War Is Not the Answer 11SEP14

WAR IS NOT THE ANSWER, and there is a better way to deal with the terrorism of isis and a host of other groups and organizations in the Middle East, Maghreb and Arabian peninsula. Here is My representative's (Rep Gerry Connolly D VA) inadequate response to my e mail to him opposing expanding US Military involvement in Iraq and Syria. He voted to support Pres Obama's war, to support the military-industrial complex and other war profiteers. He voted to sacrifice American lives and our tax dollars. He deliberately lies when he says his isis and the other terrorist groups are a real threat to the security of the U.S. The are a threat to corporate America's profit margins from the business they conduct with the brutal, dictatorial, undemocratic regimes of our false "allies" in these regions. This is followed by Jim Wallis' post on +Sojourners against this march to war.....

September 19, 2014

Thank you for contacting me regarding the threat posed by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and similarly violent terrorist groups. I appreciate your interest in this issue, and your views are important to me.
The President has laid out a bold and decisive strategy to lead a multilateral operation designed to degrade and ultimately destroy ISIL, and I believe Congress has a constructive and collaborative role to play in this effort. This is a threat the United States must address. ISIL's program of genocide is undermining the stability of Iraq, threatening our partners in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region, and reversing gains made by moderate forces in Syria against a brutal dictator.
In response to the President's consultation with Congress on the deepening crisis in Syria, almost one year ago to the day, I introduced a resolution authorizing the President to carry out airstrikes against the Assad regime. In that instance, Congress demurred. I believe the President will now find bipartisan support in Congress for airstrikes in Iraq and Syria. This tactic has thus far effectively bolstered our partners on the ground, protected American assets, and facilitated humanitarian missions.
I expect a robust debate regarding the plan to arm opposition forces in Syria. It may prove to be the most challenging task we face, moving forward. As the President stated, we must remain vigilant against terrorist threats to America and its allies. As a senior member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, I will be monitoring this issue closely to ensure that actions taken by the United States are in the best interest of our national security.
Once again, thank you for expressing your concern on this very important issue. I appreciate hearing from you. For more information on my views on other issues, please feel free to visit my website at http://connolly.house.gov. I also encourage you to visit the website to sign up for my e-newsletter.

War Is Not the Answer

That was a bumper sticker Sojourners published at the outset of the Iraq war more than a decade ago. American church leaders had not only opposed the war but offered an alternative: "An Alternative to War for Defeating Saddam Hussein, A Religious Initiative." We not only presented it to Colin Powell’s personal council and Tony Blair, but also printed full-page ads in every major British newspaper the day before their Parliamentary debate and vote on the war. The U.K.’s Secretary of State for International Affairs, Clair Short, told me the only real alternative on the table in their Cabinet meetings was “The American church leaders’ plan,” which, she said, was seriously discussed. U.S. and U.K. leaders showed they were drawn to an alternative plan to war that would remove any weapons of mass destruction that Saddam Hussein might have had (which he did not) and even to ultimately remove him from power but without going to war. Pope John Paul II was also opposed to the potential war. Both the Vatican and the American church leaders warned that the potential costs of a war in Iraq could include increasing the scope and threats of international terrorism. ISIS is that sad prophecy come true; the habit of war prevailed.

