Fall Back or Spring Forward

Friends and colleagues,

The first obligation of any government is to keep its citizens safe and free.

Since the founding of the Republic, the arc of our history has been to provide greater safety for our citizens while continuing to secure and expand the civil rights of all citizens.  These fundamental principles are both American and Progressive and lie at the heart of our values as Democrats.

GOP's Legislative Throwback...

Unfortunately, some members of the Republican Party appear to be intent on racing back to the 1950s at an accelerating pace.  Consider some events just within the past two weeks.

Even with the recent horrific events at Newtown fresh in our minds, Senate Republicans demonstrated a stunning lack of political courage when they failed to support any legislation proposed to reduce gun violence.

...Is Grasping for the Past

On the social front, the GOP reaffirmed its opposition to marriage equality for all citizens.  Not to be outdone, in the Commonwealth the assault on women’s rights continues, with the latest installment being the misuse of hospital construction codes in an attempt to close women’s health care clinics in Virginia.

...And Rushing for the Dark Ages

Moreover, we had the spectacle of our own Attorney General petitioning the courts to reinstate Virginia’s 18th Century sodomy laws, which had previously been ruled unconstitutional.  Perhaps Republicans should abandon the elephant as their mascot and adopt a dinosaur in its place.

I Want to Fight for Our Future

My friends, progress is never a permanent condition, and unless we are prepared to fight for progress, we will not even keep the gains that we have made.  In the aftermath of the successful 2008 Presidential elections, we relaxed and we lost ground in many elections.  We cannot afford to repeat that experience.

Let’s get out the vote this year to support Democratic candidates at all levels. Other campaigns focus on endorsements — we focus on issues and  the only endorsement we seek is the endorsement of the voters.  I’m running to make a difference and I invite you to work with me to do the same.

Let’s get the job done.
