Two years ago, Elizabeth Warren told David Corn that she'd rather stab herself in the eye than go back to Washington. On Tuesday, the Harvard Law professor and creator of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau ate her words, knocking off Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass) in one of the most closely watched—and at times nastiest—races of the 2012 cycle. Warren's win isn't just a case of a Democrat winning in Massachusetts; perhaps no candidate, President Obama included, inspired as much enthusiasm from progressives across the country. (She raised more money than any other Senate challenger in the country, much of it from out of state.) NBC News called the race shortly after polls closed in Boston.
Warren did it largely by sticking with what made her a political star in the first place—a fierce defense of the social contract, which led Republican to dub her "Matriarch of Mayhem" for her support of Occupy Wall Street:

For Republicans, a what-might-have-been remains the campaign finance truce Warren and Brown agreed to, which barred outside groups from buying TV ad time in the Bay State (per the agreement, any independent expenditure would have to be offset with a chartiable donation from the campaign). Given the extent to which Republican outside groups outspent Democratic groups in 2012, that bargain almost certainly ended up working in Warren's favor. It also meant that the fiercest attacks on Warren's character—hitting her, for example, for identifying as Cherokee at Harvard—came from Brown himself, eroding his largely positive image in Massachusetts.
For the 53-year-old Brown, this is likely not the end of his political career. With Sen. John Kerry rumored to be a top choice to replace retiring Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, there's a possibility a new seat could open up as early as December. In that case, Brown would be a heavy favorite for the Republican nomination, and with a comparably weak Democratic bench in the state, stand a decent shot at getting his old job back. Alternatively, with Democratic Gov. Deval Patrick term-limited after 2014, he might just opt to try his luck closer to home.

The principal chief of the Cherokee Nation is calling on Sen. Scott Brown, R-Mass., to apologize for a video that allegedly shows members of his staff imitating "stereotypical 'war whoops chants.'"
As WBUR's Curt Nickisch reported Tuesday for All Things Considered, Brown's supporters were filmed imitating "tomahawk chops" at a rally in Dorchester, Mass., over the weekend. The antics were apparently directed at Elizabeth Warren, Brown's Democratic opponent in the Senate race; Warren has been criticized for telling previous academic employers that she has Native American heritage.
Now, Brown and the GOP are under fire for supporters' actions that "goes far beyond what is appropriate and proper in political discourse," Cherokee Chief Bill John Baker said in a statement Wednesday.
"The use of stereotypical 'war whoop chants' and 'tomahawk chops' are offensive and downright racist," he said. "It is those types of actions that perpetuate negative stereotypes and continue to minimize and degrade all native peoples."

Early Tuesday, Brown said he didn't condone the action at the rally.
The Boston Globe has reported that two of the people in the video were Republican staffers, "including a member of Scott Brown's U.S. Senate office."
The New York Times reports that Warren called the video "appalling." A second video originally posted by the Chatham Republicans and reposted by the Blue Mass Group on Wednesday shows Brown speaking at a rally this summer about Warren's heritage as "war whoops" can be heard.
Baker said Brown's comments Tuesday didn't go far enough, and called for a full apology:

"We need individuals in the United States Senate who respect Native Americans and have an understanding of tribal issues. For that reason, I call upon Sen. Brown to apologize for the offensive actions of his staff and their uneducated, unenlightened and racist portrayal of native peoples."

Amanda Clinton, a spokeswoman for the Cherokee Nation, told NPR that so far no one from the Brown campaign has contacted her in response to the videos.

1) Draft Elizabeth Warren. In 2010, we led the successful grassroots effort to have Elizabeth Warren set up the new consumer protection agency.
This year, when she wasn't appointed to permanently lead it, we launched the Draft Elizabeth Warren for Senate campaign and raised over $100,000 for Warren before she even jumped into the race. Matt from our team worked with hundreds of volunteers across Massachusetts to hold Draft Elizabeth Warren house parties, showing her large grassroots support. And it worked! Elizabeth Warren is now seven points ahead of Scott Brown -- and thousands of members like you have donated a whopping $600,000 to her campaign!
2) Wisconsin recall victories: When Gov. Scott Walker attacked workers, we had to get involved. Members like you made over 380,000 calls to Wisconsin voters during the recall elections and worked 1,743 local volunteer shifts. With our friends at Democracy for America, we made 5 powerful TV ads that aired over 18,000 times -- plus radio ads, online ads, and robo-calls. Keauna from our team moved to Madison to assist local activists while the rest of us worked with volunteers across the nation. And we won! Together, we recalled two Republican senators and took away Gov. Walker's working majority in the Senate.

