The Man Who Created a Written Language for the Cherokee Did It So Efficiently and Elegantly, His Peers Thought It Was Magic 12JUN26

FASCINATING. I love that this article proves again the Native Americans / First Nations who lived throughout the continent and the Caribbean were and are not ignorant people. Sequoyah is proof of how wrong the White invaders were. The problem for the Europeans who invaded, conquered, committed physical and cultural genocide and stole the lands of the Native Americans / First Nations was and still is for some is they are not White. The neo-nazi fascist drumpf/trump-vance administration and the gop / guardians of  prejudice-republican party are boosting this ignorance, cutting funding of federal programs for Native Americans and in the bans of visitors and immigrants from Brown and Black countries while encouraging immigration of White pro-apartheid South Africans. This is all America, past and present, and this article is from Smithsonian Magazine...

The Man Who Created a Written Language for the Cherokee Did It So Efficiently and Elegantly, His Peers Thought It Was Magic

At first, they laughed. Then they scoffed. Finally, they accused him of witchcraft. The Cherokee silversmith named Sequoyah had spent years scratching strange marks on paper. In 1821, his fellow tribespeople, disturbed by his obsession, put him on trial for practicing black magic. Sequoyah insisted his invention would allow Cherokee speakers to write out Iroquoian language for the first time. To test his claim, tribal elders ordered Sequoyah’s young daughter, Ayoka, to another room. Father and daughter separately made marks on paper and told their minders in each room what the marks said. Then the papers were exchanged. When each was able to read the other’s messages aloud, suspicion turned to wonder.

The astonished elders immediately asked him to teach them his revolutionary transcription method. Within six months, one in four Cherokee, or Tsalagi, could read and write. Within a quarter-century, Cherokee people had achieved a higher rate of literacy than the country’s non-Native population.

The unprecedented development came after years of work by a man whose name means “pig’s foot,” perhaps a reference to his pronounced limp. Born in 1770s Tennessee to a Cherokee mother and a white father, Sequoyah was raised in his mother’s culture and didn’t read or write English. During the War of 1812, he served alongside American soldiers, sometimes using the English name George Guess. The experience likely exposed him to written language, or what he called “talking leaves.”

After the war, Sequoyah moved to Alabama and began experimenting with an ideogrammic approach to written Cherokee, in which each word was a symbol, but he abandoned that as cumbersome and too difficult to learn. Eventually, he hit on 86 syllables that expressed specific sounds, each syllable represented by symbols borrowed from Greek, Hebrew and English. Later reduced to 85 symbols, Sequoyah’s syllabary was not simply a creative triumph, but a new means of self-government and cultural memory: By 1827, the Cherokee had a written constitution, and everything from hunting guidance to sacred chants could be recorded for posterity. The Cherokee Phoenix, the first Native newspaper in the United States, rolled off the press in 1828 using his symbols. Others followed.

The syllabary was widely lauded, as its phonetic accuracy and simplicity made it far easier to grasp than English. “The superiority of Guess’ alphabet is manifest, and has been fully proved by experience,” wrote Albert Gallatin, a U.S. Treasury secretary, diplomat and linguist, in 1836. “The boy learns in a few weeks that which occupies two years of the time of ours.” Yet sudden mass literacy didn’t curb the U.S. government’s growing appetite for Cherokee homelands in North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee. Soon after Gallatin made his comments, the government forced tens of thousands of Cherokee to migrate along the Trail of Tears to a territory now called Oklahoma.

Despite this tragedy, the Cherokee carried the syllabary to their new home and maybe even across the Atlantic. In Liberia, a Cherokee named Austin Curtis, who married into the Indigenous Vai community, is said to have used the syllabary to devise a script for the Vai, which went on to inspire written works throughout West Africa. Sequoyah himself moved to Mexico, where he died in 1843.

Today, with only a few thousand Cherokee fluent in their ancestors’ tongue, the syllabary is a key tool in safeguarding Tsalagi culture. Teenagers use it to text one another; children’s books use it to convey traditional tales; and official documents and road signs communicate in the mode Sequoyah invented—moving reminders of how a single individual’s brilliance and tenacity can change the world.

Did you know? Where did Sequoyah go?

It's unclear why Sequoyah left for Mexico when he was 80 years old, in 1842, but according to an expert with the Cherokee National History Museum, he may have been in search of his fellow Cherokee who had settled there.

Even prior to their forced removal from the southeastern United States, many Cherokee resettled in the early 19th century in East Texas, which at the time was under Spanish rule. After Mexican independence and the later fight for Texan independence, these Cherokee lost contact with their countrymen.
Over the years, many attempts have been made to find Sequoyah's gravesite, but none have been successful.

