When Your Family Member Does The Unthinkable 1AUG12

THIS has to be a families worst nightmare. Here is a very good, compassionate piece from someone with first hand experience, from NPR.....

At 5:45 a.m. on Friday, July 20, Arlene Holmes woke to the sound of the telephone. On the line was a man from ABC News. There had been a shooting in Aurora, Colo., the man explained. Her 24-year-old son, James, was the suspect. Did she have a comment?
In the wake of a tragedy like the Colorado shooting, the families of victims must navigate a complicated emotional landscape. But so, too, must the families of those charged with the crimes, as they suddenly face all kinds of deeply disturbing questions.
"Is there something wrong with us that this could emerge from us? That someone capable of murder could emerge from our family?"
That, says David Kaczynski, was the question that hung over his family after his brother, Ted, was arrested as the Unabomber.
David had actually played a role in his brother's arrest. In 1996, he went to the FBI with his suspicion that his brother and the Unabomber might be the same man.
For months he and his wife, Linda, worked with them in secret; no other family member knew. And then came the moment that David Kaczynski dreaded, the moment he had to introduce to his mother the incredible idea that her oldest son could be a killer.
Kaczynski remembers driving to his mother's apartment in Schenectady, N.Y., and knocking on the apartment door. He remembers the way the look of happiness on her face slowly gave way to a look of concern, and then, several minutes into his rambling, elliptical explanation, a look of horror.
When he had finally finished, Kaczynski says, his mother got up from her chair, put her arms around his neck and lightly kissed him on the cheek. Then, he says, she told him three things: That she knew this must be hard for him. That she knew he was a good man who loved his brother. That she knew David was wrong. She knew her oldest son, Ted, knew how fragile he was, and she knew Ted wasn't capable of murder. When the FBI really looks into all this, she explained to Kaczynski, they would see the same thing.
"They're going to investigate this, and they're going to find out that Ted is completely innocent," Kaczynski remembers her saying. "This is all going to go away like a bad dream."
But it didn't.
'Beyond Words'
About a week after Kaczynski's mother sweetly kissed his cheek and explained that he was wrong, he and his mother found themselves sitting in a house surrounded by television camers, watching Ted's arrest on the news.
"My wife, Linda, my mother, Wanda, and I are in our house," Kaczynski says. "Paradoxically, we're kind of the focus of the world's attention, but you couldn't have felt more isolated than we felt at that moment."
To protect themselves from the media, the family had disconnected the phone and covered the windows with blankets. They were totally alone, had no idea if they would lose their jobs, if their friends would abandon them, if they would have to move and change their identities. Their most basic sense of themselves as a good and decent family had been shaken.
And so inside the house, Kaczynski says, instead of conversation there was mostly silence. "To some extent, what had happened was beyond words," he says.

