The Slaughter has Begun in the Ferocious (Faeroe)Isles from SEA SHEPHERD 8APR11

THERE has to be something mentally wrong with the majority of the people of the Faeroe Islands and Denmark because sane people do not take pleasure in clubbing and stabbing and mutilating another living creature. It is probably a good thing the people of the Faeroes are on such remote islands, away from civilization, because God only knows what they would do to other humans, especially ones who are different from them, if they lived anywhere else. From Sea Shepherd.....

The Slaughter has Begun in the Ferocious Isles

Slaughter has begun in the Ferocious IslesThe barbarian butchers of the Danish Protectorate of the Faeroe Islands have begun their ghastly slaughter early this year with the bloody slaughter of 60 defenseless pilot whales. In a world where civilized nations come to the rescue of stranded whales, the one place on the planet that demonstrates no mercy is this group of islands situated between Scotland and Iceland.
Sea Shepherd Conservation Society will be taking our ships to the Faeroes this summer to once again intervene to defend the whales from the thugs who slash, stab, and club these beautiful socially complex, sentient creatures.
Not all the Faeroese are heartless, however. A few brave souls are speaking out in opposition to their sadistic countrymen, and one of our supporters in the Faeroes sent us the photos in this update this morning. The supporter who sent these photos commented,  “I wish that Sea Shepherd was here. The killing was not quick and some whales took one to two minutes to die…terrible to watch.”
Slaughter has begun in the Ferocious IslesSea Shepherd has gone to the Faeroes in the past, but this time we return stronger, better equipped, and more experienced than ever and we are returning with a technology that will serve the whales well this summer. In the meantime, until our ships can reach the bloody drenched shores of the Ferocious Isles, the butchers will have free reign to torment and inflict a vicious slaughter to entire families of gentle, wondrous cetaceans.
The Faeroes receive all the benefits of the European Union but consider themselves exempt from the laws of the European Union. The slaughter of the pilot whales is a violation of the Berne Convention. Iceland cannot join the European Union until they stop killing whales, yet the Faeroes are given an exemption by Denmark. Sea Shepherd Conservation Society has joined forces with the Brigitte Bardot Foundation in Europe to bring the Faeroes into compliance with the laws of Europe.
This summer, Sea Shepherd will be in the waters of the Faeroes. We will be on the beaches, and we will be in the air. We will be active in Denmark and we intend to create a controversy that will be heard around the world. We intend to bring this illegal butchery to an end.
There are gentle and intelligent people in the Faeroe Islands who have had to stomach the shame of this slaughter for years, who have been afraid to speak out because of the bullying nature of the cowards who torture and kill the whales. It’s time to confront these cowards and it is time to return to the obscenely bloody beaches of the Faeroes to confront these thugs who delight in boasting about how “God” gave them the “grind” or the “right to wallow in the blood and gore of the whales, to rip the fetuses from the bodies of their mothers and to stress, slash, stab, and club these magnificent gentle creatures to death. They call their killing a “gift from God.”
The only problem is that the only God that would condone such horror is Satan and the Faeroes seem to serve their evil God with all the murderous devotion of cultists who have set aside common decency and mercy in the name of a barbarous tradition that has no place in the 21st Century, no place in civilized society and certainly no place in the European Union.

Dear Craig,

The fishermen of Taiji, Japan have started their annual, cruel practice of rounding up dolphins for slaughter or captivity. Read our field reports below to get the latest!

What can you do to help? Please make a donation today so that we can maintain a presence there, which has been having a stifling effect on their activities. We need to keep the international spotlight focused on them and put an end to this.
Taiji Dolphin Slaughter - What You Can Do
Sadly, it's that time of year again when the small town of Taiji, Japan tries to hide its big secret from the world. September 1st marked the beginning of the Taiji dolphin hunt season in the notorious cove off Japan's southern coast.

Thankfully, due to a large international outcry and an influx of "westerners" into Taiji, no dolphins have been killed this year in the ruthless slaughter. Unfortunately, a small number of dolphins are currently being held captive in the cove and some have already been sold to marine parks (where their lives will be cut short by 2/3)!

Read our recent field report from Taiji, and learn the background on this situation including what you can do to help stop the slaughter.

Denmark Citizen Files Case Against Danish Ministry
Sea Shepherd Supporter Files Claim Against Danish Minstry Sea Shepherd supporter Peter Manthos from Vejle, Denmark filed a police claim against the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs for failure to abide by the Berne Convention by allowing the Faeroese pilot whale slaughter to continue.

