Counting The Bugs And Bacteria, You're 'Never Home Alone' (And That's OK)

You may be shocked by what's living in your home — the bacteria, the fungi, viruses, parasites and insects. Probably many more organisms than you imagined.
"Every surface; every bit of air; every bit of water in your home is alive," says Rob Dunn, a professor of applied ecology at North Carolina State University in Raleigh. "The average house has thousands of species."
Dunn started out studying microorganisms and insects in rain forests, but his focus gradually shifted toward backyards and houses. "I eventually found myself in homes with the realization that a lot of what I'd done in jungles ... we could do under the bed and showers," he says. "And we were making the same kinds of discoveries I'd make in Bolivia or Ghana or Australia or anywhere else."
Dunn's new book, Never Home Alone, describes the tiny life forms he's found living in different parts of the home, including on floors and water faucets and in basements and heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems.
Dunn warns that, too often, people attempt to scrub away all microbes — without considering that some of the organisms may actually be beneficial. Take antibacterial soaps, for instance. Dunn notes that although antibacterial soaps kill pathogens, they also tend to favor some bacteria that are harmful to humans.
"They're really a great example of where we've gone too far in trying to kill everything around us, and it's had unintended consequences," he says.
Instead, Dunn suggests that humans would do better to accept the microbes that share our space.




"Our bodies don't exist but for the species that live on and in them," he says. "We can't scrub ourselves free of the rest of life. I hope to be never alone in that sense — to be really isolated from the rest of life would be a very sad thing."

Interview Highlights
On bacteria that live in showerheads
If you unscrew an American-style showerhead — where you have that pipe going into the showerhead and you can just unscrew the tip and then look into the showerhead — what you'll see is a kind of gunk on the inside of the showerhead. That's a biofilm, which is kind of an apartment that the bacteria collectively excrete and then live in. And it keeps them buffered from the flow of water, and so they make that little apartment and they live there. They eat essentially the nutrients that are flowing in the water, through the tap toward you. So when you shower, that's right above you, and a little bit of that breaks off each time you're showering and sort of sprays down onto you. Mostly that's harmless, but there's a group of bacteria called nontuberculous mycobacteria, which are relatives of leprosy and tuberculosis, and those sometimes establish in those biofilms....
People who are on municipal water supply — cities like Philadelphia and New York — that are heavily chlorinated, that chlorine seems to kill most of the bacteria in the water system. But it leaves those nontuberculous mycobacteria alone because they're chlorine-tolerant. So it kind of creates a world in which they can live happily without much competition. On the other hand, in well water (from rural environments or municipal water from some of the European cities that don't treat their water with chlorine), the mycobacterium seems very, very rare. And so we're accidentally making them common by trying to kill everything.
On a recent study on how black mold fungus gets into houses
One place that fungi actually start to pose problems is in your walls. It's been known for a while that if your house gets wet there's suddenly a bunch of kinds of fungi that show up kind of miraculously out of nowhere and grow super quickly. And one of those is this toxic black mold that people worry a lot about. But, interestingly, although lots of money is made on doing abatement of that mold, nobody had really figured out what was going on with this basic biology — until a few years ago when the scientist Birgitte Andersen started to try to figure out, 'When that mold shows up in houses, where has it come from?' ...
So what [Andersen] did was to look at brand new drywall right from the factory to figure out, 'In that drywall, are there already some fungi?' And she was able to show that that toxic black mold — along with several other fungi — basically come preloaded in your drywall. And then they wait in your drywall for months, or years, or however long it takes for the drywall to get wet. And then, once the drywall gets wet, they can eat your house from bottom to top with great joy and a little bit of laughter, I think. And so that's when the problem emerges, and nobody really had any understanding of that until a year and a half ago.
On bacteria that live in our armpits
I find armpit bacteria fascinating. We actually have these glands in our armpits that are not really sweat glands. Their only job is to feed armpit bacteria. So, you have very special microbes in your armpit that, historically, must have had a pretty important role that we still don't really understand. Because those glands are feeding those bacteria so much, we shed lots of those microbes around the house.


