Sea Shepherd E-News: What you can do for the oceans 1FEB13

HERE is the latest e mail newsletter from Sea Shepherd with a few important calls to action to support the work they do. Two involve We The People petitions. One of these is a petition calling on the US government to take action against the japanese whaling industry's whaling in the Southern Whale Sanctuary, violating international law covering the sanctuary. The second is calling on the US government to provide a  a safe haven for Capt Paul Watson in his ongoing legal battles with the German, and Costa Rican governments, Interpol and the shark fining industry. The persecution of Captain Watson has gone on long enough, and We The People have the right and responsibility to tell our government to grant him safe haven / sanctuary. Please sign the petitions. And there are others actions and updates in this newsletter, there is much to be done because Sea Shepherd is such an affective defender of our oceans and all who live in them.

Dear Friend of Sea Shepherd,

There's so much you can do to defend marine wildlife, no matter where you are in the world. Not everyone can join a Sea Shepherd campaign, and many people aren't able to financially support the conservation efforts so close to their hearts. In this edition of the Sea Shepherd E-News, we present many ways that you can make an impact for our mission and the animals at no cost to yourself.

If you are someone who is fortunate enough to be able to help finance our mission, please keep us in your heart. Your contributions are the very lifeblood that keeps our organization on top as the world's leading direct-action conservation non-profit. Each person in this world can do something to contribute to the greater good, whether it is a financial contribution and/or the contribution of your time and energy in person or even online. Have you thought about what you can do to help defend, conserve, and protect the oceans?
Save Whales and Help Captain Watson
The United States White House has created a modern and easy way for the people's voice to be heard. Official petitions can be created on their website, and once a petition receives 100,000 signatures it elicits an official response from the White House.
Sea Shepherd has created two very important petitions, one of which could provide safe haven for Captain Watson and the other asks the United States to take strong action to stop the Japanese from killing whales in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary. We only have until February 28th to reach the required number of signatures.

You don't have to be a US citizen to sign the petitions, but you do need to create a user account on their website. Help us!

Secret Rooftops Hiding Shameful Atrocities
Can you guess what those light and dark grey things on the roof of the building pictured below are? Each speck represents a shark's fin! In fact, you are looking at more than 10,000 shark fins drying on a roof in Hong Kong during the month of January! Gary Stokes, Sea Shepherd Hong Kong Coordinator, broke the story, garnering worldwide news coverage.

Sharks need protection now, and they need CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) to do the right thing and base their protection status on scientific facts rather than financial greed. Only when the killing and trade of this apex predator, which is so vital to the health of the oceans, become officially illegal will we see a stop to this atrocity. Learn more!
You Can Help Sea Shepherd Win €25,000!
The BiLLe Celeb Charity Challenge is a great way that you can be involved on a daily basis and help fund Sea Shepherd campaigns with a simple, free vote. Each month, one charity wins big − and we need your help during the month of February to take home the prize. It takes just two minutes to create an account, and then you can vote once a day (or as often as you are able) to help us secure the win!

Thanks to dedicated Sea Shepherd supporters around the world, we just won the January BiLLe Celeb Charity Challenge with a prize of €25,000! Our campaigns are very costly − and effective! Every bit helps the animals, and another win in February would do so much for our mission. We're currently in 2nd place. Vote now!

What we do is not easy. Sea Shepherd works on the cutting edge of activism. We go where others dare not go and take on tasks that no one else has ever done, and we do it all within the boundaries of the law, and without causing harm to any sentient beings.

Yes, we push the envelope and we take chances, and we have been doing so for thirty-five years, but in that time we have achieved some amazing victories, yet there is still so much work to be done. We operate on a relatively small budget with a predominately volunteer crew, and we are able to do so much because of your generosity and compassion. Thank you for standing strong with Sea Shepherd. Your support inspires us to take action each and every day.

