Photo: Barbara VeigaIt’s official – the Japanese whaling fleet has called it quits in the Southern Ocean, at least for this season. And if they return next season, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society will be ready to resume their efforts to obstruct and disable illegal Japanese whaling operations.
“The Nisshin Maru made a significant course change immediately after the Japanese government made it official that the whaling fleet has been recalled,” said Captain Alex Cornelissen from the Bob Barker. “She looks like she’s going home!”
The Sea Shepherd ship Bob Barker has been tailing the Japanese Nisshin Maru factory ship since February 9th making it impossible for the whalers to continue their illegal whaling operations.
“I have a crew of 88 very happy people from 23 different nations including Japan and they are absolutely thrilled that the whalers are heading home and the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary is now indeed a real sanctuary,” said Captain Paul Watson.
The Sea Shepherd ships Steve Irwin, Bob Barker, and Gojira will remain in the Southern Ocean to escort the Japanese ships northward. “We will not leave the whale sanctuary until the last whaling ship has departed,” said Gojira captain Locky MacLean.
“This is a great victory for the whales,” said Captain Watson, “but we did not do this alone. Without the support of the people of Australia and New Zealand, we would not have been able to send voyages out for seven seasons from Australian and New Zealand ports. We are grateful to Senator Bob Brown and the Australian Greens Party. We are very grateful to Mr. Bob Barker for giving us the ship that turned the tide in our efforts to force the Japanese fleet from these waters. We are grateful to all our onshore staff and volunteers, supporting members and ship crews. We are grateful to the Chilean Navy and the government of France for their support. It is a very happy day for people everywhere who love whales and our oceans.”
It’s official – the killing of whales in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary is over for this season and the whalers did not even take 10% of their quota. Sea Shepherd estimates that over 900 whales have been saved this year.
“It’s a great day for the whales,” said Sea Shepherd Chief Cook on the Steve Irwin Laura Dakin of Canberra, Australia, “and it’s a great day for humanity!”

Japanese Whalers Escorted out of the Whaling Grounds

The Japanese whaling fleet is heading eastward at full speed and is now east of the boundary for their whaling grounds. The eastern boundary of the Japanese whaling operations is 145 degrees west. The whaling ships and the two Sea Shepherd ships are now at 72 degrees south and 133 degrees west on a course of 145 degrees. With the Bob Barker and the Gojira in pursuit, the Nisshin Maru continues to head eastward at 14 knots.
Both the whaling ships and the Sea Shepherd ships Bob Barker and the Gojira are now closer to South America than to New Zealand and Australia. This position is 3000 nautical miles southeast of Hobart, Australia and 1700 miles southwest of Patagonia, Argentina.
The Nisshin Maru is making erratic course changes. “It’s like they spin the bottle every watch to see what course to set,” said Captain of the Bob Barker Alex Cornelissen. “There is no rationality in these course changes. They go east, then south, then west, then north and then back east again. In short, they are burning quite a bit of fuel, going absolutely nowhere, and without being able to kill a single whale.”
The Steve Irwin is southeast bound, out of Wellington, en route to rendezvous in about a week with the other two Sea Shepherd ships and the Japanese whaling fleet.

The Gojira and the Bob Barker have intercepted the whale processing vessel, the Nisshin Maru, and have interrupted its illegal operations. The Bob Barker has placed itself immediately aft to the stern slipway of the Nisshin Maru. By blocking the stern slipway, the factory ship is unable to load dead whales from the harpoon vessels. If the harpoon vessels cannot offload their catch, they cannot catch more whales. This means that whaling operations have been shut down in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary as of present. (more)    Steve Irwin Refuel Successful and Departs for the Sanctuary Our flagship vessel, the Steve Irwin, has successfully completed its much-needed resupply mission to Wellington, New Zealand and is now en route to the Southern Ocean to rejoin its fleet. Within a week, the Steve Irwin will be back with our other two ships on the trail of the Japanese whaling fleet, fully supplied, and with the ability to take our campaign to the end of the whaling season in March. The Yushin Maru No. 3 deliberately turned into the Gojira in an attempt to ram and destroy the fast multi hulled vessel. The Gojira narrowly escaped being sliced in two. I'm writing to you today from the Southern Ocean, as my crew and I head north to New Zealand, to ask for your help to refuel our flagship the Steve Irwin so that we can go back to the sanctuary and keep the illegal Japanese whaling operations shut down for the entire season. Last year, we were able to save 528 whales, which is more than the whalers were able to kill, but this year we have almost completely shut them down. So far the Japanese kill figures are very close to zero. We intercepted and then tailed their refueling and resupply vessel for three weeks, thus cutting off their ability to extend their operations. As my crew and I head north, the Bob Barker and the Gojira remain in pursuit of the whaling fleet, keeping them on the move and preventing them from whaling.  Maintaining three ships, a helicopter, and 88 crewmembers in the Southern Ocean is enormously expensive. When you donate a dollar to Sea Shepherd, nearly all of it is used primarily to keep our ships and our crews in the field where they can make a difference. This approach keeps us small, but more importantly - it keeps us effective!   The Steve Irwin needs to purchase 240 tons of marine diesel fuel. It costs about USD$800 for a ton of fuel, so this means we need to raise over $192,000 to fill the tanks and enable us to return.   Whatever you can donate will make a difference! Reducing the kill quota to very close to zero is an enduring investment. To start this off, I have donated $5000 towards this effort myself. Just as I would never ask any of my crew to do anything I would not do myself, I will not ask any of our supporters to donate without donating myself. Your support in keeping our ships and crew at sea is the only guarantee that the whales have of survival and to be free from cruel slaughter by the ruthless killing machines from Japan. Your efforts will help us abolish whaling in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary.