The Faeroe Islands are a territory of Denmark, the Faeroese people are Danish citizens, and therefore the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Denmark is in violation of the Berne Convention, of which Denmark is a signatory.

Read the specifics of the case.

Ferocious Isles: New Photos Show Inhumane Bloodbath
Kids playing on a dead pilot whaleThis disturbing image of children playing on a dead pilot whale is just one of many atrocities in the Faeroe Islands that is heart-wrenching.
We now have photos that document pregnant female whales who had their young cut from their bellies and other dead pilot whales who had multiple wounds to the head, showing that their deaths were far from painless.

Learn more, but be aware that these images are graphic.

Faeroe Islands: New Photos Show that Bloodbath in Leynar Claimed Four Pregnant Females 25AUG10

THESE ignorant people in the Faeroes and in Denmark just don't get it....the world is finding out about their bloody cruel slaughter for fun of Pilot whales, and they will pay a price. Why travel to Denmark and support a culture like that? We are finding out these are not the gentle people of Hans Christian Andersen but are more like demons and monsters......they definitely are sick, and the cure is an economic boycott of Denmark, the Faeroes and all things Danish.
Bloodbath in Leynar Claimed Four Pregnant Females IMG 2686On August 5, 2010, a pod of 80 pilot whales was cruelly slaughtered on the beach of Leynar in the Danish Faeroe Islands. Once again, the grind was merciless, as even pregnant females fell victim to the knives of the Faeroe Islanders. Every summer, hundreds—sometimes thousands—of pilot whales are deliberately stranded before their spinal cords are severed with knives in a centuries-old bloody ritual.
Now that Sea Shepherd Conservation Society’s Undercover Operative, Sofia Jonsson, has safely left the Faeroes, Sea Shepherd is able to release shocking images that show that little has changed in the Faeroe Islands since the grind in Klaksvik that Sea Shepherd documented two weeks earlier.
Sea Shepherd activist and marine biologist Sofia Jonsson switched out with veteran Peter Hammarstedt after his cover was compromised in Klaksvik. When Jonsson heard news of the bloodshed in Leynar, she immediately headed to the town of Kivik, where the cetaceans had been transported.
According to Jonsson, “When I arrived, I noticed that several pregnant females had been killed, but their babies were nowhere to be seen. The fetuses had all been moved into either big plastic containers or black garbage bags. I realized that they were hiding them from any prying eyes. I was still able to count at least four dead babies.”
In Klaksvik, Sea Shepherd was able to document several cases where fetuses had been cut directly out of their mothers’ wombs, left to rot on the docks while still attached to the umbilical cord. The images received worldwide attention.
“There was a forklift on the docks that arranged the pilot whales in neat rows,” said Jonsson. “As the whalers were cutting up one of the female pilot whales, they realized that she was pregnant. The whalers asked the forklift driver to turn the cetacean around so that they could cut the fetus out without being seen by the public.”

In addition to images that show the indiscriminate nature of the grind, Jonsson was also able to document that several whales had multiple wounds to the head, showing that their deaths were far from painless; and she was able to photograph disturbing images of children partaking in the grind.
Jonsson stated, “I saw children helping their parents cut the whales up. I saw children sitting on whales; their idea of play was to make carvings in the blubber of the dead pilot whales. In the Faeroes, slaughtering cetaceans is definitely a family affair.”
The grind in Leynar took place before the discovery of the Sea Shepherd vessel Golfo Azzuro by Faeroese authorities. Since then, no pilot whales have been killed in the Faeroe Islands. Sea Shepherd is using noise deterrents to keep the pilot whales away from the Ferocious Islands.

Early Warning System for the Whales: Sea Shepherd Deploys Acoustical Warning System for Whales in the Faeroe Islands 20AUG10

WAY COOL SEA SHEPHERD!!!! I HOPE A WAY CAN BE FOUND TO USE THESE AGAINST THE JAPANESE AND NORWEGIAN WHALERS TOO.