Sojourners magazine Jan.-Feb. 2003 cover
I have always believed that any alternative to war must still address the very real problems at hand — just in a more effective way. To say that “war is not the answer” is not only a moral statement but also is a serious critique of what doesn’t work; wars often fail to solve the problems and ultimately make them worse. War has to answer to metrics, just as more peaceful alternatives do. The war in Iraq was a complete failure with enormous human and financial costs; ISIS is now one of the consequences.
Yesterday I spoke at a very creative non-partisan conference at the American Enterprise Institute on finding a new approach to end poverty. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw all the press cameras — until I realized they were only there to cover Dick Cheney’s news conference on how America should respond to ISIS in the room next door. Dana Milbank in The Washington Post said:
“It was just like the good old days. Scooter Libby was in the front row. Paul Wolfowitz was in the second. And on the stage was Dick Cheney, beating the drums of war.”
Yet again, Cheney railed against President Obama in a “pre-buttal” to the president’s speech coming that night. Cheney’s strategy, along with others like John McCain and Bill Kristol, calls for serial American invasions and continued occupations in every Middle Eastern country where there is conflict — one after another. Milbank concluded, “In summary: War, war and more war.”
I agree with Pope Francis when he said it is legitimate to stop an unjust aggressor:
"I underscore the verb 'to stop'. I am not saying 'bomb' or 'make war', but 'stop him.' The means by which he can be stopped must be evaluated. Stopping the unjust aggressor is legitimate."
This morning, former National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski agreed, saying the war 10 years ago “was a monumental disaster for which we are still paying.”
President Obama spoke to the “unique brutality” of ISIS, destroying all who are in their path, including children; turning women into sex slaves; perpetrating genocide against religious minorities, including Christians; beheading their enemies,; and turning foreigners into hardened fighters who could bring their terror back to other countries around the world. ISIS clearly revels in its own brutality by eagerly putting it all up on YouTube. I would add religious “blasphemy” to the crimes of ISIS, doing their proud brutal deeds in the name of God — which is an utter offense to all people of faith.
That the world, including the United States, needs to respond decisively to the real threats of ISIS is beyond dispute, but the practical and moral question is — how? Let’s remember the principle that alternatives to war must answer the questions that war promises to answer — but in a better way.
I give President Obama credit for wanting to respond in a “different way” than the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. His strategy will focus on air strikes but also relies on supporting and training Middle East partners on the ground, which will be necessary to defeat a force already as powerful as ISIS.
But who those partners will be is still a huge question at this point. All our potential allies are on one side or the other of the 1,400-year-old Sunni-Shia sectarian conflict, which produces very different visions for the future of the Middle East. Air strikes will always kill innocent civilians, which will fuel the hatred of the outside superpower and be used to recruit more terrorists. And the 1,600 American troops who will soon be in Iraq will have to stand with their “boots” someplace, which will be more likely “on the ground” than in hotel rooms and offices.
To forge solutions to conflict that are an alternative to the endless and failed habits of war demands a much stronger set of other strategies — which the White House has yet to fully understand or embrace. I applaud the president for seeking a multi-national coalition and a more international approach. But that could have begun with the United Nations, where the U.S. will chair the Security Council in just two weeks — rather than taking the American plan to the U.N. for support. Strong U.N. leadership could both recruit more Middle East partners and help take the United States out of the role of the most hated target of Islamic fundamentalism.
Aggressive diplomacy and the willingness to impose crippling economic sanctions are both necessary if we are ever to find alternatives to war. For example, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Emirates have yet to be held accountable — for their enormous inequalities and injustices that have spawned terrorism and for their export of hateful ideologies and funding support for jihadist groups. Stifling money for terrorist groups must extend to any and all nations, businesses, or organizations with any connections to the flow of that lethal money.
Ultimately, we won’t see an end to our “war on terrorism” without dealing with the underlying causes, and not just targeting the consequences of growing terrorism. We must address the world of oil that the West has created, that has literally defined nations, changed geography, and institutionalized the injustices and hypocrisies that breeds the grievances of terrorism. Having justified the unjust structure of that oil world to accommodate our addiction to fossil fuels has produced both a profound threat to our planet and the rise of an angry terrorism that threatens our own children. We must address the fact that 60 percent of the Middle East population is under 30 years of age, and many of them are unemployed, uneducated, aggrieved, and angry young men — too easily drawn to the rhetoric of revenge. To overcome terrorism we must address the grievances that give rise to it and are exploited by hateful extremists.
Again, we must address all of these causes. War and more war will not be able to solve any of it.

