Sens. Tim Kaine and Mark Warner, and much of the rest of the Virginia Democratic political establishment. Term limits prevent McAuliffe from seeking re-election.

To have Sanders and Warren backing a candidate against the one supported by the state’s home senators, both Democrats as well, is an unusual situation, but it reflects the way that the national debate over the future of the party can’t be avoided at the state level. Or, as we learned last week, not in Omaha, either.

Supreme Court rejects Republican challenge to Virginia's new congressional map 23MAI16

Supreme Court rejects Republican challenge to Virginia's new congressional map

As expected, the Supreme Court left untouched a lower court ruling that had forced Virginia to implement new congressional lines in 2016 because the state’s previous map was found to be an illegal racial gerrymander. The lower court determined that Republican legislators had improperly packed minority voters into a single 3rd District spanning from Richmond to Norfolk, which effectively made all the surrounding districts whiter—and therefore more likely to elect a Republican. The lower court ordered the above map into place, which created a new 4th District with a large enough black population to allow African-American voters to elect their candidate of choice.

The Supreme Court’s decision is a win for minority voting rights and consequently Democrats, since Obama won the new 4th District with 61 percent of the vote. Black representation will likely double from one to two members in southeastern Virginia with the likely election of Democratic state Sen. Don McEachin, who is the leading candidate in the revised 4th District.

Unfortunately, the Supreme Court did not set a national precedent by ruling on the merits of the case. Instead, the justices unanimously ruled that Republican legislators lacked legal standing to bring the case in the first place, meaning that the lower court’s ruling consequently stands—but it only applies to the case at hand. As a result, this lawsuit will not clarify further issues that remain in similar racial gerrymandering disputes, such as one in North Carolina.

This ruling demonstrates just how important it is that Democrats win the 2016 presidential election and take back the Senate, so that they can confirm a new Supreme Court justice who strongly supports voting rights. A new majority on the court could establish a national precedent against racial gerrymandering, which could be used in several more states where legislators can draw another district to elect a minority representative.

In order to attend Trinity Christian Academy in Wichita, Kansas, both parents and students must sign a form that acknowledging (among other things) that they understand they can be expelled if they have an LGBT family member in the home. Not for being an LGBT student at the private Christian school, merely for having an LGBT family member in the home. The highlighted bullet point from patheos.com:

Given the debate and confusion in our society about marriage and human sexuality it is vital that Trinity families agree with and support the school’s traditional, Christian understanding of those issues. Therefore, when the atmosphere or conduct within a particular home is counter to the school’s understanding of a biblical lifestyle, including the practice or promotion of the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) lifestyle or alternative gender identity, the school should have the right, in its sole discretion, to deny the admission of an applicant or discontinue enrollment of a current student.