For the eight days that his family was essentially under this media siege, and for many years after, Kaczynski says his family was plagued by a question — the same question that many of us find ourselves asking every time a mass murder occurs. Is it possible for such a terrible act to emerge from a normal family? Or does evil come from evil? That's the issue quietly being raised every time a family like this opens their mouths. Are you responsible, in some way, for unspeakable horror?
'We ... The Parents Of A Mass Murderer'
In 1982, Larry Robison brutally killed five people. The crime was incredibly ugly. One victim was a 6-year-old boy; another was maimed and decapitated.
At the time, his mother, Lois Robison, was a school teacher; so was her husband, Ken. She remembers talking to her husband the night of her son's arrest — how clear it was to him that the life they'd built toegether was now gone.
"He said, 'We will no longer be Lois and Ken Robison, the school teachers,' " Lois Robison says her husband told her. " 'We will be Lois and Ken Robison, the parents of a mass murderer.' "
But this was not a title that Lois Robison felt her family deserved. If the question these families face is — Are you responsible for evil? — from the perspective of Lois Robison, the answer was clearly no.
"If there was anything you could do to keep it from happening, we did it," she says. "We were in church every time the doors were open. We took our kids to Sunday school from the time they were born. Larry was in Scouts, the girls were in Scouts. Ken was a Scout leader."
And when, as a young man, her son Larry started having mental health problems, Robison says, she did everything she could to help him.
She had him hospitalized several times for his problems, but the institutions, she says, would never hold him longer than 30 days.
"I fought the state of Texas, I fought the county, I fought everybody to get him help," Lois Robison says.
At trial the state of Texas rejected the insanity defense, and Larry Robison was eventually put to death. But from Lois Robison's perspective, it was the mental illness, and not her son, that was responsible for those crimes. And this belief both neutralized her guilt and shaped her feelings about what it was that she should do next.
"We can crawl into a cave and pull a rock in after us," she says, "and just, you know, hibernate and stay away from the world. ... Or we can be up front and tell the truth and hope that it helps somebody in the future."
And so after her son was arrested, Robison started advocating for mental health issues. She went all over the country talking about access to care. "If I hadn't done that," she says, "I would have laid down and died."
For Most Families, A Silent Struggle
David Kaczynski made a similar choice. He didn't turn away; he stepped forward. His professional life is now defined by what happened with his brother. And while he says he's heartbroken about the pain his brother Ted caused, like Robison, he views the murderer in his family as mentally ill — schizophrenic — not evil.
A former social worker, Kaczynski speaks frequently about mental health issues and is executive director of a group that fights against the death penalty.
But most families who've found themselves in a similar position don't seem to settle the question that way. For whatever reason they turn in, not out, to struggle with the issue of whether they bear any responsibility for the crimes of their kin.
Kaczynski understands this struggle in a unique way; over the years he's made a habit of reaching out to other families in similar circumstances. Last year, after the shooting of Gabrielle Giffords, he contacted the lawyer for the family of Jared Lee Loughner. He says he also contacted the Cho family after their son, Seung-Hui, went on a rampage at Virginia Tech.
"I left a phone message for the sister, I think, some years ago," he says. "And Linda and I have talked about writing to the Holmes family as well, so we'll probably send them a letter, just to let them know that if they need someone to talk to, we're open to that."
Just days after the shooting, a lawyer for the Holmes family stood in front of a gaggle of reporters and, after reminding everyone that James Holmes had not yet been convicted of a crime, asked that the media respect the family's privacy.
Sixteen years ago, a lawyer for the Kaczynski family stood in front of a bank of microphones and essentially said the same thing. A little while later, David Kaczynski emerged from his house for the first time. The media was finally gone.
But the problem of guilt? Of what to think of yourself? Of what to do? It was only beginning.

Right-wing blog on Elizabeth Warren's viral video: 'I reach for my revolver' 27SEP11

ELIZABETH WARREN is being attacked by right wing extremist and fanatics, at least one of which has made reference to going for his gun in response her comments on class warfare and taxes. The hatred and suggestion of violence is reminiscent of the extremist comments, blog post and political campaign ads before Rep Gabrielle Giffords D AZ was shot and 6 innocent people were killed and 13 injured at a "Congress On Your Corner" event. The leadership of the gop and the tea-baggers have a responsibility to loudly, publicly condemn these comments. Elizabeth Warren Blasts GOP 'Class Warfare' Charge, Tax Cuts For The Rich (VIDEO) 22SEP11
This from Daily KOS....

Elizabeth Warren is really pissing off Wall Street and their pro-plutocrat allies in the right-wing media.
After a video of Warren talking about the deficit and the social contract went viral last week (see above), Rush Limbaugh, the Fiscal Times and Rich Lowrey all spent time attacking her. Now, Lowrey has decided to spend another column going after her, and places like the Daily Caller and Reason have piled on. There is also this gem from right-wing blog Wizbang:

Text version:
When I hear the word “contract” I reach for my revolver think of two unique definitions — formally, a legally binding mutual agreement made between two or more parties, or idiomatically, an attempt to hire an assassin to kill one or more of your enemies.
Warren's rapid ascent is scaring apologists for the war that Wall Street, big corporations and the uber wealthy are waging on the middle class. They want to make sure when anyone debunks their nonsense like Warren has, that person takes a big hit so that no one follows.
We're not going to let that happen. At Daily Kos, we're joining with CREDO Action to thank Elizabeth Warren for speaking the truth. She needs to know—and those who might follow in her footsteps need to know—that we have her back in this fight.