Sign the petition: Extend emergency unemployment insurance & New report extols benefits of unemployment compensation. Pelosi: No budget deal without UI 7&5DEZ13

THE US House has not reached an agreement on the federal budget, and the negotiations right now have not included an extension of unemployment benefits for the long term unemployed. gop and tea-bagger obstructionist are refusing to even consider extending these benefits while we are still deep in this recession, a 7% unemployment rate is not a healthy economy nor a vibrant job market. If an extension is not passed then 1.3 million unemployed will loose their unemployment benefits as of 28 DEC 13 and another 1 million will loose their benefits early next year. Please click the link to contact your Representative and tell them to vote against any budget agreement that doesn't include an extension of unemployment benefits. Time is short, Congress adjourns this week for Christmas and will not return until after 1 JAN 14. See more on this at THE NO HOLDS BARRED WAR ON CHRISTMAS & Can A Scrappy Gang Of Republicans Save Christmas For A Million Unemployed People? 6DEZ13 http://bucknacktssordidtawdryblog.blogspot.com/2013/12/the-no-holds-barred-war-on-christmas.html
Here is my letter to my Representative, Gerry Connolly D (11th) VA
Over 2 million Americans will lose their unemployment insurance soon unless Congress acts now. Make sure an extension of the Emergency Unemployment Insurance program is in any budget deal. No extension, no budget deal, it is as simple as that and I expect you to stand against those in the House who would abandon the long term unemployed. I am a member of the Elizabeth Warren faction of the Democratic Party and I expect you to support and vote for a Bold Progressive agenda.

George Zornick at The Nation has a dramatic update on the ongoing budget negotiations unfolding on Capitol Hill:
Thursday morning, House Democrats held a deeply emotional hearing featuring several long-term unemployed Americans who pleaded with Congress to extend the expiring federal Emergency Unemployment Insurance program, which provides benefits to jobless Americans after their state benefits run out.

The program has been extended or modified eleven times since it was created in 2008 as the economy cratered, but is set to expire at the end of 2013—meaning 2.15 million long-term unemployed would lose benefits entirely.

The looming House-Senate budget negotiations have been viewed as the best vehicle to extend the EUC program—and Thursday’s hearing ended with some dramatic news from House minority leader Nancy Pelosi. She made it clear that Democrats couldn’t support any agreement that didn’t have an EUC extension, either in the actual budget or as a separate piece of legislation.
Please join with Daily Kos and The Nation by sending an email to your member of the House, telling him or her to make sure an extension of the Emergency Unemployment Insurance program is included any budget deal. We can provide the crucial grassroots support Nancy Pelosi needs to make sure over two million Americans keep their unemployment benefits.

This is a fight we can actually win, as Zornick explains:
Meanwhile, a senior Democratic Senate aide close to the budget negotiations confirmed to The Nation that a EUC extension is still very much in the mix. Senator Murray, who is leading the negotiations for Democrats, “continues to push for this and it remains an open item as the negotiations continue.”

Details of a possible agreement have been leaking out in recent days, though there is no mention of the EUC program either way. The agreement is sure to be fragile, however, given the spending levels and federal pension changes rumored to be included—meaning that every last vote will be crucial in the House. That’s what makes Pelosi’s pledge so notable.

Additionally on Thursday morning, House Speaker John Boehner told reporters he would be “willing to take a look” at a long-term unemployment insurance extension.
Please click here to send an email to your member of the House of Representatives, telling him or her to make sure an extension of the Emergency Unemployment Insurance programs is included in the upcoming budget deal. There are over two million Americans who will thank you if you do.

Keep fighting,
Chris Bowers, Daily Kos

New report extols benefits of unemployment compensation. Pelosi: No budget deal without UI

