In the video below U.S. Defense Secretary James Mattis was greeted at a U.S. base in Jordan by a growing number of soldiers as word got around of his arrival. In an impromptu speech to U.S. troops, the retired United States Marine Corps general gave the gathered troops an inspirational message. His comments, which were made after Donald Trump’s controversial press conference on the Charlottesville violence, implored the men and women to ‘hold the line’ on decency and respect.

"You're a great example for our country right now and it's got problems," Mattis says in the video. "You know it and I know it. It's got problems we don't have in the military. And you just hold the line, my fine soldiers, and sailors and airmen and Marines."

Mattis' remarks, which were made in Jordan, according to the site's administrator, were posted in the wake of a tumultuous week in the United States following the white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, and fallout from President Donald Trump's response. It's unclear when exactly Mattis made the comments, though Mattis traveled to Turkey, Ukraine and Jordan last week.

Denver police are saying that 26-year-old Joshua Witt lied on his Facebook page when he claimed that he had been stabbed by a stranger because of his hipster/neo-Nazi haircut. His initial story, which was posted to his Facebook page and since has been pulled down, was looked into by Buzzfeed news after the post had gone viral and Buzzfeed was skeptical.

"I was just getting out of my car to go get myself a milkshake and the next thing I hear is 'You one of them neo-Nazis" as this man is swinging a knife at my head over my car door," Witt told BuzzFeed News at the time. "I threw my hands up out of natural reflex and then I kind of dived back in my car as the suspect took off running."

According to Denver’s CBS Local news affiliate, the Sheridan Police Department became suspicious of Witt when his story didn’t match up and surveillance video showed him buying a small knife shortly before the alleged “incident” took place. The black suspect that Witt pointed to was cleared of having any interaction with Witt.

When police re-interviewed Witt, he admitted to accidentally cutting himself with the knife while parked in his car in front of the sporting goods store. He also admitted making up the story about being attacked.

Witt was booked and released on false reporting charges. If convicted, Witt could face up to $2,650 in fines and up to one year in jail.

It does not seem like Witt himself is affiliated with neo-Nazis or the “alt right” crew. He is just sort of a bit dumb and racist. The problem with that mix, when you are white, is that it can lead to people of color getting hurt or killed.

A Colorado man who claimed that someone had stabbed him because he looked like a “neo-Nazi” fabricated the story after he accidentally cut his hand with a knife, according to police.

Joshua Witt, who has been arrested on false reporting charges, admitted to law enforcement in Sheridan, Colorado, that he lied to officers when he alleged that a black man had attacked him for having a haircut associated with white supremacists, police officials said Monday.

Witt’s original allegations went viral on social media this month, garnering press coverage across the globe, particularly from conservative newspapers that cited the stabbing as an example of violent leftwing activists attacking white people.

Witt – a 26-year-old originally from San Diego, California – told officers on 16 August that a suspect came up to him as he was getting out of his car in the parking lot of a burger restaurant. Witt, according to police, reported that the man said, “Are you [one] of them neo-Nazi?” and then tried to stab him with a small knife. Witt said that he was cut while trying to block the knife with his hand.

Witt described the attacker as a black man in his mid 20s, 5ft 10in, wearing a green shirt and blue pants, and claimed that the suspect ran off toward a bike path along a nearby river.

Sheridan police chief Mark Campbell said in an interview Monday that officers were immediately suspicious of Witt’s story, since the attack allegedly happened in a very busy parking lot and police received no other reports of an assault.

“No one else called this in,” he said. “No one heard him scream. No one saw any type of altercation. That was the first red flag.”

Although Witt posted photos on Facebook showing a lot of blood, the actual wound was very minor, Campbell said. Witt has since taken down his Facebook post, which was shared tens of thousands of times over several days.

Campbell said surveillance footage of the lot did not show any evidence of a suspect running from the scene. Police did, however, question someone who fit Witt’s description – a man who appeared to be homeless and possibly lived nearby, Campbell said. But Witt could not identify the man in a line-up and police cleared him, according to the chief.

Campbell also noted that, as Witt’s mugshot reveals, at the time of the alleged attack, he did not have a haircut resembling the side fade that has recently become associated with neo-Nazis. In his Facebook profile photo, however, his hair was styled that way.

Police also found footage of Witt buying a small knife at a nearby sports store.

When officers brought Witt in for another interview last week, he admitted that he had lied, police said.

“He was opening up the knife package in the car and he cut himself,” Campbell said, adding, “I don’t believe he showed any remorse. Our take is he kind of made this up and it kind of got out of control when it went on Facebook.”