Gabrielle Giffords Returns To Congress To Vote On Debt Ceiling Deal (PHOTOS, VIDEO) 1AUG11

THANK GOD for Gabrielle Gifford's recovery and return to Congress. God Bless you Rep Gifford!!!!
WASHINGTON -- Seven months after she was shot in the head by a gunman in Tucson, Ariz., Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) made a surprise and emotional return to the House floor on Monday, casting a vote in favor of a bill to raise the nation's debt ceiling.
Giffords entered the chamber to sustained, standing applause, shaking hands with colleagues whom she had not seen since that January day. Her vote, a sideshow to the far more important and compelling personal drama, was in favor of the bill, which passed through the chamber by a margin of 269 to 161.
“I have closely followed the debate over our debt ceiling and have been deeply disappointed at what’s going on in Washington,” Giffords said, in a statement from her office. “After weeks of failed debate in Washington, I was pleased to see a solution to this crisis emerge. I strongly believe that crossing the aisle for the good of the American people is more important than party politics. I had to be here for this vote. I could not take the chance that my absence could crash our economy.”
Giffords' office tweeted word of her return to Washington after the vote had begun. And as she showed up on the floor -- smiling and with her hair cut short -- the attention of lawmakers drifted from the vote tally to her presence. Her office, in a statement, noted that in December 2009 and again in February 2010, she had objected to raising the nation's debt limit. This vote, the statement added, "was substantially different, with the strength of the U.S. economy hanging in the balance."
After the vote was cast, Giffords received multiple additional rounds of applause, as House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) called her "the personification of courage."
"Her presence here in the chamber as well as her service throughout her career in Congress, brings honor to this chamber," Pelosi said. "Thank you, Gabby."
Pelosi said she knew a Giffords visit "was possible" for a couple of days, but she urged the Arizona Democrat not to come unless she felt up for it.
"I did not encourage her to," Pelosi told reporters. "I told her first things first. But she was very eager to come."
Pelosi said she found out for sure that Giffords was returning from her chief of staff, John Lawrence, who is close with Giffords' husband Mark Kelly. When she saw Giffords come in, she said no words were exchanged as they greeted each other. Just "girl hugs," Pelosi said.
"Suffice it to say, it was one of the most thrilling moments to see this heroine return home, to the House. And to do so at such a dramatic time."
Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.), one of Giffords' closest personal friends and one of the people who escorted Giffords into the chamber, said she was beside herself when she heard the House erupt into cheers as Giffords walked in for the first time since the January 8 shooting.
"The reaction in the chamber was the most enthusiastic, exuberant, exhilarating -- I mean we were all crying -- thrilled -- you know, we just knew she would make a triumphant return," Wasserman Schultz said, becoming visibly upset.
"It always felt like there were so many doubters and skeptics, but never doubt Gabby Giffords' determination. This is the first of many votes she's going to pass."
Wasserman Schultz, who is also the Democratic National Committee chairwoman, said she knew "sometime yesterday" that Giffords' visit was happening. She said she spoke late last night to Giffords' husband, Mark Kelly, about the plan. Giffords had been following the debt limit vote from Tucson and "was ready to come and do the pivotal vote if she needed to," Wasserman Schultz said.
"At the end of the day, it was probably the most important vote we're going to cast this Congress. She wanted to make sure that her constituents were represented."
Vice President Joe Biden came to the Capitol to see Giffords, after being tipped off by Pelosi that she would be in attendance.
"I told her she was now a member of the cracked-head club like me, with two craniotomies," Biden told reporters. "You know what I mean? It was just so good to see her. But that's a private conversation."
Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-Ohio) found out about her return about an hour before the vote and helped to escort her into the chamber.
Assistant Democratic Leader James Clyburn (D-S.C.) said he found out that Giffords would show for the vote when he saw her, hinting that Pelosi and others in the know played it close to the vest.
"I just said, 'I love you, glad to have you back, great to see you,'" he said. "I only found out when I saw her. [It was] a little emotional."

