Shortly after the assassination attempt on Donald Trump, insiders claimed the former president was planning to "seize his moment by toning down his Trumpiness." You know, pivot. Make the case to voters that he isn't actually the hellhole of a human that Trump himself proves to be, over and over again.
Well, so much for that effort. On the final night of the Republican National Convention, Trump rambled for more than 90 minutes, lashing out with the same ugly lies to the point of genuine boredom. So I appreciated David Frum's bit of optimism this morning, a piece that argues that the Trump onstage in Milwaukee on Thursday should give Democrats confidence that they can beat Trump in November.
But it goes far beyond Trump's primetime performance. My colleagues were on the ground at the convention all week, producing a string of terrific reporting that gets to the heart of the GOP's misogyny, unhinged retribution fantasies, its disingenuous pro-labor rebrand, its creepy desire to see America established as a Christian nation, and its acquiescence to a right-wing tech billionaire.
Taken together, it's a recipe for an even more dangerous MAGA White House. In any event, kudos to my stellar colleagues for enduring four days at the RNC. I certainly could never do it!