I actually think it's pretty likely that those are some of the microbes that are most important in defending us against pathogens. If you think about your body, it's not actually just covered in skin — the outside layer of your body is totally microbial. If a flu virus lands on your hand, the first thing it encounters is not your immune system; it's the layer of your microbes on your hand. I think that some of what those glands are doing may be to feed some of the microbes that best defend us from some of those things we actually have to worry about.
On the microbes cats and dogs bring into our homes
Cats and dogs (and especially dogs) have a huge impact on what's in your home. ... They affect the microbes everywhere in the house. Their microbes drift up and around all over the place. We can actually identify whether or not there's a dog in the house just based on the microbes — 99 percent of the time. And cats have an effect, too, but it's more subtle. ...


It's hard to know which effects the dogs and cats and their microbes are having, and they can be very complex. But one of the things we see is that people, especially in urban environments with dogs, tend to have kids who are less prone to allergy and asthma. One of the things that we think may be happening is that the dogs are actually a vehicle for the connection of those kids to just a little bit of nature. In these environments in which we've isolated ourselves so much from the rest of the world ... the dirt on our dog's paws may be enough connection to forestall allergy and asthma at least a little bit. We don't see that effect with cats, but with dogs it's pretty strong. By the same token, dogs in rural environments seem to have less effect on allergy and asthma. We think that's because in rural environments you're getting so many other exposures to nature that the dog matters a lot less.
On whether one day there might be a probiotic-type product to bring good microbes into our homes
It's not there now, but I look forward to a time when we can essentially garden our homes — fill them with species that benefit us and push out the species that don't. The closest I think we come to that is in the context of making fermented foods. We study sourdough bread a lot. When you make a sourdough starter, that starter has a bunch of microbes that produce lactic acid, and that lactic acid is key to the starter, but it also kills off any other bacteria. And so it's kind of a garden that weeds itself. And for me, that's a metaphor for what we'd like to have in our homes.

How to Get Rid of Spiders in Your House

I haven't seen a spider in my house for a couple of months but this cooler weather will have them trying to get in and then they will be stalking me, trying to hide their webs behind and under furniture while communicating my movements by plucking their web strands using frequencies so low they are only heard by other spiders and elephants. The most dangerous time is when I go to bed because I know spiders try to get to the bedroom because they know that is where I am must vulnerable....once I go to sleep they can come out, blood stained fangs dripping with venom.....BUT I digress, and am creeping myself out.

Spiders can be extremely clever and difficult to get rid of.

If you’ve been wondering why you’re seeing more spiders and webs right in mid-summer and August than the rest of year, you can blame it on the natural ebb and flow of the seasons.
Mid-summer is that magical time when a spider’s biological clock starts ticking, and the urge to extend their species overcomes them. Male spiders are coming out struttin’ their stuff and parading around living rooms full of bravado seeking that special spider.
So how do I get rid of spiders in and around my home?
Spiders are tricky little guys and are extremely clever and mostly solitary creatures. It’s difficult to eliminate something that is small, can slip into wall voids and is hiding from you. But there are a few things you can do to keep their populations down and under control.

1. Keep a clean home

The best way to get rid of spiders is not to let them into the house to begin with, and minimize where they can hang out. Make sure clothes and items are picked up and kept off the floor; the more areas to hide, the more desirable the area. Most spider bites occur when items of clothing (like shoes) are put on without being inspected first. 
This is more likely to happen when shoes are left outside. Regularly clean and wipe away any webs that may be forming, and remember webs can form quickly. The more webs you knock down, the more likely the spider will look elsewhere to build.

2. A clean yard impedes spiders

Mow your grass regularly and get ready to rake in those leaves this fall. Tall grass and leafy coverage are prime spots for spiders.
Don’t give them a place to hide, and they’ll hide somewhere else. This goes for vegetation around your house as well, make sure it’s neatly trimmed regularly. Wood piles attract spiders, so make sure any logs or piles of firewood are kept away from the sides of your house. 
Sweep down any forming webs as soon as you see them, the more you destroy a web the more the spider will see that it is not the most ideal spot to build one.

