This Year, States Took the War on Uteruses to the Next Level 30DEZ15

Uterus
I am not pro abortion, but I am pro choice, because I believe a women should be able to choose for herself whether she continues her pregnancy or not. She has to live with her decision. I am completely disgusted with the self described right to lifers who claim to be protecting the sanctity of life by restricting access to abortion and then abandon the sacred life of the child by cutting funding for the social safety net programs a child may need and by cutting funding for all public programs that benefit all children and their families. The hypocrisy of the religious right wing is nauseating, and their callous abandonment of the less fortunate, those in need, along with their embrace of the gospel of greed (not found in any of Jesus Christ's teachings) is one of the reasons so many millennials no longer choose to identify with Christianity as their professed faith. republican politicians are guilty of double hypocrisy. The majority profess to be Christian but have no problem taking from and neglecting the poor and those in need. The also wail against big government and government intrusion into our private lives, the tyranny of the state, and then keep passing restrictions and regulations on women's private lives, because you women are so stupid you need to be protected from yourselves. MAKE SURE YOU ASK A MAN IF YOU CAN VOTE IN 2016 AND WHO YOU SHOULD VOTE FOR. This from +Mother Jones .....

Nearly 400 bills were introduced, and 57 of them became law.

| Wed Dec. 30, 2015 6:00 AM EST
Reproductive rights took a beating in 2015. According to a year-end report released by the Center for Reproductive Rights, nearly 400 anti-abortion bills were introduced across the country in 2015, up from 335 provisions introduced in 2014. The bills ranged from regulation of medication abortions to all-out bans on the most common method of second-trimester abortions, and the Guttmacher Institute reports 57 of them were enacted. The few pieces of good news can be found in access to contraceptives: Oregon became the first state this year to expand access to birth control medication by offering it over the counter for up to a year's supply, and California passed a law that allows women to get birth control directly from a pharmacist.
In the final days of 2015, Gov. Cuomo in New York signed legislation that permits pregnant women to enroll in the state's health insurance exchange at any point during the year by making pregnancy a "qualifying life event." For everyone without a qualifying life event, enrollment is only available from October through December. New York is the first state to pass such legislation.
But generally, the good news has been limited. Here are some of the most impactful state restrictions that became law this year—and that are likely to affect millions of women of reproductive age:
Medication abortion restrictions: Arkansas' HB 1578 requires providers to tell patients that the effects of the "abortion pill"—a drug called mifepristone, or RU-486, which is used in conjunction with another pill that is taken at home—can be reversed. This claim has been refuted by the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and in medical studies. In the same measure, abortion counselors are required to include in their sessions inaccurate information about fetal pain during the procedure and women's mental health problems after it. Multiple studies have debunked the claim that most women regret their abortions after the fact.
The state Legislature in Arkansas, which was ranked the second-worst state for women's and children's well-being by the Center for Reproductive Rights for its mass of restrictions this year, also passed laws banning telemedicine when it's used for medication abortion. The technology—involving video conferencing and an automated drawer that pops out and contains the medication—has allowed physicians to administer mifepristone remotely. This method is particularly beneficial for women who live in rural parts of the state and cannot afford the time or money to drive to a clinic in a metropolitan area.
Arkansas implemented an additional restriction on medication abortion that requires doctors prescribing mifepristone to adhere to the original FDA-approved dosage. This sounds reasonable, but it actually decreases the effectiveness of the drug and increases the likelihood of nasty side effects. (Molly Redden reported on increased restrictions around medication abortion in Mother Jones' September/October issue.) Idaho also passed laws banning telemedicine specifically when it's used for medication abortions by requiring physicians to be physically present while administering mifepristone. Doctors who administer the medication must also have admitting privileges at local hospitals or a written transfer agreement with another doctor who does have those privileges. These requirements often disqualify physicians from being able to offer abortion services.
Unprecedented bans against the most common procedure for second-trimester abortions: In April, Kansas passed legislation that made it the first state to explicitly restrict the most common procedure for second-trimester abortions. The wording of the law is ambiguous and does not use medical language—for example, it refers to the fetus as an "unborn child"—and it bans what is referred to as "dismemberment abortion." In the law, the procedure is defined as "knowingly dismembering a living unborn child and extracting such unborn child one piece at a time from the uterus." The focus of the law appears to be on the use of the dilation and evacuation method, a method considered by medical professionals to be the safest way to terminate a pregnancy, and which is used in most abortions after the 12th week of pregnancy. A Kansas district court judge, Larry Hendricks, blocked the law less than a week before it was to take effect, and the Kansas Court of Appeals heard oral arguments regarding the law's constitutionality in early December. However, because the case is being presented before all the appeals judges rather than the traditional three-judge panel, the timing for a final ruling is uncertain.
Oklahoma passed a similar law targeting dilation and evacuation abortions, using even more gruesome language. The law defines "dismemberment abortion"—a popular term among "right to life" advocates—as " purposely dismember[ing] a living unborn child and extract[ing] him or her one piece at a time from the uterus through use of clamps, grasping forceps, tongs, scissors or similar instruments that, through the convergence of two rigid levers, slice, crush, and/or grasp a portion of the unborn child's body to cut or rip it off." A temporary injunction in October was also applied by a judge in this case, and the law is pending a final ruling.
Waiting periods: North Carolina extended the waiting period from 24 hours to 72 hours, tripling the time between state-mandated abortion counseling and actually receiving an abortion. All 12 states in the Southeast have state laws that mandate a waiting period, with the exception of Florida, which tried to pass a 24-hour waiting period this year, but the law was blocked by a circuit court judge and is pending a final ruling. Oklahoma also passed a law that expanded the state's 24-hour mandatory waiting period to 72 hours.
Tennessee Legislature scales back abortion access: Amendment One, which passed in late 2014, amended the Tennessee state constitution to declare that it does not protect a woman's right to an abortion or funding for abortions (despite the well-known fact that state and federal dollars cannot legally be used to fund abortion, anyway). The amendment, which was one of the most expensive ballot measures in the state's history, gave state lawmakers more power to control abortion access and opened the door to a number of restrictive measures in 2015. Twelve bills restricting abortion access were presented before the Legislature this year, including a mandatory 48-hour waiting period. Also in Tennessee, a woman who attempted to self-induce a miscarriage in her bathtub after 24 weeks of pregnancy now faces a first-degree attempted murder charge.
Less than six months after Amendment One was approved, Tennessee also passed a law requiring clinics performing more than 50 surgical abortion procedures per year to meet standards of ambulatory surgery center, which basically amount to hospital standards. This is an example of a TRAP law (short for Targeted Regulation of Abortion Providers), which focus not on women seeking abortions but on the practitioners who provide them. The additional construction, infrastructure, and maintenance costs can bankrupt these providers, as Mother Jones has previously reported.
Parental consent: By adding yet another requirement, Arkansas' lawmakers tightened restrictions for women under the age of 18 who are seeking an abortion without parental consent. In order to waive the state's parental-consent requirement, these young women must go through a judicial bypass procedure in which they appear before a judge to receive permission to have the procedure. But they now must also undergo an "evaluation and counseling session with a mental health professional" so that a judge can rule whether there is "clear and convincing evidence" that a minor is mature enough for the procedure and that an abortion is in her best interests.  The law does not mandate any kind of time limit on the court proceedings, so it's possible a slow-moving petition could delay a teen's pregnancy until it is illegal for her to go through with the abortion. The law also requires that a minor file the petition in a court in the county where she resides, further compromising her privacy.
Ban after 20 weeks: This year, West Virginia became the 15th state to ban abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy. Although the governor vetoed the legislation, the state Legislature overrode his veto and passed the bill into law. The law is especially restrictive, offering no exceptions for victims of rape or incest, and it only provides a highly limited exception for women whose lives are endangered by their pregnancy or for fetal abnormalities. Arkansas lawmakers passed a similar ban on abortions after 12 weeks, but the measure was struck down in the US Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit. "By banning abortions after 12 weeks' gestation, the act prohibits women from making the ultimate decision to terminate a pregnancy at a point before viability," the appeals court said.
Elizabeth Nash, a state policy analyst at the Guttmacher Institute, said that even though 2015 was a tough year, it could get worse in 2016. "In 2016, abortion restrictions are again expected to be on the front burner in many state legislatures," Nash said. "It does not appear that the pending US Supreme Court case is slowing down abortion opponents. We expect to see a host of abortion restrictions in 2016, including restrictions related to medication abortion, bans on abortion in the second trimester and TRAP laws including the disposal of aborted tissue."

