Palestinian Columbia student detained by ICE at citizenship interview 16APR25

NOTHING screams fascist authoritarian oppression like illegal arrest of citizens and legal resident aliens. Here is a perfect example from the Washington Post. Mohsen Mahdawi was at an ice facility for his final interview to become an American citizen when he was arrested by ice. He has not done anything illegal, he did participate in non-violent protest at Columbia University against Israel's war on Gaza. A habeas motion for Mahdawi has been filed by his lawyers, now the court has to decide what to do. The NOT MY pres drumpf / trump-vance administration does not seem to be inclined to follow the courts rulings against most of their executive orders and deportations so actual rule of law has yet to be determined. More and more I see a reich court in our future...

Palestinian Columbia student detained by ICE at citizenship interview

Mohsen Mahdawi, who has been a green-card holder for 10 years, was detained at an ICE field center in Vermont while appearing for a naturalization test.

Columbia student Mohsen Mahdawi walked into an Immigration and Customs Enforcement office in Colchester, Vermont, on Monday morning for a naturalization interview — a key step on the path to U.S. citizenship.

Instead, Mahdawi — who has been a green-card holder for 10 years — was arrested by ICE officials.

According to court documents and video posted online of his arrest, he was scheduled to appear at an ICE field center for the interview at about 11 a.m. Eastern time. Roughly an hour later, he was handcuffed and escorted by ICE officials toward a motorcade of vehicles, to be detained at an undisclosed location.

Mahdawi, who grew up in a Palestinian refugee camp, was a prominent activist in the protests at Columbia over Israel’s war in Gaza. His lawyers said his detention was in retaliation for his advocacy.

“He was clearly eligible for naturalization. He met all the requirements for citizenship, and he had applied for it last year, and he was scheduled for an interview, and he should have been naturalized,” Cyrus Mehta, one of the attorneys representing Mahdawi, told The Washington Post. “There’s no need to detain a lawful permanent resident incommunicado.”

Lawyers representing Mahdawi immediately filed a writ of habeas corpus and petition for a temporary restraining order, noting “the government’s retaliatory and targeted detention and attempted removal of Mr. Mahdawi for his constitutionally protected speech.”

A district judge in Vermont on Monday temporarily ordered that Mahdawi not be deported from the United States or moved out of the state.

A spokesperson for ICE and the Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the reason for his arrest or where he is being held.

After Mahdawi was detained Monday, legal experts said the arrest of a lawful permanent resident who has not been charged with a crime, at a naturalization interview, is highly unusual.

“The arrest sends a chilling message — no one is safe, and non-U.S. citizens must be silenced,” said Elora Mukherjee, a professor and the director of the Immigrants’ Rights Clinic at Columbia Law School.

“The First Amendment is supposed to protect all people on U.S. soil, regardless of immigration status. But the executive branch is pushing its authority well beyond the system of checks and balances set up by the U.S. Constitution, testing the rule of law, risking our constitutional democracy and pushing our nation toward authoritarianism.”

The Washington Post examined which groups of immigrants could be at higher risk of deportation under the second Trump administration, and what logistical and financial obstacles stand in the way.

In a joint statement, Vermont senators Bernie Sanders (I) and Peter Welch (D) as well as Rep. Becca Balint (D) called the circumstances of Mahdawi’s arrest “immoral, inhumane, and illegal,” and demanded his immediate release.

The Trump administration’s crackdown on alleged antisemitism on college campuses is increasingly targeting international students who have been critical of Israel or participated in pro-Palestinian demonstrations. Students and instructors say President Donald Trump is trying to outlaw criticism of Israel’s war in Gaza and bend universities to his will, The Post reported.

The administration in March detained Mahmoud Khalil, a green-card holder and a Palestinian student activist at Columbia. An immigration judge in Louisiana this month ruled that Khalil is eligible for deportation, setting an April 23 deadline for Khalil’s legal team to apply for a waiver. A separate legal challenge against his detention continues in New Jersey.