Early Warning System for the WhalesOver the last few weeks, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society has maintained a presence in the Danish Protectorate of the Faeroe Islands.
Sea Shepherd is partnered with the Brigitte Bardot Foundation in our opposition to the brutal and barbaric slaughter of pilot whales by Faeroese citizens.
It is a slaughter more horrific than the killing of the dolphins in Taiji, Japan, and it is taking place in Europe in violation of the Berne Convention, to which Denmark is a signatory.
From our ship the Golfo Azzurro, Sea Shepherd and the Brigitte Bardot Foundation have been gathering evidence on the slaughter of the whales and deploying experimental acoustical devices in the water to ward migrating pilot whales away from the island.
We have kept this idea quiet until now, but today the Faeroese media reported that a pod of pilot whales had escaped because of sounds being broadcasted under the water.
Well, they caught us. We have been doing just that, and it appears that the devices work, and if they work we will be returning next year with more of them to deploy.
The Faeroese slaughter entire pods, including pregnant females and young calves. Not a single whale survives once the Faeroese pull out their long knives and clubs. They perish in an agonizing bloody orgy as drunken fishermen hack, stab, club, and slash the defenseless animals to death, filling the bay with blood.
The Faeroese call it “The Grind” and say it is a tradition and a gift from God. We call it a sadistic blood sport and a crime, a violation of the rules of the European Community, of which the Faeroes receives full benefits.
The acoustical devices can be left in the sea and will operate for weeks on batteries. They may be the key to saving the lives of many of these gentle whales, deterring them away from the violently cruel reception that the Faeroese would otherwise give them.
The crew of the Golfo Azzurro have not broken any laws, and thus the Danish Navy can only escort them; it cannot board or arrest them.
This campaign is being led by Sea Shepherd France President Lamya Essemlali.
Earlier in the summer, Sea Shepherd Undercover Operative Peter Hammarstedt was able to document one of the cruel pilot whale drives. Since then, the Faeroese have taken to covering the fetuses they tear out of the female wombs so they won’t be photographed, indicating that even they may be somewhat ashamed of their sadistic activities.

Death in the Ferocious Isles: Sea Shepherd under Escort by the Danish Navy 18AUG10

THE governments of Denmark and the Faeroes wouldn't be worried about world opinion if they weren't doing something wrong, but they are, and so now the Danish navy is involved in the pathetic attempts to keep the world from finding out about this brutal, bloody, cruel, wasteful slaughter of pilot whales. To tolerate and even protect such behavior is a pathetic statement on the morals of the people of Denmark and the Faeroes.

Death in the Ferocious Isles: Sea Shepherd under Escort by the Danish Navy

Death in the Ferocious IslesWhat can be more horrific than the cruel and senseless slaughter of beautiful and intelligent dolphins in Taiji, Japan?
The Academy Award winning film The Cove turned the international spotlight on the bloody carnage of dolphins screaming in pools of their own blood as Japanese fishermen speared them in the shallows of the cove.
What can be more obscenely monstrous than the pitiful screams of impaled dolphins slaughtered without mercy for profit?
There is something worse, far more cruel and wasteful, and it takes place in Europe.
Sea Shepherd Conservation Society’s undercover ship, the Golfo Azzurro, is presently under pursuit by the Danish Navy after a month of covert surveillance operations in the Danish Protectorate of the Faeroe Islands.
It is in these islands, halfway between Scotland and Iceland, that the slaughter of entire pods of pilot whales takes place. Not for profit, but because it is considered by the islanders to be fun to kill them.
They do eat some whale meat but the flesh is so contaminated with mercury that Faeroese children have higher levels of mercury in their bodies than any other people on the planet. But the majority of the whales are killed and dumped at sea, and Sea Shepherd was able to secure evidence of this waste.
The images are nightmarish with fetuses torn from the bodies of mothers, and bodies mutilated with clubs, knives and spears as the islanders drive the defenseless whales up onto rocky beaches killing every one, wiping out entire pods.
In Taiji, experienced fishermen do the killing, but in the Faeroes, even the children are encouraged by men to spear and stab the whales to death; many of these men are drunk and laughing, in what they consider to be a traditional festival of slaughter.
The killing is a violation of the Berne Convention of which Denmark is a signatory, but Denmark claims that the Faeroese are not subject to the law as a protectorate despite receiving all benefits from the European Community.
Danish warshipSea Shepherd, in partnership with the Brigitte Bardot Foundation, worked earlier this summer with an on-the-ground undercover operative and continues to work at sea onboard the Golfo Azzurro to expose the slaughter and investigate ways to defend the pilot whales from the vicious and lethal assaults by the Faeroese.
Yesterday the Golfo Azzurro’s cover was compromised, and the ship was boarded and searched by police. The vessel was released because no laws had been broken, and it is presently being escorted by the Danish Navy.
Sea Shepherd crew members are continuing their patrol, but this time under the watchful eyes and guns of the Danish Navy.