3) Awesome House candidates. Elizabeth Warren will need allies in Congress. We've been busy finding, vetting, and endorsing wonderful progressive candidates around the country, particularly those in competitive primaries for open seats. So far we've endorsed Eric Griego (NM-01), Annie Kuster (NH-02), Chris Donovan (CT-05) and Ilya Sheyman (IL-10), with more to come.  

When making endorsements, we pick candidates who are bold progressives with a competent campaign and a plan to win. Stephanie and Adam interview each candidate under consideration. Jason and Kari from our team help endorsed candidates find online directors and finance directors. In October, we sponsored a full-day media training for progressive candidates -- followed by a joint petition delivery to John Boehner's office the next day, which made national news. So far, members like you have donated $175,000 to our 4 endorsed House candidates!

4) Banxodus! We worked with Rep. Brad Miller (D-NC) on a bill making it easier to move your money from big Wall Street banks. Meanwhile, Kristiane from our team organized one of the first "Move Your Money" events in the nation, and every local TV station in Portland, Oregon showed up!
But we realized there was another obstacle to moving your money -- it's hard to find a good bank. So Ethan and Michael from our tech team built Banxodus.org, a great tool to help folks find good local banks. So far, 162,242 people have used Banxodus to search for a new bank in their area.
5) Saving Medicare. When Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) proposed ending Medicare, we worked with Ryan's Democratic opponent, Rob Zerban, to deliver over 65,000 signatures to Ryan's campaign office, creating local media pressure on Ryan. We also held other House Republicans accountable when they voted for Ryan’s plan. We launched a hard-hitting TV ad against Rep. Charlie Bass (R-NH). Bass now faces huge disapproval numbers and a strong election challenge from progressive favorite Annie Kuster.

6) Saving Social Security. When Lindsey Graham (R-SC) called for cuts to Social Security benefits, we launched a powerful TV ad featuring one of his constituents holding him accountable. When Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) passionately defended Social Security, we rewarded him with over 50,000 thank you notes -- and two of our retired members from Nevada flew to Washington to personally present them! Sen. Reid promised at our joint press conference to keep Social Security benefits "off the table" -- and he's stuck to his word.
7) Holding Democrats accountable. When the New York Times reported that President Obama put Social Security and Medicare benefit cuts on the table in negotiations, we needed grassroots pressure. Over 200,000 members pledged not to donate or volunteer for any Democratic politician who joined Republicans in cutting these vital benefits. Chicago-area members, including our press secretary Neil, personally delivered these pledges to Obama's headquarters.

The Associated Press, MSNBC, ABC, CBS, and others covered the event. MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell called us the “most effective progressive objectors” to benefit cuts and said our grassroots pressure was "actually helping the president's negotiating position" against Republicans. And we won! Social Security and Medicare benefits were not cut.
8) Fighting Wall Street immunity. Wall Street banks are pushing for a deal with the Department of Justice and state Attorneys General that would give the banks immunity -- for crimes that haven't even been investigated yet! So far, 85,000 members like you have become "citizen signers" of Rep. Tammy Baldwin's (D-WI) resolution opposing this deal. Conor and Jordan from our team worked the halls of Congress while thousands of us made phone calls. Together, these efforts increased Baldwin's co-sponsors from 27 to 70.
Meanwhile, Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway announced his opposition to the deal on our email list! And working with our partners at CREDO Action, we delivered petitions to Attorney General Kamala Harris in California. The next day, she announced she would oppose the deal. Momentum!

9) Saving the Internet! Congress is considering a bill that would end the Internet as we know it -- giving the government and private corporations the ability to take down websites without due process. This is a threat to free speech and innovation. We sponsored a joint petition with Reddit and over 100,000 people took action. Last week, a massive grassroots outpouring scuttled a planned vote and killed this proposal for the year. (It will be back next year -- and we'll keep fighting.)
10) PCCC growth: Holy cow, we've grown! This year, we hired a Chief of Staff (Amanda), three new members of our technology team (Ethan, Dheeraj, TJ), a new press team (Neil, Matt), new grassroots organizers (Kristiane, Jake), a new team of Capitol Hill organizers (Conor, Jordan, Robyn), and some great fellows! Plus, Michael (our very first employee!) took on a new role as Chief Information Officer, overseeing projects like Banxodus.org and other fun stuff coming in 2012!
We keep overhead costs incredibly low so member donations are used for organizing. We work out of our homes or coffee shops. When we travel, we ask local members for housing to reduce costs. (Thank you to all our wonderful hosts!)

