Senate GOP expresses frustration, anger, sadness as Trump snubs Cornyn in Texas

by Alexander Bolton - 05/20/26 6:00 AM ET

President Trump’s decision Tuesday to snub Sen. John Cornyn and endorse state Attorney General Ken Paxton in the Texas Senate Republican primary was met with frustration, anger and even sadness by Senate Republicans.

The move likely sinks Cornyn’s hopes of winning another Senate term, and Republicans warned it could make it tougher to defeat Democratic candidate James Talarico in November.

Republican senators exuded pain for Cornyn, who served as Senate Republican whip during Trump’s first term and is deeply respected by his Senate GOP colleagues

“I’m really sad, I’m sad personally for John Cornyn and I hope he’s successful in his election regardless, and I’m sad for the institution,” said one GOP senator who requested anonymity to talk about the internal conference feelings.

“There’s no senator that works harder to make things happen around here, works harder to take care of his colleagues,” the GOP lawmaker lamented.

The senator noted that the tradition in the past has been for the president and the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) to work together to help Republican incumbents facing primary challengers.

“I think it’s sad for the institution. There’s something to this that’s really troubling,” the lawmaker added.

Trump’s decision to back Paxton over Cornyn came amid growing tensions with Senate Republicans over other issues.

Two of the biggest brewing fights are over funding for the White House ballroom and a $1.8 billion legal compensation fund for MAGA allies who claim they were targeted by the government.

Republican senators say the proposal to provide up to $1 billion in a budget reconciliation package to help build the White House ballroom, a top Trump priority, now appears to be dead.

A GOP senator familiar with internal discussions said funding will be provided to the Secret Service to improve security at the White House but warned that a Saturday ruling by the parliamentarian makes it all but impossible to fund the construction of the ballroom itself.

Several GOP senators also say they will vote against the ballroom funding, raising serious questions about whether it has enough political support to pass the Senate even if it passes muster with the Senate parliamentarian.

Some Republican senators saw Trump’s treatment of Cornyn as a snub of Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.), who had worked behind the scenes for months to persuade the president to back him.

The NRSC invested in Cornyn through a joint fundraising committee, and One Nation, a fundraising group affiliated with Thune’s political operation, has spent more than $10 million helping Cornyn.

Thune appeared stone-faced when he walked into the Senate Republican lunch Tuesday afternoon, shortly after Trump announced his support of Paxton. Asked about Trump’s social media post on the subject, Thune answered somberly: “It’s his decision.”

The Senate GOP leader later told reporters at a press conference that he still sees Cornyn as giving Republicans the best chance of defending the Texas Senate seat in November.

“Sen. Cornyn is a principled conservative. He is a very effective senator for the state of Texas. But I don’t, none of us, control what the president does,” Thune said. “That doesn’t change the way I feel. And I am certainly supportive — I will continue to be supportive of Sen. Cornyn and his reelection.”

Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) said she couldn’t understand Trump’s thinking, given that Paxton was charged with felony securities fraud and faced a lengthy prison sentence that he managed to avoid by reaching a deal with prosecutors to pay nearly $300,000 in restitution and complete 100 hours of community service.

“I don’t understand. He is an ethically challenged individual,” Collins said of Trump’s support of Paxton, who was charged of defrauding investors in a Dallas-area tech startup. The charges were later dropped after he agreed to a pretrial diversion program.

“John Cornyn is an outstanding senator and deserved in my judgment the president’s support. Obviously, it’s the president’s call, but I’m disappointed that he did it,” Collins said.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) said she was “supremely disappointed” in Trump’s endorsement of Paxton over Cornyn.

“I don’t understand it,” she said when asked about Trump’s motivation.

She said the endorsement will probably make it tougher for Republicans to keep the Texas seat from flipping in November.

“Based on the numbers that I’ve seen, yeah,” she said. “How does that help strengthen the president’s hand when we lose a state like Texas?”