Khalil's arrest was filmed by his wife, Noor Abdalla. (Video: Noor Abdalla)

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a memo that the presence in the U.S. of Khalil and another student, whose name was redacted, would “undermine U.S. policy to combat antisemitism around the world and in the United States” — accusations vigorously rejected by Khalil’s legal team.

Some pro-Palestinian students have been targeted by right-wing Zionist groups that are seeking their detention and deportation. One of those groups, Betar US, told The Post in March that Mahdawi was on a shortlist of three people that it was encouraging the Trump administration to deport under its executive order on antisemitism.

The group said at the time that it had provided unnamed administration contacts with dossiers on the activism and immigration status of Mahdawi, Cornell student Momodou Taal and another academic. Taal had his visa revoked weeks later and left the U.S. earlier this month, saying on social media that he had “lost faith that I could walk the streets without being abducted.”

The Department of Homeland Security denied that ICE was working with Betar.

According to court documents filed by Mahdawi’s lawyers, he is expected to graduate in May and has been admitted to a Masters program at Columbia’s School of International and Public Affairs in the fall.

His upbringing at a refugee camp compelled him to advocate for Palestinian human rights, the documents say. They add that he is a Buddhist who believes in nonviolence and, during the campus protests, advocated for a peaceful political solution to the conflict in the Middle East.

During an interview on “60 Minutes” in December 2023, Mahdawi described watching an Israeli soldier kill his best friend at the age of 10 while living in the occupied West Bank — and how his views on the conflict have evolved.

“The fight for the freedom of Palestine and the fight against antisemitism go hand-in-hand, because injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere,” he said in the interview.

Pushback in the courts: Advocacy groups and others have filed lawsuits over many of Trump’s new policies. Officials in 22 states, plus D.C. and San Francisco, have sued over Trump’s birthright citizenship executive order. Lawyers for the American Civil Liberties Union, the National Immigrant Justice Center and others have challenged the Trump administration’s claim that there is an “invasion” on the border to justify summarily expelling migrants without giving them a chance to apply for asylum.

Glenn Beck's Anti-Semitic Attacks 11NOV10 & Glenn Beck's Horrific Lie 12NOV10

glenn beck has reached a new low, which I, like many, thought was impossible. His lies concerning George Soros and how he survived the Holocaust are gross, disgusting, do not count as news even on fox "news" and I agree with the author of this post, Cenk Uygur, that beck should be fired. The chance of fox "news" / "news" corp doing the honorable thing? I am waiting to be surprised but not holding my breath...(see my post earlier today

German Exhibit Shows Mass Appeal Of Nazi Ideology 8NOV10 )