Health care decisions belong to us, not our bosses 18MAR14

NO employer should be able to impose their beliefs about birth control or any aspect of our health care on their employees. Click the link to add your name to the +Planned Parenthood banner that will be displayed outside the +U.S. Supreme Court on 25 MAR 14.....

On March 25, lawyers that represent for-profit corporations will stand before the Supreme Court and argue that corporations should have the legal right to deny their workers access to insurance coverage for birth control based on their boss's personal religious beliefs.

It's outrageous. You know it as well as we do: birth control is basic, preventive health care. Yet people with views that are far outside the mainstream are still trying to take this benefit away from women — and we must fight back.

So we're gathering at the Supreme Court to make sure the Justices hear us loud and clear: health care decisions belong to us, not our bosses.

Even if you can't join us in person, we need you with us.  In fact we're setting a goal that, along with our coalition partners, we will gather 200,000 names. Just click here to automatically add your name to the giant banner we'll be unfurling on the steps of the Supreme Court.

Support birth control access. Click here to automatically add your name to the banner.

The added danger in these cases is the slippery slope they could create. If the Supreme Court rules in favor of the bosses it could open the door for corporations to make other important medical decisions for their employees, such as access to vaccinations, sexual health screenings, end of life care — anything they claim to find personally objectionable.

This is a watershed moment that could have an impact for generations to come — so it's critical that we show the Supreme Court and our opponents that we won't sit silently while they debate rolling back our rights. It will be such a powerful statement to have 200,000 names on the steps of the Supreme Court with the 1,000 activists who will be there in person. We need 200,000 people to add their names so we can make a big impact on the 25th — will you be one? Stand with us — add your name right now.

And this is just the beginning. In the weeks to come, we'll be calling on you to help us spread the word, and stand together to show the Court just how many people are counting on them to protect our basic right to health care.

Thanks for joining us at this critical time — I'm glad we have you with us.

Sincerely,

Cecile Richards, President

Federal Judge Says N.C. Ultrasound Abortion Law Is Illegal 17JAN14

AS ignorant as their state legislators are, there is still hope for North Carolina as long as there are judges like US Dist Judge Catherine Eagles on the bench. I suggest the N Carolina legislature consider the hypocrisy of their claim of being pro life and adequately fund the social safety net, education, unemployment benefits, and job training and stimulus programs that provide for and benefit the children and their families and the lives of all North Carolinians. Take action to improve the lives of the people of North Carolina and you will see a dramatic reduction in the number of abortions in your state. From NPR....
A controversial North Carolina law requiring women who want to have an abortion to undergo an ultrasound scan is illegal, according to a federal judge's ruling issued Friday. The state's law required that the women have a medical professional tell them what the image depicts. It also said the women should "listen to the heartbeat of the unborn child."
U.S. District Judge Catherine Eagles issued her ruling in Greensboro, N.C., where the reports the judge "called the law 'overbroad,' and said it didn't sufficiently protect women who didn't want to be exposed to that information."
After the law took effect in 2011, Eagles issued an injunction that blocked the ultrasound requirement, citing reservations over enlisting medical providers to deliver a "non-medical message to patients unwilling to hear or see," as North Carolina's reported.
The judge echoed those ideas in today's ruling.
"It is an impermissible attempt to compel these providers to deliver the state's message in favor of childbirth and against abortion," Eagles said, according to the News Observer.
Titled the , the law was linked to controversy from its early days. After lawmakers initially approved it in 2011, the law was vetoed by Gov. Bev Purdue. But the two chambers of North Carolina's Republican-led Assembly voted to overrule the veto.
From the AP:
"Eagles had put the law on hold a few months after the Republican-led state legislature passed the law in 2011. She said then that providers did not have to place an ultrasound image next to a pregnant woman so she can view it, describe its features and offer the patient the chance to listen to the heartbeat."
News of Eagles' decision was — Planned Parenthood, the American Civil Liberties Union, and the Center for Reproductive Rights.