Sen. Mike Rounds (R-S.D.) acknowledged that if Paxton wins the Texas Republican primary runoff on Tuesday, Republicans might be required to spend more money to defend the Texas seat in the fall.

“I suspect that there’s a belief that that’s a possibility,” he said. “Our focus was on John Cornyn and what a job he’s done for the people of Texas.”

Sen. James Lankford (R-Okla.), the vice chair of the Senate Republican Conference, said Trump “can endorse who he wants” but declared “I’m a big John Cornyn fan.”

Trump called Cornyn “a good man” in his Truth Social post endorsing Paxton but said the Texas senator “was not supportive of me when times were tough,” likely referring to Cornyn’s statement in 2023 that Trump’s time had “passed him by.”

GOP senators are still coping with their colleague Sen. Bill Cassidy’s lopsided loss in Saturday’s Louisiana Senate Republican primary.

Trump played a major role in Cassidy’s ouster from Congress by endorsing his primary opponent, Rep. Julia Letlow (R-La.), and urging his supporters on social media to vote against Cassidy, calling him “a sleazebag, a terrible guy, who is bad for Louisiana.”

Trump’s endorsement of Paxton and his attacks against Cassidy won’t make it any easier for him to muster GOP votes for his ballroom funding or for the $1.8 billion anti-weaponization fund to compensate MAGA allies who believe they were targeted by the government.

“I don’t expect to be voting for the ballroom funding,” Cassidy told reporters Tuesday.

He also criticized the administration’s decision to set up what he called a “slush fund” to compensate political allies, possibly including Trump supporters who were convicted of storming the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, in an attempt to block the certification of the 2020 presidential election.

“People are concerned about making their own ends meet, not about putting a slush fund together without a legal precedent. We’re a nation of laws,” he said when asked about the so-called anti-weaponization fund.

Texas AG is caught in shocking sex scandal as details of secret affair with married Christian influencer mom-of-seven are exposed

, updated By MARYANN MARTINEZ, US TEXAS BUREAU CHIEF
Texas's controversial Attorney General has been caught in a shocking sex scandal - less than two years after cheating on his wife with his mistress.
The Daily Mail can exclusively reveal Ken Paxton, 62, was secretly seeing a married Christian influencer behind the backs of both their partners.
Multiple sources confirm mother-of-seven Tracy Duhon, 57, who is also an author, is the reason the politician's relationship crumbled earlier this summer.
Texas State Senator Angela Paxton announced in July their 38-year marriage was over in a stinging tweet, citing 'biblical grounds'.
It is not the first time Ken Paxton has been rocked by scandal, having been caught cheating on Angela in 2023 with his former mistress Laura Olsen.
He was impeached by the state house, accused of misusing his office and taking bribes while trying to get a job for his lover, allegations he denied all along and was acquitted of in the state senate.
His wife stood by him through that first scandal.
But the latest incident with Duhon appears to have been the last straw, and could threaten Paxton's latest bid to become a US senator.
The romance between Duhon and Paxton started after the pair met at the Kentucky Derby last year, multiple sources revealed.
Since May 2024, the lovers have had multiple rendezvous on trips across the country and even overseas, according to insiders.
The getaways were essential to keeping the entanglement secret as both were married at the time, the sources said.
On social media, Duhon bragged about her 27-year marriage to Troy Duhon, the wealthy owner of 39 car dealerships.
A New Orleans native, Duhon keeps a very active social media presence, discussing the power of prayer, and advising others on how to navigate death and other difficult times of their lives.
On her website, Duhon shares she lost two babies who died the day they were born in separate pregnancies.
Her faith and grief counseling are the subject of her book When Hope is all you Have.
'[Paxton is] enamored with her face. He's enamored with her story of overcoming adversity - she's lost two children. He's enamored with her faith,' one source explained.
The source claims Paxton has a 'sincere' affection for her and believes she could be the second major relationship in his life.
Despite their best efforts to keep their relationship under wraps, Paxton's wife learned her husband was cheating again earlier this year, another source said.
Even though the Paxtons had not lived together since the summer of 2024, learning about Duhon made the arrangement between Angela and Paxton untenable, sources explained.
The Duhons finalized their divorce three weeks ago, a source confirmed to the Daily Mail, adding that Tracy met Paxton at the Kentucky Derby in May 2024.
They stayed under the same roof at the home of a mutual friend who hosted them for the event.
In July, two months after the Derby, Tracy filed for divorce, the informant stated.
In an epic tweet, Texas State Senator Angela announced the end of her 38-year marriage in July, dumping her husband, who has renewed political aspirations.
'Today, after 38 years of marriage, I filed for divorce on biblical grounds,' she announced to the world on X July 10.
'...in light of recent discoveries, I do not believe that it honors God or is loving to myself, my children, or Ken to remain in the marriage.'
A public official in her own right, Angela, represents the Dallas suburb of McKinney in the Texas Senate.
She accused Ken of 'adultery' in court filings according to KUT News, however their divorce records have now been sealed.