Gabrielle Giffords Reminder To Be Part Of NRA Protest 28APR11 & H.R. 308: Large Capacity Ammunition Feeding Device Act

I still say we need to level the playing field and remove all restrictions on guns in all government offices so the politicians who are too cowardly to enact reasonable gun control laws and enforce them face the same risk the rest of us do. And I still want to know, can a person visiting NRA offices keep their gun on them or does it have to be checked at the door?
WASHINGTON -- With the National Rifle Association set to host its first conference since the shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) and 19 others in Tucson, gun control advocates are getting confrontational.
The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence's Educational Fund is placing full-page ads in Pittsburgh's two major papers -- the Post Gazette and the Times Review -- as a sober greeting for the estimated 70,000 gun lobby members expected to descend on the steel city. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (R) will be a featured speaker at the NRA's 140th annual meeting.
The ads are framed with a picture of a Tucson survivor on top and additional pictures of shooting victims from Columbine, Virginia Tech, and Pittsburgh. Below the images is a letter from victims' relatives, asking for support for a more comprehensive background check system for gun licenses. Some 105 family members of shooting victims signed the letter.
“We are not politicians. And we are not interested in a debate on the Second Amendment. In fact, some of us are longtime gun owners ourselves,” the ad reads. “We are the families of Americans who were murdered or injured by killers who should not have had guns. And we hope you’ll talk to us during your annual meeting in Pittsburgh.”
There are other protests planned for the NRA’s weekend gathering. Patricia Maisch, the Arizona woman who wrestled away alleged shooter Jared Loughner's ammunition clip during the Jan. 8 Tuscon shooting, will be demonstrating outside the convention hall. A billboard truck, meanwhile, will be driving around the convention inviting NRA executive director and CEO Wayne LaPierre to discuss shoring up legal loopholes.
An email seeking comment from the NRA was not immediately returned.
The Giffords shooting hasn’t resulted in a single change of policy. Gun control advocates have waited months since Tucson for a pubic forum in which they could petition or demonstrate against the gun lobby. Now, with the congresswoman set to attend her husband's space shuttle launch at Cape Canaveral on Friday, and with the NRA meeting this weekend, the issue has risen once again. Operatives working on gun control policy hope the two events will help influence the outcome of ongoing legislative talks with Congress and the Obama administration.

Fiancee Of Giffords Shooting Victim Works Hill As Gun Control Group Releases Chilling New Ad 12APR11

OPPOSED by the nra and so has very little chance of becoming law because the American public is too stupid to demand it and our government is to cowardly to pass a law banning high capacity gun magazines. Click the link on the video to tell President Obama to support and pass the law to ban assault clips. Keep that in mind when we have our next mass murder in a school or shopping plaza or mall or theater or wherever.....
WASHINGTON -- One of the nation’s most powerful gun-control advocacy groups is out with a new ad, and a symbolic new spokeswoman, in an effort to persuade Congress to outlaw magazines that allow up to 32 shots without reloading.
The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence put out the new spot on Tuesday morning calling directly on President Barack Obama to take a stand against high-capacity magazines -- the clip used by Jared Loughner, the alleged shooter of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) and 19 others in Tucson.
In conjunction with the ad’s release, the group is deploying a powerful new congressional liaison. Kelly O'Brien, fiancee of Gabe Zimmerman, the Giffords' staffer killed by Loughner, will be on the Hill Tuesday to endorse legislation sponsored by Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) and Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-N.Y.) banning high-capacity magazines.
O’Brien’s entrance into the debate over gun control legislation carries the same type of emotional undertones that accompanied the founding of the Brady Campaign itself. Once titled Handgun Control Inc., the group evolved into its current incarnation and namesake after James Brady, a top aide to President Ronald Reagan who was permanently disabled during an assassination attempt on Reagan.
O’Brien isn’t the only deliberately heart-tugging symbol of the new Brady campaign. The ad includes the silhouette of a young girl on a gunman’s printable, target practice sheet -- riddled, after 32 shots, with bullet holes in the heart and head.
“A magazine that allows a gun to fire 32 shots in 16 seconds is good for only one thing: killing a lot of people fast; and that’s something we can live without. Assault clips: they make everyone a target,” the script reads.

