Fall Back or Spring Forward

Friends and colleagues,

The first obligation of any government is to keep its citizens safe and free.

Since the founding of the Republic, the arc of our history has been to provide greater safety for our citizens while continuing to secure and expand the civil rights of all citizens.  These fundamental principles are both American and Progressive and lie at the heart of our values as Democrats.

GOP's Legislative Throwback...

Unfortunately, some members of the Republican Party appear to be intent on racing back to the 1950s at an accelerating pace.  Consider some events just within the past two weeks.

Even with the recent horrific events at Newtown fresh in our minds, Senate Republicans demonstrated a stunning lack of political courage when they failed to support any legislation proposed to reduce gun violence.

...Is Grasping for the Past

On the social front, the GOP reaffirmed its opposition to marriage equality for all citizens.  Not to be outdone, in the Commonwealth the assault on women’s rights continues, with the latest installment being the misuse of hospital construction codes in an attempt to close women’s health care clinics in Virginia.

...And Rushing for the Dark Ages

Moreover, we had the spectacle of our own Attorney General petitioning the courts to reinstate Virginia’s 18th Century sodomy laws, which had previously been ruled unconstitutional.  Perhaps Republicans should abandon the elephant as their mascot and adopt a dinosaur in its place.

I Want to Fight for Our Future

My friends, progress is never a permanent condition, and unless we are prepared to fight for progress, we will not even keep the gains that we have made.  In the aftermath of the successful 2008 Presidential elections, we relaxed and we lost ground in many elections.  We cannot afford to repeat that experience.

Let’s get out the vote this year to support Democratic candidates at all levels. Other campaigns focus on endorsements — we focus on issues and  the only endorsement we seek is the endorsement of the voters.  I’m running to make a difference and I invite you to work with me to do the same.

Let’s get the job done.

DO THE DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATES FOR 86TH DISTRICT DELEGATE SUPPORT VIRGINIA DIVESTMENT FROM FOSSIL FUELS? 22MAR13

JENNIFER BOYSKO AND HERB KEMP are the Democratic candidates for Delegate to Richmond from the 86th District, which includes Herndon. Here is the e mail I sent them asking for their opinions on the Divest from Fossil Fuels campaign by 350.org. I have also e mailed the Mayor and Town Council of Herndon on this divestment campaign, see Will your city divest?& MY E MAIL TO HERNDON'S TOWN COUNCIL AND MAYOR & UPDATE ON KEYSTONE XL 22MAR13 http://bucknacktssordidtawdryblog.blogspot.com/2013/03/will-your-city-divest-update-on.html

Good Morning Jennifer & Herb,
Hope all is well with both of you, have been watching your campaigns and appreciate the e mails from both of you on issues facing all of us in the 86th District and all of Virginia.
I am forwarding this e mail on the latest 'Divest from Fossil Fuels' campaign from 350.org and would like to know if you, as our delegate in Richmond, would introduce or support and fight for legislation divesting Virginia from fossil fuel industry investments. I have also included links to the latest information on coal industry jobs and Green Energy / Technology jobs in Virginia. Looking forward to your positions on this issue.
Peace to both of you,
Craig

Dear Friends,
There are days when I get utterly preoccupied playing defense against the fossil fuel industry, trying to stop pipeline after frack well after coal port. It’s necessary work -- but there are also days when I remind myself we’ve got to go on offense too.
Today’s one of those days. We’re launching the next phase of our fossil fuel divestment campaign, bringing it off campus to include city, state, and town governments; religious denominations, museums, foundations -- anyone with an investment portfolio. If someone’s investing in the destruction of the future, we’re going to ask them to sell those shares.
Here’s how to get started. Our web-team has set up a new online petition tool that makes it easy for you to join up with a local campaign or start your own. These petitions will help you build up some local pressure, as well as start a local email list you can use for organizing (they’re so easy to use, even I can figure it out).
Click here to find or start a local divestment petition: www.GoFossilFree.org/start
Once you’ve got a petition going, it’s time to start organizing. Host a local meeting to get your group together, set up meetings with your key decision makers, make the case for divestment, and then figure out the type of pressure you’re going to need to get a victory. You’ll find some useful resources up on the GoFossilFree.org website -- and don’t hestitate to get in touch if you need help.
The first phase of this campaign, on American colleges and campuses, has exceeded everyone’s expectations. Inside Climate said it was “spreading like wildfire,” and writing in the Nation, Harvard student leader Chloe Maxmin said it was “engaging more students than any similar campaign in the past twenty years.” The fourth college to commit to make their portfolio fossil free -- College of the Atlantic in Maine -- divested last week, which is way ahead of our wildest hopes.
And truthfully, Phase 2 has been up and running quietly for a while: the City of Seattle has already announced plans to divest, and 6 conferences of the United Church of Christ have joined to urge the national denomination to do the right thing.
But now it’s going to get big fast, in no small part because a we’ve got a very talented new staff member, Jay Carmona, who will be running the battle. She’s worked in City Government, organized with our friends at Media Matters and Get Equal, and she plays to win. “Divestment is targeting the one thing that those companies can’t buy, which is their reputation,” she told Yale e360 earlier this week.
I’m pretty fired up too. The best arguments for divesting if you’re a city: “why would we spend millions putting up seawalls and so on, and at the same time invest in the companies making it necessary?” If you’re a church: “why are we doing business with an industry that’s running Genesis backwards?” If you’re -- well, if you’re a human being: “if it’s wrong to wreck the climate, it’s wrong to profit from that wreckage?”
I think those arguments will prevail. Not easily -- but no one ever said it was going to be easy. Just exciting! You can get started right here: www.GoFossilFree.org/start
Many thanks,
Bill
P.S. An update on the Keystone fight in the Senate from our political director Jason: "The vote on the pipeline could come today, tomorrow, or Saturday. Our work together is making an impact: offices report being flooded with calls telling them to vote no on KXL. A few Senators who were on the fence are now leaning our way -- and we have everyone who called to thank for that." We can't let our guard down, but I'd say that's good news. Our team will send another update in the near future!

