SEA SHEPHERD E MAIL NEWSLETTER 28SEP11

SEA SHEPHERD updates on the thugs of taiji, Japan, shark poaching in the Galapagos, the seal slaughter in Namibia and the upcoming illegal whaling season in the Southern Oceans.

Dear Friend of Sea Shepherd,
Seals continue to need our help! One of Sea Shepherd's first major campaigns, back in 1979, was to defend the seals in Canada and thirty-two years later we are still defending seals - currently in Namibia.
And we work hard to turn your support into real results! In addition to our recent progress in Namibia, we have now begun our second year with the Cove Guardians in Taiji, Japan (The Cove), with a the goal of saving even more dolphins than we did last season. We are also making preparations to return to the Southern Ocean to be ready if the whalers decide to return. If they do not, we will focus on defending sharks in the South Pacific, but if the harpoon boats do return we will be there to meet and stop them. All of this is made possible by your support. Thank-you for all you do.

Sea Shepherd Meets the Voice of Namibia

Our crew returned to Windhoek, Namibia last week to meet with the country's ombudsman and demand an immediate end to the illegal slaughter of seals. After a closed-door meeting with Sea Shepherd, peer NGOs, advocates for the seal hunt, and Namibia's ombudsman, potential progress was made for the seals. (more)

An End to the Namibian Seal Slaughter?
A lot has happened since July, when we sent a covert team into Namibia. With celebrities publicly speaking out against the cruel seal slaughter and many many more NGOs focusing on the issue - the media and international pressure on Namibia is truly growing.
Learn more about the seal slaughter, including information on economics, science, and the options available to Namibia.

Operation Infinite Patience - Cove Guardians
Cove Guardian campaign leader Rosie Kunneke arrived in Taiji, Japan almost two weeks ago and is standing guard for the dolphins! Rosie is tweeting breaking news and updates as they happen. Be sure to follow @seashepherd on Twitter and search for the hashtag #Tweet4Taiji.
Get more info on the Cove Guardians and check out Rosie's weekly reports in Taiji.

Shark Fishing Vessel Caught in Galapagos

Galapagos hadn't fully recovered from one of the largest shark poaching cases, which happened this past July, when yet another offending vessel was caught inside the Galapagos Marine Reserve just last week. (more)

Relax in Style
The Chaser LA Sea Shepherd Fleece Raglan is our favorite laid-back sweatshirt. Featuring long sleeves and a relaxed crew next that can be worn off the shoulder, each garment is as unique as the next, and they are individually handled for the burnout process.
Remember, purchases made in any of our global e-Stores help fund our marine conservation campaigns.

We have achieved success in the face of impossible odds, year after year, because we have your support to keep us focused, effective, and dynamic. You help us to look at what seems impossible, and you help us to achieve triumph against all obstacles to make the impossible - possible!
We are you, and you are us, and together we are the Shepherds of the Sea. Please be as generous as you can today and give a much-needed, appreciated, and valued contribution. And then watch us translate it into effective action! For the oceans,

SEA SHEPHERD E MAIL NEWSLETTER 1SEP11

UPDATES on Sea Shepherd activities in the Faeroes, Taiji, and the Galapagos and getting ready for the coming seasons anti-whaling campaign in the Southern Oceans.

Dear Friend of Sea Shepherd,
When we arrive, the killers take notice. This point was made very clear most recently with Operation Ferocious Isles as zero whales were killed during our time in the Faeroe Islands. Now two of the Sea Shepherd ships, the Steve Irwin and the Brigitte Bardot, are returning to Great Britain to begin preparations for our next Antarctic Whale Defense Campaign in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary. We will be ready to once again intervene against illegal Japanese whaling.
This year has seen many Sea Shepherd campaigns and victories. Never before have we been so active and effective. Our increased capabilities are due to a growing support base and steadfast help from people like you. We do the best we can with the resources available to us and more support translates into even greater activism. Please be as generous as you can today so that we may continue in our efforts to defend ocean wildlife and habitats worldwide.

No Whales Killed in Faeroes Under our Watch
Operation Ferocious Isles Pilot Whale Defense Campaign is a success!

June, July, and August are the three most notorious months for the slaughter of whales in the Faeroe Islands because they are peak migration months. Our objective was to prevent the killing of any whales during this period and that objective has been realized. Get the details!

Shameful Slaughter in Taiji Commences

Today the fishermen of Taiji, Japan start their annual, cruel, eight-month practice of rounding up dolphins for slaughter and captivity.

Sea Shepherd has a group of Cove Guardians gearing up to stand strong in Taiji to prevent the slaughter of as many dolphins as possible. Last year, we saved more than 50% of the usual kill quota. Learn more about this issue and how you can become a Cove Guardian too!
Lady Justice Has Abandoned Galapagos
Environmental justice is poorly delivered in the Galapagos. We have worked very hard for two years on our legal project and the chance to make history as the first non-governmental organization to prosecute an environmental case in the islands. We recently discovered the Galapagos legal system is currently incapable of dealing with environmental crimes, but we have a positive plan for action!