This is heartbreaking, Sign the Petition: Stop this Inhumane Bill 6NOV13

I get so disgusted by these hypocritical politicians who feel they have the right to legislate their "morality" based on claims of being people of faith (in this case Christian) while their record is one of voting against, blocking and de-funding social welfare programs that provide for children and their families. Where is the morality, the Christianity in that? Besides their blatant religious hypocrisy they also treat women like chattel, think they are too dumb to make their own decisions concerning their bodies and their health care. This legislation is nothing but political grandstanding to mollify the repiglicans and tea-baggers seeking to impose "christian" sharia law on the rest of us. Please sign this petition to the Senate demanding they vote against fotze sen lindsey graham's bill. From UltraViolet and Daily Kos...
Senator Lindsey Graham is introducing an extremely cruel and inhumane abortion ban bill in the Senate. Sign the petition telling the Senate: no more attacks on women, block Graham's bill!

Extreme conservatives in the Senate are about to introduce a sweeping ban on abortion. Here's one family who's already been hurt by this type of law:
Danielle and Robb Deaver were "over the moon" about Danielle's pregnancy until her water broke at 22 weeks. They were heartbroken to learn their baby would not develop further or survive, but that heartbreak was compounded when doctors told them they couldn't end their nightmare and induce labor because their state bans abortion after 20 weeks. Doctors had to wait for Danielle to get sick or for the baby to die before they could do anything. When baby Elizabeth was finally born, she survived for only 15 minutes.1
Senator Lindsey Graham is planning to introduce a national bill this week that criminalizes abortions after 20 weeks.2 When politicians introduce these inhumane bans on abortions, they are tying the hands of doctors who want to help couples like the Deavers. Less than 2% of abortions occur after 20 weeks, and many of them are for heartbreaking reasons that no one should ever have to face.3
Texas, North Dakota, and Arkansas have all passed 20-week abortion bans this year, and so has the House in Congress.4 If we don't make a stand against Sen. Graham's bill in the Senate, more states will be emboldened to pass these inhumane laws. We have to make sure that conservatives everywhere know we won't stand for this.
Tell the Senate: You have no right to legislate our medical decisions. Enough with the attacks on women. Block Graham’s inhumane and extreme abortion ban bill.
Add your name to the petition.
Extreme attempts to criminalize abortion after 20 weeks aren’t new. Multiple states have already passed such laws, including Texas most recently. But Sen. Graham's bill is unconstitutional, and it directly contradicts Roe v. Wade. A federal appeals court threw out Arizona's ban in May. Courts have also overturned similar laws in Idaho and Georgia.5
What’s worse are the heartbreaking stories of women who needed to abort their much-wanted pregnancies after 20 weeks. We received some of these stories during the battle in Texas from UltraViolet members. There was Kathy, a military wife with 3 college degrees and already a mother of 2 wonderful boys. At the 20-week ultrasound for her 3rd baby, the doctors found a severe case of spina bifida, “the worst they had ever seen.” She and her husband chose to terminate for the sake of their family. Kathy wrote that she still grieves but knows it was the right choice.
Doctors are also speaking out against these extreme bills. The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has resoundingly opposed such legislation and told politicians to get out of their exam rooms.6
These extreme bills are not about women’s health or the lives of healthy babies. They are not about good and safe medicine. They are about extreme politicians who think they know better than women and our doctors about what’s right for our families. We need to make a national stand against this inhumane extremism.
Tell the Senate: stop your attacks on women and our families; stop Graham's extreme abortion ban bill.
Sign the petition.
Thanks for speaking out.

Spread the Word: Ken Cuccinelli & Tom Rust Won't Fool Virginia Voters...VOTE FOR JENNIFER BOYSKO 18OKT13

ken cuccinelli is running scared. As his right wing extremist views, especially those on women, become known the voters of Virginia are turning away from him. tom rust r 86th is scared too. He has been a republican / tea-bagger lap dog in Richmond, and since he is not denouncing cuccinelli's agenda he is seen as supporting it, and rightly so. The people of the 86th district are discovering tom rust has not been representing us in the House of Delegates, he has been doing as he is told by the party leadership and supporting the regressive platform of cuccinelli and the tea-baggers in Richmond. JENNIFER BOYSKO D is nobody's lapdog, she will represent all the people of the 86th district and work in the Commonwealth Assembly with all members for the benefit of all Virginians. We need to elect Jennifer Boysko for the good of our district and Virginia!

It’s less than three weeks from Election Day, and Ken Cuccinelli has become desperate. Not surprisingly, Cuccinelli’s extreme positions on women’s health are not popular. Recent polls show him trailing among women voters by 24 points. So now, he’s outright misleading Virginians about where he stands on women’s health in every interview, forum, and channel available to him.
Will you help us spread the word on Ken Cuccinelli’s dangerous record and agenda by sharing this with your friends on Facebook and Twitter or by forwarding this message to them?
Here's more on what a ken cuccinelli / tom rust administration would look like.....

We know what his positions are, and we’re not going to be fooled. Here’s his ACTUAL record:
  • Ken Cuccinelli opposes abortion even in the cases of rape, incest, and health of the woman.
  • He co-sponsored so-called “personhood” legislation that, if enacted, could interfere with personal, private, medical decisions relating to birth control, access to fertility treatment, management of a miscarriage, and access to safe and legal abortion. He wants your boss to decide whether you get affordable access to birth control or not.
  • He supported targeted restrictions of abortion providers (TRAP) that have caused health centers to close.
  • Ken Cuccinelli would cut women off from Planned Parenthood’s preventive health services, which see more than 24,000 women and men every year.