From HuffPost.....and then from The Daily Beast

As much as I disagree with the hosts on Fox News, I have never called for any of them to be fired. I defended Don Imus when he got in trouble with his incendiary comments. That's because I believe a talk show host should have wide berth, even to offend. They are the conversation starters and at the heart of our political discourse.
Of course, as a talk show host I'm very biased on this issue, but I think it helps the national conversation to hear everyone out. That's even if what they're saying is outrageous or not even remotely true. Let there be a battlefield of ideas and I think the truth will win out in the long run (though it loses many battles in the short run).
Now that you know how strongly I feel about that -- I think Glenn Beck should be fired. He has told a lie so grotesque that it goes beyond the pale of even dirty politics. Just when I thought he couldn't shock my conscience anymore, he has done it. Let me explain.
George Soros survived the Holocaust. He is Jewish and when the Nazis caught up with his family his father saved his life by bribing an agricultural official to pretend Soros was his Christian godson. At one point, that man took the fourteen year old Soros to survey and appraise the property that had been confiscated from another Jewish family. Obviously Soros did not have a choice in the matter. Soros eventually survived the Holocaust.
To most this would be an amazing and harrowing story of survival during the Holocaust. To Beck it was an opportunity to paint Soros as an anti-Semite and smear him with one of the worst lies I have ever heard.
First Beck started by horribly warping this story on his Fox News show. He said of Soros:
[When he was] 14 years old, he had to help the government confiscate the land of his fellow Jewish friends and neighbors.
That's not what happened at all as you can see from above. He didn't help confiscate people's land. He didn't actively participate in betraying his Jewish neighbors or friends. The implications are horrible. But what Beck did next is much worse. He twisted the story further until he came out with this inexcusable lie on his radio show:
[H]ere's a Jewish boy helping send the Jews to the death camps.
That lie takes my breath away. That is a lie that cannot be told.
The ADL has now condemned Beck's statements as "horrific."
Michelle Goldberg has a terrific article in The Daily Beast explaining how Beck's two part series on Fox News Channel about George Soros was classic anti-Semitism. He even named the series "Puppet Master." Nazi propaganda used to call Jews the "wire pullers."
The Nazis would say in their propaganda pieces that Jews secretly controlled everything and brought down whatever governments they didn't like. Beck's two part series on Soros talked about how he was the secret force behind the progressive agenda and surreptitiously brought down governments he didn't like (Communist governments by the way, but apparently he doesn't get credit for that). And Beck concludes by saying that we might be next. Soros might destroy our country. This is anti-Semitism 101.
One man has already tried to assassinate people who worked for the Tides Foundation because Beck accused them of being tied to George Soros. That man was caught in a shoot-out with cops before he could kill the people who worked there. Beck undeterred by what he is spurring people to do, has put his foot on the gas pedeal to try to stoke the fires more.
Fox News has told and spread many lies, ranging from the absurd (President Obama is going to spend $200 million a day in his trip to India) to the politically devastating (they invited John Kerry's accusers on-air to smear his Vietnam service repeatedly during the 2004 election). I know that's what they do. But even I didn't know it went this far. If Beck doesn't get fired over this, what else can he say? I literally cannot think of anything more outrageous.
They call themselves a "News Channel." Is this the kind of "news" people want to participate in?
This is the kind of thing people should resign in protest over. This is the kind of thing that guests shouldn't go on the channel over. This is the kind of thing that people shouldn't want their names associated with.
If Fox doesn't fire Beck over this, well then you know exactly where they stand. It certainly isn't as a news channel.