Whoa--strong pledge from Pelosi just now: "We cannot sign a budget agreement that does not include unemployment insurance."
@gzornick
It's encouraging to see this bit of pushback against would-be austerity measures. When a budget agreement was signed off on in early 2011, however, the federally funded Emergency Unemployment Compensation was included but with 26 weeks of extensions hacked out of it. Partly as a consequence, only 34 percent of the nation's 4.1 million long-term unemployed people are now receiving checks under EUC, a program specifically designed to financially assist those who cannot find work after 27 weeks or more without a job. The other 66 percent are flat out of luck. If EUC is not renewed by Dec. 28, when the program expires, 1.3 million long-term unemployed Americans will lose their average $269 a week from the government. And in 2014, another 3.6 million Americans who would have become eligible for EUC will not receive its benefits.
As Sarah Ayres points out:
This is because unemployment benefits are not just good for workers; they are also good for the economy. By putting money into the pockets of people who will spend it, unemployment benefits boost demand, spur economic growth, and create jobs. In fact, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office has found that unemployment benefits are one of the most effective fiscal policies to increase economic growth and employment. Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Analytics, has found that every $1 spent on unemployment insurance grows the economy by $1.55. All these dollars circulating through the economy create jobs. According to an Economic Policy Institute analysis, extending emergency unemployment benefits would create 310,000 additional jobs in 2014.
Nine out of the 11 times the EUC has been renewed since it was first enacted in June 2008, Republican lawmakers have resisted. Their essential argument: unemployment compensation makes people lazy. In other words, with just one job opening available for every three job seekers, Republicans say Get a Job! Meanwhile, the Council of Economic Advisers and Department of Labor have published a new report, The Economic Benefits of Extending Unemployment Benefits. Among its findings:
• Including workers’ families, nearly 69 million people have been supported by extended UI benefits, including almost 17 million children • In 2012 alone, UI benefits lifted an estimated 2.5 million people out of poverty [...]
• Failing to extend UI benefits would put a dent in job-seekers’ incomes, reducing demand and costing 240,000 jobs in 2014.
• Estimates from the Congressional Budget Office and JP Morgan suggest that without an
extension of EUC GDP will be .2 to .4 percentage points lower.
• In 2011, CBO found that aid to the unemployed is among the policies with “the largest
effects on output and employment per dollar of budgetary cost”
The official unemployment rate of 7.3 percent is higher now than it has been at any time in past recessions when extended unemployment compensation has been removed.

Cutting Social Security benefits....chained cpi 8MAR13

I signed on as a citizen supporter of the Grayson-Takano letter in the US House a while ago, and I have e mailed my Rep, Gerry Connelly D VA a couple times. Today I called because of the e mail I received from the PCCC and the article By Richard Eskow in HuffPost

A President Who'll Cut Social Security - And Liberals Who Love Him Too Much 8MAR13 http://bucknacktssordidtawdryblog.blogspot.com/2013/03/a-president-wholl-cut-social-security.html

.....

Make no mistake, the White House is putting Social Security benefit cuts on the table. President Obama told NBC, "As you know, one of the proposals we made was something called Chained CPI."
National Organization for Women leader Terry O'Neill explained the president's benefit cuts during a briefing for PCCC members this week.
"The Chained CPI [which cuts cost of living adjustments]... is a stealth cut in Social Security benefits. It would start reducing benefits for seniors immediately, and it would be particularly harsh for the most vulnerable of us which are very very disproportionately women." The Nation reports it would "cut Social Security benefits $1,000 per year."
Can you call Representative Gerald Connolly and ask him to sign on to the Grayson-Takano letter against Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid benefit cuts?
(Click here to listen to the national briefing, or download a podcast.)
Our momentum grew even bigger this week as PCCC members held local events at congressional offices across the nation.
They delivered the names of thousands of local endorsers of the letter in Congress by Reps. Alan Grayson (D-FL) and Mark Takano (D-CA), promising to "vote against any and every cut to Medicare, Medicaid, or Social Security benefits."
Events led by PCCC members have resulted in numerous Members of Congress joining our cause -- and our supporters in Congress have grown from 2 to 30 in recent weeks! Many offices have also held impromptu meetings with PCCC members!
Can you help our momentum grow by calling Rep. Connolly and asking him to sign on to the Grayson-Takano letter?
House Democrats are needed to pass any deal. Every new signature on this letter gives Nancy Pelosi leverage to go into the negotiating room and say, "We don't have the votes for benefit cuts." Please help make that happen.
Thanks for being a bold progressive.