Tell Ken Cuccinelli: We're Not Fooled 3SEP13

ken cuccinelli, the repiglican tea-bagger candidate for governor has mounted a dishonest, deceptive and manipulative campaign in an attempt to make the women believe he is not a threat to their very personal decisions on birth control and types of contraception. Nothing could be farther from the truth. He is a threat to women. His life long political philosophy has been to impose "christian" sharia on society in general, and especially on women. Best for cucccinelli would be for the status of women to revert to the early 1800's, with no rights, no protections, no ability to make any decisions for themselves. So here is a chance for all women and men to tell cuccinelli what you think of him and his policies, Just click the link., and share with women and men all across Virginia. And you might be interested in my earlier post about cuccinelli at

Planned Parenthood Advocates of Virginia

Recently, Ken Cuccinelli claimed he doesn't “think government should be doing anything about birth control or birth control devices,” and that he has “never supported legislation that invades people’s choices about contraception.”
Really? But what about supporting “personhood” legislation that if enacted, could interfere with personal, private, medical decisions relating to birth control? In reality, Ken Cuccinelli has spent his entire career trying to prevent Virginia women from accessing birth control and other preventive care.
Join us in telling Ken Cuccinelli we aren’t fooled by his false statements on birth control.
Ken Cuccinelli has finally figured out that voters oppose his out-of-touch agenda that would limit women’s right to access birth control. And now that Ken’s positions are proving to be too extreme for voters, he’s resorting to misleading them about his own record.
But we’re not going to let him get away with it. Let’s tell Ken Cuccinelli: we know your record on women’s health and you’re going to have to run on it.
Thanks for your continued support in helping us keep Ken out this November.

Ross Perot just donated $1 million to Planned Parenthood 30AUG13

THIS is great news for Planned Parenthood and the women of Texas. Thank you Ross & Margot Perot!!!! From Salon....

Ross Perot just donated $1 million to Planned Parenthood Ross Perot
Thousands of women have lost access to vital healthcare since Texas dismantled its Medicaid-funded Women’s Health Program in 2011 because Planned Parenthood acted as a service provider under the program. As a result of these cuts, and the persistent targeting of reproductive health clinics by anti-choice lawmakers, many clinics have been forced to close in recent years, leaving Texas women without low- and no-cost options for reproductive healthcare.
Enter: Ross Perot.
The Perot Foundation of Dallas, which was founded by the billionaire and former presidential candidate, announced this week that it would be donating $1 million to the beleaguered women’s health provider to help serve the women of Texas.
“For nearly 100 years Planned Parenthood has helped to educate men and women regarding family planning and general family health,” said Margot Perot in a written statement. “Our family has supported this nonprofit for many years because we are impressed with the work they do — providing birth control; scientifically based education; breast health exams; and basic, life-saving healthcare for women who cannot afford services otherwise.”

“We also recognize the need to further inform the public of the mission of this great organization and the need to support it at this critical time,” she added.
Planned Parenthood of North Texas CEO Kenneth Lambrecht thanked the Foundation in a statement, saying, “We are thrilled that this generous gift will enable us to continue providing basic, preventive health care. Thanks to the generosity of The Perot Foundation and other community members, Planned Parenthood is proud to be here for the Texans who count on us, no matter what.”

The White House’s contraceptives compromise 1FEB13

THE right wing hypocrites who claim to be pro life and then fight tooth and nail against adequate funding for pro life social safety net programs benefiting children and their families will twist this into some sort of victory, but as long as the women who work at these institutions still have unrestricted access to insurance plans that provide birth control at no cost to the patient we know who really won. From Planned Parenthood and the Washington Post....
President Obama is holding the line on making no-cost birth control available to women no matter where they work. Now it's our turn. The administration has 60 days to collect public comments on the rule -- I made mine in support and I need you to add yours right now.http://ppaction.org/bc2013

By Sarah Kliff

The Obama administration proposed broader latitude Friday for religious nonprofits that object to the mandated coverage of contraceptives, one that will allow large faith-based hospitals and universities to issue plans that do not directly provide birth control coverage.
Their employees would instead receive a stand-alone, private insurance policy that would provide contraceptive coverage at no cost.
138670139
The new proposal aims to find middle ground between faith-based nonprofits that have a religious opposition to contraceptives and women’s health advocates who vociferously supported the required coverage of birth control without co-payment.
It could also breathe new life into lawsuits filed against the Affordable Care Act’s contraceptive requirement, some of which were put on hold until the Obama administration clarified its policy on the issue.
Under this proposal, objecting nonprofits will be allowed to offer employees a plan that does not cover contraceptives. Their health insurer will then automatically enroll employees in a separate individual policy, which only covers contraceptives, at no cost. This policy would stand apart from the employer’s larger benefit package.
The faith-based employer would not “have to contract, arrange, pay or refer for any contraceptive coverage to which they object on religious grounds.”
The Affordable Care Act initially required all employers to cover contraceptives as part of a larger package of preventive health benefits for women. Some religious groups opposed the requirement, which they argued would force them to go against their faith-based beliefs. Houses of worship would be exempt.
Last February, the Obama administration announced an accommodation to faith-based nonprofits: A third-party insurance company would cover the cost of contraceptive coverage.
Religious leaders derided the policy as an “accounting gimmick,” arguing that the premiums they pay to a health insurer could ultimately end up paying for the contraceptives they opposed.
The compromise also did not address large companies that self-insure, footing the entire bill for their employees’ health care rather than paying premiums to an health insurance plan. The Obama administration outlined a number of policy suggestions in March that could address those concerns. It included proposals such as contracting with a national insurance plan to provide coverage or tapping into other pots of federal dollars.
Under the policy proposed Friday, self-insured plans opting out of contraceptive coverage would notify the company that administers their health benefits. That third-party administrator would then be responsible for arranging “separate individual health insurance policies for contraceptive coverage from an issuer providing such polices.”
Insurers who create these plans for self-insured companies will receive an offset from the federal government: Lower fees to sell plans on the new health exchanges run by the Obama administration.
Private employers and faith-based nonprofits have filed more than 40 lawsuits against the contraceptive mandate. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit ruled in January that it would hold a legal challenge from two colleges, Belmont Abbey in Belmont, N.C. and Wheaton College in Wheaton, Ill., “in abeyance” as the Obama administration worked to issue these new rules.
Reaction from institutional Catholicism seemed cautious. Cardinal Timothy Dolan, leader of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops – essentially the spokesman for the U.S. church – used the term “welcome” to describe how bishops and their lawyers would review the new regulations.
“Today, the Administration issued proposed regulations regarding the HHS mandate.  We welcome the opportunity to study the proposed regulations closely. We look forward to issuing a more detailed statement later,” Dolan said in a midday statement Friday.
Reactions also reflected the huge diversity within Catholicism of this issue.
University of Notre Dame, a key barometer of American Catholicism, said in a statement officials wouldn’t comment until they’d studied the proposal more closely. Notre Dame stirred the ire of traditional Catholics when it honored President Obama in 2009 by giving him an honorary degree and hosting him as commencement speaker. Three years later, the school joined dozens of other mostly Catholic non profits in suing the administration over the mandate.
More liberal Catholic figures – who are statistically more in line with the contraception practices of most American Catholics – applauded the White House Friday.
“HHS and the administration have gone out of their way to resolve the concerns of religious institutions that object to covering contraceptives in their insurance programs,” said the Rev. Thomas Reese, former editor of prominent Catholic magazine America and a well-known writer. “They have also found creative ways to provide contraceptives to the employees of religious colleges and hospitals without the involvement of these institutions.”
The Becket Fund, which represents most of the non-profits suing the White House over the mandate, said the new rule “does nothing to protect the religious liberty of millions of Americans.” However the same statement noted the firm “continues to study what effect, if any, the Administration’s proposed rule has on the many lawsuits” involving Becket’s clients, including Catholic news organization EWTN, evangelical Wheaton College and Ave Maria University.
Many women’s health groups quickly supported the new policy.
“Today’s draft regulation affirms yet again the Obama administration’s commitment to fulfilling the full promise of its historic contraception policy,” NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue said. “Thanks to this commitment, most American women will get birth-control coverage without extra expense.  Increased access to birth control is a huge win for women and is necessary to prevent unintended pregnancy — a goal on which both pro-choice and anti-choice people ought to agree.”