Sea Shepherd E-News: Saving lives and protecting biodiversity 19OKT12

THE latest e mail newsletter from Sea Shepherd. By the by, Captain Paul Watson is still in hiding due to the ongoing extradition / jumping bail case involving Germany and Costa Rica. Corporations threatened by Sea Shepherd are controlling courts and justice ministries, not surprising in Costa Rica but extremely disappointing in Germany and the EU.

When we put out a call to action — Sea Shepherd supporters rally in droves! Just last week, our Cove Guardians had their computer gear confiscated by the police in Taiji in a ploy to try to disable our communications and stop us from internationally exposing the plight of the dolphins in the infamous Cove. In just a few days' time, people like you came through for us and raised the $4,000 USD necessary to replace our gear and reinstate our communications immediately. On behalf of the dolphins, thank-you for that!

Now we need to continue to raise funds for our most expensive campaign of the year, Operation Zero Tolerance, which takes place in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary, and to continue to finance our ongoing efforts in the Galapagos, Brazil, Namibia, Europe, Costa Rica, and La Reunion Island. We go up against poachers and pirates who pillage and plunder the great oceans for profit and greed. Support Sea Shepherd today to ensure our campaigns continue to be strong and effective, and our oceans are alive and healthy for future generations!

Captain Paul Watson Honored in Paris with Jules Verne Award
Captain Watson makes history again! Throughout his career, Captain Paul Watson has drawn great inspiration from fellow ocean explorer, the legendary Captain Jacques Cousteau. So it was only fitting that Captain Watson was honored in Paris recently as the second recipient ever of the prestigious Jules Verne Award in the category of Environmentalists and Adventurers, second only to the iconic Captain Cousteau himself.

Sea Shepherd France President Lamya Essemlali was on hand to accept the award on behalf of Captain Watson, along with Advisory Board member and long-time Sea Shepherd friend, Richard Dean Anderson, who was also honored. Read Essemlali’s review of the ceremonies…

Sea Shepherd at the Heart of a Japanese Scandal
Last year, Captain Paul Watson was one of the first individuals to call attention to the fact that $30 million USD in Tsunami Relief Funds that was donated from well-meaning individuals around the globe to help victims of Japan’s earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear crisis were instead being funneled to support Japan’s dying whaling industry and to wage a public relations and legal war against Sea Shepherd.

Now it seems critics inside and outside of Japan are finally questioning the gross misuse of funds. Get the full story on the scandal here…

Australia's Sharks Under Attack... Again
On the heels of a controversial move to kill any sharks caught swimming too close to Western Australia’s (WA) beaches, the region’s government is again putting the bite on shark populations, already down by as much as 90% worldwide.

In an ill-conceived plan, WA is negotiating with China to supply shark fin that has been “green-stamped” as having come from “sustainable sources.” But there’s no such thing as sustainable shark fin, and to suggest such a thing is to undermine all the work being done by Sea Shepherd and other conservation groups around the globe to safeguard imperiled sharks from extinction.

Learn how you can help sharks in WA fend off yet another attack…

Xavier Rudd Helps Sea Shepherd's Education and Outreach Efforts with Spirit Bird Tour
Australian musician and avid Sea Shepherd supporter Xavier Rudd's Spirit Bird tour is underway, and local Sea Shepherd chapters will hold education and outreach tables at many of his North American shows!

If you have never heard the enchanting and uplifting sounds of Xavier Rudd's music, you are in for a treat! He ties in aboriginal themes with environmentalism, creating a sound and energy like no one else. His newest album, Spirit Bird, even features a song called Creating a Dream where he pays homage to Captain Watson's vision.

efforts to defend ocean wildlife worldwide!

Zero tolerance. Zero cruelty. Zero kills. That is our mission this year in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary as we go up against the illegal Japanese whalers for the ninth season with our Antarctic Whale Defense Campaign aptly dubbed Operation Zero Tolerance. Our Antarctic campaigns have saved the lives of more than 3,600 whales and this year, with the addition of a new vessel and our best tactics yet, we plan to be even more effective than we have ever been!