Right-wing blog on Elizabeth Warren's viral video: 'I reach for my revolver' 27SEP11

ELIZABETH WARREN is being attacked by right wing extremist and fanatics, at least one of which has made reference to going for his gun in response her comments on class warfare and taxes. The hatred and suggestion of violence is reminiscent of the extremist comments, blog post and political campaign ads before Rep Gabrielle Giffords D AZ was shot and 6 innocent people were killed and 13 injured at a "Congress On Your Corner" event. The leadership of the gop and the tea-baggers have a responsibility to loudly, publicly condemn these comments. Elizabeth Warren is really pissing off Wall Street and their pro-plutocrat allies in the right-wing media.
After a video of Warren talking about the deficit and the social contract went viral last week (see above), Rush Limbaugh, the Fiscal Times and Rich Lowrey all spent time attacking her. Now, Lowrey has decided to spend another column going after her, and places like the Daily Caller and Reason have piled on. There is also this gem from right-wing blog Wizbang:

When I hear the word “contract” I reach for my revolver think of two unique definitions — formally, a legally binding mutual agreement made between two or more parties, or idiomatically, an attempt to hire an assassin to kill one or more of your enemies.

Warren's rapid ascent is scaring apologists for the war that Wall Street, big corporations and the uber wealthy are waging on the middle class. They want to make sure when anyone debunks their nonsense like Warren has, that person takes a big hit so that no one follows.
We're not going to let that happen. At Daily Kos, we're joining with CREDO Action to thank Elizabeth Warren for speaking the truth. She needs to know—and those who might follow in her footsteps need to know—that we have her back in this fight.

Elizabeth Warren Blasts GOP 'Class Warfare' Charge, Tax Cuts For The Rich (VIDEO) 22SEP11

POLITICAL correctness may require candidates to say the Democrats aren't waging class warfare. The truth is the repiglicans and tea-baggers started this round of class warfare right after the election of President Obama, and they have been waging it against the poor, the retired, the working class and the middle class in America. This is class warfare, it is a battle to stop our Republic turning into a plutocracy, to stop the nations descent to Third World status. It is class warfare against the gross economic inequality in this country, the shameful increase in the number of Americans, especially children, in poverty. It is class warfare against the gop / tea-baggers plans to destroy the social safety net and Social Security and the insatiable greed and lust for power of corporate America. So this is class warfare, and the repiglicans and tea-baggers are on the wrong side.

Elizabeth Warren, Democratic Senate candidate in Massachusetts and former White House financial reform adviser, blasted Republicans at an appearance In Andover last month for accusing Democrats of engaging in "class warfare."
"I hear all this, you know, 'Well, this is class warfare, this is whatever,'" Warren said. "No. There is nobody in this country who got rich on his own -- nobody."
Republican lawmakers have criticized President Barack Obama in recent weeks for engaging in "class warfare." House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) argued in an op-ed last month that the president was “anti-business, hyper-regulatory [and] pro-tax” and “fueled by efforts to incite class warfare."
House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) had a similar criticism after Obama unveiled his new deficit reduction plan this month, which features a proposed tax on millionaires, saying “Class warfare isn’t leadership.”
In Andover, Warren went on to discuss the "social contract" and how it benefits everyone:

“You built a factory out there? Good for you. But I want to be clear: you moved your goods to market on the roads the rest of us paid for; you hired workers the rest of us paid to educate; you were safe in your factory because of police forces and fire forces that the rest of us paid for. You didn’t have to worry that marauding bands would come and seize everything at your factory, and hire someone to protect against this, because of the work the rest of us did. “Now look, you built a factory and it turned into something terrific, or a great idea? God bless. Keep a big hunk of it. But part of the underlying social contract is you take a hunk of that and pay forward for the next kid who comes along.”

Democrats have fought back against the "class warfare" charges by drawing attention to the dramatic cuts that Republicans have proposed to programs benefiting low- and middle-income Americans.
Obama disputed the claim during a speech on Monday, saying his newest plan "is not class warfare. It’s math."
Warren -- who formally entered the Senate race less than two weeks ago -- currently has a slight edge over her competitor, Republican Scott Brown, according to a recent poll by the Democratic-affiliated firm Public Policy Polling.
Her comments were captured on video and posted to YouTube by an individual who claims not to be involved with Warren's campaign, according to Talking Points Memo.