VA A.G. Ken Cuccinelli: Don't let bosses deny women birth control 29JAN13

VIRGINIA A.G. ken cuccinelli continues his war on women, telling employers to break the law and deny women access to birth control in health care plans. He actually equates this to civil disobedience a la the civil right movement. And while he claims to be pro life he supports cuts to social safety net programs in Virginia that improve the quality of life for children and entire families. His hypocrisy knows no bounds, he is blinded by his extreme right wing social engineering, and wants to bring his "christian" sharia form of government to the Commonwealth as our next governor! Please sign the petition to cuccinelli and gov mcdonnell demanding enforcement of the ACA in Virginia including a woman's access to birth control.

Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli is far out of the mainstream when it comes to women's health. His entire career has been an exercise in trying to reduce and deny women access to care. He has co-sponsored "personhood" measures that would give full legal rights to fertilized eggs, supported defunding Planned Parenthood, and was the first attorney general to file a lawsuit to overturn the Affordable Care Act (ACA)—on the same day the bill was signed into law.
Now, he's trying to find ways to deny women access to birth control by letting your boss decide whether you get coverage through the ACA. What's outrageous is that he is invoking the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to support his position, saying that employers who want to deny women access to birth control should engage in civil disobedience.
In fact, Dr. King was among the first recipients of Planned Parenthood's Margaret Sanger Award, and he said of health care inequality: "Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health care is the most shocking and inhumane." Of course, Dr. King's words are the opposite of what A.G. Cuccinelli supports.
Nearly 1.4 million women in Virginia are potentially at risk of losing coverage if Cuccinelli has his way.
That's why I created a petition on SignOn.org to Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli and Governor Bob McDonnell, which says:
Allowing employers to deny women access to birth control isn't a civil right, it's discrimination. Stop comparing the civil rights movement to denying women health care. Stop standing in the way of health care for Virginia women.
Thanks!

Virginia Mandatory Ultrasound Law's Repeal Blocked By State GOP 17JAN13

SO many of the repiglicans and tea-baggers are so hypocritical about the sanctity of life it makes me sick. They pass laws restricting abortion and birth control and then pass laws cutting and denying funding of vital child and family social safety net programs. The speak of women in the most ignorant terms, so ignorant in fact I am amazed some of them were able to father children. I have come to believe that most of them probably hate their mothers and woman in general and long for the days when women were little better off than slaves, when men were able able to tell women what to do, when and where, and didn't have to worry about the legal and political consequences or their comments or decisions. The war on women continues in Virginia, men continue to degrade them by passing restrictions and limitations on what should be among the most difficult and personal decisions a woman would have to make. But I also believe that some of these men's mothers, seeing and hearing their son's attitude on women, secretly wish they had had a choice.......This from HuffPost......
A Republican-controlled committee in the Virginia State Senate voted 8-7 on Thursday to block Democrats' efforts to repeal a new mandatory ultrasound law and a set of regulations that could shut down many abortion clinics in the state. The committee also voted down a new anti-abortion bill that would have prevented Medicaid from paying for low-income women's abortions in cases where there is a severe fetal anomaly.
Virginia Republicans attracted national criticism in early 2012 when they proposed a bill requiring women to undergo invasive, medically unnecessary transvaginal ultrasound procedures before having an abortion. Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) laterhelped Republicans revise the bill to require only external, "jelly-on-the-belly" procedures, and he signed that version into law.
State Sen. Ralph Northam (D), the only physician in the senate, proposed a bill that would repeal the mandatory ultrasound law because he says it violates the privacy and sanctity of the doctor-patient relationship. "I am giving you the opportunity to right the wrong committed last year," he told committee members on Thursday.
The Medical Society of Virginia and the Virginia American College of Obstetricians testified in favor of repealing the ultrasound bill, echoing Northam's concerns.
Victoria Cobb, president of the Family Foundation of Virginia and a top anti-abortion lobbyist, also testified at the hearing. She accused abortion providers of "hiding the picture" of the ultrasound from women in order to prevent them from changing their minds and to increase profits, according to The American Independent's Reilly Moore.
The Senate Health and Education Committee voted along party lines to block the repeal of the ultrasound law, as well as the repeal of a set of abortion clinic regulations, known as Targeted Regulation of Abortion Providers, or TRAP. The law requires that first-trimester abortion clinics meet the same building standards as newly constructed hospitals.
State Sen. Mark Herring (D), the sponsor of the bill to repeal the TRAP law, said he is going to continue fighting to keep the clinics open. "What [the committee] did was wrong," he told The Huffington Post. "I think the votes today indicate that Republicans still have an extreme agenda, and they're intent on reducing access to women's health care."
The committee also voted down an anti-abortion bill on Thursday. One Republican on the committee, State Sen. Harry Blevins (R), crossed over and voted with Democrats to kill a bill that would have banned state-subsidized abortions for women with severely impaired fetuses.