The time is now! Stand strong with Sea Shepherd and help us fund our campaigns to defend the oceans from the poachers and pirates of greed. Your investment is an investment in the future. Together we are saving lives and protecting biodiversity in our oceans. Thank-you!

SEA SHEPHERD E NEWSLETTER 5OKT12

FROM Sea Shepherd, reports on the coming Japanese whaling season in the Southern Oceans Sanctuary, the hysteria and slaughter of sharks, and the fight against corporate weakening of CITES, a way cool video of why Sea Shepherd defends our oceans and a commentary from Captain Paul Watson......

Dear Friend of Sea Shepherd,

Countdown to Operation Zero Tolerance: The crew is mobilizing and the ships are completing preparations. The Steve Irwin is in Williamstown, VIC. The Sea Shepherd air crew has all systems go for helicopters and drones. The Bob Barker is in Sydney, NSW. The Brigitte Bardot is completing repairs in Hawaii. The Sam Simon is in an undisclosed location and ready for the campaign. This could be the campaign that ends whaling permanently in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary!

We have zero tolerance for whaling and other violent acts against the oceans and their inhabitants. Your help is critical to our ability to carry out our mission. Please support our efforts today, so we can defend, conserve, and protect marine life for future generations to come.

Sinking the Japanese Whalers — Economically
Time and time again, we have said our goal is to sink the Japanese whaling fleet economically, believing that if we attack their bottom line, the war on whales in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary will eventually end. Now, the word is out — straight from the Japanese whalers themselves!

According to the New York Times, the Institute for Cetacean Research (ICR), a front for Japan’s commercial whaling industry, is citing Sea Shepherd’s interventions for its catastrophic financial losses in Antarctica last season. Find out how many millions of dollars we cost them…

CITES — A New Hope?
The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) is an agreement between governments that aims to ensure the international trade in wild animals and plants does not threaten their very survival. But over the years, special interests have used their powerful associations with CITES to skew issues and lobby against protection for sharks, bluefin tuna and other species at risk of being exploited for financial gain.

Thanks to Sea Shepherd, this reign of corruption may soon be nearing an end. Get the details…

Fear and Hysteria Spawn War on Sharks
in Western Australia
Did you know more people are killed by vending machines each year than by shark attacks? It’s true! Unfortunately, due to mass hysteria over the tragic deaths of five surfers in the last year off the coast of Western Australia, government officials have declared war on sharks and they are killing any sharks unlucky enough to be found along the region’s beaches — including the endangered and supposedly protected Great White shark!

Learn more about this issue and how we can safeguard surfers, swimmers, and divers in a non-lethal way...

The Ladies Will Love This!
Our female supporters can show their love for our cause in this new women's cut Jolly Roger T-shirt! The new fitted T-shirt proudly displays our popular Jolly Roger logo, which was created by artist Geert-Jan Vons and co-designed by Captain Paul Watson.

Ever wonder what the Jolly Roger logo symbolizes? It stands for the good pirates (Sea Shepherd) who pursue the bad pirates (driftnetters, whalers, sealers, poachers, etc). The logo's intricate design includes a shepherd's staff, which represents the way Sea Shepherd guards and protects our oceans, and Neptune's trident, which signifies our interventionist approach. The skull represents the death that humans inflict on the creatures of the sea. It is further detailed with a dolphin and whale "yin yang" symbol to represent the natural balance of the oceans when free from human interference. Purchase the Women's Sea Shepherd Jolly Roger T-shirt today!
All proceeds from Sea Shepherd e-Stores support our
efforts to defend ocean wildlife worldwide!

There is no greater legacy that can be imagined, no cause more noble, no campaign more important than the protection and conservation of the diversity of life in our oceans. I am part of that legacy and so are you. We all are, if we so choose to be.

No matter the challenges we face or the setbacks we endure, one thing is certain - we will not rest until whaling ends. No compromise. No tolerance. No doubt. Please support our actions to defend and conserve ocean wildlife worldwide. Thank-you!

For the oceans,

Captain Paul Watson