The Fox host’s stunning two-day tirade against George Soros is a new low on American television. Michelle Goldberg on the roots of his hatred—and the Anti-Defamation League’s response.
Anti-Semitism, like all ideologies, tells a story about the world. It’s a story about almost occult Jewish power, about cabals that manipulate world events for their own gain. In classic anti-Semitic narratives, Jews control both the elites and the masses; they’re responsible for the communist revolution and the speculative excesses of capitalism. Their goal is to undermine society so that they can take over. Through the lens of anti-Semitism, social division, runaway inflation, and moral breakdown all make sense because they all have the same cause. Nazi propaganda called Jews drahtzieher—wire-pullers. They constitute a power above and beyond ordinary government authority. “There is a super-government which is allied to no government, which is free from them all, and yet which has its hand in them all,” Henry Ford wrote in The International Jew.
Article - Goldberg Beck Soros Glenn Beck and George Soros. (AP Photos) If you know this history, you’ll understand why Glenn Beck’s two-part “exposé” on George Soros, whom Beck calls “The Puppet Master,” was so shocking, even by Beck’s degraded standards. The program, which aired Tuesday and Wednesday, was a symphony of anti-Semitic dog-whistles. Nothing like it has ever been on American television before.
“There is a crisis collapsing our economy—George Soros,” Beck said on Tuesday’s show. “When the administration and progressives look for a savior to step in and save the day—George Soros… He’s pulled no punches about the end game. It’s one world government, the end of America's status as the prevailing world power—but why?” Because, Beck suggests, Soros wants to rule us all like a God: “Soros has admitted in the past he doesn't believe in God, but that's perhaps because he thinks he is.”
Soros, a billionaire financier and patron of liberal causes, has long been an object of hatred on the right. But Beck went beyond demonizing him; he cast him as the protagonist in an updated Protocols of the Elders of Zion. He described Soros as the most powerful man on earth, the creator of a “shadow government” that manipulates regimes and currencies for its own enrichment. Obama is his “puppet,” Beck says. Soros has even “infiltrated the churches.” He foments social unrest and economic distress so he can bring down governments, all for his own financial gain. “Four times before,” Beck warned. “We’ll be number five.”
Beck went beyond demonizing Soros; he cast him as the protagonist in an updated Protocols of the Elders of Zion.
It’s true, of course, that Soros has had a hand in bringing down governments—communist, authoritarian governments. Beck seems to be assuming a colossal level of ignorance on the part of his viewers when he informs them, “Along with currencies, Soros also collapses regimes. With his Open Society Fund… Soros has helped fund the Velvet Revolution in the Czech Republic, the Orange Revolution in the Ukraine, the Rose Revolution in Georgia. He also helped to engineer coups in Slovakia, Croatia, and Yugoslavia. So what is his target now? Us. America.”
Beck’s implication is that there was something sinister in Soros’ support for anti-communist civil society organizations in the former Soviet Union. Further, he sees such support as evidence that Soros will engineer a communist coup here in the United States. This kind of thinking only makes sense within the conspiratorial mind-set of classic anti-Semitism, in which Jews threaten all governments equally. And as a wealthy Jew with a distinct Eastern European accent, Soros is a perfect target for such theories.
To inoculate himself against charges of anti-Semitism, Beck hurled them at Soros, pointing out that he’s an atheist and a critic of Israel. He accused Soros of helping Nazis steal Jewish property as a teenager and of feeling no remorse about it. In fact, when Soros was 14 in Nazi-occupied Hungary, his father bribed an agriculture official to pretend that the boy was his Christian godson. Soros once had to accompany his protector to inventory a confiscated Jewish estate. Asked by 60 Minutes if he felt guilty about it, he said no, because he wasn’t at fault. The slander that he was a Nazi collaborator has proliferated on the right ever since.
It’s entirely possible that Beck has waded into anti-Semitic waters inadvertently, that he picked up toxic ideas from his right-wing demimonde without realizing their anti-Jewish provenance. Early on Wednesday’s show, Beck cited the “Prime Minister of Malaysia” on Soros’ villainy. As Media Matters pointed out, he was almost certainly talking about former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad. Maybe he doesn’t know that Mohamad also said, “We do not want to say that this is a plot by the Jews, but in reality it is a Jew who triggered the currency plunge, and coincidentally Soros is a Jew.”
“There’s a difference between first-degree murder and vehicular homicide, which is intentionality,” says J.J. Goldberg, a columnist and former editor in chief of The Forward, America’s leading Jewish newspaper. Goldberg wasn’t convinced that Beck meant to attack Jews. Nevertheless, he described the show as “as close as I’ve heard on mainstream television to fascism.”
On Thursday morning, the Anti-Defamation League, which exists to combat anti-Semitism, finally condemned Beck. Earlier, I’d criticized the group for its silence, a change that Todd Gutnick, the ADL’s director of media relations, fiercely disputed. “Sometimes the ADL likes to consider what it’s going to say before it says it,” he said. “In this case we wanted to see the totality of what he was doing on the air before speaking out.”

In a statement, Abraham Foxman, the ADL’s national director and a Holocaust survivor himself, expressed outrage over Beck’s charges about Soros’ behavior as a boy in Nazi-occupied Hungary, which Beck made on television on Tuesday and again on the radio Wednesday. “Glenn Beck’s description of George Soros’ actions during the Holocaust is completely inappropriate, offensive and over the top,” said Foxman. “For a political commentator or entertainer to have the audacity to say—inaccurately—that there’s a Jewish boy sending Jews to death camps, as part of a broader assault on Mr. Soros, that’s horrific… To hold a young boy responsible for what was going on around him during the Holocaust as part of a larger effort to denigrate the man is repugnant.”