Witt was arrested last week and could face a fine of $2,650 and up to a year in jail if convicted of false reporting.

Campbell said there was no evidence that Witt had any ties to white supremacist or neo-Nazi groups and that he works as a heating and air conditioning technician.

Witt could not be immediately reached for comment.

Witt’s original claims earned sympathetic headlines from conservative news sites, including a Fox News’ report titled, “Anti-Fascist Stabs Innocent Man Over ‘Neo-Nazi’ Haircut”. As of Monday afternoon, Fox had not updated the story.

There have been similar high-profile stories of fabricated assaults over the last year. In the spring, two white hunters in Texas claimed they were shot by Mexican immigrants who had illegally crossed the border and tried to rob them, but police later said they made up the story and had actually fired at each other.

In Georgia, a white police officer said she was shot by a black suspect, but police said an investigation revealed that she had fabricated the shooting.

Campbell said the police department was working to spread the word about the false report.

“There are a lot of people that are actual victims of bias-motivated crimes,” he said, adding, “When a false report like this comes in, it scares people … The whole community gets upset and concerned.”

White House spokesman Sean Spicer warned Russia today that its alliance with Syria is putting it "on the wrong side of history, in a really bad way, really quickly."

The press secretary found himself in the same situation just a moment later, while trying to underscore the horror of Syria's alleged use of chemical weapons.

"You had someone as despicable as Hitler who didn't even sink to using chemical weapons," he said, overlooking the millions who were gassed to death in Nazi concentration camps.

When reporters tried to give Spicer an opportunity to correct his mistake, he only made matters worse.

"He was not using the gas on his own people the same way that [Syrian President Bashar] Assad is doing," Spicer said. "He brought them into the Holocaust center, I understand that. But I'm saying in the way Assad used them, where he went into towns, dropped them down to innocent — into the middle of towns. It was brought — the use of it, I appreciate the clarification. That was not the intent."

This is not the first time this White House has struggled with historical amnesia. During President Trump's first full week in office, he issued a statement honoring Holocaust Remembrance Day but somehow forgot to include any mention of Jews.

The Holocaust Museum in Washington took Spicer to task via Twitter, showing footage of what American forces found when they liberated the death camp at Buchenwald.

The Anne Frank Center for Mutual Respect went further, calling on President Trump to fire Spicer.

"On Passover no less, Sean Spicer has engaged in Holocaust denial, the most offensive form of fake news imaginable, by denying Hitler gassed millions of Jews to death," said the center's executive director, Steven Goldstein. "Spicer's statement is the most evil slur upon a group of people we have ever heard from a White House press secretary."

Democratic House leader Nancy Pelosi also called for Spicer's dismissal.

"While Jewish families across America celebrate Passover, the chief spokesman of this White House is downplaying the horror of the Holocaust," Pelosi said in a statement. "Either he is speaking for the President, or the President should have known better than to hire him."

Late Tuesday, Spicer appeared on CNN to make amends.

"I apologize. It was a mistake to do that," Spicer told Wolf Blitzer. "It was insensitive and inappropriate. I should have stayed focused on the Assad regime and the dangers they have brought to their own people and the terrible atrocities they did and to drag any other comparisons into this was not appropriate."

This is Spicer speaking on Tuesday, the first day of the Jewish holiday of Passover.

PRESS SECRETARY SEAN SPICER: You look, we didn’t use chemical weapons in World War II. You know, you had a—you know, someone as despicable as Hitler, who didn’t even sink to the—to using chemical weapons. So you have to, if you’re Russia, ask yourself: Is this a country that you, and a regime, that you want to align yourself with?

AMY GOODMAN: In fact, the Nazis systematically used poison gas as part of its genocide of 6 million Jews and others. The Nazis began experimenting with gas with the specific purpose of carrying out mass murder in the late ’30s. After the Nazis invaded the Soviet Union, they deployed gas vans to kill hundreds of thousands of people. By 1942, the Nazis had set up a series of concentration camps where gas chambers were the main method of killing people. At its peak, as many as 6,000 people, mostly Jews, were gassed to death every day at Auschwitz concentration camp alone.

During his comments, Spicer also referred to Nazi concentration camps as "holocaust centers." Hours later, Spicer apologized, although he made a number of mistakes during his apology, including mispronouncing Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s name.

PRESS SECRETARY SEAN SPICER: I mistakenly used an inappropriate and insensitive reference to the Holocaust, for which, frankly, there is no—there is no comparison. And for that, I apologize. It was a mistake to do that. I needed to make sure that I clarified and not was in any way, shape or form any more of a distraction from the president’s decisive action in Syria and the attempts that he’s making to destabilize the region. There’s no way that I can see a stable and peaceful Syria with Bashad al-Asiya—Bashar al-Saad in charge.