Obama fires up crowd in Virginia with ‘Romnesia’ speech 19OKT12

I really wish I could have been there to hear him myself, it is not only the best of the campaign so far it is the perfect explanation of just what mitt robme romney and lyin' paul ryan are spreading across the country in a desperate attempt to salvage their campaign of lies, misrepresentation, misleading and deception. From the Washington Post....

By , Published: October 19

President Obama introduced a new word into the American political lexicon Friday, accusing his GOP opponent, Mitt Romney, of “Romnesia” for changing positions and trying to pivot to the political center.
Before nearly 10,000 supporters at a Virginia rally, Obama smiled, joked and wagged his finger as he mocked Romney’s earlier declaration that he was a “severely conservative” governor of Massachusetts.
“Now that we’re 18 days out from the election, ‘Mr. Severely Conservative’ wants you to think he was severely kidding about everything he said over the last year,’’ Obama said in a speech devoted almost entirely to attacking Romney, and during which he gave little indication of what he would do in a second term if reelected.
Building in intensity, Obama continued: “He’s forgetting what his own positions are, and he’s betting that you will, too. I mean, he’s changing up so much and backtracking and sidestepping. We’ve got to — we’ve got to — we’ve got to name this condition that he’s going through. I think — I think it’s called ‘Romnesia.’ ”
The crowd roared.
The Romney campaign was not amused. “America doesn’t need a comedy routine; it needs a serious plan to fix the economy,’’ Romney senior adviser Danny Diaz wrote on Twitter.
Added Amanda Henneberg, a Romney spokeswoman: “Women haven’t forgotten how we’ve suffered over the last four years in the Obama economy with higher taxes, higher unemployment, and record levels of poverty. President Obama has failed to put forward a second-term agenda — and when you don’t have a plan to run on, you stoop to scare tactics.’’
The renewed skirmishing came as the other candidates converged on the key swing state of Florida ahead of Monday’s final presidential debate in Boca Raton, which is shaping up as critical in a race that polls show is tight nationally and in battleground states.
Vice President Biden and Romney’s running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), spent their Friday rallying supporters in the Sunshine State, whose 29 electoral votes make it the biggest swing state prize. At one point, Ryan’s campaign jet rolled across the tarmac in Tampa past Biden’s Air Force Two.
Ann Romney and Michelle Obama, both important surrogates as the campaigns battle for an edge among women voters, have events scheduled for South Florida in the coming days. Female voters are a critical bloc that could determine who is elected on Nov. 6, and recent polls have shown Romney cutting into Obama’s lead among them.
With the economy still the key issue in the race, Obama got some potentially good news on Friday: New data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics showed that the unemployment rate dropped in 41 states last month, including many of the top swing states. Those included Florida, Colorado and Iowa. Yet Florida’s rate, at 8.7 percent, remains higher than the national average, and unemployment is still high across the country.
Romney prepared for the debate Friday morning in New York before flying to Florida. where he appeared with Ryan at a rally in Daytona Beach in the evening.
They spoke to a crowd of thousands of supporters who were warmed up to the singing of country music star John Rich of the group Big and Rich.
Romney said that Obama’s reelection effort has become the “incredibly shrinking campaign.”
“Have you been watching the Obama campaign lately. It’s absolutely remarkable,” Romney said. “They have no agenda.”
But speaking to the tightness of this race, even as Ryan and Romney spoke, a crowd of Obama supporters gathered and shouted “Obama. Four More Years,” drowning out parts of Romney’s 20-minute speech.
Romney’s debate partner, Sen. Rob Portman, as well as top advisers Stuart Stevens, Beth Myers and Dan Senor joined him on the flight to Florida.
It was Romney’s commanding performance in the first presidential debate two weeks ago — along with Obama’s widely panned showing — that reconfigured a race in which the president had been ahead.
Romney on Friday released a new television ad titled “Bringing People Together.” It emphasized his bipartisan credentials, though some Democrats in Massachusetts say Romney worked only sporadically with them during his governorship. But the Romney campaign also apparently senses vulnerability on the subject for Obama, whose political brand in his 2008 campaign was built around his ability to transcend partisan divides.
Yet it was a highly partisan president who spoke on Friday in an open field at George Mason University in the critical battleground state of Virginia. Obama drew chants of “Four more years!” as he bounded onto a podium draped with two blue signs reading “Women’s Health Security.’’
Obama portrayed Romney as a “throwback to the 1950s” who would restrict women’s rights, favor the wealthy and squeeze the middle class.
During his riff on what he called “Romnesia,’’ Obama said: “I’m not a medical doctor, but I — but I do want to go over some of the symptoms with you because I want to make sure nobody else catches it.’’
The crowd hooted.
Obama then listed a series of what he called position changes by Romney, focusing on women’s issues. “You know, if you say you’re for equal pay for equal work, but you keep refusing to say whether or not you’d sign a bill that protects equal pay for equal work, you might have ‘Romnesia,’ ’’ Obama said. “If you say women should have access to contraceptive care, but you support legislation that would let your employer deny you contraceptive care, you might have a case of ‘Romnesia.’ ”
The president drew his loudest applause by bringing up the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. Chuckling, he said: “If you come down with a case of ‘Romnesia’ and you can’t seem to remember the policies that are still on your Web site, or the promises that you’ve made over the six years you’ve been running for president, here’s the good news: Obamacare covers preexisting conditions.’’
“We can fix you up. We’ve got a cure. We can make you well, Virginia. This is a curable disease.’’

