Syrian Conflict Takes a Toll on Refugees -- and the Military 3AUG12

SYRIA is awash in the blood of it's own people and the international community allows the suffering to continue inside and outside the country. I am particularly disgusted that during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan the extremely wealthy oil producing Arab countries aren't doing enough to meet the needs of the refugees who have found shelter in Turkey, Jordan and Lebanon. With their riches they have the ability to provide housing, health care, continuing education and employment in the camps. Yet they are content to leave the plight of the Syrian people to face the brutality of bashar al-assad or to suffer from their mental and physical wounds in the refugee camps. So much for the true meaning of Ramadan and real Islamic charity. This from the PBS NewsHour...

While fighting rages between government and rebel forces in Syria, and the international community debates what to do about the conflict, Syrian refugees are just trying to survive and make their lives as normal as possible away from home.
Many refugees are less consumed by thoughts of regime change than of more immediate concerns of finding housing, paying rent and feeding their families, said Michael Shaikh, Syria country director at the Campaign for Innocent Victims in Conflict.
The privately funded nonprofit based in Washington, D.C., seeks to make warring parties more responsible to civilians, before, during and after conflict, and to limit the harm to them on the battlefield.
In Syria, because the warring parties -- the government under President Bashar al-Assad and a loosely knit opposition known as the Free Syrian Army -- are unresponsive, CIVIC must look to other means to protect civilians.
"We don't have any leverage with either of these warring parties right now, but there are still a variety of civilian protection issues that the Lebanese, Jordanian or Turkish governments can impact, Washington can impact though pressuring its allies, the Group of Friends of Syria with money, and political advocacy can do in terms of pressuring Damascus for access to the International Committee of the Red Cross," said Shaikh. "We're trying to expand the space for others that can impact civilian lives in a positive way."
Toward that goal of influencing those who can make a difference, Shaikh spent seven weeks in June and July interviewing Syrians, armed opposition, demonstrators, aid agencies, and government officials in Jordon, Turkey and Lebanon about the needs of Syrians and how they could be addressed.

The needs, he found, were great. Not only were refugees trying to adjust to life in another country and meet the daily needs of their families, they often were suffering from the trauma of escaping shelling in their hometowns. "If you've ever lived through that, it's an incredibly profound and frightening thing," said Shaikh (pictured above). "Particularly the people in Homs who experienced this for nearly a month, it really can break someone mentally, and these people needed psychological attention."
Are they getting it? In some cases yes, but in most cases no, he said. "Some international aid agencies in Lebanon and now Jordan are stepping up to answer those needs, but there's still a huge gap in what is needed and what it provided."
The United Nations has asked for about $200 million to meet Syrians' basic needs, but only about one-quarter has been funded by the international community, said Shaikh.
The State Department on Thursday released a breakdown of the $76 million the United States is spending to help Syrians inside and outside the country.
Reporters and aid agencies are having difficulty gaining permission to enter Syria, but information coming from refugees paints a stark picture of what is happening inside the country.
It appears hospitals and medical staff are targets of the regime, said Shaikh. Hospitals are being destroyed or occupied for military purposes, and those with injuries are denied treatment, he said. "We got the general impression that anyone who had a war wound in Syria was perceived by the government as being loyal to the opposition and thus were being denied medical attention."
He said some doctors and medical staff he interviewed described threats to their lives or colleagues they knew who were killed or arrested because the government perceived them as supporting the opposition.
Shaikh said he has briefed State Department, U.N. agencies and other officials with his findings.