Ken Paxton, a staunch ally of Donald Trump, has hitched his wagon to the MAGA movement, becoming one of the fiercest defenders of the President.
Last year, he decided to try and unseat long-time Senator John Cornyn, considered a more establishment Republican.
Now both office holders are desperately trying to convince conservative voters they are the purest incarnation of the GOP.
Both Paxton and Cornyn are appealing to conservatives who rank Christianity and family values as top priorities.
Prior to news of the Paxton divorce, the MAGA Attorney General was ahead by as many as 16 points with conservative voters in the Lone Star State.
Polling in the weeks after Angela announced the affair shows Cornyn and Paxton in a dead heat
Cornyn certainly believes the Duhon affair is a game changer, repeatedly attacking Paxton on the issue.
The sitting senator could not resist the opportunity to stick it to Paxton as news of a tech CEO who was caught cheating on his wife at a Coldplay concert went viral.
'Good news for @kenpaxtontx,' Cornyn posted to X, sharing a parody tweet joking the band would no longer be showing candid camera shots of their audience.
Cornyn also launched a new attack ad in July, calling out Paxton for his affair with Laura Olson - whose identity was first revealed by Texas Bureau Chief MaryAnn Martinez.
Olson became the focus when the attorney general was impeached by both Republicans and Democrats in the Texas House on allegations of corruption.
Lone Star members of the House alleged that Paxton used his position as the top law enforcer in the state to get bribes and donations.
One top donor, Nate Paul, was singled out as paying for access to the attorney general's office.
Earlier this year, Paul pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of making false statements to a financial institution in exchange for other federal charges being dropped. He was fined $1million and sentenced to five years' supervised release.
When Paxton's affair with Olson became known, Paxton asked Paul to hire her at one of his Austin companies, lawmakers accused the attorney general.
The allegation of the quid pro quo is what resulted in Paxton's historic impeachment, with bi-partisan votes.
During the vote in the House, which was broadcasted live on TV, Paxton allegedly texted members of the House to threaten them if they voted to impeach him.
'I would like to point out that several members of this House, while on the floor of this House doing the state's business, received telephone calls from General Paxton personally, threatening them with political consequences in our next election,' Rep. Charlie Geren said during the proceedings.
Paxton was eventually acquitted after a trial in the state senate and returned to his office. If he had been found guilty, he would have lost his job as attorney general.
Angela sat through his trial at the senate every day, listening to details of his affair with Olson, even on the days her husband did not show up. She recused herself from voting.
Olson was called to the State Capitol to testify, but never actually took the stand.
When asked about Duhon being his mistress, Paxton did not address the claim but attacked the Daily Mail and vowed to take on the 'deranged radical Left' with Trump.
When the Daily Mail reached out to Duhon, she hung up after learning she was on the phone with a reporter.
She did not respond to text messages seeking further comment. Angela Paxton declined to comment through a spokesman.