And yet, for all the chilling imagery and sentimental lobbying power, the Brady Campaign still faces a heavy lift. The Obama administration has convened a series of gun-policy meetings at the Justice Department to cover what, exactly, can be done to tighten current law and ensure that unstable purchasers don't get their hands on firearms. High-capacity magazines, sources tell The Huffington Post, have not come up during the talks.

Giffords Shootings: the Poisonous Fruit of Arizona's Vicious Politics 10JAN11

A insightful piece from AlterNet of the violence in Tucson. As much as some republicans want to deny any linking of political speech and this horrible event, one can not use words and images that suggest violence against those one opposes and then when it actually happens claim they were not advocating violence. People who spew hate, intolerance, violence, prejudice and rage across the internet through their blogs, pacs, press releases, campaign media, websites, e mails, mailings, radio and TV broadcast are responsible for the actions their words and images provoke. We can only hope the horror of these murders and woundings, the pain of the families and friends stays with us for a long time, as a check, to remind us of what can happen......
"The anger, the hatred, the bigotry that goes on in this country is getting to be outrageous," Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik said. "Arizona, I think, has become the capital.

Hundreds gathered Saturday night at a candlelight vigil at the Tucson University Medical Center, were U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and at least 10 other people were being treated for gunshot wounds in a savage attack that left six dead and the nation sickened and stunned.

The marchers held signs reading “Gabrielle we are with you,” “Tucson, we love you,” and “Peace will prevail.” Delayla Herrera was among the Tucson residents who joined in prayer for the dead and wounded and their families, even though she didn’t know any of them personally.

“It’s painful because I have a daughter and a son, and this is something I wouldn’t want to happen to them,” Herrera said. “There was an innocent child that died just for being there,” she added, referring to 9-year-old Christina Taylor-Green, who had gone with a neighbor to meet Giffords and was killed in the attack. Christina, recently elected to her school’s student council, was born on Sept. 11, 2001.

Giffords, 40, a three-term moderate Democrat from Tucson, was shot point-blank in the head Saturday morning when at least one assailant opened fire outside a Safeway where the congresswoman was meeting with constituents. Doctors said the bullet went through Giffords’s brain, leaving her in critical condition, but they expressed optimism about her chances of survival.

In addition to Christina, the dead included John Roll, the chief federal judge for the state of Arizona, and Gabe Zimmerman, a former social worker who served as Giffords' director of community outreach. Also killed were 76-year-old Dorthy Murray, 76-year-old Dorwin Stoddard, and 79-year-old Phyllis Scheck, investigators said.

A shaken President Barack Obama called the shooting an "unspeakable tragedy," adding: “Such a senseless and terrible act of violence has no place in a free society."

"I am sickened by the horrific attack in Tucson today and saddened by this senseless violence,"  Rep. Raul M. Grijalva, another Democrat from the Tucson area, said in a statement issued to the press. "This is a tragedy for Arizona, our nation, and our democracy. Gabrielle never let fear or intimidation prevent her from serving the people of Arizona. My thoughts and prayers are with Congresswoman Giffords, her husband Mark, her staff, all those who were injured, and their families."

Giffords, like Grijalva, narrowly won re-election in November against a Tea Party candidate furious over the passage of Obama’s health care law and Democrats' opposition to Arizona's anti-immigrant laws. According to the Associated Press, during the campaign, her opponent, Jesse Kelly, held fundraisers "where he urged supporters to help remove Giffords from office by joining him to shoot a fully loaded M-16 rifle." Kelly is a former Marine who served in Iraq and was pictured on his website in military gear holding his automatic weapon and promoting the event.