Refugees also are suffering from idleness, whether they are confined to camps or simply can't find jobs. "People just want to work, and the vast majority of these people just have nothing to do," he added. "It doesn't do much for the body and soul. They want to work, even if it's menial labor. It's giving people a purpose even just for a few days or weeks."
The conflict is taking a toll on the members of the Syrian army, too, said Shaikh. Military defectors told him some Syrian soldiers would break the chain of command and refuse to fire a weapon when told to, purposefully sabotage weapons, or slow down operations to give civilians time to move. "They didn't want to fire on their own people."
When their superiors found out, they were either executed on the spot or arrested and tortured, the defectors told him. He said he also heard that high-ranking Syrian military members would tell soldiers if you're going to defect, make sure you take your family with you or they'll be in trouble, which would work as a deterrent.
"That's not to excuse the brutal actions of the Syrian military, but it highlights some of the real human and complex decisions that people are making to try to protect civilians, in a way."
In some cases, he said, members of the military would defect -- sometimes because they were ordered to go to battle in their hometowns -- and they would return to fight as opposition in their neighborhood. "It's really local in that sense," he added.
Shaikh, who was born in Ohio of Pakistani parents, said even though he's researched troubled nations for a decade, the situation in Syria was different. "I was kind of worried I was getting numb to this stuff because I was doing it so long, but for some reason Syria knocked something loose," he said.
"It's not the numbers of people who are dying in this war. Don't get me wrong, it's shocking. If the numbers are right, 20,000 is pretty shocking on so many different levels. But in Syria it's the way people are dying -- the disproportionate shelling, the targeting of medical staff, the denial of medical care, it's the sniper fire that we've heard so much of -- random in its targets but exact in its execution. War is always dreadful, but for some reason this seems particularly dreadful to me."

Ramadan: For Muslims a Month of Fasting and Giving from CHARITY NAVIGATOR AUG 2011

AN update from Charity Navigator on worthy, reliable charities for Muslims to consider during Ramadan, click the header to go to the site for more information.
Ramadan: For Muslims a Month of Fasting and Giving
The ninth month of the Islamic calendar is Ramadan. This is a holy time when over one billion Muslims around the world fast and focus their attention on giving to charity, know as Zakat. According to the lunar calendar followed by Muslims, Ramadan in 2011 starts on or around August 1 and will finish on or around August 29.
During Ramadan, both fasting and acts of charity are obligatory upon Muslims who are able to do so. Fasting from sunrise to sunset is representative of a spiritual cleansing, an effort to become closer to God, and an attempt to gain a better understanding of human suffering. The act of fasting calls for Muslims to practice self-discipline and sacrifice, as well as reflect upon and show compassion for the poor and less fortunate. Muslims are reminded to be generous and increase their charitable activities. As a result, during Ramadan, much charitable giving is done by the community. Donations are usually focused on giving to those stricken by poverty and hunger. In celebration of Ramadan, consider donating to one of these highly rated charities which either work predominantly in countries with large Muslim populations or strive towards the alleviation of hunger.
At the end of Ramadan, Muslims observe a celebration called Eid al-Fitr (the Festival of Fast-Breaking). During Eid al-Fitr, Muslims enjoy time with their families and often exchange gifts. Instead of the usual gift exchange, Muslims may want to further their Ramadan inspired philanthropic activities by giving a Good Card, a gift card for charity where the recipients get to donate to their charity of choice.

