THE NOT MY pres drumpf / trump and NOT MY vp vance administration's lack of respect for the US Constitution and the rule of law is proof enough congress must pass the bipartisan privacy protections and critical reforms of FISA to stop warrantless surveillance of Americans. It will be better for our democratic Republic to let FISA lapse rather than pass FISA reauthorization with the drumpf / trump-vance Orwellian enhancements. Trump and Speaker Johnson are still scrambling to hold onto their powers to surveil Americans without a warrant.

Stephen Miller wanted to extend and expand government mass surveillance by "quietly" reauthorizing Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). It didn't work. Johnson tried to ram a vote through. It didn't work.^1,2 Now, Republicans are trying to water down any reform efforts to make them toothless.

A lot will be decided in the next few days before the April 30 FISA reauthorization deadline, and we must keep fighting for these critical privacy reforms.

Federal law enforcement and intelligence agencies exploit the “data broker loophole” to bypass privacy rights by purchasing our sensitive private information from data collection companies. They also use the “backdoor search loophole” to circumvent court orders and search through billions of communications. This is what's at stake over the next week.

Adding to the dangers of the government's domestic spying capabilities, the White House recently said it wants to use AI to collect and analyze "commercial bulk data on Americans, such as geolocation and web browsing data."³ It would be a terrifying expansion of the Trump administration's spying powers.

With the April 30 deadline looming, it's critical that we ramp up the pressure on members of Congress to follow through with reforms as Trump and Johnson get more desperate.

SO far, Pres Obama's second term has been a huge disappointment and a waste. I thought, and so volunteered a lot of time and donated more money than I should have to help get him reelected, believing he and his administration had had enough of the republican / tea-bagger obstructionism in Congress and would come out swinging and fight for the progressive Democratic platform he was reelected on. Not only has he totally embraced the fascist patriot act of the bush administration, he has expanded government spying in America. He and his administration, as well as like minded neo-cons in Congress and the media, defend the government's actions in the name of national security. Bull. If there was nothing wrong with what they have been doing and their plans to continue what they are doing they would not have taken the steps they did to keep their activities from the public. Government domestic spying is wrong, it is a violation of our civil liberties as established in the Bill of Rights in the American Constitution, and can not be justified in the name of national security. Ever since I found out the fbi has a file on me, started when I was in the 9th grade, I have doubted the government's intentions concerning national security. I love my country but I don't trust my government. My disappointment is that I have to maintain that attitude with Obama as president. From Credo....

We don’t believe he has the constitutional right to collect and examine the telephone records of virtually all Americans. But if he thinks that he has the authority to spy on Americans, he should acknowledge these programs and provide his legal rationale for them.‬ ‬ ‪Demand President Obama acknowledge these spying programs and provide a full legal justification for indiscriminately spying on Americans. Willie Manning Is Scheduled To Die. Shouldn't Mississippi Find Out If He's Innocent First?

Willie Manning was granted this Tuesday a stay of execution by the State Supreme Court. Mississippi was steamrolling toward execution despite compelling evidence that Willie Manning may be an innocent man.

Manning's case has many of the hallmarks of those of other innocent death row exonerees: false snitch testimony, junk science, and racial bias. The prosecutors in Manning's case, like in all too many cases, stacked the deck by systematically removing African-American jurors from Manning's trial. Manning, an African-American man, was convicted of the murders of two white college students.

Eye-tracking technology received new attention recently due to its inclusion in the Samsung Galaxy IV phone, where it can (with mixed results, according to reviewers) let users scroll the screen with their eyes or dim the screen when they look away. Clearly this is a technology that has the potential for a lot of clever applications. But what are the privacy implications?

FBI Documents Suggest Feds Read Emails Without a Warrant

New documents from the FBI and U.S. Attorneys’ offices paint a troubling picture of the government’s email surveillance practices. Not only does the FBI claim it can read emails and other electronic communications without a warrant—even after a federal appeals court ruled that doing so violates the Fourth Amendment—but the documents strongly suggest that different U.S. Attorneys’ offices around the country are applying conflicting standards to access communications content.

Last week served as yet another reminder of the threats posed to Americans' privacy by the post-Patriot Act surveillance state. According to the Department of Justice's annual report, FISA applications to the secretive Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC) in 2012 revealed a continued increase in the FBI's surveillance of Americans. The report covers the Bureau's requests for electronic and physical surveillance, secret court orders under Section 215 of the Patriot Act, and National Security Letters (NSLs).
