Sea Shepherd E-News: What you can do for the oceans 1FEB13

HERE is the latest e mail newsletter from Sea Shepherd with a few important calls to action to support the work they do. Two involve We The People petitions. One of these is a petition calling on the US government to take action against the japanese whaling industry's whaling in the Southern Whale Sanctuary, violating international law covering the sanctuary. The second is calling on the US government to provide a  a safe haven for Capt Paul Watson in his ongoing legal battles with the German, and Costa Rican governments, Interpol and the shark fining industry. The persecution of Captain Watson has gone on long enough, and We The People have the right and responsibility to tell our government to grant him safe haven / sanctuary. Please sign the petitions. And there are others actions and updates in this newsletter, there is much to be done because Sea Shepherd is such an affective defender of our oceans and all who live in them.

Dear Friend of Sea Shepherd,

There's so much you can do to defend marine wildlife, no matter where you are in the world. Not everyone can join a Sea Shepherd campaign, and many people aren't able to financially support the conservation efforts so close to their hearts. In this edition of the Sea Shepherd E-News, we present many ways that you can make an impact for our mission and the animals at no cost to yourself.

If you are someone who is fortunate enough to be able to help finance our mission, please keep us in your heart. Your contributions are the very lifeblood that keeps our organization on top as the world's leading direct-action conservation non-profit. Each person in this world can do something to contribute to the greater good, whether it is a financial contribution and/or the contribution of your time and energy in person or even online. Have you thought about what you can do to help defend, conserve, and protect the oceans?
Save Whales and Help Captain Watson
The United States White House has created a modern and easy way for the people's voice to be heard. Official petitions can be created on their website, and once a petition receives 100,000 signatures it elicits an official response from the White House.
Sea Shepherd has created two very important petitions, one of which could provide safe haven for Captain Watson and the other asks the United States to take strong action to stop the Japanese from killing whales in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary. We only have until February 28th to reach the required number of signatures.

You don't have to be a US citizen to sign the petitions, but you do need to create a user account on their website. Help us!

Secret Rooftops Hiding Shameful Atrocities
Can you guess what those light and dark grey things on the roof of the building pictured below are? Each speck represents a shark's fin! In fact, you are looking at more than 10,000 shark fins drying on a roof in Hong Kong during the month of January! Gary Stokes, Sea Shepherd Hong Kong Coordinator, broke the story, garnering worldwide news coverage.

Sharks need protection now, and they need CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) to do the right thing and base their protection status on scientific facts rather than financial greed. Only when the killing and trade of this apex predator, which is so vital to the health of the oceans, become officially illegal will we see a stop to this atrocity. Learn more!
You Can Help Sea Shepherd Win €25,000!
The BiLLe Celeb Charity Challenge is a great way that you can be involved on a daily basis and help fund Sea Shepherd campaigns with a simple, free vote. It takes just two minutes to create an account, and then you can vote once a day (or as often as you are able) to help us secure the win!

Thanks to dedicated Sea Shepherd supporters around the world, we just won the January BiLLe Celeb Charity Challenge with a prize of €25,000! Our campaigns are very costly − and effective! What we do is not easy. Sea Shepherd works on the cutting edge of activism. We go where others dare not go and take on tasks that no one else has ever done, and we do it all within the boundaries of the law, and without causing harm to any sentient beings.

Yes, we push the envelope and we take chances, and we have been doing so for thirty-five years, but in that time we have achieved some amazing victories, yet there is still so much work to be done. We operate on a relatively small budget with a predominately volunteer crew, and we are able to do so much because of your generosity and compassion. Thank you for standing strong with Sea Shepherd. Your support inspires us to take action each and every day.

Not one single person, knowing the real truth and history behind this bloody trade, would ever in their right mind choose to support such cruelty.