Mass graves in Gaza show victims’ hands were tied, says UN rights office 23APR24

NOTHING justifies the war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide Israel has been committing in East Jerusalem and the West Bank and now in Gaza since 8 OCT 23 and Southern Lebanon since 28 FEB 26. Lying about these crimes only incites some to commit revenge on Israelis and Jews around the world. Hamas is guilty of committing war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide in attacking Israel on 7 OCT 23 but they had already been committing these same crimes against Palestinians in Gaza who opposed their authoritarian theocracy based on Hamas' apostasy of Islam. I copied a post off Bluesky accusing Israel of being responsible for killing those found in a mass grave in Gaza including babies with ziptied hands. No date and no included sources for the post. It has been reposted and reposted and reposted with multiple comments accusing and condemning Israel and Jews. I was not able to find a UN report documenting and / or accusing Israel of ziptying babies hands, killing them and tossing them in a mass grave. The only UN report I found on mass graves in Gaza is from 23 APR 24. So it seems those who blindly and ignorantly repost things without verifying if they are true or not are not interested in truth, honesty and justice but only in perpetuating hate and violence and the war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide they claim to be so outraged about. Mass graves in Gaza show victims’ hands were tied, says UN rights office

23 April 2024 Peace and Security
Disturbing reports continue to emerge about mass graves in Gaza in which Palestinian victims were reportedly found stripped naked with their hands tied, prompting renewed concerns about possible war crimes amid ongoing Israeli airstrikes, the UN human rights office, OHCHR, said on Tuesday.

The development follows the recovery of hundreds of bodies “buried deep in the ground and covered with waste” over the weekend at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, central Gaza, and at Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City in the north. A total of 283 bodies were recovered at Nasser Hospital, of which 42 were identified.

Among the deceased were allegedly older people, women and wounded, while others were found tied with their hands…tied and stripped of their clothes,” said Ravina Shamdasani, spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Al-Shifa discovery

Citing the local health authorities in Gaza, Ms. Shamdasani added that more bodies had been found at Al-Shifa Hospital.

The large health complex was the enclave’s main tertiary facility before war erupted on 7 October. It was the focus of an Israeli military incursion to root out Hamas militants allegedly operating inside which ended at the beginning of this month. After two weeks of intense clashes, UN humanitarians assessed the site and confirmed on 5 April that Al-Shifa was “an empty shell”, with most equipment reduced to ashes.

“Reports suggest that there were 30 Palestinian bodies buried in two graves in the courtyard of Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City; one in front of the emergency building and the others in front of the dialysis building,” Ms. Shamdasani told journalists in Geneva.

The bodies of 12 Palestinians have now been identified from these locations at Al-Shifa, the OHCHR spokesperson continued, but identification has not yet been possible for the remaining individuals.

“There are reports that the hands of some of these bodies were also tied,” Ms. Shamdasani said, adding that there could be “many more” victims, “despite the claim by the Israeli Defense Forces to have killed 200 Palestinians during the Al-Shifa medical complex operation”.

200 days of horror

Some 200 days since intense Israeli bombardment began in response to Hamas-led terror attacks in southern Israel, UN human rights chief Volker Türk expressed his horror at the destruction of Nasser and Al-Shifa hospitals and the reported discovery of mass graves.

The intentional killing of civilians, detainees and others who are hors de combat is a war crime,” Mr. Türk said in a call for independent investigations into the deaths.

Mounting toll

As of 22 April, more than 34,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, including 14,685 children and 9,670 women, the High Commissioner’s office said, citing the enclave’s health authorities. Another 77,084 have been injured, and over 7,000 others are assumed to be under the rubble.

Every 10 minutes a child is killed or wounded. They are protected under the laws of war, and yet they are ones who are disproportionately paying the ultimate price in this war,” said the High Commissioner.

Türk warning

The UN rights chief also reiterated his warning against a full-scale Israeli incursion of Rafah, where an estimated 1.2 million Gazans “have been forcibly cornered”.

“The world’s leaders stand united on the imperative of protecting the civilian population trapped in Rafah,” the High Commissioner said in a statement, which also condemned Israeli strikes against Rafah in recent days that mainly killed women and children.

This included an attack on an apartment building in the Tal Al Sultan area on 19 April which killed nine Palestinians “including six children and two women”, along with a strike on As Shabora Camp in Rafah a day later that reportedly left four dead, including a girl and a pregnant woman.

“The latest images of a premature child taken from the womb of her dying mother, of the adjacent two houses where 15 children and five women were killed, this is beyond warfare,” said Mr. Türk.

The High Commissioner decried the “unspeakable suffering” caused by months of warfare and appealed once again for “the resulting misery and destruction, starvation and disease and the risk of wider conflict” to end.

Mr. Türk also reiterated his call for an immediate ceasefire, the release of all remaining hostages taken from Israel and those held in arbitrary detention and the unfettered flow of humanitarian aid.

Massive settler attacks in West Bank

Turning to the West Bank, the UN rights chief said that grave human rights violations had continued there “unabated”.

This was despite international condemnation of “massive settler attacks” between 12 and 14 April “that had been facilitated by the Israeli Security Forces (ISF)”.

Settler violence has been organized “with the support, protection, and participation of the ISF”, Mr. Türk insisted, before describing a 50-hour long operation into Nur Shams refugee camp and Tulkarem city starting on 18 April.

“The ISF deployed ground troops, bulldozers and drones and sealed the camp. Fourteen Palestinians were killed, three of them children,” the UN rights chief said, noting that 10 ISF members had been injured.

In a statement, Mr. Türk also highlighted reports that several Palestinians had been unlawfully killed in the Nur Shams operation “and that the ISF used unarmed Palestinians to shield their forces from attack and killed others in apparent extrajudicial executions”

Dozens were reportedly detained and ill-treated while the ISF “inflicted unprecedented and apparently wanton destruction on the camp and its infrastructure”, the High Commissioner said.

Is the original poster hamas? I searched UN reports, find nothing supporting the accusations of this post. Israel is committing genocide, war crimes & crimes against humanity & must be held accountable. Hamas is doing the same against Gazans who don't support them. Is this mass grave Hamas' doing?