WOLF BLITZER: Bashar al-Assad. I know you’ve mispronounced his name a few times, but it’s Bashar al-Assad.

NERMEEN SHAIKH: That’s Sean Spicer speaking to Wolf Blitzer. Spicer later said he meant to say President Trump was seeking to stabilize the region, not to destabilize it. On Wednesday, Spicer apologized again, saying he regrets that he, quote, "let the president down."

PRESS SECRETARY SEAN SPICER: I made a mistake. There’s no either way—I mean, there’s no other way to say it. I got into a topic that I shouldn’t have. And—and I screwed up.

AMY GOODMAN: On Wednesday, the Anne Frank Center for Mutual Respect posted on Facebook, quote, "That’s not an apology. That’s a bungled political strategy only in response to a public outcry. Spicer needs to go."

Well, for more, we’re joined by Steven Goldstein, the executive director of the Anne Frank Center for Mutual Respect.

STEVEN GOLDSTEIN: Great to be here.

AMY GOODMAN: Why is this so important to you?

STEVEN GOLDSTEIN: OK. Coming on Passover, I, like many other Jews, were—was with my family during two seders. My entire family wanted to throw up in disbelief. Passover tells the story of Jews who were oppressed, and here we have the press secretary to the president of the United States denying that Adolf Hitler gassed millions of Jews. That means Sean Spicer has to go. He has to be fired. And here’s why, Amy. Either Sean Spicer’s comments were a matter of ignorance, incompetence or prejudice—or all three or any combination thereof. That doesn’t make one fit to be press secretary. In fact, that doesn’t make one fit to serve in government whatsoever. Sean Spicer is an embarrassment to the United States of America.

NERMEEN SHAIKH: Well, what about those who say, including a former spokesman, Ari Fleischer, that such mistakes are commonly made by people who speak extemporaneously?

STEVEN GOLDSTEIN: Oh, well, here’s the problem. That wasn’t just a mere mistake. That comes in the context of this administration’s grotesque insensitivity to Jews through anti-Semitic nonresponses. Let’s not forget that on International Holocaust Remembrance Day in January, this administration refused to include Jews in Holocaust remembrance. And I can’t even begin to tell you how many times this president has been offensive to other oppressed communities, including Muslims, including people of color. So, this is a pattern. This is not a mere mistake.

AMY GOODMAN: So you have Sean Spicer, who apparently apologized, called the billionaire Republican donor Sheldon Adelson. Politico reports Adelson’s office issued a statement, confirming "Sean called shortly after and said he made a terrible mistake and apologized if he was offensive." Your response to—

STEVEN GOLDSTEIN: I’m laughing, because it shows you—Sheldon Adelson is the recipient of an apology. That says it all, doesn’t it?

AMY GOODMAN: Well, explain what you mean.

STEVEN GOLDSTEIN: You know, Sheldon Adelson is a prominent Republican donor. And apologizing to a prominent Republican donor politicizes what Sean Spicer did. Sean Spicer needs to apologize to the entire Jewish community and to, frankly, all people of goodwill. And Sean Spicer really didn’t apologize, folks. As you said, Amy, when you have to pull teeth to get an apology, and it takes three attempts to pull teeth, that’s what you call an apology by committee behind the scenes. You have the White House staff looking at the public outcry, saying, "Sean, you better really clarify your apology." Couldn’t do it once. Couldn’t do it twice. Took him three times, pulling teeth. A national embarrassment.

NERMEEN SHAIKH: Well, what about Trump’s constant refrain—just in the last 30 seconds—that his daughter is Jewish, his son-in-law is Jewish—

STEVEN GOLDSTEIN: You know what?

NERMEEN SHAIKH: —and therefore he cannot be anti-Semitic?

STEVEN GOLDSTEIN: Can I tell you something? It’s so offensive when Donald Trump trots out his daughter and his son-in-law as mere talking points. Is that what Donald Trump does in response to charges of anti-Semitism? He trots out his token relatives who are Jewish? That, in itself, is anti-Semitic.

AMY GOODMAN: Sean Spicer’s reference to "holocaust centers"?

STEVEN GOLDSTEIN: Yeah, what is a holocaust center? I mean, I’ve never heard of that. Is that a community center? That makes complete light of concentration camps. And it shows Sean Spicer’s ignorance. Has this man never heard of the phrase "concentration camp"? If he hasn’t, he’s been through some very bad education in his lifetime. And if that’s the case, he should have gotten educated before he took his job.