Fury over Giffords’s position occasionally turned violent, with her Tucson office vandalized and someone showing up at a recent gathering with a weapon Law enforcement officials said members of Congress reported 42 cases of threats or violence in the first three months of 2010, nearly three times the 15 cases reported during the same period a year earlier. Nearly all dealt with the health care bill, the Associated Press reported.

Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik blamed the shooting on the poisonous political rhetoric that has consumed the country, much of it centered in Arizona and fanned by a series of hard-line anti-immigration bills by lawmakers in the state, including SB 1070 and a new proposal to deny citizenship to the U.S.-born children of illegal immigrants.

"When you look at unbalanced people, how they respond to the vitriol that comes out of certain mouths about tearing down the government. The anger, the hatred, the bigotry that goes on in this country is getting to be outrageous," Dupnik said. "And unfortunately, Arizona, I think, has become the capital. We have become the mecca for prejudice and bigotry."

Giffords expressed similar concerns. In an interview after her office was vandalized in March, she referred to the animosity of conservatives, including Sarah Palin's decision to list her seat as one of the top "targets" in the midterm elections.

"For example, we're on Sarah Palin's targeted list, but the thing is, that the way that she has it depicted has the crosshairs of a gun sight over our district. When people do that, they have to realize that there are consequences to that action," Giffords said in the interview with MSNBC.

In the hours after the shooting, Palin issued a statement in which she expressed her "sincere condolences" to the family of Giffords and the other victims.”

Republican governor Jan Brewer, who signed SB 1070 into law last year and rode it to victory on Election Night, said: "My thoughts and prayers are with Congresswoman Giffords and her family, the Congresswoman's staff and their families, as well as the other victims of this senseless and cruel violence."

But those words seemed empty to Isabel Garcia, director of Derechos Humanos, a human rights coalition in Tucson. She said the dead and wounded were victims of the militarization of the border created by federal policies and the negative rhetoric that has accompanied it for decades.

Garcia echoed Dupnik’s comments, blaming the mass media for distributing “misinformation by hate groups creating fear in the community and eventually leading to more anti Mexican rhetoric and anti-human rhetoric.”

“It’s not enough to just grieve together,” Garcia said. “Their deaths cannot be in vain. This should wake us up to what our real responsibilities are, which is to care for one another regardless of color and class, sexuality and nationality.”

“I don’t agree that we should take a political advantage out of what has happened,” said Daniel Ortega, a local civil rights attorney who attended a vigil for the victims in Phoenix. “But this does send the message that people who try to serve the community in political positions are risking much more than we imagine.”

Both Democratic and Republican Latinos expressed their sorrow. “[Giffords] was a good friend and represented the Tucson district very well,” said Alberto Gutier, a Republican lobbyist who has worked with her in the past.

“We demand justice against the person responsible,” said Francisco Lara Garcia, a political science student in the University of Tucson, “but also for the tone of the political speech in the country to calm down. There is a political climate in the U.S. that promotes these attitudes and attacks against people that are simply fulfilling their role as Congress people.”

Police said the shooter, identified as 22-year-old Jared Loughner, was in custody. His motivation was not immediately known, but Dupnik described him as mentally unstable and possibly acting with an accomplice, and police were searching for a second man, said to be in his 50s.

