As MAGA spins out of control with dozens of feuds and petty infighting, one of the biggest threads of discontent—the Trump administration's handling of the Epstein files—has plunged into new levels of chaos.
That's because, as my colleague Clint Hendler writes, heavy redactions, and in some cases near-total redactions, wallpaper the latest cache of files. This is not what was supposed to happen. Congress had mandated that the Trump-controlled Justice Department release all government files related to the late pedophile. Instead, only a portion was made publicly available, again, with extensive redactions throughout.
I have no idea to what extent Donald Trump may be in these files. But has anyone acted more suspiciously? As Jess Michaels, one of Epstein's victims, put it to the New York Times: “What are they protecting? The cover-up continues."
But going back to the MAGA crackup, the redactions have set off a new storm among the Trumpian devout. Now, how will any of this translate beyond dumb infighting? Will it affect how MAGA votes? It's too soon to tell. But we at Mother Jones will surely keep you posted.