As Alan Simpson Puts President on the Defensive, House Dems Must Hold the Line & SIGN THE HOUSE'S GRAYSON-TAKANO LETTER 20FEB13

alan simpson is a worn out, played out, loud mouthed bourgeois pig. He is the obnoxious mouthpiece for the overtly greedy rich and corporations who are fighting to protect the life of entitlement they have grown used to over the past few decades and who feel they have absolutely no obligations or responsibilities to society and the nation as a whole. To maintain their wealth, and to increase it, they expect the government to keep in place their entitlement programs, no taxes on capital gains, tax subsidies for outsourcing, tax breaks for  profitable investments. They expect the government's corporate welfare programs to be maintained and even expanded at the expense of the rest of us. They were expecting an expanded plutocracy with the election of mitt romney. Now they are resorting the manipulating the gop / tea-bagger controlled House to blackmail the country with sequestration. There is no way we can allow President Obama and congressional Democrats to give in. Chained-CPI for Social Security must be rejected, remove the cap on Social Security taxes to maintain the program. DO NOT raise the retirement age. Medicaid and Medicare can not be cut, adequate funding for these programs must be maintained, and the eligibility age must not be raised. Institute means testing and adopt the Pentagon's drug procurement program to help control cost. Protect the social safety net and funding for government programs for the 99%. IGNORE alan simpson's big mouth. Let Pres Obama know you expect him to keep Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid off the budget negotiating table by becoming a citizen sponsor of the House's Grayson-Takano letter http://act.boldprogressives.org/survey/survey_ss_grayson/?rd=1&source=e3-dem-don&t=2&referring_akid=12071.177676.boYG6k#fullletter and demand your Rep sign it http://www.house.gov/representatives/find/
From HuffPost, and my letter to my Rep, Gerry Connelly D VA at the end of this post....

Alan Simpson, along with Erskine Bowles, represents a well-funded cadre of spokespeople who are only willing to present a narrow band of corporate- and billionaire-friendly economic policies. There's just one approach in their world, one which Simpson and Bowles reiterated just this week: Medicare and Social Security benefit cuts for seniors and the disabled and the gutting of middle-class tax breaks, paired with further tax reductions for corporations and the wealthiest Americans.
This cynical agenda is all that Simpson represents. If he brings anything else to the table, it isn't immediately visible. He lacks subject matter knowledge in any of the fields a person must understand to speak knowledgeably on budget issues. He's not an expert in finance, economics, health care, or social welfare.
Instead, Simpson has demonstrated an embarrassing lack of expertise in the topics he speaks about. That can be seen in his video confrontation with activist Alex Lawson, and it can be inferred from his refusal to publicly debate any of his opponents - or even to acknowledge the many budget solutions which are more popular and more practical than his own (but which are less corporate- and billionaire-friendly).
The corporate government-slashing lobby has been extraordinarily effective, however, in positioning itself as the source of 'unbiased' wisdom, and its salespeople like Simpson as kindly, unbiased, and benificient elders.
Yesterday we had the extraordinary experience of hearing Simpson's words quoted with oracular gravity at a White House press briefing, by a journalist who didn't even bother rephrasing them in the form of a question. Simpson said the President must cut Medicare and Social Security, warning that if "he can't cut the mustard in the solvency of Social Security under honest appraisals of the trustees and he can't get a handle on automatic pilot rate of health care spending, he will have a failed presidency."
On Medicare, Simpson appears once again to be pushing for a ceiling on the total amount the program can spend each year. In other words, he's not interested in solving our health care cost problems (which would inconvenience wealthy corporate healthcare interests). He just wants to see those costs shifted back onto hapless seniors.
And any "honest appraisals of (Social Security's) trustees" would also include more immediate solutions to the program's long-term funding issues, like raising the payroll tax cap. But that, too, would inconvenience Simpson's wealthy backers.
It's a sign of journalistic laziness that the question was even asked - or rather, since there was no actual question, that a reporter used a Presidential press conference as a platform for repeating Simpson's corporatist rhetoric. In our degraded discourse, that sort of thing is to be expected.
But why did Carney spend so much time defending the President against Simpson's attack by journalistic proxy? Why did Carney boast of the fact that the President has signed into law twice as many spending cuts as tax increases - at a time when the wealthy and corporations still pay historically low actual rates of taxation - instead of bemoaning that fact?
And why is the President of the United States on the defensive toward a minor Washington politician, long since retired, who is now a paid spokesperson for billionaires and corporations? .
Whatever the White House's motivations, it apparently can't be trusted to hold the line on these programs. Good thing the House Progressive Caucus feels differently. It released a letter today signed by 107 House Democrats, which included these words:
"A commitment to keeping the middle-class strong and reducing poverty requires a commitment to keeping Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid strong. We urge you to reject any proposals to cut benefits, and we look forward to working with you to enact approaches that instead rely on economic growth and more fair revenue-raising policies to solve our fiscal problems."
The letter explicitly urged the President to avoid the chained-CPI cut, which the letters' signers said they "deeply opposed."
What the signers did not do is explicitly pledge to vote against any agreement which includes the chained-CPI cut. They should. If 107 Democrats refuse to back a Grand Bargain, there's very little likelihood it will pass.
If the President is going to keep feeling defensive about - of all people - Alan Simpson, it's going to take some backbone to stop the chained-CPI cut. A "no" pledge from a large group of Democratic House members might be just the kind of backbone the country needs right now.