Read more about the biggest case of shark killing ever in Galapagos National Park and our plans for bringing Lady Justice back to the Galapagos Islands.
Sea Shepherd Sector 9 Skateboards Debut
We have partnered with Sector 9 to produce three eco-friendly skateboards! The Eternal Mini, Sea No Evil Pintail, and Jolly Roger Street Skate boards are made using sustainably harvested woods and wheels that are half soy urethane. These boards are available as a complete board or deck only with grip. They are great for all levels of skateboarders.

Proceeds from merchandise sales help fund our campaigns to defend ocean wildlife worldwide. Show you support and order a Sea Shepherd Sector 9 Skateboard today!

We have made the progress we have, achieved the victories we have, done what no one else has done before, and saved the lives of thousands of marine animals simply because people like yourself have had faith in us and have given us the tools, materials, ships, and financial resources to make it all possible.
I hope you will continue to support us in this ongoing struggle against poachers, corruption, cruelty, and slaughter. Thank-you.

Report from Taiji from SEA SHEPHERD 4MAI11

While the actions of the thugs of Taiji, Japan don't represent all Japanese the tolerance of their actions by the citizens and government of Japan, their economic support of the slaughter of whales and dolphins takes away from the sympathy many feel for them after the earthquake of two months ago. This from Sea Shepherd, click the header to go to the post on the website to see the video......

Sneaky Bastards

Dead babyDead baby
The Taiji Town officials would have us believe that they are being magnanimous by foregoing their spring whale hunt in order to send their two coastal whaling vessels to help out their brethren in the north.  What a load of crap.
While it may be true that their boats are up north, we are hearing reports that some sort of whale was killed in Taiji Town yesterday and today the molesters drove a pod of (possible) pilot whales into the cove.  After a big show in late February of removing the banger poles and taking down the veil of tarps, the poles and tarps are back.  When I showed up at the cove this afternoon the molesters went into a frenzied panic and began setting up lights and adding extra nets around the corralled cetaceans.
I estimate there are at least 50 and likely many more in the nets.  All the preparations are in place for an early morning slaughter and a baby has already died.  Perhaps it died from exhaustion or got tangled in the net enclosure.
These so called men are sick individuals.  Has there not been enough death and destruction in these islands over the past few weeks?  Let’s not forget about all of the highly radioactive water that is continuing to be pumped into the ocean.  Not only are whales and dolphins contaminated with mercury, but now there is the threat of radiation too.
The officials claim they have a “season” on pilot whales that goes through the end of May.  How convenient is that?
Today was a holiday in Japan.  The weather in Taiji was gorgeous.  There were overflow crowds at the whale museum and children played in the gravel at water’s edge in the cove.  Meanwhile, an entire family unit of wild and grand creatures with complex social behaviors and intelligence far beyond that of humans was being held captive and awaiting death just yards away.  There is something seriously wrong with this picture.

SEA SHEPHERD reports on Operation No Compromise and the continuing dolphin slaughter in The Cove in Taiji, Japan.

Defending Ocean Wildlife Worldwide
As you read this, all whaling operations in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary have been shut down 100% by Sea Shepherd. Thanks to support from people like you, we have become and are widely recognized as one of the most effective defenders of marine wildlife in the world. We get the job done! And we are getting the job done right now saving whales!

During Operation No Compromise, more whales have been saved than in any year before by any organization trying to save whales off the coast of Antarctica! We are only able to be successful because of the generosity of caring people like you. Day in and day out, your donations truly make a difference! Please donate today and help us continue to get the job done. Thank you for your support. It is our lifeblood.

Whaling Operations Currently Shut Down
Operation No Compromise logoOperation No Compromise just keeps getting better! The Gojira and the Bob Barker have intercepted the whale processing vessel, the Nisshin Maru, and have interrupted its illegal operations.

The Bob Barker has placed itself immediately aft to the stern slipway of the Nisshin Maru. By blocking the stern slipway, the factory ship is unable to load dead whales from the harpoon vessels. If the harpoon vessels cannot offload their catch, they cannot catch more whales. This means that whaling operations have been shut down in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary as of present. (more)

Steve Irwin Refuel Successful and Departs for the Sanctuary

Our flagship vessel, the Steve Irwin, has successfully completed its much-needed resupply mission to Wellington, New Zealand and is now en route to the Southern Ocean to rejoin its fleet.

Within a week, the Steve Irwin will be back with our other two ships on the trail of the Japanese whaling fleet, fully supplied, and with the ability to take our campaign to the end of the whaling season in March. (more)

Narrow Escape for the Gojira

Narrow escape for the GojiraLast week saw an incident in the Southern Ocean that brought back not-so-distant memories of the Ady Gil collision last January!

The Yushin Maru No. 3 deliberately turned into the Gojira in an attempt to ram and destroy the fast multi hulled vessel. The Gojira narrowly escaped being sliced in two. (more)

With so much going on in our campaigns right now, we are busy planning for the year ahead, as well. Last year saw more Sea Shepherd campaigns than ever before and this year we intend to keep the momentum up and save as many sea creatures and their environments as possible!

The fact is - it is expensive to save a life. It would (financially) cost nothing for you and me to ignore the exploitation and slaughter of the wonderful creatures with whom we share this planet, but I can do no such thing and I know that you can't either. I know the cost future generations will incur if our generation stands idly by and does nothing. Consider donating today and help us stand against the costly exploitation of our oceans. Thank-you!