News from the Herb Kemp for Delegate Campaign 22FEB13

HERB KEMP, Democratic candidate for Delegate from the 86th district. on sequestration and Virginia as well as the inability of the gop / tea-bagger (my description, not his) government in Richmond to deal realistically with the Commonwealth's budget, especially transportation, and taxes.

Slow Motion Train Wreck

Virginia Republicans Using the Same Old Losing Playbook As the National GOP

As I write this we find ourselves in a situation in which Republican intransigence of key financial issues threatens to damage our economy.  We’ve been watching the slow motion train wreck called sequestration unfold in DC and it looks increasingly likely that the sequester will ...
take effect on March 1st, with major Federal budget cuts rippling through the economy and causing major economic impact in Northern Virginia.  At the same time, as we look south to Richmond, the Transportation Bill remains undecided as the legislative session nears its ending.  Regardless of the final version that emerges, it is almost certain that the transportation bill will (1) fail to fully fund our transportation requirements, (2) fail to adequately address the transportation needs of Northern Virginia, and (3) draw some of its funding from the General Fund, which means taking money away from education.

Help Get Herb's Name on the Primary Ballot

We'll be at Panera Bread in Herndon on Sunday from noon to 2pm, collecting signatures to get Herb's name on the ballot. Bring a friend or family member who is a voter in the 86th District and sign the petition.

One problem is at the Federal level, the other is at the State level.  However, the problems share a common root cause: the refusal of the Republican Party to agree to raise the necessary revenue to address the needs of the people.

This is both bad fiscal policy and bad business, and needs to be reversed.   In order to do that, we need to continue to work to build Democratic majorities in our state and federal legislatures.  Join me in this campaign to restore a Democratic majority in our legislature.  Help me get to Richmond to represent your interests.

Let’s get the job done.

HERB KEMP; The President reminded us of the nobility of citizenship 13FEB13

A call by Herb Kemp, my friend and Democratic candidate to represent us (the 86th district) in the VA House of Delegates, to follow through on Pres Obama's call for all of us to meet our responsibilities as citizens....

Watching History Together

The President reminded us of the nobility of citizenship

Last night, we watched President Obama’s State of the Union address as I am sure all of you did.  We were fortunate to have nearly 50 fellow Democrats join us in our home to watch the speech and draw their inspiration from the President’s plan for the future.
I was particularly struck by his description of what it means to be a citizen of our Great Nation.  In the President’s words: "We are citizens.  It’s a word that doesn’t just describe our nationality or legal status.  It describes the way we’re made.  It describes what we believe.  It captures the enduring idea that this country only works when we accept certain obligations to one another and to future generations; that our rights are wrapped up in the rights of others; and that well into our third century as a nation, it remains the task of us all, as citizens of these United States, to be the authors of the next great chapter in our American story."

It is up to each of us to be the authors of our future, to protect and promote the kind of free and open society we want for ourselves and our children, both across the Nation and here in our Commonwealth.  Working together, we can do great things to advance our progressive agenda for a better American and a better Virginia.  Join me in this campaign to secure our future.

Let’s get the job done.

BOYSKO & KEMP ON TRANSPORTATION AND EDUCATION 7FEB13

COMMENTARY from the two Progressive Democratic candidates on the recent vote in Richmond on transportation and education funding.

