"Frankenfish"—otherwise known as genetically modified Atlantic salmon—are grown in land-based tanks but could escape and breed with the rare, few wild salmon still out there. Earthjustice, along with 11 other major national environmental groups, has written the Food and Drug Administration, asking for a full environmental impact statement before approving the unnatural fish. As he heads out the door, departing New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson has asked President Obama to designate Otero Mesa, a rare grassland in Southern New Mexico, as a national monument. Rules forcing the oil and gas industry to disclose how much greenhouse gas they emit were announced this month by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
