EXPOSING illegal child labor and illegal migrant labor practices shouldn't land a person in jail, but that is what is going to happen unless Dole forces the TPIA / Thai Pineapple Industry Association and Natural Fruit Ltd to drop their defamation charges against Andy Hall for doing just that. Please sign the petition to Dole letting them know you will boycott all Dole products unless the charges against Andy Hall are dropped, he is set free, and Natural Fruit stops using child labor and stops abusing migrant workers. Eight years in prison and a $10 million fine. That’s what Andy Hall faces in only three days' time -- just for exposing multiple human abuses in a Thai pineapple factory, including child labor.
Andy was brave enough to take on Natural Fruit Ltd, one of the biggest pineapple producers and exporters in Thailand, and reveal the company’s abuse of migrant workers. But now Natural Fruit Ltd. is striking back -- hard. Andy’s British passport has already been taken, and his bogus defamation trial starts in less than three days. But there’s still hope to secure his freedom.
Natural Fruit’s president is also the chair of the Thai Pineapple Industry Association (TPIA) -- where global fruit giant Dole is an influential member. Dole could use its influence to push for the charges to be dropped -- but so far it has stood silent.
Andy's trial starts on Tuesday -- call on Dole to take a stand, and demand the head of the Thai Pineapple Industry Association drops these bogus charges.
Last week, nearly 100 human rights and labor organizations, including Human Rights Watch and unions around the world, spoke out in support of Andy and called on the TPIA and its members to push Natural Fruit Ltd. to drop the charges against Andy. Andy's research helped expose gross labour rights violations including child labour, passport confiscation, forced work, violence in Natural Fruit's factory. But TPIA’s response was despicable: the association not only refused to help, it also further threatened Andy for his work protecting migrant workers.
So Andy and his allies are asking for our support. On Tuesday, the first of four criminal and civil trials will begin, and Andy is fighting for his freedom.
The aim of Natural Fruit Ltd and its industry allies is clear: To silence human rights advocates who dare to challenge their labour abuses. This isn’t just about Andy: If this lawsuit goes ahead and critics are silenced, the consequences for workers in Thailand will be real -- and they will not be good.
But we can stop this. Dole is a massive consumer facing brand and can’t afford to be associated with a company that silences its opponents by threatening jail sentences. If they put pressure on Natural Fruit Ltd and the industry association TPIA, then we can get the charges against Andy dropped, and continue to push for better working conditions in the industry. Let’s stand up for courageous human rights defenders and workers around the world.

MEXICO suffers horribly from drug cartel violence, yet here is a man, a priest, providing support and shelter for migrants in southern Mexico who is being attacked and threatened. Father Alejandro Solalinde Guerra is a Catholic priest who has dedicated his life to providing a place of safety for migrants, away from the criminal gangs who exploit and abuse them. Because of his work, Father Solalinde has been continuously threatened and intimidated by local gangs and officials. His life is at risk.
Father Solalinde is the co-ordinator of the Catholic Pastoral Care Centre for Migrants in Southwestern Mexico (Pastoral de Movilidad Humana Pacifico Sur del Episcopado Mexicano) and director of a migrants’ shelter that was set up to provide humanitarian assistance to migrants who get injured or need help. This solidarity with migrants has provoked attacks and harassment from xenophobic members of local communities, often encouraged by criminal gangs and local officials. Father Solalinde has regularly been threatened and intimidated,and the authorities have done little to protect him, or investigate the threats against him.
On 24 June 2008, a group of about 50 residents of Ciudad Ixtepec, the city where Father Solalinde works, broke into the migrants’ shelter. The group, led by municipal officials, including the Mayor and 14 municipal police, threatened to set the building on fire if it was not shut down within 48 hours. This followed the arrest of a Central American migrant over the rape of a six-year-old girl in the city a few days earlier. In interviews with local newspapers, Father Solalinde had condemned the rape, but clarified that the arrested man had not been staying at his shelter. Father Solalinde told journalists that the rape had led to increased resentment against Central American migrants travelling through the area. The authorities did not investigate the break-in and threat from the municipal officials, and although the shelter was not attacked, the incident increased fears for the safety of Father Solalinde and the migrants at his shelter.
Since 2008 Father Solalinde has faced frequent intimidation. Local media often report false stories blaming the shelter for housing migrants who are suspected of committing criminal offences. Father Solalinde has publicly condemned Mexican officials’ treatment of irregular migrants, making himself increasingly vulnerable to attack and intimidation.

Malaysia must stop criminalizing migrants, refugees and asylum-seekers from AI 4NOV10
PLEASE participate in this action calling on the Malaysian government to protect migrant workers, who make up 25% of the Malaysian workforce. The physical, sexual, psychological and economic abuse suffered by these people is horrible, and often includes torture. Amnesty International is calling on the governments of Malaysia and Indonesia to crack down on agencies in both countries that manipulate, exploit and abuse these workers and the employers who treat these people as slaves, or worse. Malaysia must stop criminalizing migrants, refugees and asylum-seekers
This is the story of a 22 year old ethnic Karen man from Myanmar. He told Amnesty International the story of his detention in Lenggeng in Malaysia. He was later sentenced by a judge to whipping and was sent to Kajang prison. He has since been recognised as a refugee by the UNHCR, but not by the Malaysian government.
“I left Myanmar for Malaysia because of the military regime. Once in Malaysia, I worked in many different places—in a paper factory, planting flowers, in a restaurant, an oil palm plantation and in a car wash where I as arrested during a RELA (volunteer immigration forces) raid. That was in May 2008.
After my arrest, I spent three hours in a police station. Then I was sent to the Lenggeng detention camp.
In Lenggeng, there were insects that bit us all the time. They bit me all over. No mattresses were provided; we slept on the wooden platforms. We were only given a blanket and a mug.
After 15 days, I was sent to court. I did not understand what was going on because there was no translator. A Chin from Myanmar translated for me when I was questioned by the judge.
The judge asked where I was from, to which I replied. He did not ask whether I was registered with the UNHCR or not. When he asked why I had come to Malaysia, I said it was because of money. When he told me to return to my country, I said I did not have a passport or any money that would allow me to return. The judge then asked me if what I had done was “salah” (wrong), and I said yes. I was sentenced to a month in jail and one strike of “rotan” (caning/whipping).
On the day I was whipped, they removed all my clothing except for a small piece of cloth to cover my penis. It was like a trouser but with the buttocks area cut off. They tied me up. I was hit once very hard with a cane. It cut my skin and hurt very much. There was blood. I could not wear any proper clothing for five days after the caning because of the pain and because it stuck to my cut. I still have nightmares about it. I cannot bear thinking about it. I am very afraid that I may be whipped again if caught.”
After he served his sentence, he was deported to the Thai border, where he was trafficked back into Malaysia after paying the traffickers 2,200 ringgit (US$600). At the time of the interview, he was working as an undocumented migrant in Malaysia.