new 44 Cent Forever Stamp, MUSLIMS, OBAMA, AND CHRISTMAS 14JAN11

NOT a full week after the Tucson, AZ shootings I received a e mail (forwarded from  friends), venomous in it's text against Pres Obama and Muslims, all over the EID stamps sold by the USPS and a purportedly new stamp that isn't even an USPS stamp at all. It saddens me that my friends, who are good people, who love God and country (he is a vet), who I have always considered my second parents, can be manipulated and enraged by an e mail that is full of deception, lies and propaganda. The purpose of this e mail is to incite fear, and the anger, rage, hate and prejudice that goes with it. So here is my answer to them, and I hope they pass it on to all they sent the original e mail to as well as to whoever sent it to them. And I wish them peace.
Hi there,
Here is the real story on these stamps, first offered for sale in 2001 when Pres Bush was in office, here is what he had on the White House website, the link to check it out yourself is
http://web.archive.org/web/20071215160912/http://www.whitehouse.gov/infocus/ramadan/eidstamp.html
Also included the Snopes article on this e mail making the rounds. Finally, the stamp with butterflies and hearts and Arabic script isn't even an USPS stamp, it is a custom stamp sold by a company called Zazzle, note the line through the 44 showing it can not be used for postage. Just thought you should know.
Love & Peace,
Craig
Just an update, here is the response I got from my friends that sent me this e mail (the reference to the stripper is about the After 50 Stripper video I sent them, also posted on this blog).
Thank you ole pal, I knew you if anybody could find out  about the stamp. There is so much junk going on you don,t know what is true and what is bull. Have a great day and thanks for the stripper. it was great. Parksie
In Focus
About the Stamp Image of Stamp The Eid stamp, designed by Zakariya of Arlington, Va., features the Arabic phrase "Eid mubarak" in gold calligraphy on a blue background. English text on the stamps reads "EID GREETINGS."
Employing traditional methods and instruments to create this design, Zakariya chose a script known in Arabic as "thuluth" and in Turkish as "sulus." He describes it as "the choice script for a complex composition due to its open proportions and sense of balance." He used homemade black ink, and his pens were crafted from seasoned reeds from the Near East and Japanese bamboo from Hawaii. The paper was specially prepared with a coating of starch and three coats of alum and egg-white varnish, then burnished with an agate stone and aged for more than a year.
Zakariya's black-and-white design was then colorized by computer. The colors chosen for the stamp Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic month of fasting, prayer and reflection. Ramadan remembers the month in A.D. 610 when Muslims believe that the prophet Muhammad received the revelations from God that would form Islam's holy book, the Quran.

Variations:   The following image has been circulated as a picture of the USPS Eid stamp (or as an "Arabic Valentine's Day stamp"), but it does not depict the Eid stamp, nor is it a USPS issue; it is a custom stamp ordered through the Zazzle web site:

Origins:   The stamp described in the Examples section above exists, although it is not new, it is not a "Christmas stamp," and it has nothing to do with Barack Obama: The EID stamp is a nine-year-old USPS Holiday Series stamp commemorating two Islamic holidays that have no connection to Christmas.

The EID postage stamp was introduced by the United States Postal Service (at the then-current 34-cent rate) as part of its Holiday Celebrations Series on 1 September 2001, just ten days before the September 11 terrorist attacks on New York and Washington. The EID stamp has since been reissued at updated first-class postage rates in 2002, 2006, 2007, 2008, and most recently in September 2009.

As the USPS describes the EID stamp:
The Eid stamp commemorates the two most important festivals — or eids — in the Islamic calendar: Eid Al-Fitr and Eid Al-Adha. On these days, Muslims wish each other "Eid mubarak," the phrase featured in Islamic calligraphy on the stamp. "Eid mubarak" translates literally as "blessed festival," and can be paraphrased as "May your religious holiday be blessed." This phrase can be applied to both Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.
The word "eid" is roughly equivalent to the English word "celebration" or "festival." The three-day Eid Al-Fitr celebrates the end of the month-long fasting of Ramadan; the three-day EID stamp Eid Al-Adha commemorates the willingness of the Prophet Abraham to sacrifice his son Ishmael in response to God's command*, and it marks the end of Hajj, the annual Muslim pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca. (In 2010, Eid Al-Fitr begins at sundown on September 8, and Eid Al-Adha commences at sundown on November 15.)

The EID commemorative is often mischaracterized as a "Christmas stamp," but it has nothing to do with Christmas other than that it is part of a series of U.S. postage stamps commemorating several diverse celebrations, some of which generally occur around the November-December "holiday season" timeframe (Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Thanksgiving), some of which occur at other times of year (Cinco de Mayo), and some of which move around from year to year on the Gregorian calendar (Eid Al-Fitr and Eid Al-Adha). The statement "[Muslims] don't even believe in Christ and they're getting their own Christmas stamp!" is therefore nonsensical, akin to protesting Hanukkah stamps because "Jews don't even believe in Christ but they have their own Christmas stamp!" (Athough Muslims do not believe that Jesus was the son of God, Islam does regard him as a prophet, a mortal who was divinely chosen to spread God's message.)