The GOP's Facebook Anti-Semites 29JUL10

After MoJo inquiries, the Republican Party promises to take down a Facebook page with offensive comments.
Thu Jul. 29, 2010 7:26 AM PDT
Israel is responsible for 9/11, Al Qaeda is "100% state sponsored by Zionist Jews," and White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel is actually an agent for Mossad, the Israeli spy agency—at least according to posts that appeared on the Republican National Committee's Facebook page. (You can see screen shots of some of the posts below.)
Several avowedly anti-Semitic commenters regularly posted on the national GOP's Facebook wall, encouraging tea partiers and "White, Black, Spanish, [and] Asian" people to "arm yourselves" and rise up against the "Zionist Jews" who, they claim, control the country and the media. They linked to a site that hosts purported versions of the "Protocols of the Elders of Zion" and promoted 9/11 "truth" theories that allege "Israeli agents carried out the attacks."
The RNC could easily have deleted these comments—it's as easy as clicking "remove" if an administrator is signed in to the account—or blocked the users who were posting them. Even if the RNC decided it didn't have the resources to monitor its Facebook wall, it could have simply disabled the ability to comment on its wall. When Mother Jones contacted the committee for comment Thursday morning, the RNC disabled its Facebook discussion board, but not its wall containing the anti-Semitic comments. When a Mother Jones reporter explained the difference between a Facebook discussion board and a wall, RNC spokesman Doug Heye promised the wall "will be down shortly." (UPDATE, July 30: The comments have been removed, but the wall is still up.)  "We're interested in a civil debate, and any rhetoric or language that is out of bounds is not something we're interested in hosting and not something we're interested in hearing," Heye said. "We have decided we are better off closing down our discussion page." That's what Organizing for America has done with Barack Obama's Facebook page. (The White House's wall, however, is still live.) But until it was contacted by Mother Jones, the RNC allowed commenting to continue unabated—and apparently unmoderated.
The various comments—which came from Facebook users calling themselves "Jennifer Grey" and "Shelly Adams"—also included attacks on "Jew-controlled" politicians. Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.), Sen. Russ Feingold (D-Wisc.), Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz (D-Fla.), Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.), and Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-Wisc.) are among those targeted. (All except Sensenbrenner are Jewish). Presidents George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama are criticized as "Zionist Puppets."
Kevin Anderson, a Californian Facebook user who describes himself as a "staunch Republican," alerted Mother Jones to the comments. Anderson says he was banned from commenting on the RNC's Facebook page after he complained about the anti-Semitic comments to committee officials. He claims that "hooked nose" style photos initially accompanied the posts. Those photos were removed when he first threatened to contact the press, he says.
At Mother Jones, interns review every comment that comes through the system, and delete the most offensive ones, along with a whole bunch of spam. Mother Jones also has an intern who monitors the magazine's Facebook wall.
Some media organizations have taken different tacks—ignoring comments entirely. But Andrew Rasiej, the co-founder of the Personal Democracy Forum, says that's not an option for politicians and political organizations. "I don't think that's acceptable," he says. "If they have comments open, then they're inviting reasonable people to comment. To allow a free-for-all means you are not respecting the reasonable commenters."
A review of the Democratic National Committee's Facebook wall during the past month reveals one commenter warning his "fellow Africa-Americans" to "be on the watch for jews with anti-black behavior." The DNC page also shows many posts from Anderson pushing Republican talking points—and trying to draw attention to the anti-Semitism on the GOP page.
"While I don't think this indicates anti-Semitism among the GOP leadership," Anderson writes. "I feel it indicates that there is a certain laxity among GOP workers in removing anti-Semitic screeds from GOP sounding boards. However, as this is an OFFICIAL GOP sounding board sponsored by the Republican National Committee and moderated by GOP employees. I think you might have room to indicate certain biases among the workers at the GOP and indicate an ethical climate of its official party organs."
This isn't the first time the RNC has gotten in trouble for the content of its Facebook page. Last October, it kept a number of racist pictures of Obama (including one saying "miscegenation is a crime against American values") on its page for nearly a week before removing them.
Screen shots of the RNC posts follow below. You can also look at a large (11.7 MB) PDF of the posts from the month of July.

