Dear Friend of Sea Shepherd, It's a day to celebrate! Operation Divine Wind is over and the whaling fleet is heading home early with a fraction of their quota! For eight years we have obstructed the whale killers in the Southern Ocean, and we will continue to obstruct them for another eight years if that is what it takes to end their illegal hunt. As a result of our Antarctic Whale Defense Campaigns, nearly 3,500 whales continue to live and swim freely. This is all the motivation we require to sustain our fight in these remote, hostile, and terribly cold unforgiving seas. We know that all of our efforts and success would not be possible without the incredible dedication and support from people like you all over the world. Please donate today and help us continue our fight to defend the whales and other sea creatures worldwide. Operation Divine Wind is Over! The Japanese Whalers are Going Home! The Japanese whaling fleet has left the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary almost a month early and with an estimated 30% of their quota! Thank-you to everyone who has been a part of this valiant effort. This has been a tough campaign for us. We have endured the toughest weather we have ever seen in the Southern Ocean, and we suffered the temporary loss of our scout ship, the Brigitte Bardot, but we will not be deterred and we will not stop until whaling ends — the word "sanctuary" actually means something to us. If the Japanese whalers return next year, we will launch Operation Cetacean Justice with four ships, two helicopters, four drones, and 120 volunteers. (more) Hong Kong Airlines Bans Transport of Wild Animals Thanks to the persistent efforts of Gary Stokes and several other activists, this is the last picture you will see from Hong Kong Airlines where it is transporting dolphins or any other wild animals. Hong Kong Airlines has released a public statement indicating it will no longer participate in the transport of dolphins and other wild animals. This action should send a message to all airlines that the consequences of transporting dolphins will result in global negative publicity and financial loss. Stopping the transport of dolphins will cripple the international dolphin trade and, in turn, stop the slaughter. (more) A Light at the End of the Tunnel for the Galapagos Islands? In recent years, we have seen the local judicial system in the Galapagos hit rock bottom over defending environmental issues. We have worked hard to include environmental judicial issues in the public agenda at the local and national level. After two years of tireless environmental advocacy over an urgent local judicial change, we now may be witnessing history in the making. (more) Taiji: Dolphin Killing Season Over, but the Killing Never Stops It may be the end of the dolphin drive-hunting season, but that doesn’t mean the killing stops and neither does our presence. The Cove Guardians remain a strong force in Taiji. (more) Cove Guardian Erwin Vermeulen Receives a Hero's Welcome in Amsterdam After spending 63 days in a Japanese prison and ultimately being acquitted of the charges brought against him, Cove Guardian Erwin Vermeulen received a hero's welcome home when he arrived back in Amsterdam last week. Erwin's experience focused international attention on the ongoing atrocities committed against the dolphins of Taiji. He is a Cove Guardian hero, who absolutely deserved a homecoming of this merit. No Welfare for Whalers This Year? from SEA SHEPHERD 26APR11

CUTTING CORPORATE WELFARE in Japan.......too bad that idea can't take hold in D.C.!!!
The Japanese whaling industry, otherwise known as the Institute for Cetacean Research, has been kicked off the dole this year.
The corporate welfare whale killers will most likely not be able to return to the Southern Ocean in December 2011. The Japanese government this week announced massive budget cuts to divert monies for the restoration needed to repair earthquake and tsunami damages and to help the people evacuated from the no-go zone around Fukushima. In addition, the ongoing crisis of keeping the nuclear reactors cooled is draining hundreds of millions of dollars from the government treasury.
This has resulted in cuts across the board, including child support, senior citizen support and pensions, and infrastructure repairs and maintenance.
However, the government bureaucrats of Japan are still driven by pride, anger and revenge. For this reason, Japan recently sent a delegation to Palau to pressure the Republic of Palau from working with the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. Japan has offered but not yet confirmed that they will supply Palau with a patrol boat and funds to operate it if Palau rejects the agreement with Sea Shepherd.
Sea Shepherd will be quite satisfied if Palau gets the support of Japan for the patrol vessel and funds. That will allow us to go onto other Pacific island nations to make similar offers, which hopefully will motivate Japan to respond with counter offers. We may be able to manipulate Japan into providing fishery patrol vessels to the entire South Pacific region.
So there is a small possibility that the government could still risk public outrage in Japan by once again subsidizing the Japanese whaling fleet. And if that happens, Sea Shepherd ships will once again return to the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary to continue our interventions against unlawful Japanese commercial whaling activities.
There have been a few critics who have been advising us to lay off Japan because of the recent disasters. The point is that Sea Shepherd interventions are not targeting the Japanese people. We are addressing unlawful activities – whale poachers in an area far from Japan, the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary, where whales are supposedly protected by law.
Would the war against drug trafficking be put on hold if Colombia has an earthquake? Would we stop opposing shark finning by Chinese longliners off Latin America if China suffers an earthquake? The answer is “no.” Natural disasters cannot be used as a justification for illegal activity including the violations of international conservation law.
The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is dedicated to shutting down all illegal whaling activity by anyone, anywhere, for any reason. There can be no discrimination. Poaching is poaching and not only is it ethically wrong – it’s a crime!

It is our lifeblood.     Whaling Operations Currently Shut Down Operation No Compromise just keeps getting better! The Gojira and the Bob Barker have intercepted the whale processing vessel, the Nisshin Maru, and have interrupted its illegal operations. The Bob Barker has placed itself immediately aft to the stern slipway of the Nisshin Maru. By blocking the stern slipway, the factory ship is unable to load dead whales from the harpoon vessels. If the harpoon vessels cannot offload their catch, they cannot catch more whales. This means that whaling operations have been shut down in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary as of present. (more)    Steve Irwin Refuel Successful and Departs for the Sanctuary Our flagship vessel, the Steve Irwin, has successfully completed its much-needed resupply mission to Wellington, New Zealand and is now en route to the Southern Ocean to rejoin its fleet. Within a week, the Steve Irwin will be back with our other two ships on the trail of the Japanese whaling fleet, fully supplied, and with the ability to take our campaign to the end of the whaling season in March. (more)    Narrow Escape for the Gojira Last week saw an incident in the Southern Ocean that brought back not-so-distant memories of the Ady Gil collision last January! The Yushin Maru No. 3 deliberately turned into the Gojira in an attempt to ram and destroy the fast multi hulled vessel. The Gojira narrowly escaped being sliced in two.