You may not have heard, today the General Assembly voted on quite the scheme to fund transportation by diverting millions of dollars from our schools and healthcare system.  This cannot stand.  We can't let them pull a fast one on us and rob Peter to pay Paul.
Stand with me for change!  Contribute $5 or more right now.  Let’s work together for NOVA’s fair share of transportation funds and fiscally responsible solutions.  We cannot shortchange our children and most vulnerable residents.
One of the reasons I decided to run for the 86th District in the House of Delegates is because I have spent the past five years at the table identifying and planning the best land use and transportation solutions for our two proposed metro stations - Herndon and Innovation Center.  I understand the potential economic benefits this opportunity brings to us and to our community.  But also in my role for the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors I worked on issues relating to schools and human services.  Furthermore, as mom of two teenage daughters and PTSA member I know how important  it is to preserve those funds designated for these vital programs.
Do we have to trade our kids' well being for better roads?  NO!
We can do better. The 86th District needs a delegate who will fight for us, not  just follow suit with the governor's political gymmicks.
Stand with me for change!  Contribute $5 or more right now.  Let’s work together for NOVA’s fair share of transportation funds and fiscally responsible solutions that will not leave our children holding an empty purse.
Kind regards,
Jennifer

Republicans: Playing small ball with our great Northern Virginia economy

Killing the Golden Goose

Why are Commonwealth Republicans stalling the very economic engine that will sustain our future?

Many of you have heard me say that every election is about the future.  We envision a future that we want for ourselves and our children and we look for the leaders that can help take us there.  But reaching that future requires us to focus on the big issues.

Image of the Herb Kemp logo

In last Sunday’s Washington Post, an article by Peter Munson captured the importance of maintaining and pursuing a positive and expansive outlook on the future.

Regaining Our Positive Vision of the Future
As a Marine returning from war, he felt that he had come back to an America that had become more introspective, more concerned about security and stability than in pursuing the creative impulses that made us a great nation.  He lamented the fact that the nation seemed to be unable to come to agreement even on the need to invest in some of the most fundamental needs in our country, including infrastructure and education.   He urged us to regain our positive vision of the future, to “…exalt those who create value in our society: parents, teachers, workers, builders, entrepreneurs, innovators.”

Despite being the eighth wealthiest state in the nation, Virginia ranks 29th in teacher pay, 38th in state per-pupil funding, and earned a grade of C in public education funding from Quality Counts.

Not Cannibalizing Our Future
Our transportation system is under-funded by a billion dollars annually, yet our governor proposed a transportation plan that fails to cover the cost of putting our transportation plan back on track.
Moreover, the budget he proposed depends in part on taking $250 million from our already under-funded education system.

That budget cleared the House on Tuesday but in the Senate, State Senator Steve D. Newman has proposed an even more anemic transportation budget, which Mr. Cuccinelli has endorsed.  These actions represent the type of timid, short term thinking that we can no longer afford.

We need to focus on the big issues, the big ideas, and work hard to send progressives to Richmond to restore the kind of positive, creative spirit that we need to build a better future for ourselves and our children.

Focusing On What Matters
Our Nation and our Commonwealth are not great simply because we say they are — they are great to the extent that we work and invest and make them so.  In the words of Harry S. Truman:

“America was not built on fear.  America was built on courage, on imagination and an unbeatable determination to do the job at hand.”

It’s time to get the job done.  I need your support to get to Richmond to work these issues on your behalf.

We need both donations and volunteers.

JENNIFER BOYSKO AND HERB KEMP FOR 86TH DISTRICT DELEGATE TO RICHMOND

TWO progressive, committed Democrats are running for delegate from the 86th district. Jennifer Boysko http://www.jenniferboysko.com/ and Herb Kemp http://www.herbkempfordelegate.com/index.php  are both well qualified to represent us in Richmond. Both are friends of mine. One will win the 11 JUN 13 Democratic primary. I will have no problem supporting whoever wins the primary in June. Click the links to check out their campaigns, I hope you will become involved and support the candidate who best represents your views and opinions, and that you too will support the winner of the primary. Bottom line is the 86th district deserves more than just a nice delegate in the House. We deserve a delegate who will actively promote an agenda that is beneficial not only for the 86th district but one that benefits the entire Commonwealth. While we have problems and issue that need to be addressed here in northern Virginia, we are part of a state, and so our delegate should represent our interest in conjunction with the best interest of the entire state. Education (school construction, teacher and staff pay, Head Start), transportation (mass transit as well as roads, high speed rail, impact fees), the environment (the Bay, fracking, uranium mining, coal, renewable energy, off shore drilling) taxes (corporate, tax subsidies, personal, sales, tobacco and gas), civil liberties (voting rights, academic freedom, sexual orientation), civil rights, the social safety net (compliance with ACA,  administration of SNAP, unemployment, job retraining, housing assistance), immigration, public safety (police, firefighters, gun regulations) and ending the Commonwealth's war on women (choice, birth control) are all issues our delegate in Richmond should lead in addressing and not wait for the party to determine their position for them (the situation we have with our current representative). I look forward to the two candidates positions on these issues.
