LEWIS BLACK on the insanity, hypocrisy and inaction on the issue of gun control in the U.S.
If there’s one calm, reasoned voice that’s been missing from the national debate on guns over the last few months, it has to be that of comedian and occasional contributor for The Daily Show Lewis Black. Black delivered one of his signature segment for the show Tuesday night, railing against celebrities who have tried to sway public opinion on guns from both the left and the right.
Black asked, “Why are we asking random celebrities about this issue anyway? When we should be asking more qualified people — our action heroes.” He reviewed how everyone from Sylvester Stallone and Bruce Willis to Chuck Norris and Steven Seagal have injected themselves into the guns debate.
Stallone has spoke out for an assault weapons ban while on tour to promote his new movie Bullet to the Head. And Willis recently went the other way, coming out against gun control.
Meanwhile, Chuck Norris is making PSA’s for less gun control, while Seagal has gone as far to train “armed posses” to protect Arizona schools.
“In the end,” Black said, “these guys are just doing what entertainers do best: providing us with a pleasant distraction from the fact that our actual lawmakers aren’t doing shit about this problem.”