3. Peppermint prevents spiders

Spiders apparently don’t enjoy the so fresh and so clean smell of peppermint. You can purchase peppermint oil at your local grocery store or Walmart. It’s in the candle section where I tend to spend most of my time.

4. Horse chestnuts may work

If you’re pet free and it’s a general rule in your household not to eat things found on the ground, place horse chestnut pieces in the corner of you basement.
I’m not entirely convinced that this actually works, but it has been said, and why not just try it? Let me know.

5. Rinse and repeat

Number five is the new number one. Cleaning and maintaining your home is the most important and effective rule. Not only are you saving your self from spiders, you’re saving yourself from a load of other pests.
A well maintained home and yard are absolutely your best defense when preventing unwanted pests from entering your home.

6. Remove spider food source: insects

Everyone needs to eat, and spiders are no exception. They go where the food is, and most spiders hunt bugs. So make sure you regularly use pesticides and pest control measures and remove all traces of human food debris. By frequently vacuuming and sanitizing your home, you discourage web building and limit insect invasion. 

7. Percussive maintenance

Spiders are resistant to many pesticides, and their ability to build webs high up and keep themselves from touching the ground gives them further protection. If it comes to it, the best way to get rid of a spider is the old-fashioned shoe or rolled-up newspaper. Otherwise, ask your licensed pest control professional for guidance on how to exterminate spiders.

JUST in time for Halloween this is so disgusting I got goosebumps all over my body when reading it. Trip to Bali now forever off my places to visit list! If Bali belly, dengue fever and dangerous drinks have not been enough to put you off taking a holiday to Bali - perhaps the story of "spiderman" will.
West Australian man Dylan Thomas may now be joking about whether he'll develop "superpowers" but on the weekend he was experiencing a "searing sensation" as a spider that had made its way into his abdomen through an old appendix scar, crawled underneath his skin, all the way up to his sternum.
The horrifying incident happened while the Bunbury man, now known as 'spiderman' to his friends, was holidaying on the Indonesian island.

He told Radio 6PR about the experience.
"It wasn't really a tickling sensation, obviously once the venom started to affect my skin it was a really burning sensation like a searing feeling," he said.
Mr Thomas said he believed the spider had burrowed into his abdomen on Friday night as he noticed a mark on his stomach on Saturday morning that continued to worsen.

An initial visit to a doctor on Sunday saw him diagnosed as having been bitten by an insect and sent away with antihistamines.
Mr Thomas spent another day with the arachnid tunneling inside of him, before going to a hospital.
"Well after running tests and putting things inside my stomach they finally found out it was a tropical spider that's been living inside of me for the last 3 days, managed to get it out luckily," he told his Facebook friends.
Two doctors who initially assessed him "had no idea" what was causing the marks on Mr Thomas's skin until they called in a specialist dermatologist.
The spider was eventually removed with tweezers. It was dead when pulled out.
Mr Thomas said the experience had ruined his first trip to Bali.

It turns out that spiders love city life, especially rich cities.
According to a study published Wednesday by journal PLOS ONE, certain species of spiders thrive when urbanization occurs, as opposed to areas with larger vegetation. Researchers found that in densely-populated areas with hard surface cover, the golden orb weaving spider was found to not only grow to larger sizes than less-dense areas, but also possessed larger ovaries, linking to higher fertility rates.
Why does the species do so well in urban areas? Scientists attribute the prime conditions to higher temperatures and abundance of prey compared to other surroundings. Cities with more than one million people, according to the EPA, experience higher temperatures than rural areas due to the “heat island effect,” proving to be ripe grounds for spider growth. Food-wise, cities tend to have larger amounts of arthropods, while artificial lighting at night is more likely to draw more insects than usual — giving spiders a large amount of food to feast on.
The spiders were also found to grow larger in higher socioeconomic areas, because the richer areas tended to have better parks. “The increased expenditure and management of parks in wealthy suburbs could result in healthier vegetation patches,” the study writes, “which would increase prey abundance and allow spiders to grow larger and build up fat reserves.”

I'M not saying my reaction has been this extreme, but I'm not saying I haven't come close either!