Flashback: Giffords Was One Of Two AZ Reps Who Protested Brewer’s Medicaid Cuts 9JAN11

THIS is why Rep Giffords and Rep Grijalva were reelected to the House, Democrats in republican Arizona. The next time you hear the republican and tea-bagger hypocrites screaming about "Obama-care death panels" remind them of this...see below for more detail about how gov brewer and the Arizona state assembly could restore the Medicaid budget and provide the transplants for these people.  From ThinkProgress.....
As ThinkProgress previously reported, at least two Arizonans have died because they were denied funding for organ transplants that they were promised following Medicaid budget cuts championed by Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer (R). The governor called the transplants “optional.”
Horrified by the fact that 98 Arizonans were unable to get organ transplants they desperately needed, last month Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) joined with Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-AZ) to be the only two members of that state’s congressional delegation to write to Brewer and protest the lethal cuts to the state’s budget. Citing the case of Arizonan father David Hernandez, who will die if he doesn’t receive a lung transplant, the two reminded Brewer that she holds in her “hands the lives of these men and women“:
Various reports have quoted you and others in Arizona state government as describing transplants as “optional.” We strongly disagree with that characterization for medical procedures that determine the life or death of our fellow Arizonans.
We urge you — in the strongest possible way — not to solve the state’s budget problems on the backs of people such as David Hernandez. You hold in your hands the lives of these men and women of Arizona.
Following the letter, a spokesman for Brewer told local news station KGUN that he has yet to see a “Democrat come up a real, viable solution to help alleviate the budget and sustain the program.” Since that time, Steven Daglas — an Illinois State GOP Central Committeeman — has been writing to Brewer, presenting 26 possible funding solutions to the Medicaid problem that wouldn’t require any new revenues. He has yet to receive a response.

The State of Arizona approved life-saving organ transplants for 98 citizens.  On October 1st, Arizona reneged on that promise in the name of budget cuts.

These savings work out to $13,877.56 per human life (granting the state saves $1.36 million,
as reported by the Arizona Republic newspaper).
That roughly equals the $1.25 million Arizona tried spending earlier this year on a "squirrel bridge" expected to save 5 squirrels annually.  The squirrel bridge plan was cancelled only after receiving heavy media coverage and becoming a source of national ridicule.

The Issue:  Certain Arizona leaders maintain the state simply cannot afford to restore funding for these transplants.  That is NOT the case.

Straightforward funding solutions exist that require no new spending and cut no services or state obligations.

Not content leaving the fate of friends and family to chance, this website represents our collective voice of last resort.

About Us: We are 5 of the transplant patients caught in the middle of this, their family members and a friend.

26 Solutions to Restore Arizona Transplant Funding

1.) Use a portion of the settlement with AIG announced 12/22/10 - $2,143,829            Arizona will receive this amount as part of a 50-state settlement with AIG.
  • The $150 million settlement occurred 12/17/10 and became public 12/22/10.
  • Arizona’s share of this settlement is $2,143,829.
  • The full settlement is available by clicking here.
  • Arizona has not yet budgeted, allocated or received this money.
  • Massachusetts will place the funds in their state’s General Fund, AZ can too.

2.) Use a portion of unclaimed lottery player prize winnings - $6 million annually

At least $8.5 million in AZ lottery prize winnings go unclaimed every year.
  • 30% currently goes to the Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) fund.
  • 70% goes back to the AZ lottery prize fund for additional jackpots (per AZ statutes).
  • That 70% amounts to approximately $6 million every year – enough to restore transplant funding and address additional state needs at the Governor’s/Legislature’s discretion.

3.) Use a portion of savings from recently cancelled “squirrel bridge” - $1.25 million

Arizona planned to spend $1.25 million to save 250 squirrels, but won’t for 98 humans.

4.) Proposition 100 - $918 million FY 2011, $968 million 2012 & $1.06 billion 2013               Use a fraction of the $918 million in new FY 2011 tax revenue generated via Proposition 100, a 3-year, 1-cent sales tax hike approved by voters on 5/18/10.
  • $306 million of that must “be spent on health and human services and public safety” in FY 2011.
  • Transplant funding requires less than 1% of these additional revenues.
  • Politicians begged citizens for more tax money.  Citizens obliged.
  • Where has all the money gone?  What are all the other priorities the state feels necessary to address with the extra money instead of transplants?

5.) Unexpected Medicare December physician payment increase - $? million                Medicare physician pay was scheduled to be cut 23% beginning on December 1, 2010.
  • “Physician Payment and Therapy Relief Act of 2010” became law 11/30/10.