MY LETTER TO REP GERRY CONNELLY D VA
If you haven't done so already I am asking you to sign the Grayson-Takano letter to Pres Obama pledging to "vote against any and every cut to Medicare, Medicaid, or Social Security benefits -- including raising the retirement age or cutting the cost of living adjustments that our constituents earned and need." You need to stand firm against the gop / tea-bagger propaganda campaign being mouthed by alan simpson. They are blackmailing the nation with the threat of sequestration. You can not give in to blackmail, you can not pay ransom to the rich and corporate America with funds meant for the rest of us. Chained-CPI for Social Security must be rejected, remove the cap on Social Security taxes to maintain the program. DO NOT raise the retirement age. Medicaid and Medicare can not be cut, adequate funding for these programs must be maintained, and the eligibility age must not be raised. Inexcusable....TELL THE HOUSE NO EXCUSES, NO EXCEPTIONS, NO DELAYS PASS THE VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN ACT INTO LAW NOW 15FEB13

Justice in the life and conduct of the State is possible only as first it resides in the hearts and souls of the citizens.

- Plato

THE VAWA, Violence Against Women Act has been passed in the US Senate but is being held up in the US House. It is an outrage this bill has not been passed. The House failed to pass it last year, we can not allow that to happen again. Please sign this letter from members of the Senate to the House calling on them to pass the VAWA now, and then take the time to send an e mail to your Representative telling them to vote for the VAWA, find their e mail address here http://www.house.gov/representatives/find/
My e mail to my Rep, Rep Gerry Connolly D VA is below....

Domestic violence and abuse are inexcusable. And so was the House of Representatives' failure to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act last year.
Protecting the health and safety of American women should be a no-brainer, but some extreme elements in the House of Representatives are holding up this critical legislation because it adds protections to Native American and LGBT victims of domestic violence.
There are 24 new victims of domestic violence every minute.  An average of three women will be killed today by their partners.  It's long past time to bring the Violence Against Women Act back, and to take a stand against domestic violence.
Let's tell extremists opposing the Violence Against Women Act that the American people think they're dead wrong.
Thanks,
Senator Jeff Merkley

My e mail to Rep Connolly

Domestic abuse is inexcusable. And so was Congress’s failure to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) last year.

VAWA lapsed because some extremists objected to extending its protections to immigrants, Native Americans, and the LGBT community. But now it’s time to bring VAWA back -- and protect every American.

I’m raising my voice in support of the Violence Against Women Act because it’s time to fight back against domestic abuse. No excuses, no exceptions, no delays: PASS VAWA NOW!