An August 2009 version of the "Muslim stamp" e-mail added the claim that "President Obama has directed the United States Postal Service to REMEMBER and HONOR the EID MUSLIM holiday season with a new commemorative 42 Cent First Class Holiday Postage Stamp." This statement is manifestly

false: As noted above, the EID stamp was introduced in 2001, eight years before Barack Obama became President of the United States.

The issue of "boycotting" a stamp that commemorates Islamic holidays is largely moot, since EID stamps are generally a specialty item sold only to postal customers who specifically request them. Moreover, the EID stamp is an ordinary first-class postage stamp; all proceeds from its sale go to the USPS, not to any Muslim-related groups or organizations.

The EID stamp is also not the first or only governmental or commercial recognition of these Islamic holidays in the U.S. The American greeting card manufacturer Hallmark produces a variety of holiday cards celebrating Eid al-Fitr, and the President of the United States, George W. Bush, extended official greetings, issued messages, participated in commemorations of both Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha (even after the September 11 attacks), and promoted the EID stamp via the White House web site.

(*This is the reverse of Judeo-Christian tradition, which holds that Abraham was commanded by God to sacrifice not Ishmael but his other son, Isaac.)

DROP DEATH SENTENCES FOR MEN CONVICTED OF “SORCERY” IN SAUDI ARABIA from AI AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL 8SEP10

PLEASE participate in this AI action to save these men facing death sentences in Saudi Arabia. Click the header or the link at the bottom to participate.

Amnesty International is calling on the Saudi Arabian King to take the opportunity of the end of Ramadan to commute the death sentences against two foreign natonals convicted of “sorcery”.

The King often issues pardons for prisoners during and just after Ramadan, the Islamic month of fasting that is this year expected to end on 9 September. A moratorium on executions is observed throughout the month as well.

Amnesty International is also urging that ‘Ali Hussain Sibat, a Lebanese national, and ‘Abdul Hamid al-Fakki, a Sudanese national, be released immediately and unconditionally if they have been convicted solely for acts amounting to the peaceful exercise of their rights to freedom of expression and freedom of religion.

‘Ali Hussain Sibat, who is 46 and has five children, was a presenter on a show on the Lebanese satellite TV station Sheherazade in which he gave advice and predictions about the future. He was arrested by the Committee for the Propagation of Virtue and Prevention of Vice (CPVPV), also known as the Mutawa’een (religious police), on charges of “sorcery” in May 2008 while he was in Saudi Arabia to perform a form of Muslim pilgrimage, the umra.

‘Ali Hussain Sibat was sentenced to death by a court in Madina on 9 November 2009 after secret court hearings where he had no legal representation or assistance.

In January, the Court of Appeal in Makkah upheld an appeal against his death sentence on the grounds that it was a premature verdict. The Court of Appeal said that all allegations made against ‘Ali Hussain Sibat had to be verified and that if he had really committed the crime he should be asked to repent.
He was tried again before the original court in Madina, which, on 10 March, upheld the death sentence . The judges in a statement said that he deserved to receive the death penalty because he had practised “sorcery” publicly for several years before millions of viewers and that his actions made him an infidel. The case is now again before the Court of Appeal in Makkah for a further review.

‘Abdul Hamid bin Hussain bin Moustafa al-Fakki, who is aged about 36, was arrested on 8 December 2005 in Madina by members of the Mutawa’een.
He was accused of practising sorcery, after a man working for the CPVPV entrapped him by asking him to produce a spell that would lead to the man’s father leaving his second wife. ‘Abdul Hamid al-Fakki apparently said he would do this in exchange for 6,000 Saudi Arabian riyals (approximately US$1,600). Following his arrest, he was questioned and apparently beaten and is believed to have confessed to carrying out acts of “sorcery”.
‘Abdul Hamid al-Fakki was sentenced to death for “sorcery” by the General Court in Madina on 27 March 2007 for sorcery. He had no legal assistance and very little is known about his trial proceedings as they were held in secret. He is still held in Madina Prison.