Wisconsin Lawmaker Claims ‘Some Girls Rape Easy’ 10OKT12

WHAT is it with these repiglicans and tea-baggers? How is it they can have so little or even no respect for girls and women. One has to wonder what the lives of the women in their lives is like, what kind of misery they experience daily, and probably resent to the point they become silent victims of the boys and "men" who control them or raging Schlempe a la queen ann romney, ann coulter, michelle bachman and Fotze sarah palin. This from ThinkProgress...
Roger Rivard with Paul Ryan
A Wisconsin state lawmaker endorsed by Paul Ryan has come under criticism for suggesting that “some girls rape easy.” While discussing a case in which “a 17-year-old high school senior was charged with sexual assault for having sex with an underage girl in the school’s band room,” State Rep. Roger Rivard (R) told the Chetek Alert newspaper in December that his father taught him that some girls will portray a sexual encounter as rape if they become pregnant. He is now claiming that those remarks were taken out of context and has issued a statement condemning sexual violence:
On Wednesday, Rivard told the Journal Sentinel the article did not provide full context of his comments and that his father’s exact words had been slightly different from how they appeared in the Chetek Alert.
He told the Journal Sentinel that his father had advised him not to have premarital sex, and he took that seriously.
“He also told me one thing, ‘If you do (have premarital sex), just remember, consensual sex can turn into rape in an awful hurry,’ ” Rivard said. “Because all of a sudden a young lady gets pregnant and the parents are madder than a wet hen and she’s not going to say, ‘Oh, yeah, I was part of the program.’ All that she has to say or the parents have to say is it was rape because she’s underage. And he just said, ‘Remember, Roger, if you go down that road, some girls,’ he said, ‘they rape so easy.’
“What the whole genesis of it was, it was advice to me, telling me, ‘If you’re going to go down that road, you may have consensual sex that night and then the next morning it may be rape.’ So the way he said it was, ‘Just remember, Roger, some girls, they rape so easy. It may be rape the next morning.’
“So it’s been kind of taken out of context.”
Ryan endorsed Rivard on August 9, just two days before he was selected to be Mitt Romney’s running mate. “Roger needs to be reaffirmed to get this job done and fix the State of Wisconsin,” Ryan said.

Romney's Remarks On Abortion Cause A Stir 10OKT12

ONE might say the flip-flopper is back, but this is actually more like mitt robme romney playing the electorate, this time women, for votes while keeping his real political agenda hidden. Just consider how he ran for governor of Massachusetts, presenting the moderate romney to voters and then governing as the extreme right wing social engineer he is. Voter beware! This from NPR, and you can check out romney's deceptive campaigning history at Mitt Romney's Role as Mormon Bishop Shows His Extremist Religious Beliefs 15SEP12 http://bucknacktssordidtawdryblog.blogspot.com/2012/09/mitt-romneys-role-as-mormon-bishop.html

Mitt Romney's comments on abortion have surprised those on both sides of the issue.
Evan Vucci/AP Mitt Romney's comments on abortion have surprised those on both sides of the issue.
Just how many abortion positions does Mitt Romney have? Once again, that answer is unclear.
This time the confusion began Tuesday, during a meeting with the editorial board of the Des Moines Register.
"There's no legislation with regards to abortion that I'm familiar with that would become part of my agenda," Romney said.
He went on to add that he would use an executive order to reinstate the "Mexico City Policy," which bars U.S. aid to international groups that lobby or pay for abortions.
But the comment about not pushing abortion-restricting legislation surprised those on both sides of the abortion debate.
"That's quite a shock, coming from Mitt Romney, who has consistently called for the overturn of Roe v Wade; who said that he would appoint Supreme Court justices who would do just that; who has an extensive pro-life agenda on his website that anybody can access," says Beth Shipp, political director of NARAL Pro-Choice America.
That agenda includes things like defunding Planned Parenthood, which would require legislation. Romney has also endorsed legislation to ban abortions at the point fetuses can theoretically feel pain.
In addition to a terse statement from the campaign vowing that, if elected, Romney would "be a pro-life president," the candidate himself tried to walk back some of his comments when asked by reporters at a campaign stop Wednesday.
"I think I've said time and again, I'm a pro-life candidate. I'll be a pro-life president," he said during a rope line in Ohio.
Even before Romney's walk back, however, he was being defended, if somewhat weakly, by abortion opponents.
"No one likes to be caught flat-footed or see your hero flat-footed. But those moments do come," said Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the Susan B. Anthony List.
Dannenfelser said she thinks Romney's comment to the editorial board was nothing more than a slip — that he just has too much else on his mind to keep issues like abortion front and center.
"I think the simple truth of the matter is his head is in jobs and the economy almost all day long, almost every single day," she said. "And of course we want at least a third of his focus to be on it all the time, but you don't always get everything that you want."
NARAL's Shipp, however, thinks it's anything but an accident — just as it was no accident when Romney said in a CBS evening news interview in August that he supported abortions when the pregnant woman's health — not just her life — was threatened. That position was also reversed later, quietly, by staff.
"I know Mitt Romney really wants women to vote for him," Shipp says. But the way that he's going about this, by lying to people about where he stands on the issues, is not going to serve him well come Nov. 6."
Still, political scientist John Green of the University of Akron says what Romney is doing isn't all that unusual.
"There's a long tradition of candidates adopting one kind of position for a broad audience, maybe on television, then having a different position in direct mail or in smaller venues," he says.
Green says Romney is running into trouble because in today's world of Twitter and nonstop cable news, there's no such thing as being able to deliver different messages to anyone anymore.
"We've discovered over the last couple of election cycles, and we've seen it in many examples this year, is that it's hard to keep those different venues separate because of our communication technology today," Green says.
With an issue as touchy as abortion, that can become even more hazardous, says Green.
"The people who really care about something like abortion, whether they're in the Republican base or the Democratic base, have very firm convictions on where a candidate should stand," he says. "And variation on those convictions can create very real problems."
Those problems include both alienating one's own voters, and mobilizing those on the other side.
At least for now, however, Romney seems to be making it work. There's still nearly a month until Election Day, however, and two more debates to go.

