Op Divine Wind Q&A with Captain Watson
Wondering about Operation Divine Wind? Maybe you'd like to know how we're going to handle an angrier and better-financed whaling fleet this year? Or which crewmembers will rejoin the whale wars this season? With this special Q&A from Captain Watson, you can get answers to these questions and more!

Rally for the Sharks of Western Australia
As a keystone species, sharks play a critically important role in the health of our oceans. These ancient creatures should be protected and respected, yet they are feared and massacred by billions of people due to ignorance and greed.

The Western Australia government recently gave the green light for a shark cull targeted at a great white that killed an American man in the waters of Rottnest Island on Oct 22. In response to great pressure from Sea Shepherd and its supporters, the government has made a wise decision. (more)

Aussie Government Attempted to Sabotage Operation Divine Wind
Australian citizens are one of the largest supporter bases for Sea Shepherd, but support from the government of Australia is a different story. With no reason given, our helicopter pilot, Chris Aultman, was denied a visa to enter Australia and join Operation Divine Wind.

Get the details on the obstacle we had to overcome and the end result for the whales.

SEA SHEPHERD E MAIL NEWSLETTER 28SEP11

SEA SHEPHERD updates on the thugs of taiji, Japan, shark poaching in the Galapagos, the seal slaughter in Namibia and the upcoming illegal whaling season in the Southern Oceans.

Dear Friend of Sea Shepherd,
Seals continue to need our help! One of Sea Shepherd's first major campaigns, back in 1979, was to defend the seals in Canada and thirty-two years later we are still defending seals - currently in Namibia.
And we work hard to turn your support into real results! In addition to our recent progress in Namibia, we have now begun our second year with the Cove Guardians in Taiji, Japan (The Cove), with a the goal of saving even more dolphins than we did last season. We are also making preparations to return to the Southern Ocean to be ready if the whalers decide to return. If they do not, we will focus on defending sharks in the South Pacific, but if the harpoon boats do return we will be there to meet and stop them. All of this is made possible by your support. Thank-you for all you do.

Sea Shepherd Meets the Voice of Namibia

Our crew returned to Windhoek, Namibia last week to meet with the country's ombudsman and demand an immediate end to the illegal slaughter of seals. After a closed-door meeting with Sea Shepherd, peer NGOs, advocates for the seal hunt, and Namibia's ombudsman, potential progress was made for the seals. (more)

An End to the Namibian Seal Slaughter?
A lot has happened since July, when we sent a covert team into Namibia. With celebrities publicly speaking out against the cruel seal slaughter and many many more NGOs focusing on the issue - the media and international pressure on Namibia is truly growing.
Learn more about the seal slaughter, including information on economics, science, and the options available to Namibia.

Shark Fishing Vessel Caught in Galapagos

Galapagos hadn't fully recovered from one of the largest shark poaching cases, which happened this past July, when yet another offending vessel was caught inside the Galapagos Marine Reserve just last week. (more)

Relax in Style
The Chaser LA Sea Shepherd Fleece Raglan is our favorite laid-back sweatshirt. Featuring long sleeves and a relaxed crew next that can be worn off the shoulder, each garment is as unique as the next, and they are individually handled for the burnout process.
Remember, purchases made in any of our global e-Stores help fund our marine conservation campaigns.

We have achieved success in the face of impossible odds, year after year, because we have your support to keep us focused, effective, and dynamic. You help us to look at what seems impossible, and you help us to achieve triumph against all obstacles to make the impossible - possible!
We are you, and you are us, and together we are the Shepherds of the Sea. Please be as generous as you can today and give a much-needed, appreciated, and valued contribution. And then watch us translate it into effective action! For the oceans,

Has the Japanese Whaling Fleet Surrendered? 30NOV10

GOOD NEWS FROM SEA SHEPHERD!
Nisshin Maru in portNisshin Maru in port on November 29Could the whale wars be over? Things are looking very good in that direction! The whalers may be close to capitulation.
It is December 1st, at least on the Japanese and Australian side of the International Date Line, but the Japanese whaling fleet remains in port.
For years I have said that Sea Shepherd goes down to the Southern Ocean stronger than the year before, and the Japanese ships go down weaker. They may be weaker than we thought. They may be ready to call it quits. The illegal Japanese whaling fleet may be on the brink of surrendering, at least for this year.
Never before has the Japanese whaling fleet left later than November 19th. That was more than 10 days ago, which means they will certainly not be able to begin whaling around December 20th as they do every year.
If the fleet left today they would not begin whaling until January, and this delay will certainly see no whales killed during the month of December.
Apparently one of the primary reasons for them not departing is that their supply ship the Hiyo Maru No.2 (formally the Oriental Bluebird), has been sold by its owner the Daito Trading Company to China to be scrapped. Although this happened in August, the Institute for Cetacean Research has been unable to charter a replacement. The reason is that they are finding it difficult to find a ship owner willing to be associated with their brutal and illegal whaling operation in the Southern Ocean—and willing to be targeted by the Sea Shepherd fleet.
“I think the Japanese P.R. strategy of labeling Sea Shepherd as a ‘violent eco-terrorist’ organization has backfired,” said Captain Paul Watson, “They have scared the companies they do business with and they are frightening their own crews. They are now paying higher insurance premiums and making less money. We have taken their profits from them for five years. Now we need to take this despicable enterprise away from them and make sure they stay out of the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary.”
The three Sea Shepherd Ships, Steve Irwin, Bob Barker, and Gojira are ready to head to the Southern Ocean – the only thing missing down there are the whalers!
Is this the beginning of the end for illegal whaling in the Southern Ocean?
We can only hope so.

Defending Ocean Wildlife Worldwide
Dear Craig,

There's still so much to do! December 3rd - our updated planned departure date for Operation No Compromise - is just around the corner and your support is extremely vital in these moments leading up to the start of this year's Antarctic Whale Defense Campaign.

We have three vessels and courageous crewmembers who have skills, experience, and the conviction to take on this daring and pivotal expedition. Now we just need you to help get us there and keep our ships at sea!
Because Neptune's Navy Never Compromises
Operation No Compromise logoLast season, we saved more whales than the Japanese whalers were able to kill. This season, we will once again be able to track and intervene against the poachers for the entire season. Our goal is to shut down whaling in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary permanently.

You can be a part of our efforts! Please check out all the happenings on our new Operation No Compromise website and send your support today.
Japan Censors Tourists from Tuna Auctions
From December 1 to January 22, if you are a tourist in Japan you will not be allowed to attend or view the Tsukiji fish market's tuna auctions!

The bluefin tuna is heading towards extinction and this translates into increasing demand in Japan. Tourists are being barred from the tuna auctions to ensure that all auction activities can be conducted smoothly. Sound fishy? Read more...

We have no qualms about how tough this next campaign will be. We are going up against ruthless killers who have no respect for the gentle giants of the sea - the whales - or the place that is internationally recognized as their sanctuary - the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary.

No matter the challenges we face or the setbacks we endure, one thing is certain - we will not rest until whaling ends. No compromises. Please support our actions to defend and conserve ocean wildlife worldwide. Thank-you!
