What to Watch For

For the GOP, nearly 600 delegates are up for grabs on Super Tuesday — the most for any day of the 2016 primary season. The bulk of them come from seven Southern contests, including the day’s biggest prize: Texas. Some party strategists warn that if Donald Trump sweeps the South, it may be too late for Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz and the other candidates to stop him. Super Tuesday is Hillary Clinton’s chance for an armload of victories that would give her full claim to front-runner status in the Democratic primary race. But Bernie Sanders could spoil it with big wins somewhere outside his native Northeast. Clinton is trying to assume a sheen of inevitability as her party’s presumptive nominee and hoping Texas, with 222 delegates at stake, helps her get there.
