Chaotic confirmation hearings open for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh

Opening statements began with wave after wave of protesters and a series of unsuccessful attempts by Democratic members of the Senate Judiciary Committee to delay the start of the hearings. The White House has refused to release of tens of thousands of documents related to Kavanaugh’s tenure in the George W. Bush White House. Read more.

Colin Kaepernick is the face of a new Nike “Just Do It” ad campaign

The former NFL quarterback tweeted an image of his face with the words, “Believe in something. Even if it means sacrificing everything.” The ad is part of a campaign commemorating the 30th anniversary of Nike’s slogan "Just Do It." According to The New York Times, Nike will produce new Kaepernick apparel, including a shoe and a T-shirt. Kaepernick became the lightning rod in the protest movement against racial injustice and police brutality two summers ago after deciding not to stand during the national anthem. Read more.

Devastating fire destroys 200-year-old National Museum of Brazil

A massive fire that engulfed Brazil's National Museum Sunday night destroyed many of the nation's most precious artifacts, including objects that tell the story of Brazil's past -- the first fossil discovered there, the oldest female skull found in the Americas and the nation's largest meteorite. Read more.

Tropical Storm Gordon headed for northern U.S. Gulf Coast

Gordon will likely strengthen into a hurricane before hitting the southern coastlines of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama on Tuesday night. Gordon's eye was heading toward an area around Gulfport, Miss., and the governors of the threatened states have declared emergencies to free up personnel and equipment ahead of the storm. Read more.

USA Gymnastics head Kerry Perry out amid abuse scandal

Kerry Perry, shown here testifying to lawmakers in May, has resigned from her post as USA Gymnastics President and CEO.

Perry had been on the job less than 10 months before her resignation. She has been under scrutiny as USA Gymnastics attempts to find its footing following a sexual abuse scandal by former team doctor Larry Nassar that involved more than 150 athletes. Nassar has been sentenced to decades in prison. Read more.