Todd Akin In 2008: Doctors Give Abortions To Women Who Aren't Pregnant & Todd Akin On Abortion: 'Legitimate Rape' Victims Have 'Ways To Try To Shut That Whole Thing Down' (VIDEO) 2OKT12&19AUG12

more surfaces about the weird science of women and their bodies from rep todd akin R MO. It is amazing he still has a chance of beating Sen Claire McCaskill D MO in her bid to remain one of Missouri's Senators. One has to wonder what kind of people can continue to support akin after he has made so many ignorant statements about women and their bodies. Certainly nobody with any sort of education, nobody who respects women, nobody who is concerned about the future of women in Missouri and the country and nobody who has any concern about the health of their mother, grandmothers, daughters, aunts, and their other female relatives, friends and coworkers. The support of rep akin by repiglican and tea-bagger politicians and so many of the voters in Missouri is disgusting to many of us around the country and it is a warning to all of us because the agenda of rep akin and his supporters is to return women to their subservient roll not of the 1950's but of the 1850's. Just like the extremist in the Islamic world, these extremist right wing social engineers want to impose sharia (in this case "christian" sharia) on women. Once that is accomplished they will start on every other part of American society they don't like. From HuffPost...

Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin sparked national outrage in August when he justified his opposition to abortion by claiming that victims of "legitimate rape" rarely get pregnant because "the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down." However, the Republican congressman's now-infamous remarks are not the first time he's made a scientifically questionable statement on abortion.
As Slate's Amanda Marcotte reported Tuesday, Akin gave a speech on the House floor in 2008 denouncing abortion providers as "terrorists," claiming that they sometimes perform abortions on women who "are not actually pregnant":
"It is no big surprise that we fight the terrorists because they are fundamentally un-American, and yet we have terrorists in our own culture called abortionists. One of the good pieces of news why we are winning this war is because there are not enough heartless doctors being graduated from medical schools. There is a real shortage of abortionists. Who wants to be at the very bottom of the food chain of medical profession? And what sort of places do these bottom-of-the-food-chain doctors work in? Places that are really a pit. You find that along with the culture of death go all kinds of other law-breaking: not following good sanitary procedure, giving abortions to women who are not actually pregnant, cheating on taxes, all these kinds of things, misuse of anesthetics so that people die or almost die."
Akin's allegation of doctors performing abortions on non-pregnant women is particularly puzzling, since, by definition, an abortion cannot be performed if there is no pregnancy to terminate.
Akin, a member of the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology, also gave a speech in 2005 on stem cell research, expressing his concern that a science-fiction story his daughter wrote about humans being harvested for body parts could become reality.
"Oppose public funding that destroys little yous and mes, and oppose this harvest of destruction," he urged his congressional colleagues considering a stem cell research bill.
Despite the overwhelming backlash to Akin's "legitimate rape" claim, the Republican has a good chance of beating incumbent Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) in next month's election. The latest polling shows Akin with a lead of one percentage point over McCaskill, and a number of Republicans, including Rick Santorum, Jim DeMint and Newt Gingrich, have come out in support of Akin in recent weeks.

Todd Akin On Abortion: 'Legitimate Rape' Victims Have 'Ways To Try To Shut That Whole Thing Down' (VIDEO) 19AUG12

Rep. Todd Akin (R-Mo.) justified his extreme opposition to abortion by claiming that victims of "legitimate rape" rarely get pregnant.
In an interview with KTVI-TV on Sunday, the GOP Senate nominee was asked if he supported abortion in the case of rape.
"From what I understand from doctors, that's really rare," said Akin said of pregnancy caused by rape. "If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down. But let's assume maybe that didn't work or something. I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be on the rapist."
Akin won a three-way primary on Aug. 7 for the rights to a November battle against incumbent Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.). McCaskill was "stunned" by Akin's Sunday comments.

Claire McCaskill
As a woman & former prosecutor who handled 100s of rape cases,I'm stunned by Rep Akin's comments about victims this AM
"It is beyond comprehension that someone can be so ignorant about the emotional and physical trauma brought on by rape," McCaskill added in a statement. "The ideas that Todd Akin has expressed about the serious crime of rape and the impact on its victims are offensive."
After Akin's primary win, McCaskill wasted little time in pouncing on his conservative record, calling the congressman "out of touch."
"We're going to prove to Missourians that Todd Akin is out of touch with their problems, out of touch with the pain that they feel, and out of touch with the views that they hold dear," she said back on Aug. 8.
Akin's comments on abortion and rape come less than two weeks after he suggested banning the morning-after pill.
“As far as I’m concerned, the morning-after pill is a form of abortion, and I think we just shouldn’t have abortion in this country,” he said in an Aug.8 interview with KCMO radio.
UPDATE (5:25 p.m. ET): Akin's campaign released a statement Sunday on the issue, where the congressman admitted that he "misspoke" in the KTVI interview.
"As a member of Congress, I believe that working to protect the most vulnerable in our society is one of my most important responsibilities, and that includes protecting both the unborn and victims of sexual assault. In reviewing my off-the-cuff remarks, it's clear that I misspoke in this interview and it does not reflect the deep empathy I hold for the thousands of women who are raped and abused every year. Those who perpetrate these crimes are the lowest of the low in our society and their victims will have no stronger advocate in the Senate to help ensure they have the justice they deserve. "I recognize that abortion, and particularly in the case of rape, is a very emotionally charged issue. But I believe deeply in the protection of all life and I do not believe that harming another innocent victim is the right course of action. I also recognize that there are those who, like my opponent, support abortion and I understand I may not have their support in this election.
"But I also believe that this election is about a wide range of very important issues, starting with the economy and the type of country we will be leaving our children and grandchildren. We've had 42 straight months of unacceptably high unemployment, trillion-dollar deficits, and Democratic leaders in Washington who are focused on growing government, instead of jobs. That is my primary focus in this campaign and while there are those who want to distract from that, knowing they cannot defend the Democrats' failed economic record of the last four years, that will continue to be my focus in the months ahead."