Bringing Terrorism Suspects to Justice
The attempted bombing in Times Square intensified the debate about how to treat terrorism suspects and where they should be prosecuted. Now Obama administration officials are saying they may ask Congress to weaken the Miranda rule, a central principle of our justice system designed to ensure that evidence presented at trial is reliable.
Miranda plays an important role in our criminal justice system--a system that has proven more effective than military commissions at prosecuting terrorism suspects. Human Rights First is working with professional interrogators and law enforcement experts who know that we can get the intelligence we need to combat terrorism by working within the law and through our institutions.
Let President Obama know that you stand with experienced law enforcement professionals in supporting our Constitution and our criminal justice system. Send him a letter today!

HRF President and CEO Elisa Massimino testified last month before Congress about how to combat the rise in antisemitic violence. She pointed to our Ten Point Plan that shows governments how to stem violence driven by biases including religious intolerance, homophobia, racism, and other forms of discrimination.
This month, we're focusing our attention on the newly elected Hungarian government in an effort to address the alarming rise in antisemitic and anti-Roma violence there.

On the Ground in the Middle East
HRF staff worked in the Middle East last month, tackling issues from the protection of refugees to support for human rights defenders' use of the Internet for activism.
Members of our Refugee Protection team interviewed Iraqi refugees in Jordan as part of our work to make sure these refugees--victims of war and violence in their home country--are resettled. Stay tuned for our report and recommendations but, for a sneak preview, check out Jesse Bernstein's Huffington Post article.
International Policy Advisor Neil Hicks traveled to Egypt to meet with human rights defenders and other stakeholders about the changing face of activism there--including the growth of Internet advocacy. As Egypt begins to plan for elections, HRF will be focusing on U.S. policy toward this strategic partner.

GOOGLE CENSORSHIP DISCLOSURE HELPS QUANTIFY A TROUBLING TREND AND UNDERSCORES THE NEED FOR ACTION 22APR10

What do Australia, Brazil, India, the United States and Britain have in common? This week, Google named each of these nations among the list of countries that most often contact it with requests for content removal and user data. Google's disclosure is a bold step towards quantifying this trend. Whether it leads to greater protection of user privacy and free expression on the Internet will depend on the policies that guide the companies' responses to these government requests. But for now this move should prompt other companies to consider how to be more transparent about the censorship restrictions they face.
Google's decision to release this information reveals with greater granularity what internet service providers have been saying for years - that governments are increasingly demanding censorship of Internet content and information about users.
As its new interactive map illustrates, this trend is global and affects users from nations with diverse political and socio-economic landscapes. Google's new tool also reveals that for some governments - notably China - mere disclosure of the requests is also subject to censorship. Most importantly, this information illustrates the need for collaborative approaches to the growing problem of Internet censorship. It is a problem that affects us all. As Secretary of State Clinton observed in her landmark speech on Internet freedom, this is about the kind of world we live in and whether all its citizens will have equal, unfettered access to information.
Google's censorship disclosure tool is far from perfect, as the company makes clear. The data is one dimensional and incomplete. There is no context provided and requests are aggregated rather than sourced to the relevant authority. That makes it difficult to compare countries or to draw useful conclusions, including about why Google has complied with such requests in the majority of instances. In addition, the data for some governments is either unavailable or subject to national legal restrictions on disclosure. Even so, Google deserves praise for its willingness to release the data that it has and to help all of us understand the kinds of challenges the company is facing every day.
The burning question - the one most everyone wants to know - is which governments make the most intrusive demands on Internet freedom and what that means for its citizens. We also want to know how companies assess these requests and respond and what those responses mean for users. It is this challenge that has led Human Rights First to join with Google and other companies to work toward greater transparency and shared solutions to Internet censorship and surveillance. The Global Network Initiative (GNI), a multistakeholder effort to address threats to Internet freedom, exists to help companies move from information gathering to assessment and action.
Though the GNI is at the beginning stages of implementation, it's headed in the right direction. We urge other companies in this sector to join this crucial effort to help defend Internet freedom.
This is a fight we intend to win and it's one that requires each of us to take a stand now.
